Reinventing the Franchise


The big news in the geek world this week: Superman and Batman are starting over. Again.

DC Comics announced it will release new, modern versions of its iconic heroes in 201o, contained in single, graphic-novel formats aimed at the booksellers' market. This is the latest attempt to bring Batman and Superman into the current century and expand their audience.

With this announcement, DC is taking the same tack that Marvel did a decade ago with its Ultimate line: rebooting its big-name characters...

Everything's Archie


I've been on a nostalgia kick lately, collecting as many copies as I can find of the old Archie Comics digests, the little paperback collections of stories about America's favorite teenager that my mom used to buy for us while waiting in the checkout line. It started when I found a treasure trove of them, all from the late 70s and early 80s, in a pile at Hi De Ho.

I didn't expect much. Archie has never been known as cutting-edge material, which is probably why mothers are still comfortable...
