June 17th ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

Primary Season is Over

~        The final primary vote was the Democratic primary held in District of Columbia on Tuesday June 14th.

~        Hillary Clinton won 16 out of the 20 available delegates with the remaining 4 awarded to Bernie Sanders.

~        Clinton has earned 2,219 pledged delegates in total.

~        This does not meet the 2,383 threshold for nomination.

~        However, she also has the support of 581 unbound delegates and is therefore the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Sanders Refuses to Suspend His Campaign

~        Even though Clinton is now the presumptive nominee, Sanders still refuses to bow out of the race.

~        He also refuses to explicitly endorse Clinton.

~        However, on Thursday June 16th he reiterated his pledge to work with Clinton to defeat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Trump Losing Ground According to Polls

~        According to polls pitting Trump against Clinton, Clinton appears to be widening her lead.

~        Clinton topped all polls in June by 3-12 points.

~        On Friday June 17th Trump defended the slide by stating “I haven’t started yet”.

June 11th ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

Hillary Clinton Declares Herself the Presumptive Democratic Nominee

~        All but one of the remaining Democratic primaries have now been held.

~        Clinton claimed victory in six out of eight states this week including California and New Jersey where a large number of delegates were at stake.

~        This brings her total delegate count to 2203 or 2784 including unbound delegates.

~        Even though the unbound delegates can technically change their mind before the convention, it has been widely accepted that she is set to win the nomination.

~        On Tuesday June 7th Clinton took to the stage in New York to declare herself the presumptive nominee.

~        Bernie Sanders who trails with 1828 bound delegates and 49 unbound delegates made a speech in California on the same day vowing to take his fight all the way to the convention.

~        However, later in the week, after a meeting with President Barack Obama, Sanders appears to have changed his stance somewhat (see below).

Sanders Vows to Help Unify the Party

~        On Thursday June 9th Sanders met with Obama and emerged from the meeting stating that he will work with Clinton to defeat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

~        Although he has not stepped out of the race, his statement has eased some concerns about a divide within the party.

Obama Has Officially Announced That He Will Back Clinton

~        Shortly after Obama’s meeting with Sanders, a video was released in which Obama pledges his support for Clinton.

~        He states that he is “fired up and cannot wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary”.

June 3rd 2016 ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

Donald Trump Wins Enough Delegates to Secure Nomination

~        On May 24th the Washington Republican primary was held.

~        Trump was awarded 40 of the available 44 delegates.

~        He has also won the support of some unpledged delegates who hadn’t previously given their backing.

~        This takes his total to 1239 delegates which surpasses the required 1237.

~        Although Trump has been the presumed nominee for weeks there was still some speculation about the possibility of a contested convention.

~        Reaching the threshold number means that this is no longer the case.

~        However, Trump won’t officially become the Republican nominee until the delegates cast their votes at the July National Convention.

Hillary Clinton Makes Bold Statements Against Trump

~        On Thursday June 2nd Clinton used a foreign policy speech to take aim at Trump.

~        Among other statements, Clinton branded Trump as “unprepared” and “temperamentally unfit” for the role of President.

~        She also stated that his ideas are a mix of “bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies”.

~        Trump responded to Clinton’s speech by calling it “pathetic” and “sad to watch”.

House Speaker Backs Trump

~        House Speaker Paul Ryan is the highest ranking Republican office holder.

~        Until now Ryan has refused to back Trump.

~        However, on Thursday June 2nd he announced that he has decided to support Trump in spite of their differences.

Major Primaries This Week

~        All but one of the remaining primaries will be held this week.

~        For the Democrats there are a large number of delegates at stake, particularly in New Jersey (142) and California (546).

~        Bernie Sanders still trails Clinton by a fairly large margin so would need big wins this week to catch her, but it’s still technically possible.

May 24th 2016 ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

More Primaries Held

~        Primaries continue to be held for both parties.

~        On the Democratic side Bernie Sanders has decreased Hillary Clinton’s lead, but only slightly.

~        Wins for Sanders in West Virginia and Oregon and a virtual draw in Kentucky won him 79 delegates compared to Clinton’s 63.

Trump Softens Stance on Muslim Ban

~        Earlier in his campaign Trump suggested a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US as a security measure.

~        This proposal has been met with much criticism both in the US and abroad.

~        On Wednesday May 11th Trump appeared to have softened his stance saying “it was just a suggestion”.

~        There is speculation that these new comments may be an effort to help repair the divided Republican Party and to help future foreign relations.

Trump and Clinton Ramp Up Attack Campaigns

~        Trump has been making comments regarding Bill Clinton’s history including bringing up past sexual assault allegations.

~        Meanwhile Clinton has been making comments about Trump’s allegedly questionable business activities.

Trump Overtakes Clinton in Presidential Polls

~        Ongoing polls ask the voting public who they would choose in the case of a Trump vs. Clinton presidential race.

~        According to average data taken from multiple national polls, on May 22nd Trump appeared to edge ahead of Clinton.

