The Friday Five!
1. Last night, I FINALLY finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I am so embarrassed how long it took me to read this book. My editor sent it to me back in early AUGUST and no, I am not kidding. Here it is mid October and I am finally finished. And it is not because it isn't a great book, because it is. I am just so SLOW with reading right now. In my defense, it is about 500 pages. But I still think I am seriously lame. This is one reason I have given up blurbing entirely for a while: I just c...

You know you're getting older when you actually hurt WHILE you exercise, instead of after. I just did push-ups for the first time and did something to my neck. Now, I can't look to the right or left without it hurting. And, I mean, you kind of NEED to look to your right and left. How am I going to cross the street? Good Lord.
In other news, the temperature has dropped here, and it's raining. I woke up this morning and thought one thing: crockpot. It's just that kind of day. I love my crockpot...

I'll start this entry saying that I was up about every two hours last night checking on my feverish daughter, so if what I write doesn't make sense....it's because I kind of feel like I've been hit by a bus. It's one of those days when I'm thinking about just diving into a pot of coffee and hoping for the best. Who's with me?

The Friday Five!
1. So yesterday, just as I was sitting down in a quiet, child-free house to get some stuff done, my internet went down. I knew right away it probably had something to do with the paving crew down by my mailbox: sure enough, they'd severed the phone line. Whoops! At first, I was frustrated, as I had so much to do. But then I decided to accept the challenge of a full day without being able to be online. And you know what? It was kind of nice. I got a LOT done without the distractions of Faceboo...

I'm sitting here listening to my dryer squeak and my dishwasher swoosh and wondering when, exactly, I got so domestic. I mean, it's only 7:14 and I'm in full Carol Brady mode (or maybe I should say Alice from Brady Bunch mode). Do you ever feel like your day is like a sprint? The gun goes off at six am, and the rest of the day I am just trying to keep pace. Somehow, I need to figure out how to make my day more like a marathon, that slow, steady thing. As Dr. Phil would say, "How's that workin...

Okay, so I'm back after a week of vacation, and now it is officially fall. I was kind of in denial (I'm good at that) until I felt the chill in the air and saw all the pumpkins and mums lining the roads on the way home. Today, I performed the seasonal ritual of moving my box of flip flops further back in the closet and taking out my Danskos. I know, I know: some of you will wear flip flops through the winter---I had students who did this, showing up in them when it was literally sleeting outs...

Burning questions
Yes, I am am technically on vacation and promised myself I'd take a break from blogging. But I saw in the comments---yes, I read them, every single one---that there was some question about what, exactly, is a shrimpburger. And I just HAD to respond. Basically, it's fried shrimp, cole slaw, cocktail and tartar sauce on a hamburger bun. Preferably served with onion rings. My favorites are from the Big Oak Drive-In in Salter Path, NC:

All I can say is: YUM.
We're having a lovely time here, catchi...

Good morning from NC's Crystal Coast, where the sun is not yet up but we are. It was raining most of the way down on Saturday, and some of yesterday, but the sun came out in the afternoon and was gorgeous. Plus, there have already been shrimpburgers. Gotta love that.
Okay, so I have to tell you about this place where we are staying. Due to a number of lucky factors, we got a really good deal on this beach house and snapped it up. And when we pulled up...I could not believe my eyes. I mean, I ...

The Friday Five!
1. How did I possibly miss the House premiere on Monday night? I did not want to believe it at first...but a quick question on Twitter confirmed all. (Thank you, everyone there, for your quick responses.) Anyway, thanks to iTunes and a credit I had there, I was able to download the premiere and watch it anyway. But still! Clearly, I need to be more vigilant. I know last night's was Grey's Anatomy (will watch it tonight) the Office already happened, and Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock aren't o...

Thanks to everyone who came out to Cary last night, in what was pretty much a downpour, to see me, Marianne Gingher and Courtney Jones Mitchell. We had such a great crowd, seriously, and it was really fun to meet to many readers. Plus we got to talk about writing---the good stuff, and the hard stuff, and all the stuff in between---and just generally gab, which we are REALLY good at (if you were there, you can attest to this. We could have gone on for hours, I am sure). I'm kind of sad to see ...
