July 22nd 2016 ~ Election Update

These updates are an accompaniment to my book The 2016 Presidential Election. As promised I will keep things short and concise so that you can stay up-to-date without taking too much time out of your day.

Recent Election News

Republican National Convention Held

~        The Republican National Convention is was held July 18th – 21st in Cleveland, Ohio

~        During the convention it was made official that Donald Trump is the Republican nominee for the upcoming General Election.

~        Some of the most well-received speakers at the convention were Trump’s children, four of whom spoke on various evenings about their father and his platform.

~        One of the least well-received speakers was former candidate Ted Cruz who was booed off the stage after refusing to officially endorse Trump.

~        Cruz later stated that he would not be a “servile puppy” to someone who had attacked his family.

~        Trump closed the convention with a speech that focused on his plans to create a safer America.

Hillary Clinton Chooses Running Mate

~        On Friday July 22nd Clinton announced that she has chosen Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate.

~        Kaine has long been considered a leading contender for the role.

~        He was vetted for the role of Vice President by Barack Obama in 2008 but Obama finally chose Joe Biden.

~        Clinton describes Kaine as “a relentless optimist who believes that no problem is unsolvable if you put in the work to solve it.”

~        Kaine is fluent in Spanish which is expected to help the Democrats appeal to Latino voters.

~        Other contenders for the role were former Iowa governor Tom Vilsak, Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Democratic National Convention to Be Held

~        The Democratic National Convention is set to be held July 25th – 28th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

~        Clinton is the presumptive nominee having secured the majority of delegates in the primaries and caucuses.

~        Bernie Sanders is still technically in the race but it is extremely unlikely that he will win nomination.

~        However, the delegates are still required to submit their votes during the convention.

~        Since Clinton is the presumptive nominee, the convention will likely be more focused on the General Election campaign than on the nomination process.

Recent Election News

Bernie Sanders Officially Endorses Hillary Clinton

~        Sanders officially announced on Tuesday July 12th that he endorses Clinton as the Democratic nominee.

~        The two appeared together in a rally in New Hampshire where Sanders declared that Clinton had “won the Democratic nominating process.”

~        Sanders pledged to do everything he can to ensure that Clinton wins the race for presidency.

~        Although he has endorsed Clinton, Sanders remains an active candidate and has pledged to do so until the Democratic National Convention in late July.

~        Meanwhile Sanders has secured a top speaking spot at the convention alongside First Lady Michelle Obama.

~        He has also announced plans for various educational and political projects which will aim to maintain the momentum of his progressive movement.

“Never Trump” Movement Proposals Rejected

~        A group of Republican delegates who oppose Donald Trump’s nomination tried to have the rules changed in their favor.

~        They proposed to the party’s rules committee that changes should be made such that delegates would become unbound and be allowed to vote for the candidate of their choice.

~        However, the rules committee rejected the proposal by a vote of 87-12.

~        This has now quashed any speculation of rule changes prior to the Republican National Convention that might prevent Trump from gaining the nomination.

Trump Announces His Running Mate

~        Trump has announced that his running mate will be Indiana Governor Mike Pence.

~        Trump and Pence appear to clash on many issues, but this is also a signal that Trump is attempting to unify the party and win back some Republicans whose views differ from his own.

~        Trump had expressed the wish to wait until the convention to make the announcement, but Indiana law required Pence to withdraw his name from the governor ballot, prompting the early announcement.

Republican National Convention to Be Held

~        The Republican National Convention is set to be held July 18th – 21st in Cleveland, Ohio.

~        Trump is the presumptive nominee having secured the vast majority of delegates in the primaries and caucuses.

~        However, the delegates are still required to submit their votes during the convention.

~        Since Trump is the presumptive (and only) nominee, the convention will be more focused on the General Election campaign than on the nomination process.

~        While conventions often tend to have a celebratory atmosphere, it is anticipated that this one will also draw considerable numbers of Trump protestors who oppose his presidential candidacy.

FBI Close Investigation into Hillary Clinton

~        The FBI has closed their investigation into Clinton’s use of e-mails while she was secretary of state.

~        Although they found misuse of private e-mails they did not find evidence of intent.

~        However, the US State Department has announced that it will now reopen its own investigation.

~        While the state investigation is not as serious as the FBI investigation, this still comes at an inconvenient time for Clinton who would prefer to focus solely on her campaign.

Donald Trump Raises Rumors about His Intentions

~        In a New York Times interview Trump was asked if he would actually serve as President if elected.

~        Trump refused to answer the question definitively.

~        This raised speculation as to whether he wants to serve as President or to simply win the Election.

~        While the notion seems illogical, it is not the first time his intentions have been called into question.

~        Early in his candidacy it was speculated as to whether he wanted to the role of President or his candidacy was more of a vanity campaign.
