Happy Father’s Day! Constructing the Perfect Father’s Day Card by Jenna Jaxon

15-Amazing-Cards-For-Dad-Happy-Fathers-Day-2013-14-300x225

First let me wish all fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, new fathers, and anyone who has been like a father a very Happy Father’s Day!

Most of my readers, however, will be the daughters, granddaughters, wives and other female relatives who are honoring them today as well. Father’s Day cards are one of our most popular and thoughtful gifts and as I was looking on the internet, I found some excellent suggestions for Father’s Day messages in a post by Keely Chace, from the writers of Hallmark cards. So below are some of the recommendations for what to write in that all important card.

If the card is for your father, “What makes your dad the best? Well, he’s your dad, for starters, and that all by itself is pretty special.” So the sentiments should be foremost from the heart. They can range from a simple, “Dad, you’re the greatest” to something more personal, such as “Happy Father’s Day to the dad who struck fear into every dance, homecoming, and prom date I ever had and he still treats me like a princess.”

For a message from more than one person—siblings, partners, spouses, family—you can choose from such sentiments as “So glad we all share such fun times together, Daddy” and “With you, Dad, Father’s Day means lots of tasty grilled things and lots for our family to celebrate!”

Grandfathers, whether called Grandpa, Papa, Big Daddy, or granddad, love to be remembered as well. Whether it’s a simple, “Happy Father’s Day to the best grandpa in the world!” or a bit bigger expression, such as, “I hope I can create as many good memories for my grandchildren as you have given me.”

If your relationship is strained or not the best, do not despair. As long as you are honest in your feelings, you can still honor father, grandfather, or step-father with a simple and sincere greeting.

For your husband or partner, Hallmark says, “respect and gratitude are key messages to convey in your card for the man you love on Father’s Day. Whether the two of you are in the thick of diapers and carpools or you’re in a position to look back and laugh together, he will love reading that you have noticed and appreciated the good things he’s done as a dad.” You can make it short and sweet, “I love our family, and I love you,” or the more flowery “Happy Father’s Day to the man of my heart, the father of our children, the love of my life.”

Whatever your relationship, have a happy and safe day honoring all Dads everywhere.

What is Your Favorite Romance Book?

Recently I was interviewed and asked what my favorite romance novel was? That was not an easy question to answer.  It keeps changing.

I started out loving Romeo and Juliet. Then I adored Wuthering Heights. WHI became fascinated by Green Mansions. Then I realized they all had unhappy endings. I don’t count the hero and heroine being together in death as a happy ending.

As I got older, my needs in a romance novel changed and became more demanding. I’m not satisfied with girl meets boy, they have a problem, and somehow work it out before getting back together. I was intrigued early on by fantasy, science fiction, and horror. It’s no wonder I became a paranormal romance/vampire romance author. It was a natural evolution.

So what strikes my fancy now? There still isn’t a favorite. I haven’t met that one book that does it all but a few have delighted me as I read my way in search of “the One.”

I tend to read everything by certain authors. Bianca D’Arc is on and I particularly love One & Only, an One and Onlyold novella of hers that keeps getting republished.  Of course, it’s about vampires. She also writes about a variety of supernaturals. I love how this just naturally happen to them like real life only they have to deal with their special powers or problems.

Another paranormal author I read is Lindsay Sands. I follow the adventures of her vampire family.

I also admire and treasure the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. I love her larger world or so many different supernaturals. Sookie is a favorite character of mine.

A vampire author with another twist on life is Christine Feehan. I especially love any of her books that bring me to the Carpathian Mountains. I love the vampire lore and traditions in the books that keep the families together and unite them against their enemies. These are scarier books but I don’t mind that.

I loved Hannah Howell’s highland vampires. Put a vampire in a kilt with that accent and whoa, you have my attention. They are a mix of historical novel and paranormal. For me that spells fun.

Burns_For newer authors, I’ve been following Jordan Rose’s Eva Prim series with her different take on vampires and also a member of the Nights of Passion crew Mandy Rosko.

I read Burns like Fire as soon as it came out and my mouth stayed open the entire time. It’s not about vampires but different paranormals, and I have to say I was stunned and amazed. I don’t want to spoil it for you. Brava, Mandy!

