Memorial Day – May 30, 2016

Soldiers National Monument at the center of Gettysburg National Cemetery.
Memorial Day started out as Decoration Day in 1868 to honor the Union military dead of the Civil War in the United States of America. The southern United States actually had a different day to honor their military dead and theirs was the first Memorial Day.
Over the years the days merged and Decoration Day became Memorial Day, a national holiday on the last Monday in May. On that day we honor those who have died in military service to the country. Years ago it started out by putting flowers on graves and that practice continues today in addition to adding flags.
It’s a time of reflection. Great sacrifices were made to preserve our liberty. We would not be what we are today without them.

A Day of Remembrance: Memorial Day 2016
Memorial Day began after the Civil War as a specific day on which to remember those men who died on the Union side during the conflict. After World War II the day was changed to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in the service of the United States in any war.
The day is special in my family because my uncle, John Thomas Jackson was killed in Italy during World War II. He and his brothers served in almost all branches of the service. From the stories in our family John, also called “Peepsi,” was something of a daredevil. He was stationed in Italy and volunteered to go on a scouting mission outside of Salerno and was killed by a sniper. One of my cousins is named for him and my father informed me numerous times that I would had been named after him had I been a boy.
I’m sure if you have a member of your family who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom, you’ll also be remembering them this Memorial Day.

Memorial Day Weekend
I come from a military family. My dad served in the Navy for 20 years. My uncle served in the Army during World War II. For me, Memorial Day and the days that surround it are a time of reflection. A time to thank the men and women in the United States Armed Forces for protecting us and our liberty everyday. It’s also a time to remember those that served and died for us.
Thank you!

Vacation… Here I come!
I’m burnt out, but honestly that seems to be the theme lately. Do more with less. Stretch, stretch, stretch. I’m studying and working and being a mom and studying and working and… you get the gist. In a way, it is interesting to see how focused one can become when they are so busy, but at the same time, you know that there is a timeline, a ticking clock so to speak on your happy productive mode.
So… I’ve planned an impromptu vacation. Is it the best time to take one? No, certainly not (I say this in a British accent as I steal from one of the common lines of one of my son’s bed time books), but then when is it? We are always busy and if we aren’t we create things for ourselves to do because we fell guilty we aren’t doing enough. I’m sure some therapist somewhere is nodding their head and has an explanation for this, but to me, it seems perfectly illogical.
I’ve written blogs before about being busy, needing to slow down, stopping to smell the flowers but do we (or I do it)? No, certainly not. I’m not sure slowing down is in our vocabulary. We need to be productive, we need to do, do, do. Why? The work will be there tomorrow, and the day after and the day after. And next thing we know, our lives have gone by and what do we have to say for ourselves. What are you proud of? Any of those busy bee accomplishments you’ve made? For some of us, I’d say yes but a lot of what we dedicate our time to is not always necessary.
My advice for this week? Be spontaneous, plan a vacation, take some time for you. Happy writing this week!

Deadlines! by Mandy Rosko
They creep up on you.
If you’re an artist or any sort of creator, I’d love to know what you do with your deadlines. To you responsibly stick with them and plan for them? Or are you like me and you push them back as far as possible until you’re kicking yourself by the end of the month?
Yeah, I did that to myself again. Writing for a publisher basically means that I need to hand in at least 100K words a month to be happy, and I can do it, I’ve done it and more plenty of times over, but I think it’s time I started slowing down on the side projects if I’m going to get any proper sleep.
And if I want to make time for those painting classes I’ve been desperately wanting

Writer’s Retreat 2016 by Jenna Jaxon
For the past week I’ve been on retreat with my local RWA chapter, Chesapeake Romance Writers. This year, for the first time, we rented a house at the Outer Banks, up in Corolla, and some of us—including yours truly—got to spend an entire week.

Living Room
The house was big, but on a floor-plan that put the kitchen and most writing spaces on the top floor.

Pool and Deck
There were three floors, the basement with a pool, hot tub, and pool table, the main bedroom floor, and then the upper floor with kitchen and two dining areas, plus decks on each floor and off some of the bedrooms.
There was even a Crow’s Nest.

The Crow’s Nest

View From the Crow’s Nest
The main focus, as always, is writing.
My main goal was to finish a Regency novella for inclusion in an upcoming boxed set to be released in July. I am happy to say that diligence has paid off and the first draft (and half the second) have been completed while I was down here.

My Main Writing Nook
My total counts as of the end of the conference were 103 pages: 63 typed, 40 hand written, including 28,568 words. The final count should be somewhere around 30K, although that will certainly vary as I know the final two chapters will need extensive revisions. Still, I cn say with satisfaction that I completed the first draft of Heart of Delight during my Writer’s Retreat.
We are already planning Writer’s Retreat 2017, so if anyone is interested and live near Virginia, come on down!
