Chesapeake Romance Writers’ Conference 2016 by Jenna Jaxon
My local RWA chapter, Chesapeake Romance Writers, is hosting what has become our annual conference on March 5, 2016 this year, in Williamsburg, VA and I wanted to invite everyone, both writers and readers, to come out, meet some of our celebrated authors, enjoy our workshops, and have some fun into the bargain.
Readers, we have best-selling author Cathy Maxwell as our morning speaker. Her historical romances have hit most best-sellers lists. And if that wasn’t enough, our own chapter member, best-selling author of contemporary romance, Felicia Mason, will lead the afternoon workshop. Both these ladies are dynamic speakers, something you will not want to miss.
We will also have a book sales nook, where many of our local authors will be selling and signing books.
Writers, in addition to the workshops by industry experts, we will be having pitches taken on site by acquiring editors and agents. After lunch, this panel will also critique the first pages submitted by registered conference participants.
The day will be rounded out by presentations to the winners of our chapter’s annual writing contest, The Rudy.
So if you are live the Williamsburg, Central Virginia area or within driving distance, you should come down for a fabulous day devoted to writers and writing.
For more information or to register, please click this link here to go to our chapter’s conference webpage.
Hope to see you there!

I Have Signed A New Book Contract
I am ecstatic to announce that I have signed a contract with Soul Mate Publishing for Book 2 in the Arnhem Knights of New York series. This book is about King Max’s daughter Noblesse. In the first book, readers meet her as Max’s assistant and an Arnhem Knight.
In Book 2, Noblesse is revealed as the CEO when Max is not around. The reader discovers the heartbreak of her life that continues to hurt her to this day, and how close she is to her vampire family. For over 200 years, Noblesse has searched for what happened to her mother who disappeared just prior to the French Revolution. In her entire life both human and vampire, Noblesse has never fallen in love. Two men want her and claim to be her lifemate. They are both telling a lie. One of them truly loves her.
What do I love about this book? I love the sense of family that surrounds Noblesse. She lets her hair down and the reader gets a more intimate view of her life. The love story is very sexy and fun and daring. You find out just how brave a person can be when they love someone. It’s a book of two cities, New York and Paris.
What happens now that I’ve signed the contract? My publishers has already sent me edits, so I’m off to work.
For those that haven’t read the first book, Vampire King of New York, they may want to. It’s available at Amazon in Kindle and Print, Barnes and Noble in Nook and Print and also at Kobo. It’s also in most of the Amazon stores around the world.

Location, location, location by Stacy Hoff
The old adage in real estate is well known: the best way to select property is by considering three things – location, location, location. Does this principle hold true for writers? In order to find the perfect location for my stories I do a heck of a lot of research. Perhaps I’m no different than a home buyer. After all, the places I pick are where my characters have to live.
For the first story I ever did, DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES, I picked the most dangerous, and steamy, place I could think of. For me, Florida’s Everglades was the obvious choice. I had traveled there with my parents as a young teen and the memories stuck with me. Everything from the oppressive heat, to the airboat ride, to the thrill of seeing alligators, stayed fresh in my mind even thirty years later. Since I was new to writing novels when I wrote EVERGLADES, I felt comfortable picking a setting I was familiar with.
The second story I did, LAWFULLY YOURS, takes place in Hartford, Connecticut. Living in New England for the past two decades as I have, I know Hartford quite well. Setting the scenes of this book right in the heart of downtown was as comfortable and easy for me as sitting in my well-worn couch.
It was time for me to kick my locations up a notch. To challenge myself as a writer. Not because I hate myself, but because there are limits to my life travels. I have a full time job, a hard working husband, two young boys, and a limited wallet. With these limitations, I do my best to accomplish “live-action research.” I had recently posted on this blog about my travels to both the Belmont and Saratoga racetracks for a recently finished romance manuscript I set in the world of thoroughbred horseracing. But can I always accomplish the goal of traveling to every place I want to write about? No.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, however, depending on the location I’ve chosen to write about. Take, for instance, my newest release, the sequel to my EVERGLADES story, DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC.
When I decided to write a sequel, I wanted a place that was equally dangerous and unique as the Everglades. A real place, but one so remote and hard to get to, most people would never get there. So I picked Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska. It is the most Northern US park, and the only one in the Arctic Circle. It is accessible only by specially chartered planes. (Although there is another alternative, assuming anybody wants to risk their life by crossing a raging river after hiking a few miles from the nearest highway.)
Researching Gates of the Arctic National park wasn’t easy. Turns out, the more obscure the location, the more difficult it is to find information. Undaunted, I ferret out enough accurate facts to paint a picture as vividly as if I had personally traveled there. It took time. It was not within my comfort zone. But I think the results were worth it.
What’s the most dramatic location you wish you could visit?
The pictures above are of Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, courtesy of the US government. Fun fact from the US Park’s Department website: The weather can drop below freezing and snow during any month—even in July—in Gates of the Arctic!

