When I was child growing up on the Texas prairie, I dreamed about traveling and seeing the world. I got as far away from home as Zhou Zhi, China, and Mildura, Australia. I took with me a notebook to write and a sketchpad to draw. I alternate between writing and painting. I've worked as a newspaper reporter,ESL teacher, and university reference librarian. Books have always been a very important part of my life both as a reader and as a writer. I'm the author of 8 nonfiction books. My mystery-suspense novel, Desert Jade, is the first in the Letty Valdez mystery series and appeared in November 2017. The next Letty Valdez mystery, Dragon's Revenge appears in late 2018. http://www.cjshane.com/

As many of you know, my Letty Valdez Mysteries always/will always feature an animal - either a dog or a cat (so far). Desert Jade featured Millie, and Dragon's Revenge, coming later this month, introduces you to Teddy the Sniffer Dog. Here I am writing about this on the Pens, Paws, and Claws blog. Take a look and see a photo of Sunday the Rescue Dog who is the inspiration for Millie.

C.J.’s Recent Updates

Exit Strategy by Martha Wells
"Another excellent entry in the Murderbot Diaries. This one was a bit less sassy, a bit darker than the previous stories. It continues the exploration of what it means to be human that has been a feature of the entire series. I love that we see the..." Read more of this review »

I had to make sure to keep breathing as I flew through this explosive story! Will Slater is such a good, moral person..he cannot stop himself from becoming involved when he sees a terrible injustice being done..." Read more of this review »
C.J. Shane and 2 other people liked T. Renee's review of Intentions:
Intentions by Oscar Wilde
"The Decay of Lying is absolutely the most brilliant thing I've ever read. It's witty and relevant and insightful. When refering someone to a classic, it's number one on my list of absolute must reads."
Depth of Winter by Craig Johnson
"This Craig Johnson novel was a bit different as it was more of an adventure/thriller than a mystery, per se.
Sheriff Longmire is in Mexico seeking the knife bandit who has kidnapped his daughter. Violence and explosions ensue.
I liked it but misse..." Read more of this review »

Mary Oliver
“Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.”
Mary Oliver

T.S. Eliot
“If the lost word is lost, if the spent word is spent
If the unheard, unspoken
Word is unspoken, unheard;
Still is the spoken word, the Word unheard,
The Word without a word, the Word within
The world and for the world;
And the light shone in the darkness and
Against the Word the unstilled world still whirled
About the center of the silent Word.

Oh my people, what have I done unto thee.

Where shall the word be found, where shall the word
Resound? Not here, there is not enough silence”
T.S. Eliot

Leonard Cohen
“There is a crack in everything. that's how the light gets in.”
Leonard Cohen

Voltaire
“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”
Voltaire, Questions sur les Miracles à M. Claparede, Professeur de Théologie à Genève, par un Proposant: Ou Extrait de Diverses Lettres de M. de Voltaire
