Contemplating Friendship

Cactus One

I am going on a two week vacation starting on Thursday. I’m looking forward to visiting with very close friends who I haven’t seen in forever! I’ve reached a pivotal birthday this year, and I decided life is too short not to seek out friends that feed our creative selves. Friends who are a joy to be with, who energize the people they associate with because they are warm, open and positive.

I’ve been very lucky to have met some very great people – and to forge some deep friendships. Soulmates in a way, and I’m talking about a connection that goes beyond the physical or sexual. Someone when you first meet and they just ‘get you’. Rare and special and worth nurturing.

When I write romance, I like my couple to be friends, even if they get off to a rocky start. Sure, the sex is always good, because it’s romance, right, but to be truly satisfying, there needs to be a deep connection and a synergy between the two lovers. I’m editing my Woodland Village series to republish the on Amazon. I’ve finished Blue Skye and Ryan’s Harbor and now working on John’s Match. John and Scott have a very rocky start to their relationship!

Here’s a bit of an excerpt when John does a good deed and brings home Scott’s drunk son. Scott doesn’t see it that way:

Scott slipped his hand under his son’s arms and lifted him to his feet, his glare pinning John. “What the fuck did you do to my son?”

John snapped, having enough of playing Good Samaritan. “Saved him from being road kill. I found him drunk, blocking my car door. I didn’t want to leave him stranded in a parking lot.” He wouldn’t mention what his son had been doing on his car.

“That’s not what it looks like to me.” Scott peeled back his son’s eyelid, practically growling. “He looks stoned. What shit did you give him?”

John stepped back. “I don’t take drugs or give them to unsuspecting men.” He bit back using the word “twink.” He hated that particular term. Nothing was wrong with young healthy men wanting a good time.

Even under the dim light, Scott’s eyes blazed. “My son isn’t some goddamn rent boy.”

“Jesus Christ, man. Aren’t you listening to a word I’m saying?”

Rob groaned, and his head wobbled on his father’s shoulder. “Don’t feel so good…” Then his head thumped down, and the guy passed out.

“I’m putting him to bed. You”—he pointed to John—“stay put.”

John bristled under the command. He should get the hell out of there, but the bastard was his neighbor. All he needed was all-out war between him and this asshole.

Cheers,

Viki

Mind Mapping For Writers

Sometimes when I’m stuck on a plot, I will mind map it. When Vina and I were trying to figure out who was after Vincent (Orbus Arcana), I used mind mapping to sort out the possibilities. The central theme was: Who is after Vince? My branches:

Who inherited the throne if Vince died

Political Differences

Murder Weapon

Who can Vince trust

Rival Families

I came up with ideas that I haven’t thought of before. It’s a great way to sort out your thoughts on scenes, plot points, characters even. You can outline concepts, details, character motives and conflicts. The list goes on.

There are mind mapping tools out there, but there’s nothing more fun than creating your own. These examples are from art journals but they give you an idea how much fun you can have when plotting out a scene!

Journal Page from Vibration Of Color™ Class – Matisse

Many of you know that my other creative field is art. Every so often I post on the subject when I find something I think is pretty cool.

I’m sharing a blog post from the Art Varsity website. They have taken 35 famous paintings and listed the color palettes used by the artists. This is a cool idea and a great way to find out what color combinations inspire you.

My favorite palettes were two paintings by Henri Matisse. What are yours?

Learning From A Writing Partner

I have four ebooks going right now. All four books are  are m/m fantasy and paranormal romances. I’m writing about vampires, Kresniks, angels and demons – oh, and throw in a God or two!

Two of the books I’m writing on my own, and two I’m writing with Vina.

Forbidden Bite (Book 4 of the Orbus Arcana series) should be the next book published, but as usual, we’re changing it up and so the first few chapters were set aside for a new idea. All of sudden an idea pops up and we go – Yeah, that’s too cool, let’s change it! Somehow we make it work between us. Vina has taught me that the small details of a relationship matters – the stroking of hair, the chin on the shoulder. The quiet moments shared by two people can be powerful. I hope that I’ve inspired her as well.