Book Blurb for DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC
Ana Davis has been given the promotion of the century—from secretary to television producer. But the new job is not without its problems. The network will do anything for ratings. The executives reveal Ana’s newest show, one she’s forced to star in herself. She’ll have to survive in the Arctic Circle for twelve days. If she wins, she’ll get the prize money she desperately needs. But the stakes are high, she could lose her very life. Good thing she’s been paired up with expert survivalist William “Redd” Redding—a mysterious, solitary and very sexy man. Too bad she thinks he doesn’t even want to talk to her.
William “Redd” Redding is a former Special Ops Marine in need of cash to help a cause near and dear to his heart. What he’s not in need of, however, is Ana Davis—his clueless but captivating partner. It’s up to Redd to have the two of them survive in the most dangerous, hostile environment of all. But worse than snowstorms, predators, and a scarcity of food is a real danger—Ana. Resisting her, when he wants her more than anything, is his hardest challenge yet. How does he go about protecting her when his biggest goal is to protect his heart?
And if your curious as to the book 1:
Book Blurb for DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES
Stephanie Lang’s successful career as a television producer can’t give her everything she wants out of life. Her personal goals of writing a romance novel and finding true love languish. Emotionally scarred by her fiancé’s affair with her cousin, she doesn’t have the confidence to go after either goal again. At least she has professional confidence to fall back on—she is ready to produce the company’s next hit show. But when her boss reveals what the show is about, a survival documentary starring a sexy, modern version of Crocodile Dundee, Stephanie’s life is turned upside down.
Colin Brandt, billed as “The Evergladiator,” will tackle Florida’s Everglades with nothing more than his bare hands and a knife. Stephanie, instantly attracted to handsome, rugged, enigmatic Colin, worries he will not survive his twelve-day odyssey. If he does, he’ll win a million dollars. If he fails, his beloved family’s farm will go into foreclosure. Can Colin conquer the Everglades? And can he conquer her heart?

Hello From the Other Side by Heather Novak
Hear me out, Nights of Passion Readers, I’m going out of the box today.
I picked up the Life and Death, Twilight Reimagined audiobook from the library. This post isn’t really about the book, but about my shock at familiar characters in unfamiliar gender roles.
(May contain spoilers ahead)
Listen, I have no shame. I loved Twilight. But, it’s been ten years. I’m no longer sitting in the bar on my 21st birthday with a martini in one hand and Twilight hardcover in the other. Now, I’m listening to the audiobook on my library app looking up mortgage rates and thinking about filing taxes. It’s a different life now.
My first impressions: I love that immediately we’re hit with a female surgeon and several physically strong female vampires (the Cullen family), along with another female (human) who likes to fix cars. The males are in more emotional roles, like our hero, Beau (who replaced Bella).
I caught myself being annoyed that Beau was actually showing emotion. (Uncool, Heather. Uncool.)
For example: There’s a scene where Beau isn’t hungry during lunch because he’s upset that Edith (heroine) wasn’t in school that day. I found myself super annoyed at Beau’s whiny behavior. But when I read about a female doing the same thing (which millions of us did), I identified with her and didn’t think twice about it.
So why is it I can identify with a female character whose emotion affects her appetite, but not a male character? While I’m only guessing, I bet it goes hand in hand with the “guys don’t feel emotion strongly” lie that I’ve heard my entire life. -10 points for me.
Listening to this book was an incredibly eye opening. Was it perfect? No. Did it slap me upside the head? Yes, yes it did.
As a romance writer and reader, I found myself shocked at my own reactions to strong females and emotive males. Even though I sit here and preach that I want to write male characters who can show emotion and female characters who aren’t in traditional roles or have traditional hobbies, do I do it? Do I dare do it to this extent?
This is a risk that Stephanie Meyer could afford to take. After all, even if she doesn’t make another cent from this franchise, she can still feed her family and keep a roof over their heads. But what about the rest of us?
What happens when we write a book that we can’t sell because it’s too different?
Yet, the fact that I just wrote the above sentence is the reason we need to write and read books that break the gender roles, that break through the stereotypes. We need to take the risk.
Let’s write outside the box and see what happens.

