My Rock Stars

Went to a new place, The Sandwich Spot, on Ocean Park for lunch today. And I'm not afraid to admit that the sole reason was because of the decor.

The walls were covered with the jackets to some of the all-time great comedy LPs. There was also a nice poster of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, back in their Silver Streak days, and another of John Candy.

While my friends were listening to Motley Crue, I was listening to comedy albums. I loved John Belushi the same way squealing teen girls now love J...

More Notes From the Road

* Thoughts I considered putting on Twitter, but, thankfully, did not.

Wow, it sure is rainy here in Portland. And hey, now I'm hydroplaning.
At least the meth users who rented this room before me were tidy.
Texas is really big. I mean, really REALLY big.
You know what Obama needs to do about that oil spill…

* My surprisingly space-age room at the Four Points Sheraton in Houston. Just when I was getting used to the places where they chained the remote to the TV .

* In Dallas, Texas, at 4:00...

Book Tour: Random Thoughts from the Road

* Heard "Band on the Run" three times, on three different stations while in the rental car. Within three hours. At first, I thought this was sort of amusing, because most rental cars don't have an iPod jack or auxiliary input. By day three on the road, I was seriously considering stabbing myself in the leg with a fork just to distract me while driving. I don't know if radio has gotten worse or if my tolerance for it has just been lowered by years of custom playlists. But I think the only...

Start spreading the news…

BLOOD OATH makes the New York Times.

Don't think of Mr. Farnsworth's debut thriller as the umpteenth vampire knockoff on the market. Think of it as the inventive one in which a brave young White House staff member asks, "You really expect me to believe we've got a vampire on a leash, and we can just send him after terrorists and spies whenever we want?"

Too pleased to feign any cool here. Still just stunned and amazed.

BOOK TOUR: Tattered Cover, Denver, 5.24.10

Thank you to the Tattered Cover for the rock-star treatment, and all the people who showed up, especially the ones who just wandered in and gave the book a chance based on the reading. Big thanks also to Peter Boyles and Greg Hollenback and everyone on his show for the early-morning interview, and all the kind words. Next stop, Phoenix, and the Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale on Wednesday, May 26.

And a big thanks to Bill and Mary, who drove almost two hours to make the reading last night. They...

Book Tour: Mysterious Galaxy 5.23.10

The signing at Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego was a real honor — it's one of the motherships for geeks in the country, and they showed great faith in a first-time author like me. Many thanks to Maryelizabeth, Patrick, Michael and everyone else at the store. Thanks also to the incredibly prolific author Nathan Long, author of Bloodborn, who was kind enough to share the time and his knowledge with me and the audience. I even got to see an old friend from high school and former colleagues from m...

Many, many thanks to Jean and Kayla and everyone who showed up. Truly great crowd, truly great night.

Me and Michael Buss, who was forced to attend because I married his niece.

Mike Andersen, another member of the unstoppable Farnsworth zombie army.

Book Tour: Mystery Bookstore, Westwood

Last night I got to read and sign books at the Mystery Bookstore in Westwood, near UCLA. It was really quite humbling to be in the company of all those authors I've read on the walls — and one in person, the legendary Thomas Perry, author of The Butcher's Boy and many others, including his latest, Strip.

It was a great time with great people. Some even came away with free BLOOD OATH T-shirts, which are going to be the hottest item in fashion, I hear.

Many thanks to Linda, Bobby, my peerless...

Excelsior!

I haven't been posting much lately because I've had a few things going — BLOOD OATH, on sale TUESDAY, MAY 18! Pre-order your copy NOW! — and I've been working on the second book,  following what I call the Scalzi rule: Is the novel done? No? Then no blogging.

But now I've got the first draft finished — I'm not fooling myself, I know there will be many edits — so I can get back to what's really important. Namely, the random stuff that occurs to me while watching TV and surfing the Net.

I'm in...