Now back to the question. What is my favorite paranormal romance novel?  I still don’t have one. They are all so unique and different. Do I have to choose?

What is your favorite romance novel?  Why?

Graduating to the Next Level by Stacy Hoff

graduation_jubilation

This week we celebrated both of my boys’ graduations—my younger son from elementary school and my older boy from middle school. Despite all the cake,  I find the milestone bittersweet. It is odd, and surprisingly hard, for me to close these chapters in my boys’ childhoods. I am left with the sense that I am no longer a mom to young boys; they are quickly becoming young men.

book_strap_color  Books_in_Backpack

For the longest time, despite their rapid growth, I have held on to the belief that my kids are still little. But my fourteen year old is now six feet tall. I’m only five-foot-four. It’s getting harder and harder for me to deny his maturity. Especially when he has to look down to speak to me at eye level. Or when he carries me around the house with ease because he thinks it’s funny.

book reading_teenager

I used to lord over him, darn it!

I take solace in the fact that although this chapter in their lives may be ending, their story is just beginning. With each mile marker my children pass, they get closer and closer to living out their own dreams and ambitions. To achieving their own happiness. It’s a wonderful process for them, even if it’s a little sad for me.

I am wrapping up a new novel now. I am preparing to say good-bye to the characters I have given life to, cheered for, and struggled with. They have achieved their HEA (“happy ever after”) and it is soon time for me to move on. The closing of their chapters will be bittersweet for me, too.

I am always grateful to spend time with those I’ve created. Both in real life and in fiction. Once I’ve set their story up, they don’t need me to continue writing it because their story eventually becomes their own.

There’s never a tissue around when I need it.

Love is Love is Love by Heather Novak

The events last weekend in Orlando have left me numb and heartbroken. It’s hard to even breathe. First, we were rocked by the death of singer and former The Voice contestant Christina Grimmie, who was fatally shot after her concert, then we were destroyed by the attack at Pulse Night Club.

This is a time when we need to celebrate love in order to keep our hearts beating. This is why I love romance.

I reached out to my favorite book nerds and asked them to share their most loved LGBT romances with me.

Here were some of their favorites:

The Lightning Struck Heart by TJ Klune

Once upon a time, in an alleyway in the slums of the City Of Lockes, a young and somewhat lonely boy named Sam Haversford turns a group of teenage douchebags into stone completely by accident.
Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam’s pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the King’s Wizard, Morgan of Shadows.
When Sam’s fourteen, he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds.
At fifteen, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castle—Knight Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed.
Naturally, it all goes to hell when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can’t control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the King sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan’s boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have.

THIRDS series by Charlie Cochet

When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.
Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

Tigers and Devils by Sean Kennedy

The most important things in Simon Murray’s life are football, friends, and film—in that order. His friends despair of him ever meeting someone, but despite his loneliness, Simon is cautious about looking for more. Then his best friends drag him to a party, where he barges into a football conversation and ends up defending the honour of star forward Declan Tyler—unaware that the athlete is present. In that first awkward meeting, neither man has any idea they will change each other’s lives forever.
Like his entire family, Simon revels in living in Melbourne, the home of Australian Rules football and mecca for serious fans. There, players are treated like gods—until they do something to fall out of public favour. This year, the public is taking Declan to task for suffering injuries outside his control, so Simon’s support is a bright spot.
But as Simon and Declan fumble toward a relationship, keeping Declan’s homosexuality a secret from well-meaning friends and an increasingly suspicious media becomes difficult. Nothing can stay hidden forever. Soon Declan will have to choose between the career he loves and the man he wants, and Simon has never been known to make things easy—for himself or for others.

On Solid Ground by Melissa Collins

When Jacob “Dax” Daxton returns home from war, he has to fight a new battle – the one to find his place in the world. The man who normally has a clear path to victory surrounded by brothers in combat is suddenly lost and alone. After meeting Beckett Ridge, a bearded tattoo artist, Dax’s journey begins winding down an unexpected path.