Should vs. Want
A few blogs back, I wrote about understanding the “why” behind what we do and how it is important to identify with this why. I’m bringing this back up today as we are about to wrap up January and all around me I hear, “I should go to the gym, I should network, I should eat salad, etc.” So… why isn’t it happening?
Now don’t get me wrong, I know these things aren’t easy to do and I’m not saying I’ve got it all figured out (by any means) but I will suggest something to try—want those things. Not too long ago, I was in the same place… I should eat healthy, I should go to the gym. I changed my mind and decided I was going to eat healthy if I wanted to or go to the gym if I wanted to. If I didn’t, there was no pressure. Guess what? Of course I’ve been eating healthier and going to the gym more often… go figures.
So here is my theory and I’m sure there is some sort of proven psychology behind all this so please bear with me if I’m repeating something you’re already aware of. I personally have too much to do and too many people to be (good mom, boss, wife, employee, daughter in law, daughter, etc.) and quite frankly, the pressure gets overwhelming at times. I would bet I’m not alone. So to take a different approach, I decided I was going to do what I wanted, when I wanted. It made me realize that I want to be healthier, I want to feel fit and good, I want to learn and excel in my job and somehow I had lost track of all these wants as I’ve been swallowed by all the “shoulds” in my life.
What about you? Sure you should work out today or eat an apple instead of a snickers bar but what do you want to do? If your end game is that you want to feel great and be fit, working out and more apples may outweigh snickers (not to say you can’t ever eat a candy bar). That is where the “why” comes in. We need to understand the “why” as it connects us to the bigger picture. If someone asked us if we wanted to gain 5 pounds of fat, we’d probably say “no” but it isn’t always easy to equate this big picture with a few weeks/months of junk food and no exercise.
Lesson of the day? Do what you want, not what you should AND truly understand WHAT it is that you want (the “why”). Happy writing this week!

Getting Ready for Romancing the Capital 2016! by Mandy Rosko
I’m curious to know how many of you have ever been to a readers convention before? It seems like convention season is almost here and I’m curious. The only ones I’ve ever been to are the Romantic Times Convention (which is awesome) and then there’s the Romancing the Capital convention which is where I live in Ottawa.
Guess which one I’ll be signing books at and giving away these bad boys?
I can’t wait. The design looks so good, and I’m going to fill the bottles with buttons and candies, and maybe wrap them in ribbon. It depends on how I’m feeling at the time ;)
There’s going to be a few more of these than readers at the convention, some authors will be giving them away in their blogs, but those extras are *super* limited. Lol.
Eve Langlais, the lady hosting the site saved me spectacularly when she reminded me to put my website on them. I would’ve totally forgotten to do that if it wasn’t for her :S
Anyway, I figured for the extra one I’m getting, I’ll hand it out to someone on my Newsletter list before the event itself (Which is in May)
I absolutely cannot wait for these to come in. They’ll probably take up a ton of room in my small apartment, but I don’t care :D I just want to see them in real life
Cheers!

A Snow-Covered Paranormal-Scope
The snow came, and I shoveled. For those that still have the snow coming, please, be safe.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
The week for:
Aries:
Werewolves love to play in the snow. Put aside some playtime for yourself.
Taurus:
Shapeshifters are not as keen on romping in the snow and being wet afterward. New boots may be on your shopping list.
Gemini:
Pixies dance on snowflakes. You make the best of changes because you’re adaptable. This fine quality will serve you this week.
Cancer:
Vampires love dark snowy nights under streetlights. A mystery will be revealed to you.
Leo:
Even if the world is frozen you are not. Be like the dragon and bring together those you enjoy for a party.
Virgo:
Elves use the snowy months to record their travels. Organize a photo album or write a journal about your adventures.
Libra:
Like a snowstorm there are often surprises. Faeries love surprises and know they come in all shapes and sizes.
Scorpio:
Mermaids are hypnotized by the snow. They like to float on the water and let it fall on them. They find it soothing and refreshing. Time for you to restore. Plan a spa day or do something relaxing.
Sagittarius:
Gnomes laugh at the snow. At soon as it stops, they are packing their bags to travel again. It’s time to plan a trip.
Capricorn:
To goblins, snow is money. The money to clear it and the cost of any possible damage. Re-evaluate your budget this week. It’s not the time to splurge.
Aquarius:
Demons take cover from the snow. They don’t like all that purity. Once the storm clears, a new opportunity will present itself.
Pisces:
Werebears love to cuddle in the cave when the snow flies. Keep those you love close. Enjoy this time.

