A Teaser from FAIREST

 

SHE WAS LYING ON A BURNING PYRE, HOT COALS BENEATH 
her back. White sparks floated in her vision but the mercy of 
unconsciousness wouldn’t come. Her throat was hoarse from screaming. 
The smell of her own burning flesh invaded her nostrils. Smoke stung her 
eyes. Blisters burbled across her skin, and entire swaths of flesh peeled 
away, revealing raw tissue underneath.
 The pain was relentless, the agony never ending. She pleaded 
for death, but it never came. 
She reached out with her good hand, trying to drag her body from 
the fire, but the bed of coals crushed and col- lapsed under her weight, 
burying her, dragging her deeper into the embers and the smoke. 
Through the  haze  she  caught  a  glimpse  of  kind  eyes. A warm 
smile. A finger curled toward her. Come here, baby sister . . .
 
Levana gasped and jolted upward, limbs tangled in heavy  
blankets. Her sheets were damp and cold from her sweat, but her 
skin was still burning hot from the dream.
Her throat felt scratched raw. She struggled to swallow, but her saliva 
tasted like smoke and made her cringe. She sat in the faint morning 
light shuddering, trying to will away the nightmare. The same 
nightmare that had plagued her for too many years, that she could 
never seem to escape.
 
She rubbed her hands repeatedly over her arms and sides 
until she was certain the fire wasn’t real. She was not burning alive. 
She was safe and alone in her chambers. 
With a trembling breath, she scooted to the other side of the mattress, 
away from the sweat-stained sheets, and lay back down. Afraid to close 
her eyes, she stared up at the can- opy and practiced her slow breathing 
until her heartbeat steadied.
 
She tried to distract herself by planning who she would be that day. 
A thousand possibilities floated before her. She would be 
beautiful, but there were many types of beauty. Skin tone, hair texture, 
the shape of one’s eyes, the length of a neck, a well-placed freckle, a 
certain grace in the way one walked.
 
Levana knew a great deal about beauty, just as she knew a great 
deal about ugliness.

Then she remembered that today was the funeral. 
She groaned at the thought. How exhausting it would be to hold a  
glamour all day long, in front of so many. She didn’t  
want to go, but she would have no choice.
 
It was an inconvenient day for her focus to be shaken by nightmares.  
Perhaps it would be best to choose something familiar.  
As the dream receded into her subconscious, Levana toyed  
with the idea of being her mother that day. Not as Queen Jannali 
had been when she died, but perhaps as a fifteen-year-old version of  
her. It would be a sort of homage to attend the funeral wearing her  
mother’s  cheekbones and the vivid violet eyes that everyone knew  
were glamour- made, though no one would have dared say so aloud.
 
She spent a few minutes imagining what her mother might  
have looked like at her age, and she let the glamour settle over her.  
Moon-blonde hair sleekly pulled into a low knot. Skin as pale as a  
sheet of ice. A little shorter than she would become full grown. Pale  
pink lips, so as not to detract from the vibrancy of those eyes.
 
It calmed her, sinking into the glamour. But no sooner had she  
tested the look than she felt the wrongness of it.  
She did not want to go to her parents’ funeral in the garb of a girl-  
now-dead.

A tap fluttered at the door, interrupting her thoughts.  
Levana sighed, and quickly fell into another costume that she’d  
dreamed up days before. Olive skin, a graceful  
slope to her nose, and raven-black hair cut adorably short. She shifted  
through a few eye colors before landing on a striking gray-blue,  
topped off with smoldering black lashes.
 
Before she could second-guess herself, she embedded a silver  
jewel into the flesh beneath her right eye.  
A teardrop. To prove that she was in mourning.  
“Come in,” she called, opening her eyes.  
A servant entered carrying a breakfast tray. The girl curtsied  
in the doorway, not lifting her gaze from the floor— which rendered  
Levana’s glamour unnecessary—before approaching the bed.
 
“Good morning, Your Highness.”  
Sitting up, Levana allowed the servant to set the tray across her  
lap and tuck a cloth napkin around her. The ser- vant poured jasmine tea  
into a hand-painted porcelain cup that had been imported from Earth  
several generations ago, and garnished it with two small mint leaves and a 
drizzle of honey. Levana said nothing as the servant uncovered a tray of  
tiny cream-filled pastries, so that Levana could see what they looked like  
whole, before using a silver knife to saw them into even tinier bite-  
size pieces. While the servant worked, Levana eyed the dish of  
bright-colored fruits: a

soft-fuzzed peach set into a halo of black and red berries, all dusted with  
powdered sugar.  
“Is there anything else I can bring for you, Your High-  
ness?”  
“No, that will be all. But send the other one up in twenty minutes to  
prepare my mourning dress.”  
“Of course, Your Highness,” she answered, although they both knew  
there was no other one. Every servant in the pal- ace was the other one.  
It didn’t matter to Levana who the girl sent up, so long as whoever it  
was could properly stitch her into the sleek gray gown the seamstress  
had delivered the day before. Levana didn’t want to bother with  
glamouring her dress today in addition to her face, not with so  
many other thoughts in her head.
 
