2012 NYC Teen Author Festival
Some kind folks have been asking me about my "book tour" for Fair Coin, which so far consists of as many readings and signings as I can arrange on the East Coast within reasonable reach of Philadelphia. I'm working on scheduling more where and when I can, within the constraints of distance, budget, and available vacation time from my day job. Check my Events page to see if I'll be coming to a venue near you, and I always appreciate recommendations for and to other stores, events...

altered fluid writing retreat 2012
For the last five(!) years, my writing group, Altered Fluid, has been going on group retreats to the wilds of New York and Pennsylvania for reflection, relaxation, shared creativity, and and lots of dedicated writing time. We usually have 8-13 writers in one big house for four or five days, which sounds like the perfect setup for a reality TV show. It is, but what happens on the Altered Fluid retreat stays there… we hope.
To my great sorrow, I missed last year's outing due to Major Life...

counting down to publication day
Pardon the radio silence around here lately. The quirks of publishing schedules often means that while you're promoting your first book, you're also working under a deadline on the second one. Lots of great things have been going on with Fair Coin in the last few weeks, but I had to shift gears and focus on revising Quantum Coin. (More on that later.) Fittingly, I turned in the manuscript to my editor on Leap Day–on schedule–and now I can start catching up on everything I've had to shove...

video power
I've been wanting to try "vlogging" (video blogging) for a while, and a new book is a great excuse. If you haven't seen it yet, here's my first attempt for the "Apocalypsies Now" YouTube Channel, in which the author introduces himself; pronounces the name of Fair Coin's protagonist, Ephraim Scott; and tells you why he publishes fiction under his initials.
I had fun making this, once I got over my stage fright. I'd like to do it more frequently on my own YouTube channel (maybe with a better...

bid time (return)
Thank you to everyone who entered the Goodreads giveaway to win an ARC of Fair Coin! There definitely will be other opportunities to get a copy. In fact, here's one now…
The Carl Brandon Society, an organization that helps build awareness of race and ethnicity in speculative fiction, is hosting another charity auction to get fans of color to a convention of their choice: Con or Bust. There are some delightful items and services up for auction, including a variety of autographed books and...

to know it is to like it
Yesterday we unveiled a shiny new Facebook page for Fair Coin! If you have a Facebook account, even if you don't use it much anymore, it would be wonderful if you would visit it and consider clicking "Like." It'll be the best way to stay notified of updates on the book and its sequel, Quantum Coin; get early access to some news and content; and connect to other readers who might like the same young adult fiction you do. If there's one thing I like as much as reading YA fiction, it's talking a...

there are many copies, but these are mine
As you can tell from the ongoing giveaway at Goodreads, I recently received some Advance Reading Copies (ARCs) of Fair Coin. These are bound paperbacks that resemble the final book but contain uncorrected text. Typos, even. (I hates them, Preciousss.) What are ARCs for? Essentially, they're for promoting your new book. My amazing publicist at Pyr has been sending them to book reviewers and bloggers, and the copies I received are earmarked for promotions and for booksellers, librarians, and...
