National Superhero Day

This past weekend, my husband and I finally went to see Morbius. I really enjoyed it (probably more than he did). Our first movie together was Avengers: Age of Ultron. I grew up watching the Batman, Wonder Woman, and Hulk series (among other lesser-known titles) – and still find it hard to pick my favorite! Although I don’t like reading comics, I love superheroes! This is why I used that theme for my book, Public Speaking Super Powers (publicspeakingsuperpowers.com).

What’s your favorite superhero? #NationalSuperheroDay

Tell a Story Day

As Frankenstein’s creature approached up the dark, stone stairway, I froze in my tracks, barely aware of the sputtering sound my torch made. He paused next to me on the stairs and asked, “If you don’t inspire, you expire, right?” I nodded and he went on his way, bent on strangling someone. #TellAStoryDay Tag! Your turn to tell a story!

World Intellectual Property Day

Today is #WorldIntellectualPropertyDay, a yearly celebration of Intellectual Property's (IP) role in stimulating innovation and creativity. As authors, we need to be aware of what is going on in the IP space. When I saw this Bill Gates quote – “Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana.” -- a chill went down my spine. I hope it isn’t true.

World Creativity and Innovation Day

Humans are innately creative, and it is that creativity that leads to innovation. I think authors are uniquely creative and innovative because not only do they express these things with their books but inspire them in others with their words. #WorldCreativityAndInnovationDay

Look-Alike Day

It is said that everyone has a look-alike. Many people think it’s a celebrity, but more than likely this look-alike is either an ordinary person or doesn’t exist. When I was younger, people often told me I looked like Gillian Anderson from The X-Files or Susan Gibney, who played Dr. Leah Brahms on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Personally, I don’t see it. But then, people said I looked like my sister, and I didn’t see that until only recently. So, who is your celebrity “look-alike”?

Small Beginnings, Great Endings

Last year, I visited the start of the Mississippi River. It is a small, unassuming creek. And yet, at the other end, where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico, it is a great seaport. The other day, I mused that you could take inspiration from that river, for from small beginnings can come great things.

That is the way it is with a book. You start small – the seed of an idea. And you don’t know if that idea will blossom into a bestseller or wither away and disappear. But if you believe in that idea, work with that small beginning. Nurture it and go on that journey to where ever it empties. Who knows? You might just have the makings of a great book!

Happy Birthday Leonardo Da Vinci!

"It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things."
~ Leonardo Da Vinci

One thing I really like about working with authors is that those who hire me are doers. OK, sometimes that habit of action gets in the way, but at least they are doing something and making their dream come closer to reality through that action. How about you? Do you let things happen? Or do you happen to things?