With another curtsy, the servant ducked out of the room, leaving  
Levana to stare down at her breakfast tray. Only now did she realize  
how very un-hungry she was. There was an ache in her stomach, perhaps  
left over from the hor- rible dream. Or she supposed it could have been  
sadness, but that was doubtful.
 
She felt no great loss at the death of her parents, who had been  
gone now for half the long day. Eight artificial nights. Their deaths  
were terribly gory. They were assassi- nated by a shell who used his  
invincibility against the Lunar gift to sneak into the palace. The man  
had shot two royal

guards in the head before making his way to her parents’ bedroom on  
the third floor, killing three more guards, and slitting her mother’s throat  
so deeply the knife severed part of her spine. He had then gone down the  
hallway to where her father was lying with one of his mistresses and  
stabbed him sixteen times in the chest.
 
The mistress was still screaming, blood spurts across her face,  
when two royal guards found them.  
The shell murderer was still stabbing.  
Levana had not seen the bodies, but she had seen the bedrooms  
the next morning, and her first thought was that all that blood  
would make for a very pretty rouge on her lips.

This blog is written by my eleven year old, Aidan Wesley. He’s always had a love of reading insomuch that he would prefer sitting on a couch reading to running around outside. He’s read several chapter books given to him from his AWESOME auntie, Colleen! Right now he’s reading the Bunnicula series and he almost finished with book #7, Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allen Crow.

First, may I introduce Aidan Wesley. . .

” Hi. I am in sixth grade and I like games. For example, FNAF (Five Nights at Freddies), Plants vs. Zombies, Minecraft, and Luigi’s Mansion. I also like building paper crafts and Legos, playing with my brother Lex and baby sister Ashley, and creating animation with my Nintendo 3DS using play dough and action figures. My favorite subjects are science and art. My least favorite is of course math! I have so many favorite treats I can’t list them all. My favorite books I’ve read include; Diary of a Wimpy Kid novels, the How to Train Your Dragon series, Big Nate books and The Quest for the Diamond Sword (Minecraft novel). When I grow up I’d like to be either an engineer or a scientist. Aunt Colleen is special because she loves me so good.”

Book review on Bunnicula, A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery
by Deborah and James Howe

 

Setting:

This story takes place in a house owned by the Monroe family in Centerville.

 

Main Characters:

The story is told from the perspective of the family pet dog, Harold. He is a dog that isn’t really into adventure. He is peaceful almost all of the time. Chester is a boy cat who is deathly afraid of the vacuum cleaner. He likes to take read and take lots of naps. Harold and Chester get along and are quite good friends. Bunnicula is not your average bunny rabbit. Infact, Chester believes that Bunnicula is a vampire bunny because it doesn’t eat vegetables like a normal bunny. Indeed, it sucks the juice from the vegetables.

 Personal Review:

I liked this book because it was full of fun, adventure, and made me laugh a lot. My rating for this book would be 5/5 stars. This series is one of my favorites! One of my favorite parts of this book is when the family wakes up and finds lots of white vegetables in the kitchen.

Gel Nail Polish Rules All Polish

 

Ok, that is a bold title and claim, but I love getting a gel nail polish manicure.  Why?  Here are my top reasons.

PRO’S

The shine is incredible!

It lasts me 2 week or 3 weeks if it’s a French Manicure

It’s thicker and feels a little like I have Acrylic Nails

I can do dishes, scrub bathrooms, and give the dog a bath and they DON’T chip.

Polish is DRY right after the cycle is complete in the LED Nail Lamp

You can file your nail and it doesn’t destroy your manicure.  *That’s why my French Manicure can last for 3 weeks.  Plus since the base is clear you can’t see the gap between the polish and cuticle like you can with a colored polish.

CON’S

The downside is they cost more than a normal manicure. 

You have to rough up your nails to get the Base Coat to stick

They are tough to get off.  They require a long soak in Acetone.

  

So when I can splurge, I splurge on a Gel Manicure.  I never need a Gel Pedicure since my polish on my toes lasts a month or longer unless I kick the corner of my bed frame, Ouch!

A way to save some $ is to buy your own LED Lamp that you can get for under $10 online.  I opted for a Gelish around $20 at my local Sally Beauty Supply.

I also picked up a few Gel Polishes.  The girl that worked at Sally’s said she preferred the Gelaze brand.  Look for one that has a base coat inside the color already so it saves you a step, and some $ as well. Here are two colors I purchased to start my small Gel Polish collection.

 

 

You have many brands to choose from for Gel Nail Polish now.  However I have not found a good Black yet.  They all seems watery and sheer.  When I brought it up to my manicurist she said the black color has to air out a bit and then the color concentrates.  She said it always takes 3 coats to do black instead of the normal 2 coats.  So if you get a black gel polish let it air out for an hour or so.