I feel that my individual writing has improved because of our working partnership. I have fun writing with another author – sharing ideas, brainstorming and then sharing in that wonderful feeling when we receive a great review for one of our books!

Cheers,

Viki

Science Fiction-An Evolving Genre

Science Fiction – An Evolving Genre

by Tom Olbert

Speaking as a writer who primarily works in science fiction, I am painfully aware that the genre holds extremely limited appeal for the public. The genre has dropped out of popularity. Most of the general public doesn’t take SF seriously. Kid stuff, they assume.

Maybe it started out that way, but the genre is evolving. The science fiction that has won current popularity in books and their big screen adaptations is the sub-genre we call post-apocalyptic science fiction (PASF). Stories that offer tortured young heroes and heroines struggling to find their purpose in dark, dystopian future worlds run by cold, duplicitous adults. And, if aimed and written properly, science fiction can be an excellent canvass for expressing such social themes and depicting characters who thrive in them, because it has no set limits or boundaries.

The writer creates the world that is needed to illustrate the point and to channel the development of the protagonist. The challenge is in making that world seem relevant to an audience that tends to be skeptical of the genre. To be taken seriously, SF has to escape the stigma of glitz and gadgetry and offer stories that are actually character-centered. The setting must frame and present the character, not just use the character to present itself.

One particularly dark and stinging PASF franchise is the CW’s “100” T.V. series, set in a post-war irradiated wilderness grown over the ruins of Washington D.C. Based on the Alloy books by Kass Morgan. A century after a nuclear war, the last survivors of humanity (or, so they think) live under harsh Draconian rule on an orbiting space colony beset by rapidly dwindling resources. They send a hundred of their incarcerated juvenile delinquents down to the surface to find out if it’s habitable. Turns out it is, but already inhabited, by two other groups of survivors. Warlike, savage tribes who live in the forests, and a technologically advanced but isolated society that’s lived inside a mountain bunker for the past 97 years.

Character development is strong and intense, weaving through dark themes of society-building, tribalism, leadership dynamic, and such timeless moral themes as justice, capital punishment, and war. It’s a raw, gritty look at human nature in its purest form, and it spares us nothing. Its strength is definitely in its lead characters. Most notably Clarke, the teenaged daughter of the space colony’s chief medical officer (a mother who betrayed Clarke’s father to execution at the hands of the regime, justifying it for the greater good.)

Thrust into circumstances beyond her control, Clarke reveals natural leadership ability and swiftly rises to power in her group. She soon has to face wrenching moral decisions that seem to echo the dark days of World War II. When the outwardly civilized, seemingly cordial mountain people start performing horrific Mengele-like experiments on the outsiders, draining their bone marrow in hopes of gaining their immunity to the radiation, Clarke must form an uneasy alliance with the savages to save her people. Clarke learns of an impending missile attack from the mountain through a spy she has on the inside, but decides not to warn her people about it, knowing it would tip off the enemy, robbing her side of the critical advantage. She must live with the guilt of her decision as dozens of her friends die a horrible fiery death while she gets herself to safety. A plot-point obviously alluding to Winston Churchill’s alleged similar decision at Coventry. When Clarke’s ally makes her own deal with the enemy, selling Clarke out to save her own people, Clarke must throw away the rule book to save her friends. She takes hostages and personally executes a prisoner just to make a point. When the enemy leader still won’t release her people, she makes the deliberate decision to commit genocide. Her hand pauses dramatically over the switch only a moment before she presses it, releasing deadly radiation into a bunker full of people, including innocent children and conscientious objectors who tried to help her people. The resulting nightmare scene of pleasant, family oriented cafeteria dining dissolving into excruciating death, bodies blistering from the radiation, women and children dying, conjures shades of Dresden, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

“I tried to be one of the good guys,” Clarke later tells her mother. “Maybe, there are no good guys, Clarke,” mom replies. It’s not that everyone is out for number one, you understand. They’re all just doing their best to save their own people. Which is, of course worse. The story is a dark mirror of the world in which we live, but the characters have more life than that. We care about them, and they bring the dark lessons to life for us because their pain and conflict and love and hate for each other are potent.