~        While Trump has overtaken Clinton by a very small margin, it is being seen as a pivotal point in the election race.

~        While some believe that early polls are not a good indicator of the outcome of the General Election, others believe that many voters make a firm choice at this early stage.

May 6th 2016 ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump Win In the Indiana Primaries

~        On Tuesday May 6th the Indiana primaries were held for both parties.

~        On the Republican side Trump won with 53.3% of the votes and was awarded all of the available Republican delegates.

~        This meant both Ted Cruz and John Kasich were left empty-handed and Trump increased his already significant lead.

~        On the Democratic side Sanders won by a margin of 5.4%, receiving 44 of the available delegates.

~        Hillary Clinton still managed to win 38 delegates so her lead was only narrowed by 6.

~        While it’s not mathematically impossible for Sanders to clinch the nomination he will have to win around 65% of the remaining votes to still be in contention.

~        He would then have the task of winning over a large portion of the unpledged delegates, most of whom have voiced their support for Clinton.

Cruz and Kasich Exit the Race

~        Cruz announced his exit from the race on Tuesday after initial results came in from Indiana.

~        Kasich waited until the following day to announce that he would also no longer be running.

~        This of course leaves Trump as the presumed Republican nominee.

~        With Cruz and Kasich out of the picture Trump will now have the opportunity to focus more of his efforts on his presumed General Election campaign.

Coming Up….

Primaries and Caucuses Continue

~        More primaries and caucuses are scheduled for the coming weeks.

~        On the Democratic side Clinton and Sanders will continue to battle it out for delegates.

~        You may be wondering about the Republican Party primaries and caucuses now that the party has a presumed nominee in Trump.

~        The voting events will still take place with some former nominees’ names appearing on the ballot due to state rules.

~        While votes for these people may appear inconsequential some may see it as an opportunity to cast “protest votes”.

~        Voter turnout for these events is expected to be less than if there were still more nominees in the race.

~        In some states voters have not yet been required to register for a specific party.

~        In these states some Republican Party supporters may now register as Democrats to place strategic votes in support of or against Trump.

April 29th 2016 ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

Ted Cruz and John Kasich Divide their Efforts

~        Since it is impossible for Cruz or Kasich to get the required number of delegates required for nomination before the convention, they have decided to divide their efforts to try to stop Trump from an outright win.

~        On Sunday April 24th it was announced that Cruz would be focusing his efforts in Indiana and Kasich would focus his time in Oregon and New Mexico.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Win Big in the East Coast Primaries

~        On Tuesday April 26th primaries were held in five states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

~        On the Democratic side Clinton won four out of five states while Bernie Sanders won Rhode Island, widening Clinton’s lead significantly.

~        On the Republican side Trump swept all five states by a significant margin, making it more likely he could secure the nomination prior to the convention.

Cruz Announced his Running Mate

~        Cruz named Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential running mate.

~        Fiorina was originally in the running for the Republican Presidential nomination but dropped out in February after poor results.

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

New York Primaries

The NY primaries were held for both parties on Tuesday April 19th.
These were especially important because of the high number of delegates at stake (95 Republican and 291 Democratic).
On the Republican side Donald Trump had a successful night and won most of the available delegates.
It has become impossible for Ted Cruz or John Kasich to reach the required number of delegates before the convention.
However, it may also be tough for Trump to reach the required number; an open Republican convention remains a possibility.
On the Democratic side Hillary Clinton beat Bernie Sanders 57.9% to 42.1%. This translates to 139 delegates for Clinton and 106 for Sanders.

Coming Up….

Multiple Primaries on Tuesday April 26th

Primaries are set to be held in five states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
You may hear it dubbed “Super Tuesday” although that name was also used for other Tuesdays when multiple primaries were held.
Total delegates available: Republican ~ 172; Democratic ~ 462.

Recent Election Highlights

Colorado Delegates Decided

As the primaries and caucuses continue the gap between the leading Republican candidates, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, is narrowing.
It is becoming increasingly clear that every delegate counts.
The Colorado Republican rules were recently changed and on Saturday April 9th it was announced that Ted Cruz had won all of the 34 Republican delegates for that state.
This caused outrage from Donald Trump who claims the system has been manipulated to work against him.

Democratic Debate in Brooklyn, NY

April 14th saw Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders go head to head on a variety of issues.
This debate was especially important due to the weight of the upcoming New York primaries (see below).

Coming Up….

New York Primaries on Tuesday April 19th

The NY primaries are scheduled for both parties on this date.
These are especially important because of the high number of delegates at stake (95 Republican and 291 Democratic).
In the Republican camp Ted Cruz has the opportunity to gain significantly on Donald Trump. However polls suggest that Trump is likely to win by a large margin in his home state.
In the Democratic race Sanders has the opportunity to gain significantly on Clinton. However, seeing that Clinton is the current Senator of New York a win there will be a lot to ask of Sanders.
