israels anti-fur bill

The International Anti-Fur Coalition has been covering developments concerning an Israeli bill that would ban fur and the most recent news is worrisome.

Animal activists everywhere including Brigitte Bardot and Sir Paul McCartney were elated when Israel came close to voting in the bill which was introduced by MK Ronit Tirosh MK means "Member of the Knesset" which is the legislative branch of the Israeli government. The vote was scheduled to take place on September 2. But at the last minute the Israeli Minister of Religious Services Yakov Margi asked to have the bill reviewed again – a huge disappointment ! There are millions of animals slaughtered each year for their fur.

The meeting in which the bill would have likely been voted in was cancelled and the bill is now in jeopardy. To get the bill back on track animal rights organizations have requested that a meeting take place between both sides to mediate the situation. This sudden reversal was unexpected in a country where popular sentiment is for the bill. Even the main opponent of the bill MK Mozes admitted that he was moved by photos of animals who have been victims of the fur trade and went so far as to say that religious leaders should be the ones who fight for the suffering animals.

So why the controversy about a bill that has such broad support? As you may have guessed the fur industry has lobbyists and they are not happy about this bill. According to the Human Society the Minister for Trade is also under pressure from the fur industry. Here is what you can do to convince the Israeli Parliament to do the right thing:

You can write to the Minister for Trade encouraging him to support the bill here
There is a great sample letter and additional contact information here.
You can also find contact information for MK Mozez and Minister Margi here.

Remember it's important to personalize your letters! Politicians do read letters so it's very important that you send your version not just a carbon copy of the letter provided by the good organizations that research these important issues for us. Please take a moment to write a few sentences at the top of the letter provided above for the second link no letter is provided so you can adapt what you wrote for the first one or third link and email away!. If you have relatives in Israel encourage them to write in as well!

Passage of this bill in Israel would set a precedent for other countries…let's end the fur trade in Israel and all over the world!

charities in detroit

I just wanted to highlight some great sounding charities in Detroit....I had a lot of fun shooting Vamps there and quite enjoyed the city. It feels real and the architecture is stimulating and interesting. I met many groovy people on really neat paths. Here are some of the organizations that I found out about while in Detroit:

Forgotten Harvest relieves hunger in Detroit by rescuing surplus prepared and perishable foods and donating it to emergency food providers....sounds amazing!!!!! I love the non-wasting philosophy together with feeding people in need! Yay! You can donate to Forgotten Harvest here and find out about volunteer opportunities here.

Goodwill Industries of greater Detroit trains underprivileged people to gain job skills and helps to place them not just in jobs but careers. Their whole philosophy is to help people to gain the skills they need to secure lifelong employment. After placing people in jobs Goodwill Industries continues to follow up with them and helps with services like transportation and childcare. You can donate to Goodwill Industries here.

S.A.Y. Detroit Super All Year Project was founded by author Mitch Albom and provides health and human services including food shelter and medical care to the homeless population in Detroit. Among its projects are building a daycare for the children of homeless women and building a medical clinic for the homeless population. You can find out more about S.A.Y. Detroit here and you can donate here.

What's your favorite local charity?

treats in detroit

While in Detroit I explored some nice local Michigan companies who are making good quality treats. They are more dessert in my brain - I wouldn't have these as a meal as I try to be superhero as often as possible. But in a pinch these are great go-to snacks! Check it out:

A company called Pure NRG Raw makes some pretty decent vegan bars. Now I'm not a believer in bars all the time...but when I'm at work for 15 hours a day and need a snack....these are fun! I enjoyed the cherry pecan brownie bar and carob peanut butter flavors the most!

Another bar I liked is the Raw Way Lean Green Crunch - it's darn good and made with spirulina nuts raisins and agave.

I also had a local almond butter that Kind Lifer Wendy brought to me....seriously insanely delicious!!!! Krysten Ritter pictured above loves it and so does the whole hair and makeup trailer. I like it so much although it has sucanat non-refined sugar cane in it...so not superhero....but soooooo good.

Local organic grocer Plum Market locations in Ann Arbor Bloomfield and West Bloomfield has the best cookies I've had since being in Detroit! The peanut butter cookie is insane! The oatmeal cookies and trail mix cookies are amazing too! Holy moly! The fig bar is nice also but wow those cookies are the best! They are in the little fresh bakery part of the store. They say vegan on a little sign. Not superhero...I repeat not superhero! But an occasional treat for a superhero doesn't hurt.