In my SF novella “Black Goddess,” I combined theoretical quantum physics with the dark yearnings of a morally conflicted Gulf War vet who has lost his faith and becomes obsessed with finding the core of darkness at the beginning of time. The story deals with the real-life agony of torture and what it does to the soul, and asks the timeless questions of whether primal evil truly exists, if life is anything but blind chance, and if there is a God. At its core is a simple yearning for love.

Quote:

“Beneath her black head scarf, her dark eyes stabbed through him with a flaming hatred. Then…nothing. Like a black abyss where a soul had been a micro-second before. A strange kind of peace. More than that, a oneness.

That look in her eyes. In his dad’s. It was the same as he’d seen in Lark’s memory…in the eyes of that kid in Uganda who’d held a knife to her throat. But, he hadn’t harmed her. Something had stopped him. When their eyes had met…something in her had pulled him back from the abyss.”

Could You? Would You? Cuckolding.

333x500Today SS Hampton, Sr joins me in introducing his new release – Sharing Rachel, a unique romance. He also explains Cuckolding which is the fascinating subject of this MMF romance. Be sure to read Stan’s bio, as interesting as any book! :)

Could You? Would You? (Post by Stan)

Hello.

So, just to break the ice, what do you think of Cuckolding? Some of you might respond, “What is cuckolding?” I’m glad you asked.

Very simply, the basic concept of Cuckolding is where the wife (Hotwife) has a boyfriend(s) (Bull) on the side—though in many cases she belongs to the Bull and caters to his needs—with the permission and encouragement of her husband (Cuckold Hubby), who remains faithful to her though he often loses sexual rights to his wife.

As with anything involving human beings, there are all sorts of variations, including the Hotwife and Bull belittling the watching Cuckold Hubby while they have sex, to the Cuckold Hubby orally priming both for each other and orally cleaning them up afterwards, to dressing feminine and servicing the Bull if the Hotwife is not available. And often the Cuckold Hubby is locked in a chastity device unless the Hotwife allows him a little freedom.

Cuckolding is not new, though it has usually been kept out of the public eye. After all, we are a very judgmental society. But, it has been around for some time. Geoffrey Chaucer (1343-1400) wrote of the idea in The Miller’s Tale for his book, Canterbury Tales, written late in the 14th century.

Anyway, I guess the first question is, “Why?”

Well, why not?

I mean, really. What interests or excites two or three people should generally be none of anyone’s business as long as they do not hurt others.

The Hotwife has a marriage, a supportive husband, and a horny Bull(s) on the side. Once again she gets to experience the freedom, the excitement of flirting, of reliving a first date, and enjoying first sex with a new man. As for the husband, many have the excitement and satisfaction of the wife having the freedom to explore her sexuality and enjoying herself, though she always (well, most of the time) chooses to return to her husband.

There may also be elements of voyeurism, the excitement of indulging in a taboo, female empowerment and sexual fulfillment, and even health issues present. Remember Lady Chatterley’s Lover, D. H. Lawrence, 1928?

Certainly for such a marriage to be successful, honest communication is a must, along with mutual trust, and clearly established boundaries. A husband and wife who begin such an activity where only one is actually interested, where jealousy is an issue, or where the marriage is shaky to begin with, may be in for a rude awakening.

So, in the early 21st century, is monogamy going out of style? I doubt it. Certainly cuckolding has received a lot of press in recent years. Google “Hotwife” or “Cuckold Marriage” or “Bull and Cuckold Couples” and you may be surprised by the amount of blogs and websites that show up, including on Reddit and Tumblr. I suspect couples are only being more open about it, especially due to the Internet; it does make it much easier for “birds of a feather to flock together.”

