back to school

I really miss summer vacation. When I was a kid, summers meant weeks of uninterrupted reading time; every morning began with a trip to my local library, where I loaded up on seven or eight books. I lugged them home, settled into my favorite armchair, and devoured them all one after the other like literary Pringles. My school would have a summer reading challenge to see who could read the most books. It’s no surprise that the summer I read more than 100 books, at the start of the fourth grade,...

you never forget your first Dragon*Con (especially if you blog about it)

Miss Star Trek Universe 2011, Drexy the Tribble, wandered by while I was signing at the Pyr booth. In last year's competition, she performed a Star Trek cover of Lennon's "Imagine".

I’ve been to conventions before. My very first was a Star Trek Creation Convention during high school, and you can probably guess what that was like. In college, my best friend and roommate talked me into going to what I think was the first Xena: The Warrior Princessconvention ever, where I was in the minority beca...

enter the Dragon*Con

Right now I’m in beautiful Wisconsin for a novel writers’ workshop/retreat, where I’m workshopping the contemporary YA novel I didn’t quite finish revising in this summer’s Clarion West Write-a-thon. I’m getting a lot of terrific feedback and suggestions from amazing writers that will make it a much better, and probably very different book.

I’m disappointed I can’t go to Worldcon with the rest of these fine folks at the end of the week, but it’s for a very good reason: I will be at Dragon*Con...

an interview with Hal Johnson, author of Immortal Lycanthropes + book giveaway

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Hal Johnson for more than a dozen years. I believe I first met him in Hoboken, of all places, when the Columbia University Science Fiction Society (mine) started hanging out with the NYU Science Fiction Society (his). He’s one of the people I most looked forward to seeing at the parties of mutual friends, and he also sold me many a comic book at Midtown Comics in New York. It was always nice to run into him and chat for a little while, usually about whatever h...

The Olympics are over and this post is about a week late. No matter, we’re really just early for the next Olympics. That’s in, like, four years, right? Or something?

I have a horrible confession: I am not a fan of the Olympics. I don’t actively dislike them, but I am not the type...

on bullying

Every month, members of teamTEENauthorwrite ablog post for teens about a one-word topic. July’s topic is Bully . For links to more posts on this topic, scroll to the bottom.

I’ve been thinking about bullying and my own encounters with it for a while now, even before it came up as a topic for teamTEENauthor. Bullying has been in headlines all too often in the past few years, unfortunately due to some high profile stories about related suicides. The flip side of all this attention is that more pe...

ready for season 2!

"The Paper" by Feyd-rauthA (deviantART)

As of today, I have been married for longer than some of my favorite shows were on the air. That’s both happy-making and depressing, all at once. Mostly happy-making.

One year ago, many of our close friends and family gathered to make sure that Carrie and I actually went through with it after more than six years together. In this universe, and presumably all the parallel ones where I am not a complete loser, we did. There are a whole lot of lucky mes out...
