A Wondrous Boat at Mystic – Mayflower II

mayflower-2-bYou are probably wondering what you are looking at. First the guy with the hat is my husband who is a Mayflower descendant. We went to Mystic Seaport to see the Mayflower II, which is a full-scale replica of the original Mayflower that brought the Pilgrims to  Massachusetts. It’s in Mystic Seaport for repairs at the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. It’s wintering there and we will be checking on it to watch the progress. For those that aren’t close to Mystic, Connecticut, and would like to watch the progress too, here is the live cam website which also has updates and additional history about the ship. http://www.mysticseaport.org/locations/mayflowerii/

mayflower-1-aI tried to take better photos with my phone but the sun was not in the right place. So a digital camera is now on my Christmas list, and I will just have to keep going back to take pictures at different times to get better pictures. This is the stern of the ship with the round Mayflower emblem.  Unfortunately as Mayflower II is currently being worked on, it is is not open for visiting.  I plan on being there when it sails home to Plimouth and then going to Plimouth Plantation to visit it.

Mystic Seaport is called The Museum of America and the Sea. It has a village with wonderful indoor displays staffed with storytellers, historians, craftspeople, and musicians as well as the ships you can visit. My grandchildren love the Children’s Museum and the Playscape. I’m giving you the site as they have so many things for everyone, you just have to click around and see what you’d like. http://www.mysticseaport.org/

If you’re in Connecticut, visit Mystic Seaport. If you run into me, be sure to say hi.

Sprinting to Paperback by Stacy Hoff

JockeyingForYou1800

My latest print release, JOCKEYING FOR YOU, has me thinking about print sales again. Especially since JOCKEYING’s print debut comes right on the heels of the print debut of DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC. http://wp.me/prBca-4RP

If you’re published with a small press like I am, it’s likely that you have your books released first in e-format, followed by print format a few months later (if at all). It’s a truism that many small presses believe most people today are buying e-format books, and focus on e-sales accordingly.

There’s a lot of truth to the power of e-book sales, especially with younger readers. Not to mention the draw of Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program. Add to this the dwindling number of large brick-and-mortar bookstores; only the “big 5” publishers can afford to absorb the loss from retailers who ship back returned books. Accordingly, many small publishers back off print altogether, or make the print copies they do produce more about “author promo” than about sales.

Books_in_Backpack

But print has it’s advantages. For one thing, print format is needed to enter the romance industries biggest contest—the RITA, sponsored by Romance Writers’ of America (RWA), along with other, well-respected (albeit smaller) competitions for published authors. Print copies can also be sold to indie bookstores, which can not only generate sales that impact the New York Times best seller list, but may also have a kinder return policy for publishers.

box_with_books

For me, the question of print sales is personal—the biggest advantage of print is my holding a copy of my book in my hands. Thus, I made sure when I was looking at potential publishers I chose one that would be open to print publication. I knew I would not be happy with e-format only. From a sales, promo, and personal perspective, I am glad I went with a publisher willing to do both e-format and print.

My opinion is not universal. There are many authors and readers alike who believe that e-format is “where it’s at.” Please weigh in. I love gathering this data. My hope is to report back with a summary from all those who were kind enough to chime in.

I’ve Been Gilmored: What the Ending Means by Heather Novak (**WARNING** SPOILERS)

On November 25, I watched all four Gilmore Girl Revival episodes.

I have been Gilmored.

And I’ve solved the ending.

After waiting for nearly 10 years to find my way back to Stars Hollow, I finally made the trip “home” for my birthday. It was simultaneously everything I hoped for and missing things I wanted. What is the issue? We’re all grown up.

**SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED BELOW! IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE REVIVAL, STOP READING! YOU ARE CONTINUING AT YOUR OWN RISK! I SPOIL THE CRAP OUT OF THE ENDING!**

**LAST CHANCE**

**COPPER BOOM!**

I’m Rory’s age, although she was a year behind me in school. During the original series, I agreed with Rory and most of her choices (and as charming as Logan is – and HE IS CHARMING – still can’t get behind him.)

But 32 year old Rory?

The hell, girl?

I would NEVER go back to my college boyfriend and be his mistress…which is good because I did just get married…soooo there’s also that. This story line is much more suited to someone in their mid-twenties, but I digress.

I find myself more on Emily’s side! There, I said it.

I grieved at Richard’s absence, although ASP did an amazing job making his presence felt. When Rory entered his study and saw him in the chair? Holy cats. HICCUP SOBS. It was a mess. And then she sat and typed at his desk with her painting right there?

GD. I was done.

Now, the show had some issues. I had trouble keeping up with the timeline, especially in Fall. I couldn’t tell if it was a day or a week or a month later. To be fair, I watched the show with some friends and family, so it’s possible I was just distracted.

I missed the theme song, which we didn’t get until the last episode. I was thrilled to see Carole King come back! (Ironically, my day job has me working on an event she’s going to be attending, so it was a fun real-life-meets-fictional-life moment.) I laughed hard at the crack to her music. And while I adored the Stars Hollow musical, it was loooooong.

But it was like a reunion for the soul! I’m so glad Melissa McCarthy came back, it was the perfect cameo for her. I missed Max and really wished he made an appearance at Chilton. The recast of Tristan…let’s not even talk about that. And I need to mention PARIS IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITES! (Except I can’t even with her and Doyle right now.)

Kirk made a new film. Enough said.

But let’s be honest. You’re all here to understand the cliff hanger. I’m here to help.

I can feel some of you pulling away. I know a huge negative wave has washed through the audience. Yes, at 32 as well, I’m disappointed in Rory’s choices. She SHOULDN’T have been having an affair (AGAIN) with someone. I think she could’ve stayed in politics with her talent. She could have created her own travel blog by now. She was a little too “spoiled millennial” to me, and I found her SUPER annoying in many scenes.

