quantum goodness
It seems fitting that in the same week the Higgs bosonfinallymade its debut, the long-awaited advance reading copies of Quantum Coin also manifested! I was pretty sure I knew what was inside the box from Prometheus Books before I opened it, though my cat was less certain, and intensely curious. But it seems she was more interested in the Styrofoam peanuts than the books–also predictable.
You may recall that a little while ago I ran a giveaway here for the first Quantum CoinARC I received, so t...

jury duty
I’m happy to report that I have once again volunteered for SFWA’s Andre Norton Award committee. I’m honored to have been selected to participate with such a distinguished group of people, and I’m looking forward to reading a lot of great middle grade and young adult books this year and agonizing over what to recommend. Official announcement follows.
The 2012 Andre Norton Award committee has been chosen, and will begin accepting books for consideration. Any young adult prose or graphic novel fi...

my readercon schedule

source: captphilonline.com
Readercon is one of my favorite conventions, but important things like birthdays and weddings (most notably my own last summer) often conspire to keep me away. So I’m really glad I’ll be able to make it this year–attending a convention as a publishednovelist for the first time!
I’ll be there from early Friday, July 13 to early Sunday, July 15.I’m not scheduled for any panels, readings, or autograph sessions, but if you happen to want your copy of Fair Coin signed, fee...

reading tonight!!!
Just a reminder that I will be joining Jack O’ Connell at the KGB Fantastic Fictionreading tonight at the KGB Bar, 85 E. 4th Street, NYC. The readings start at 7:00 p.m., books will be for sale, and oh, did I mention that it’s my birthday? This is also likely to be my last (and thus, best!) reading for Fair Coin in NYC. It would be so wonderful to see you there. In fact, it’s my birthday wish.

in other publications
I have been so behind on everything lately, I haven’t yet blogged about these other publications that feature me or my work:

"Oh, my!"
I have a short essay in Hyphen – Asian America UnabridgedIssue 25:Generation, which is not only their tenth anniversary issue, but features an interview with George Takei. I am in a magazine with Mr. Sulu. How incredibly awesome is that? I was invited to be featured along with ten “next-gen Asian American writers” in a feature called “The Descendants.” We all wro...

teamTEENauthor DARE DAY
It’s DARE DAY! It’s DARE DAY!
If you don’t know what that is, don’t worry, I’m about to tell you. Even better, I’m about to show you.
I recently signed up with teamTEENauthor, which was founded by Julie Cross (the author of the fantastic book, Tempest) in order to connect authors for teens with their readers. Great idea, no? One of the requirements of membership is to undergo periodic public humiliation, just like my entire young adult life. It’s like Truth or Dare without the truth option.
For...

adopt a writer

Zombie Writer by http://aelur.deviantart.com/
In the summer of 2005, I joined a group of other writers of science fiction and fantasy in Seattle for a six-week boot camp for writers. One house. Six instructors. Eighteen students. Four bathrooms. It sounds like the setup for a reality showor a Chuck Palahniuk novel, but most people know it as the Clarion West Writers Workshop.
I’m not exaggerating in the slightest when I say that this experience changed my life. I went into it a promising but un...

water on mars
Like many, I was saddened to hear of Ray Bradbury’s death yesterday. Yes, he was 91 years old, which is a pretty decent run, and inasmuch as I don’t know anything about his personal life, he seemed to have led a full one. He certainly wrote a lot of great books that touched countless readers, influenced a lot of writers, and represented science fiction and fantasy at its very best–and will continue to do so for a long time to come, possibly for as long as print exists in some form and there a...

coming to a city near you! (if you’re near Boston, NYC, or Philly)
I tease some of my friends about them not promoting their upcoming events, and here I am waiting until the last minute to post about one of my own. But hopefully it isn’t too late! I will be visiting three of my favorite cities in June, and perhaps if you live near one of these venues, you will come visit me?

but wait! there’s more!
I’ve been pleased that several of the reviews I’ve seen of Fair Coinhave said things like, “I hope there’s a sequel,” or “the author had better write a sequel,” or “I wonder if there will be a sequel.” Naturally, I’m flattered; when I reach the end of a good book, I’m often sad that there isn’t any more of it to enjoy, but of course, some books (I’d say many books, or even, perhaps, most books) don’t need sequels. (*cough* TheHunger Games *cough*)
However, whether it needs it or not,Fair Coind...