Memorizing You by Dan Skinner

From acclaimed m/m romance photographer, Dan Skinner, a coming of age tale unfolds against the colorful, stylish, and turbulent backdrop of free love, revolution, and The Beatles.
Two high school boys from different walks of life: Ryan, a handsome athlete, and David, an average joe from a blue collar family, discover their desires, stealing their kisses under the cover of an old oak at night. Their love begins a secret life, hidden from their families, friends, and classmates. As their passion grows, so does the danger of their discovery. Their only hope is to create a separate world where every kiss is a treasure and every moment… memorable.
First love. Secret love. Unforgettable love.

Bear, Otter, and the Kid by TJ Klune

Three years ago, Bear McKenna’s mother took off for parts unknown with her new boyfriend, leaving Bear to raise his six-year-old brother Tyson, aka the Kid. Somehow they’ve muddled through, but since he’s totally devoted to the Kid, Bear isn’t actually doing much living—with a few exceptions, he’s retreated from the world, and he’s mostly okay with that. Until Otter comes home.
Otter is Bear’s best friend’s older brother, and as they’ve done for their whole lives, Bear and Otter crash and collide in ways neither expect. This time, though, there’s nowhere to run from the depth of emotion between them. Bear still believes his place is as the Kid’s guardian, but he can’t help thinking there could be something more for him in the world… something or someone.

The Nothingness of Ben by Brad Boney

Ben Walsh is well on his way to becoming one of Manhattan’s top litigators, with a gorgeous boyfriend and friends on the A-list. His life is perfect until he gets a phone call that brings it all crashing down: a car accident takes his parents, and now he must return to Austin to raise three teenage brothers he barely knows.
During the funeral, Ben meets Travis Atwood, the redneck neighbor with a huge heart. Their relationship initially runs hot and cold, from contentious to flirtatious, but when the weight of responsibility starts wearing on Ben, he turns to Travis, and the pressure shapes their friendship into something that feels a lot like love. Ben thinks he’s found a way to have his old life, his new life, and Travis too, but love isn’t always easy. Will he learn to recognize that sometimes the worst thing imaginable can lead him to the place he was meant to be?

I wish you all happiness, love, and most of all, good books.

Stretch Yourself

Okay, so I’m not talking about Yoga or Pilates—I really wish that was the case as I could use a bit of a relaxing, meditation state right now. What I’m talking about is what you really do to stretch yourself in all aspects of life… you know push those boundaries, make yourself stronger, challenge yourself. Or the question is, do you do this and if not, why not? If you do, why do you do it?

I fall into the bucket of those who do challenge and stretch—even if admittedly I don’t do this enough in some aspects of my life (exercise or eating right is probably one of those areas). So why do I do it? You know, I’m not sure a lot of the time. It’s kind of like an urge inside of me that tells me I need to work harder and do better. I honestly think that kind of what got me into my “mess” this past year where I really had to pause and take a look at my life. I have a constant drive to do better but the truth is that I’m not sure if better in what I’m doing is going to make me happy. Make sense?

As kids, we are raised not to quit, to keep on trying, to keep practicing to get better and to work hard. This is a great mentality to build a strong foundation but what about as we get older? Sure it will help us climb corporate ladders and assimilate into today’s tough working world but more than a few of all of us will at some point ask “Is this it?” or “Is this what I really want?” The truth is that these words come with a bunch of sleepless nights and tough decisions but if you can make it through until your next “crisis” it really is worth it. There isn’t a recipe for success, just time and the same dedication to finding out what truly makes you tick. What it is that you value above all else. What it is that makes you happy. Only then will you truly stretch yourself to where you’ll be happy to go.

Happy writing this week and good luck!

Critters in the Garden Paranormal-Scope

Everything is growing but gypsy moth caterpillars are moving in. Also something is chewing holes is the basil.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Dragons are extreme gardeners. They believe in the scorched land method. That’s no reason to get rid of everything. Clear away the weeds and pests.

Taurus:

Vampires don’t garden. But they are great admirers of roses. They love catching that moment in time when beauty is immortal. Enjoy the beauty around you. Savor the moment.

Gemini:

Were rabbits are frolicking in delight. Add more greens to your diet and spend time frolicking just because.

Cancer:

Werewolves are cute and fuzzy. Be prepared to meet someone new.  They may be cute. I’ll leave the fuzzy part up to you.

