Full Throttle Reviews: Meet Nina

Every Monday here at Full Throttle, we'll feature a review of an action-packed romance. One of the reviewers whose reviews we'll be featuring is the fabulous Nina from Nina's Literary Xscape.

Who is Nina?

My name's Nina and I love, love, love to read. I've always enjoyed reading as a kid and I've carried that with me to this day. I picked up my first romance novel several years ago and never looked back since. I read several Harlequins and fell in love with the romance genre, but it was really Judith McNaught who converted me to romance (love her so much by the way). Paradise by Judith McNaught is the only book that I've read more times than I can count and it's still one of my absolute favorites. Throughout the years, I've read & loved many sub-genres of adult romance including erotic romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, paranormal romance, historical romance as well as erotica.

I deal with the stresses of life by immersing myself in a good story. Romance to me is the ultimate escapism and comfort read. I love knowing that no matter what happens in the story, there's always a guaranteed happily ever after. :)

After purchasing my Kindle (my first e-reader & wisest choice ever) three years ago, I have come to discovered so many great books & authors. If only I have the time to read them all! My e-library is massive and my To-Be-Read list is endless, yet I can't seem to get enough of books! Yes, call me a book fiend. When not reading, you'll most likely find me browsing Amazon for more books since I seem to have a 1-Click addiction.

Aside from a reader, I'm also an amateur book reviewer. I'm not a professional book reviewer by any standards and I'm aware of that. Reviewing books is just one of my many hobbies. I'm just an average reader who loves to read . I started this blog as an outlet for me to share my personal thoughts and opinions on books that I've read with anyone willing to listen. I review books primarily here on my blog and on Amazon. You can also find me on Twitter and Goodreads. Happy Reading!

“The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination.” --Elizabeth Hardwick

Watch out for future Full Throttle Reviews from Nina!

FNatM: Resident Evil: Retribution

I finally got to see Resident Evil: Retribution. It didn't blow me away but it was an okay 1.5 hours of action, fight scenes and zombies.

Image: Pop Culture GeekMicro summary: Alice fights her way out of an underwater Umbrella Corporation facility that has simulated versions of Tokyo, New York, Suburbia and Moscow.

Coolest Parts:
~ I liked that the movie had lots of kick-butt female characters. Okay, okay, most were wearing skin-tight clothes but hey, if I was a kick-butt zombie killer with an awesome bod, maybe I'd wear those outfits too!
~ It was nice to see some characters from previous movies...even if they were clones.

Wanted more of:
~ A plot line. You don't really see Alice change or grow and all she has to do in the movie is escape.
~ The fight scenes were good...but I wanted great/different/new/exciting
~ Non-cheesy characters and moments
~ Smart zombies. I was hoping the zombies would do something cool or extra.

Watch if you like:
~ Fun action
~ Lots of kick-butt female characters
~ Zombies
~ Are a Resident Evil fan

Full Throttle Romance: kicking into high gear!

You might have noticed that my blog name has changed. It’s now Full Throttle Romance. Does that sound cool, or what?!

Image: Nathan E PhotographyI’ve been thinking it over for a while and instead of a personal blog (where I talk about myself!) I thought I’d morph my blog into one where I talk about what I love: fast-paced romance with action, adventure and excitement.

So you’ll see a few changes happening and I expect Full Throttle will grow and change over time. It won’t all happen at once (because I still have to find some time to write) but we’ll be talking about exciting romance, sharing book reviews from some reviewers who love action with their romance, having guest authors who write full throttle romance stop by, and talking about action/sci-fi TV shows and movies.

I’ll be sharing a bit more detail on what I have planned later in the week. So those of you out there who, like me, enjoy your romance combined with action and adventure, I hope you’ll stick around and have some fun.

Book Spotlight: Lusting the Enemy and Minion

Looking for some out-of-this-world reading? Here are a couple of stories to check out:

Lusting the Enemy by Mel Teshco

Akeisha is on a mission to be chosen as part of a harem for the desert king, Judas. She’ll use her body to entice and beguile, do anything it takes to save the near-extinct larakytes, her shape-shifting silver panther tribe, from Judas’ human subjects, who are trying to eradicate them.

She never expects to succumb to the wild ecstasy in his arms, a pleasure that threatens to expose her inner cat even as it transcends anything she’s ever felt from one of her own kind.

Falling in love with a human enemy was never part of the plan, but maybe there’s more to Judas than meets the eye.

A free read by Eleni Konstantine: Minion

Minion, a flash fiction story, is now up on the Antipodean SF site.

At the end of the month, the stories are archived by the National Library of Australia. You should find it listed here.

10 Essential Tips for Writing Short Stories

Short stories, Novellas, Cravings, Briefs, Quickies, Flirts, Ever Afters, Singles: The explosion in ebooks has seen the popularity of novellas and short stories on the rise.

Image: Savvy AuthorsMany authors think writing short is easy, just do what you usually do but with less words…wrong. Short story writing requires a whole different set of skills. Shorts are smaller, tighter pieces. What works well in a full length novel, doesn’t always translate in a short.

So, you’d like to write some shorter stories? Not sure where to start? Want some tips on how to go about writing lean and mean? Already tried some shorts but want to make them sharper, more intense?

Today at the Savvy Author blog, I’m sharing 10 essential tips every writer needs to know to write a short story with big impact. All the tips are from my online workshop, SHORT STORY, BIG IMPACT (which I'm teaching at Savvy Authors in June!)