Avalon Bakery is another cute place that happens to supply Plum Market. I got two loaves of bread there one cherry-walnut and another scallion-dill. Both were delicious with this olive tapenade we got there too.

Next door was a place called Goodwell's Natural Foods Market one of my favorite places so far. We walked there which took about thirty minutes and the people hanging out there were so neat. They were older people who were groovy and relaxed just sitting outside enjoying their snacks. One older man had long dreds. It just had good vibes! In the store we had a great fresh salad which I was really needing. We also had some rice dream ice cream bars. It was just an all-around great place!

I like that all of these companies are Michigan-based. What are your favorite local snacks?

a kind lifer meetup in detroit!

I had a little impromptu meet and greet with Kind Lifers in the Detroit area while I was there filming Vamps. It was so nice to sit and chat with everyone. I love getting feedback about the site and learning about everyone's journey of how they got there. Kind Lifer Sheena brought naughty and yummie vegan cupcakes from Cupcake Station in Ann Arbor...the ones with the coffee flavored icing were insane.

A huge thank you to Angela Jodi Elizabeth Michelle Andree Janet Wendy Sheena Lisa and her husband Tony Cheryl and Diana for coming out. You were all so sweet and I really enjoyed learning a little about each of you. I look forward to seeing you on the site and I do hope you all start a Detroit area Vegan Potluck!!!

feeding krysten ritter is fun!

Feeding my Vamps costar Krysten Ritter is so fun! here is what she sent me from set the other day!

"I loooove this seaweed dish thing...and I loved the cranberry quinoa dish. It tasted like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!!!! Literally was shoveling it into my face. hahahaha"

Recently she came over to my trailer and she asked "What's this?" sounding kind of concerned. And I said "It must be seitan." She said "It tastes a lot like chicken...almost too much like chicken!" I explained to her what seitan was and then later in the day she said she loved it.

I love feeding her!

bill clintons vegan diet

Word has leaked that our former President Bill Clinton recently adopted a vegan diet thanks to the encouragement of his vegan daughter Chelsea!

The eco-blogosphere is abuzz about this exciting news!

Here is what Bill has to say about the change:

"I'm trying to be one of those experimenters. Since 1986 several hundred people who have tried essentially a plant-based diet not ingesting any cholesterol from any source have seen their bodies start to heal themselves — break up the arterial blockage break up the calcium deposits around the heart. 82 percent of the people who have done this have had this result so I want to see if I can be one of them."

We know that President Clinton has read The China Study by T. Colin Campbell PhD and that he has dropped over 20 pounds since starting his vegan diet. Yay Bill! I'm so excited for him!

What do you think about President Clinton's new lifestyle?

a day in detroit

Recently I went with Kind Lifer Lisa to the Arts Beats and Eats festival of bands and artists in Detroit. I found one artist I loved Urban Landscapes Pottery's Laura Macntyre and I bought 4 bowls from her.

I'm so happy because I've been meaning to buy soup bowls for two years and now I can cross it off my list. I really like them - perfect size for nabe yaki udon from my book or for any large soup. I was so happy to find this perfect size!

Then we went to Royal Oak as suggested by Kind Lifer Shannon Hall who told us to go to a crepe spot What Crepe - they have vegan crepes if you ask. Our waitress was vegan too and she recommended a crepe filled with avocado sundried tomatoes asparagus spinach mushrooms and an orange jalepeno sauce....delicious!!! Then we shared a crazy one with chocolate bananas pecans and ice cream...we went nuts clearly! I'm not sure I ultimately made the best dessert combo - don't get me wrong it was good....but the savory crepe was delicious and I would love to have that again and again.

Our waitress also recommended the apple pie crepe done vegan. But Lisa and I weren't feeling apple pie. Lisa came up with an idea for blueberry agave and banana - maybe next time since you can build your own crepes!

We both left with headaches from the sugar. It was fun for a second and I'd do it again but maybe a crepe with strawberries fresh bananas and pecans but no ice cream or chocolate - a super yummy no-headache dessert with maybe a tiny drizzle of agave to top it off.

Has anyone been there and had the perfect combo for a sweet crepe or do you have any other vegan crepe combo you can recommend?
