Humanity

If I owned life, I’d fly

Flap my wings and rise up into the sky

I’d laugh at everything I see

I’d become the opposite of me

If I was the one and only God

I’d play tricks on you all you see

I’d reward the one you least expected to be

My favorite human in humanity

To me this is a silly game

The rules are written by another me

And I long yes long to be free

Let me be, let me be me

Edward is Back!

For those of you who read my novella The Last Observer and liked it, there might be some good news…. Edward is back! Yes, the thoughtful Magician who tried to save Stanley from being snuffed out by a black magic lodge, is the key character in the prequel follow up – The Lord of the Elements – out soon. I am in the last chapter or so now and will soon be issuing it in Kindle format.

Although it is a prequel, it should be read after The Last Observer otherwise it will spoil that book’s plot. Perhaps it is best positioned as book #2 in a series that investigates Edward’s past.

Drawing on my magical knowledge and interest, The Lord of the Elements includes a magic ritual that goes wrong, the discovery of a Grimoire written by a reputed immortal magician, a man whose very soul is at risk after a chance engagement with a black magic lodge, and Edward…… Lot’s of quick twists and turns and a surprise along the way…

The Lord of the Elements – a novella out soon.

Living Ghosts

My latest Kindle Short in the Paranormal Eyewitness series is titled – Ghosts of the Living. I guess that is a sort of mismatch of terms – ghosts of living people….. and therein lies the fun of this book. What I discovered is that there are a number of ways that living people can appear as ghosts…. here are a few – bilocation, doppelgangers, and astral projection. So I covered these and other similar phenomena and I arrived at a conclusion that I rather like actually.

In moments of danger, stress, or near sleep, we probably all have the ability to bilocate or be in two places at once. The book is filled with short but real examples as well.

Funnily enough, I was telling a friend about the book this weekend and they told me a rather amazing story that could have been in the book. It goes like this…

A family were haunted by a young woman’s ghosts for many months. The  ghost did not want them in the house and in the end, the family could stand it no longer and put the house on the market. A few days later, a prospective buyer viewed the house and fell in love with it making a good offer. When the family met the woman making the offer, they were horrified to find the ‘ghost’ that had been haunting the house….. The woman so liked the house that she inadvertently bilocated there as a ghost?

Nice story huh?

Why not take a look at the book – Ghosts of the Living – out now on Kindle. Buy it here for just 99 cents.

Expertise is the New Arrogance

The other week, I was told I was arrogant in a social media forum. The other person then cut me off and cut all ties altogether.

I looked up arrogant and arrogance to see if it were true, that I am arrogant. One definition that I found was this – an attitude of superiority manifested in an overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions.

Now, I am pretty sure I don’t feel superior to anybody. Quite the reverse in fact. I think I am a bloody mess of emotions, thoughts, and reactions like most of the rest of humanity and that occasionally, when I remember, I am trying to figure all of this out. On the other hand, I am increasingly concerned by what I see in the world as the death of the expert. And in the context of the conversation that got me into such trouble, I was the expert and that wasn’t at all appreciated.

The other party in this has a particular view of the world, which when challenged by the reality of the situation, reacts with accusations of arrogance. I wasn’t trying to be arrogant. I was trying to educate and inform, and in of itself, when that is unwanted I guess it is arrogant to try. Perhaps it is best to let people live in their own dreamworld?

When we get the stage that people accuse their experts of being arrogant because they have 30-years of practical experience with something, then I truly believe we are in trouble as a species. Me? Maybe I am getting old and cranky but I preferred the pre-social media era when expertise was sought out and things like flat Earth, wonderful renewables, climate change and so on, were not topics of conversation between people who didn’t actually have a basic grasp of science, how the grid works, geology, and so on, but instead called themselves Earth loving pagans. I mean, I don’t involve myself in conversations were I have nothing to offer. I don’t pretend to be an ‘expert’ on say health, diet, sex, and so on. But I would hope that qualifications and 30-years of experience as an energy and commodities analyst would count for something.

On the other hand, perhaps I do go in like a bull in a china shop sometimes…. I am sure I do upset people that way. I’m just a blunt Yorkshireman who has become exasperated with the world. A dinosaur perhaps who still believes in the principles of honesty, hard work and yes, expertise. and who doesn’t suffer fools … now if that makes me arrogant then I am arrogant and I am happy to be that way.

Deep down though, I am disturbed by this incident. It’s not that I mind being name called or told what I am by people I have never met and only know through tenuous ‘occult’ connections. It is the growing sense of fear that the world is heading down the toilet of mediocrity, conformity, and disrespect for expertise and wisdom. We have seen how the old in society are treated this last century and now everyone is suddenly an expert at everything. It doesn’t look good to me. Not at all.

Then there is the politicization of expertise. This is where we are told by groups of people what the truth is backed by ‘science’ and any disagreement is cited as contrary to the accepted viewpoint. The science is proven and such stuff and nonsense. This is a symptom of the same problem. an ‘expert’ on science would instantly know that science is never proven and thrives on open debate. Science is dying. It has been hijacked by politicians and dreamers who use it to promote an agenda – their own agenda without actually realizing in many instances that they are acting in a manner that is contrary to the pursuit of science.

But then, who would listen to this arrogant PhD holder about how to do science huh?

And for many these days, there it is – arrogance! Actually citing his PhD…. what an arrogant twat he is having the audacity to cover his obvious lack of self worth with his degree….

You know, I used to use the title ‘Dr.’. It was meant something. These days people tell me its arrogant to cite the PhD or have people call me Dr. Vasey. I have even had book reviewers who’s sole comment was that I was arrogant for using the Dr. before my name and obviously had a self worth issue going on….

Twenty years plus ago, those who had earned degrees had respect. The title Professor or Doctor meant and means something to me – I respect those who hold such titles while I may still disagree with them. These days, academic titles and degrees are simply a sign of someone with a personality disorder. Expertise, education, knowing your stuff – well, its like age isn’t it – it’s to be despised and distrusted.

God help us all.

‘Uncle’ Jack

I learned in the last few minutes of the passing away of Uncle Jack. He had, as we say, a good innings and in the end, I think he faded away as a result of old age. He wasn’t my Uncle at all but that is what I called him. He was my Dad’s best friend and they had known each other since childhood. I’m sure Dad will be pleased to have welcomed him to the other side…

Jack was a constant figure in my childhood. We vacationed with him and his family, went weekend camp meets with them and much more. My Dad had no family to speak of and so Jack, his best friend, truly played the role of Uncle to me and my brothers. He was a lovely man and he would joust with me for hours on end jovially about politics, religion and other topics. He professed to be a socialist and I never was. He was an atheist and I never was…. These were always well-informed conversations from which I learned. I enjoyed talking with him.

Jack probably had something of a hand in steering my life perhaps inadvertently. Even as a young boy, I was interested in Geology and on a holiday in Cornwall one year, we all went to visit an old Cornish tin mine. My Dad and Jack described what it might have been like to work there and Jack asked me how I would like to work there. My reply, I was quite young, was something along the lines of…”I wouldn’t have worked there. I’d have owned it!” Needless to say, this was the topic of many a conversation over the next couple of decades…. I don’t recall what Jack’s reply was but I know that it made me try harder to put myself in a better position in life.

Another wonderful memory is of south Wales. The day wasn’t wonderful and so either Dad or Jack bought some hard peas and peashooters. For the next hour or so, we had such a giggle on the sea front. It was war! It was super fun.

RIP Uncle Jack.