Leo:

Shapeshifters love to dig flower beds and plant vegetables.  Consider a little garden for recreation or visit gardens and flower shows.

Virgo:

Zombies are not good gardeners. They have a purple thumb and everything else. Sitting on the sofa and watching TV is more their style.  Sometimes it’s good to be a zombie.

Libra:

Werebears love blueberry patches. Invest in fruit. Eat healthier.

Scorpio:

Eagleshifters see things from a long ways off.  Company is coming. There’s some fun ahead.

Sagittarius:

Pixies know the magic of plants. Open yourself up to having a few plants and eat more greens. It’s all about increasing your energy.

Capricorn:

Gnomes love the garden. Eat well. Fill your home with flowers. Enjoy what you have and the company you keep.

Aquarius:

Elves are workaholics. You need to expand your personal space. Add a plant to your work station or office. Maybe even a picture of a pastoral scene. Make work more relaxing.

Pisces:

Faeries have the gift of gardening. Flowers bloom. Opportunities will bloom for you too. May your future harvest be plentiful.

Living History by Jenna Jaxon

I’ve been writing historical romances for about eight years now. Research has been a big part of my writing, both through reading books and internet posts and websites. But one source I knew about but didn’t use is pretty much right under my nose: Colonial Williamsburg.

I did a pictorial post about Christmas in Williamsburg, but there is so much more there that I can use in my House of Pleasure series, which is set in 1761. Of course, my books are set in England, but at that time most of the fashions and almost all ways of life are extremely similar.

20160611_154848I was reminded of this just this week because my youngest daughter is working at Colonial Williamsburg this summer as an Orientation Interpreter. She’s in costume every day and has to speak, move and dress in period. She had two weeks of orientation during which she learned all about the period, how to stand, how to speak, what her station in life would have been (she’s middling status, which would be working class), and what items she could realistically have and remain in period. They include a pottery cup, a pocket watch, sunglasses (think small, round John Lennon-type classes), a book, a fan, knitting or embroidery, and a pennywhistle. She keeps all these articles in a large woven basket.20160611_231800

Historical romance author Loretta Chase, whose books I love, very often goes to Colonial Williamsburg. Below is a short video  shot in the milliner’s shop there she had posted on her blog.

This summer I plan to take several trips to Colonial Williamsburg to take pictures and absorb the look of the period. I’m working on edits for the third book of the House of Pleasure series, Only a Mistress Will Do, again set in the same period, and I think it will help me with my descriptions especially of the clothing. I really love this period because in both England and America it was a much wilder time.20160611_153542

Author Carly Jordynn is Passionate about Writing by Stacy Hoff

Stacy_Cartoon_v2 Hello Passionate readers! Today I have author Carly Jordynn. Read on to find out why she’s passionate, too!

Carly Jordynn pic

Passion. Everybody has it and everybody wants it. When you think of that single word, passion, it evokes all kinds of images from racy romance scenes to underwater basket weaving. I’ve been asked many times over the years, what is your passion? What is it you cannot live without? There are so many things that come to mind—my daughter, my family, my faith, driving fast, movies, books, writing, humor—get the picture?

When I was a young teen, I kept a diary. Each day I recorded what happened at school, what teacher was mean, what boy smiled at me that day, who I was crushing on, etc… Some days were ultimately boring so I would make up what I wanted to happen, like maybe the cute football player and I snuck a quick kiss between classes. LOL. I think these early “stories” developed my imagination into what it is today.

I write paranormal romance, young adult romance, time-travel romance, and sweet romance. When I’m writing a sweet romance, I think back to those early diary entries. Inevitably, the character will end up in one of the situations from back then, whether based on a true occurrence or one of the imagined ones.

Obviously, I have no “real” situations to draw on when writing paranormal or time-travel, however, I dated a lot in high school and college and will sometimes draw on one of those instances as the basis for the romance part. It’s cool to be able to insert that little bit of myself into the book. If I didn’t like the original outcome, I can always change it.

So, I guess while the passions I mentioned earlier are definitely things/people I cannot live without, writing is in my soul. It is my way of presenting artistic expression into the world. Writing, writing is my passion.