The Devil’s in the Details by Jenna Jaxon
I find myself at the grocery checkout quite often these days. Lines are long and I have time to idly “check out” the groceries of the person in front of me. I’m not sure if this is my own strange idiosyncrasy or if many people do this, but I do look at what people are buying and sort of ponder it.
I look first at what they’re buying. What’s in your cart is quite often a reflection of the purchaser. Diapers, baby food, baby wipes, of course, denote a new parent. Large purchases of beer or wine, chips and dip, and chicken wings says “Super Bowl Party!” in January (although you have to buy the wings ahead of time—I guarantee there will be no wings available come Super Bowl Sunday). Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and organic products say health conscious shopper.
What’s almost as fun to check out is what products shoppers buy with a brand name and what they will buy with a store brand. I’ve seen people with every canned good a store brand, yet they have Charmin Bath Tissue. Or Green Giant canned vegetables, Campbell’s soups, Ocean Spray Cranberry juice, and store brand ginger ale. These are the shoppers I can be creative about, because I have no clue why they favor brand name on some items and not another.
I myself have only a few quirks when it comes to brand name vs. store brand. I will buy almost everything in generic that I can. Two exceptions come readily to mind: I will only buy Tetley British Blend for my hot tea and I will only buy Dukes Mayonnaise. The Tetley I have become so used to that nothing else (save Twinings) tastes right and Dukes Mayo is what I’ve used since I was a child. I’ve used other brands of mayonnaise, including a store brand one time when I was desperate, however, I will now forgo other groceries just to pay a little more for Dukes.
What these observations all boil down to are details. Details that I can put into my writing, at least when I’m writing contemporaries. Specifics draw the reader more deeply into a character. They can perhaps make a connection (maybe they use Charmin and thus understand immediately why that character chooses that TP) and therefore identify with the character and thus want to stay with the story to find out what happens to them.
Good writers are always observant of human nature. What people do, where they shop, what they buy, where they eat lunch and what they eat, can all be used at some point in a writer’s career. Observe the everyday details and they will help bring life to your characters.

What To Do When Your Computer Acts Wacky and A Snowstorm is Coming
What do you do when your computer acts wacky? It depends on the computer. Today I was on my laptop for about 6 hours straight. Then I went off for dinner. When I came back it was not right. A snowstorm is approaching and I wondered if there was something going on with some sites because of the weather. I’ve seen that in the past.
I ran a virus scan and a malware scan. Nothing showed up.
I found that it wasn’t loading completely anything on the internet. So now what?
I will let the laptop rest and see what is up tomorrow.
It may also be time to re-evaluate what is on the computer and start storing stuff again or eliminating things I no longer need.
But if you have a ton of work like I do, what do you do? I’m writing to you on the little Acer Aspire One I have. It’s basic and not fancy but I’m here and it’s rescued me on several occasions. Having a back up computer is always a good idea.
So is stocking up on food, water, and emergency supplies including everything needed for children and pets when a snowstorm is coming. Don’t forget batteries, flashlights, an emergency radio, and a plan if you have a power outage and have to leave after the storm for a hotel. I gassed up my car too. I will be charging my cell phone overnight.
All the best to all of you out there in the storm. Stay safe.

Writing A Sequel by the Seat of Your Pants by Stacy Hoff
I can admit it – I am a “pantser” (someone who does not plot out a book, preferring instead to write by the “seat of their pants”). Maybe because of my “lawyer” day job I simply cannot write fiction by thinking as linearly as I do when I write contracts. Forcing my brain to think in the same outline style works against my creativity. Since I’m self-aware enough to realize this quirk, I wrote my first book, DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES, by simply sitting down at computer and banging away at the keyboard. I shoved in every bit of humor and crazy drama that sprang from my fingertips. The book came out as a steamy contemporary romance with a heavy amount of action and adventure. Who knew?
My “pantsy-self” did not think about a sequel at the time. Nope, I plunged in with a single tale to tell. Who ever thought my first book, or any of my books, would get published? Not me, that’s for sure. I save my ego for my day-job.
Imagine my surprise when I found out a publisher actually wanted to put my words into print. And bigger surprise when I saw not only my first book, but the one that followed (LAWFULLY YOURS) actually sell. “My God,” I said to myself, “I actually have readers! Maybe I should think about a sequel. Would they enjoy reading one? Would I enjoy writing one?”
Loving a challenge (because I’m demented) I decided to do a follow-up to my first book after all. I set the stage in a place equaling unnerving as the Everglades—Alaska’s Yukon. Even with all the research this new remote place required, choosing the setting was the easy part. The true task was picking up a story line that was already established, and purportedly wrapped up.
Romance readers will know that once the HEA (happily ever after) has been established, the storyline for the hero and heroine is done. This meant I either had to: (1) thrust a secondary character into the limelight; or, (2) create a bunch of brand new characters. After much mulling, I decided to go fifty-fifty. I had heard so much positive feedback on Ana, the secretary to Stephanie (my first heroine) that Ana was my choice. Ana now had to survive out in the wilds in her own story, just as Stephanie had. All that remained was coming up with a new character to play the hero, and a way to integrate the first story without repeating any of it.
After a few months of more keyboard banging, DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC was born. I feel a sense of victory here. Not just for me, but for all “pants-kind.” Who needs a plot when we’ve got the power of spontaneous creativity?
Do you “pants” or plot? What do you think the advantage is?
