Reverb10 - 12/01/10 - One Word

Today's Reverb10 prompt is:

December 1 One Word.
Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you're choosing that word. Now, imagine it's one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you?
(Author: Gwen Bell)

2010- Breathtaking.

Because this year saw moments that took my breath away, but I also needed to remind myself on many occasions that I just needed to breathe, and everything would be okay.

2011- Made.

Because next year, I will be a maker, a creator, a builder or words and things.

Hi, LJ.

My pants have filed for Chapter 11. I know I missed tons, so if it was important or you needed something from me, please smack me upside the head and point me in the right direction.

Phoenix was warm, and then not, and then warm again. My Gramma was a delight, my nephew is FREAKING HUGE (I think that kid is like, six feet tall!), my sister and I giggled so much that we gave ourselves incurable hiccups, my Mom is awesome and wonderful, my Dad was not feeling well, but it was good to see him, and my stepmom was really, really thrilled when I gave her the autoharp I fixed up for her. Also, Dad and Kelly's cat is 16 pounds of Maine Coon love.

I wrote some stuff. And we had Christmas, because fuck it, Jesus was probably born in September anyway, and I'm a pagan with agnostic leanings and notes of Quaker. (I need to stop reading coffee descriptions.)

In conclusion, Bookmans owns my soul, forever and always. If I ever do a book signing in the Phoenix area, I want it to be there.

Reviews, story updates, and general chatter.

We've gotten some great reviews lately, and I realized that I hadn't shared any of them.

From Mrs. Giggles comes this lovely quote:

"Despite being set in a Mos Eisley Cantina-style setting, The Balance Of Silence has very little action. This is a romance with more internal conflict and character study than fireworks. The lack of action is compensated amply by the poetic relationship developing between Riv and Ducks, however. These two men are both damaged inside, and it is a beautiful kind of catharsis to see them slowly heal in each company's however."

And Scandalous Minx at Literary Nymphs has given us 4 1/2 nymphs!

"The Balance of Silence is a well written sci-fi saga that reflects on second chances, forgiveness, acceptance and finding love. S. Reesa Herberth and Michelle Moore have created a compelling story with two great characters."

Carol at RomFan reviews gives us 4/5 and says:
"The worldbuilding was very nicely executed, and the supporting characters had strong voices of their own."

And Tame at The Opening of the Chrysalis says:
"There was a perfect balance of intrigue, sensuality, innocence, carnality, new beginnings, old fears, and groundbreaking love that didn't overwhelm the senses, but engaged the reader totally. I can't wait to read more of their story, and more of the Ylendrian Empire!"
---
Guys, have I mentioned that I'm kind of blown away by the fact that people who aren't my Mom have read my book?

In other Ylendrian news, we finished the first major edits on The Slipstream Con, and have sent it off to make its way in the world.

Next up, we're working on Lake Effect, a paranormal mystery set in an old summer camp, and Peripheral Pineapple People, our psychic detectives... IN SPACE! book, which is another Ylendrian Empire novel. There may or may not have been some illicit plotting of a sequel to Slipstream, but I'll never tell.

November may be a bit of a breather for us, in terms of expanding the Empire. [profile] marigot_moore is thinking of keeping her NaNoWriMo tradition alive, and if she does, I am going to take the month and see where it'll get me with Skies Made of 1's and 0's, the steampunk story about angels, drugs, and magical binary that I have been "working on" for over a year. I can see the entire world, but it turns out that I'm kind of not good at writing without a partner.

Okay. I'm off to bed, before I turn into a pumpkin.

Things I am not doing.

Some Stories I am Not Writing:

1. The Psych fic where Shawn is adopted, and his biological parents are Yin and Yang. (Please note: this is my pet theory for the season 5 finale. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong, but I don't care.)
2. The White Collar fic where El isn't magically understanding, but wants the OT3 to succeed anyway. I want to see her wooed. She's a woman who deserves wooing.
3. The Peripheral People side story about the school shuttle pilot who flies Wens and Gavin home every weekend, a...

"The Balance of Silence" private release party.

I know at least half of you just added "in my pants" to that subject line, and that is why I love you.

Our first novel, The Balance of Silence, came out today! If you are friends with me anywhere else, I'm sure you already know that. I've been going on a bit, I think.

To celebrate, we had a private release party last night. Yes, it was in our kitchen. Yes, that's my Kindle. (It's also my wine.) And yes, then we sat down and finished the rest of the Sherlock episode we'd been watching. ...

In which I am a Virgo.

Today a friend brought over her Dyson for me to test drive around the house. I learned several things-

-Our current vacuum had a full bag, so it wasn't really a fair test
-There was a small cat living in our carpet
-There was a LARGE cat living in our hallway
-You only push ONE of the grey buttons to get the canister off to clean it out.
-I want a Dyson.

I am about to be 31, and my shiny new toy desire for my birthday is a vacuum cleaner. When did I grow up?

Ah, never. Excuse me while I go mo...

I go out writing, after midnight...

It's after midnight. After taking the writing day off, I'm officially allowed to say that I'm writing a mystery set in 1890's Paris, featuring Jean and Gabriel from my story in the Sindustry anthology, "Fin de Siecle". No idea how long it's going to be, yet, but I'm giving myself permission to write it until the writing is done, and worry about the rest later. (This one is just me. We'll see how much progress I make, between editing and other projects.)

Also in progress are:

Peripheral...

But what do I do NOW?

Well, holy crap.

84,686 words later, our accidentally-not-short space opera con-man caper is FINISHED.

I need a drink. And an editor.

Thoughts on writing m/m and queer fiction.

Here's what I will do:

Write honestly.
Write the characters I love, as human beings.
Tell the story that I meant to tell.
Do my best to make each voice authentic to the character I'm writing.

Here's what I won't do:

Use my sexuality as an excuse to write what I write.
Let someone else erase my sexuality or gender as a way to discredit what I write.
Stop telling the stories I want to tell because someone insists that I'm not queer enough.