DONT NOT peel off the polish when it starts to chip.  It can damage your nails just like when you peel off acrylic nails.  The polish is bonded to your nail like acrylic nails are, and if you peel it off it takes off the top layer of your nail.  So either have the salon take it off since it takes a long soak.  Or invest in some Pure Acetone with a little metal cuticle pusher for  home use.  I made my own long soaking Acetone pads with small cotton ball piece and a piece of foil big enough to secure the Acetone soaked cotton to my nail for the 5-10 soak.   Then use the Cuticle Pusher to remove the polish gently.

I have also tried the drug store brands of “fake” gel polish.  You paint and dry just like normal polish.  They are shiny, and do last longer, but not 2 weeks like Gel Nail Polish.

 

 

Just like having acrylic nails or nail polish on your nails all the time isn’t good for them this special treat is fun to do, but not the best idea to have on your nails all the time.  Don’t forget to take good care of your nails and yourself.  Treats are just that, treats.  They are not good all the time.

Colleen’s Movie Review

I always give spoilers so consider yourself warned. =)

Romance: Loved the romance between Scott (Paul Rudd) and Hope (Evangeline Lily). It was sweet, well constructed, and funny. I like her, a lot. Actually, I’ve liked Evangeline in everything she’s done. She’s amazing. Together they are awesome. Loved the kiss when he’s like, “What? Not sure how this all happened but I’m not sorry it did.” 

Special Effects: Really surprising and funny. Liked the whole concept of getting smaller to infinity and making big scary scenes out of stuff that’s not frightening at all if you’re like…human sized.

What I Liked: The sidekick friends were hilarious! Baskin Robbins always knows. Priceless. Had to get a mango smoothie after the movie. Paul Rudd is awesome. Pretty much everything is great.

What I’d Change: Nothing really except maybe the cameos from other Marvel characters. I’d like this one to stand on it’s own. It didn’t need any help.

Hunky Hero: Paul Rudd to me is a bit like Chris Pratt. You don’t see him coming since he’s not your typical super hero, A lister kind of guy, but boy does he knock you over with just all around awesomeness. He’s a funny guy but also so hunky you just want to put your life at risk so he can come save you and then of course there’d be enthusiastic hugs and maybe a trip to Baskin Robbins after he did so. I’d pick him over Batman any day.

 

The Villain: I liked Darren Cross, the villain, as a bad guy much more before he put on the Yellow Jacket suit. He has a lot of charisma and charm and there’s a lot going on there beneath the surface. Those suits were killer. Think I have a thing for those powerful bald guys.

 

 

 

 

Best Line: 

Hank Pym: Scott, I need you to be the Ant-Man.

Scott Lang: One question… Is it too late to change the name?

Best Scene: Hmm, I’d say when his buddy is telling him stories and the people acted it out with his voice. Hilarious.

Josh’s Review: (Age 10)  I loved how the ants fought.  The ants were really cool, and could do lots cool stuff.  Those ants are really strong and powerful.


Sam’s Review (Age 12)   It was a fine movie. I got a little depressed each time an ant would die.  In fact my mom says she has to walk around all the ant piles in the front yard now so she won’t hurt them.  Who knew ants were so cool?

Ant-Man… I knew nothing about this movie prior to movie day, and even then all I knew was the most basic information. I’m not a huge Marvel fan and I don’t watch much tv or see many movies. All that being said, I loved this movie! I thought the casting was excellent. The bad guys were very believably creepy & evil. The good guys were like-able. And the ex-con sidekicks, especially Michael Peña’s character, Luis, were hilarious. Paul Rudd played the lead as Ant-Man, a regular guy turned criminal to right an injustice. I was unconvinced that he should be quite so adept and knowledgeable about committing crimes since it seemed he had only committed one prior to going to prison. This incongruity didn’t bother me though. All in all, it was a very enjoyable movie, even if you aren’t familiar with the Marvel universe. I laughed all the way through it. Very nicely done.

Mr. Ant-Man, Bring Me a Dream

 

And Marvel’s Ant-Man definitely delivered! Truly, Ant-Man is perhaps my favorite flick of the summer! Fresh, original, funny, and cleverly scripted. Though I grew up a Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man fan, obsessively collecting Spidey’s comic books, I can definitely see myself rooting for Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man.

This was the first I was exposed to this unique super-hero. Ant-Man was intriguing because he didn’t possess the awesome powers of most other Marvel heroes, but he utilized the craftiness and ingenuity of the ant colony to achieve his goals.

The casting was well done. Paul Rudd was charismatic in a geeky sort of way; Michael Douglas was great to watch; Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll (the villain), and even Luis all played their roles extremely well. Best of all were the special effects and action scenes. The super-small ant’s perspective and how he shrinks and expands at will were fascinating. I loved the cat and mouse scenes between the Falcon and Ant-Man.

There were also some emotional moments. This wasn’t your typical saving the world from destruction story-line (though there was that if Stoll a.k.a The Wasp had his way), but a father (Rudd) trying to save his daughter and to do good by her, despite his flimsy past. The humor was right up my alley and I laughed-out-loud several times—unusual for me at most films.  As first films go in most franchise films, this was excellent. 

I give this film 8 out of 10 Hulk Smash Fists.
