June 3rd 2016 ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election Highlights

Donald Trump Wins Enough Delegates to Secure Nomination

~        On May 24th the Washington Republican primary was held.

~        Trump was awarded 40 of the available 44 delegates.

~        He has also won the support of some unpledged delegates who hadn’t previously given their backing.

~        This takes his total to 1239 delegates which surpasses the required 1237.

~        Although Trump has been the presumed nominee for weeks there was still some speculation about the possibility of a contested convention.

~        Reaching the threshold number means that this is no longer the case.

~        However, Trump won’t officially become the Republican nominee until the delegates cast their votes at the July National Convention.

Hillary Clinton Makes Bold Statements Against Trump

~        On Thursday June 2nd Clinton used a foreign policy speech to take aim at Trump.

~        Among other statements, Clinton branded Trump as “unprepared” and “temperamentally unfit” for the role of President.

~        She also stated that his ideas are a mix of “bizarre rants, personal feuds and outright lies”.

~        Trump responded to Clinton’s speech by calling it “pathetic” and “sad to watch”.

House Speaker Backs Trump

~        House Speaker Paul Ryan is the highest ranking Republican office holder.

~        Until now Ryan has refused to back Trump.

~        However, on Thursday June 2nd he announced that he has decided to support Trump in spite of their differences.

Coming Up…

Major Primaries This Week

~        All but one of the remaining primaries will be held this week.

~        For the Democrats there are a large number of delegates at stake, particularly in New Jersey (142) and California (546).

~        Bernie Sanders still trails Clinton by a fairly large margin so would need big wins this week to catch her, but it’s still technically possible.