The next time you and your wife are having drinks at a bar, especially a bar where there is dancing—maybe you’re not a dancer—and you notice men eyeing her and maybe she’s smiling in return, take a deep breath and ask, “So, what are you thinking?”

You might be surprised.

You might be pleasantly surprised.

The next questions that you ask—of yourself—could be, “Could you? Would you?”

Why not?

After all, why should exciting, lusty adventures be reserved for the rich and famous?

Have fun!

Sharing Rachel Blurb and Excerpt:

Sometimes people choose to live life to the fullest…

BLURB: Burt and Rachel Markham are ordinary small business owners of a feed & seed store in a small Kansas farming and ranching community. Many years before, as young university graduates eagerly anticipating exciting overseas employment, a lifetime in Kansas was the furthest thing from their minds, particularly Rachel who was raised overseas and dreamed of going back. By July 2013 their twin 18-year old daughters, having graduated high school several months before, go east to attend a university. Burt and Rachel settle into their new life of an empty house and a predictable and unchanging routine that threatens to stretch far into the future. One summer evening Burt has an idea—but will Rachel accept the idea? If she does, will the idea add new excitement to their marriage, or destroy it?

EXCERPT:

Rachel was dressed in her best Sunday-go-to-meetin’ clothes complete with a spring hat, the front brim of which angled downward as if to hide her face.

After all, could anyone really look at her face and eyes—the eyes being the window to the soul—and know what she and Burt were going to do after church? She was still surprised at his question to her. More, she remained surprised at her own reaction.

That moment on the porch she felt a sudden thrill at the idea of taking another man, a stranger, as a bull, or even as a simple one-night stand if things didn’t work out. Everything she had been taught about the sanctity of marriage, of a husband and wife belonging only to each other, flew out the proverbial window. The idea of Burt watching her and a stranger fucking, and her idea of him photographing them, was an incredible turn on for her, and she wasn’t sure why. Perhaps at heart she was an exhibitionist?

Her marriage to Burt was a good marriage, though a little rocky at first when she found herself settling into a farmhouse on the Kansas prairie rather than living in Europe. She was a good wife and a good mother. Her mother was proud of her, and her mother-in-law loved her. Their neighbors and customers respected and liked her, as did the school staff and students, and the church leadership and congregation. She was the epitome of respectability in a small community, and now she was preparing to risk everything. In a way that too was exciting.

Or was she risking her marriage? Burt suggested the idea and she had his support—so far. Their marriage was stable and there were no strains that could break it up. Besides, fucking and lovemaking were two very different things. Why couldn’t she have a horny bull and a loving husband?

Rachel sighed and with some difficulty refocused on the service.

Bible study had gone well though she found it a little hard to focus, and the church service seemed to last longer than usual. She knew it was because of her desire to go home and get to work finding a sex site on which to post an advertisement for a bull, and everything associated with it. She sighed again, realizing she couldn’t focus on the service.

She snuck a peek at the surrounding men and women as the congregation rose to sing the final hymn and ushers passed long handled collection plates along the pews. How many of the congregation were as kinky as she and Burt were planning to be? Outwardly they were hard working, no-nonsense farmers and ranchers. But inwardly? What secrets did they harbor about their past and present, and maybe future?

Rachel looked at her husband who stood with hymn book in hand, singing unashamedly though he couldn’t carry a note. She studied his cheeks, the angle of his nose and his chin—the strong, stubborn physical that she knew so well after twenty one years of marriage.

Her husband would help her choose a bull…

A future goal is to study for a degree in archaeology—hopefully to someday work in and photograph underwater archaeology (and also learning to paint). He is currently enrolled as an art student at University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

After 14 years of brown desert in the Southwest and overseas, he misses the Rocky Mountains, yellow aspens in the fall, running rivers, and a warm fireplace during snowy winters.

As of April 2014, after being in a 2-year Veterans Administration program for Homeless Veterans, Hampton is officially no longer a homeless Iraq War veteran.