That being said, I also remember this ending was written for a younger Rory. To be fair, if this had happened to younger Rory, I would’ve been devastated. Now, I’m just wondering why the hell she wasn’t up to date on her birth control…

After the last line, the talk with Christopher made sense. SO much sense. It also undoubtedly cast Logan as Christopher. They are pretty much the same person. Charming, attractive, rich, and in a constant battle with pleasing his parents while living his own life, but ultimately choosing money. They want to be in the lives of the “Force of Nature” Gilmores, but they can’t hack it. They don’t have the backbone.

With Logan as Christopher, you know that leaves Jess as Luke. WE FINALLY got a hint of it in Fall.

1) Let’s take a moment an appreciate Jess’s butt in those jeans. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

2) He’s the only one who’s been able to pull Rory out of her ruts. Every serious rut, he’s there. He challenges her to be a better person and own her mistakes as well as her talent.

3) HE IS NOT TECHNICALLY RELATED! It’s a bit “in the close circle” if you will, but he’s a step-nephew who didn’t become a step-nephew until Rory was 32. That’s not even a little weird.

4) He encourages her to write the book. When she runs out and shows him the pages at the end, it’s perfect! You can see it in his eyes and on her face.

5) THE LONG STARE. Guys, that was it. That long stare was the “beginning.”

So here’s how I see it playing out:

Rory will not tell Logan that she’s pregnant until after he’s married. He will not want to tell his family because then they’ll know about the affair, but he’ll try to be part of her life and pay her off. Rory will struggle with this (because Logan IS charming and crazy hot without a shirt on), but eventually find her backbone and tell him to sod off.

Gilmore Girls book will become a best seller and land Rory into a lengthy book deal. She’ll stay in Stars Hollow and visit Nantucket to write while raising a mini-me, which better be a daughter. If it’s a boy, however, she’ll name it Richard. During this time, Jess will be around for holidays and whatnot, biding his time.

Eventually, Jess and Rory will connect. Maybe through a health scare with Lorelei/Luke, maybe through someone’s passing, maybe through something terribly exciting…like Doyle picking up one of her books and turning it into a movie! (I think the implication is that the TV show was based on the book here.)

Jess and Rory will finally get married and move to a bigger city, but visit Stars Hollow often. He will continue his publishing and she will continue writing and they’ll make the power couple of the decade.

So yes, despite the cliffhanger, all of the seeds are in place for a Happily Ever After. This was just FINALLY Lorelei’s time. My husband was very glad we got married BEFORE I saw the Luke and Lorelei wedding, let me tell you (I would have wanted the entire thing and our wedding planner would’ve killed me.)

I’m happy with the revival. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

On this day in 1835 Hans Christian Andersen published his first book of fairy tales.

Why Perfection?

I’ve been contemplating perfection lately–or probably more accurately, our obsession with being perfect or at least constantly improving. But the truth is, that isn’t the way we are programmed. We age, we sag, our brains tend to forget and we regress. Not at first, but eventually.

My younger son asked me the other day what my stomach was. He is not yet two and a half and he had no problem pointing out that my pants were too tight. Of course the way he did it was so comical that it nearly made up for my horror in realizing he can now more clearly see my flaws. Or at least enough to question them.

As with any experience, I reflected upon the myriad of emotions that seemed to hit me and settled on a feeling of annoyance, mostly with myself and my inability to embrace what I have. I lots weird as I realize many things–my looks, my level of intelligence, my wonderful family…and I am okay or even more than okay with these and many other aspects of my life. Nothing is perfect but do I really need it to be? Not really. And yet, I, as well as many out there, can’t seem to let myself relax enough to be proud of or embrace my imperfections. So I’ve got a challenge for myself and for all. As we near another New Year and another new beginning, try to think about what you don’t like or haven’t yet learned to embrace (laugh lines, love handles, gray hair, etc) and simply enjoy your so called imperfections and what they mean or stand for. You may find some good in it.

Happy writing this week!

NaNoWriMo Finished and a New Book by Mandy Rosko

So even though I’ve completed my NaNo Novel, I still have about 16K more words left to get done before I’m satisfied. It will put my word count for the month at an all time high of 170K

And I want that number @_@

To break it down, that’s 3 35K word novellas, my 50K word novel for NaNoWriMo, and 15K words for my Patreon Novel, Kidnapped by the Dragon.

Patrons get early access to it, which is pretty sweet

Autumn Ending Paranormal-Scope

Soon there will be more leaves on the ground than in the trees. I’ve seen light snow twice but it left with no trace. The world is growing colder where I live. People are looking for ways to warm their hearts.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

The week for:

Aries:

Elves enjoy sweet diversions but don’t let it distract you from work that needs to be done. Focus and you’ll do well.

Taurus:

Gnomes are careful spenders. This may not be a good time to be over generous. Investigate any charity you are considering to see where their money goes.

Gemini:

Faeries love to frolic. Being too serious is bringing you down. Plan some light-hearted, fun activities.

Cancer:

A vampire on your doorstep can only mean one thing. Check out a new opportunity. It may be what you are looking for.

Leo:

Aslan roars and springs into action. Creativity abounds. Balance your life with an enjoyable creative pursuit.

Virgo:

Gnomes love traveling. A new place is on your horizon. Check it out and make new friends.

Libra:

Pixies flutter but don’t you. It’s time to upgrade and improve. Study something you have always wanted to do.

Scorpio:

Faeries are adorable flights of fantasy. Don’t spend money easily this week. Investigate any new investment opportunity thoroughly.

Sagittarius:

Mermaids dive deep to find treasure. Long-term investments may start paying off. Look at any new project from a long-term view.

Capricorn:

Dragon visualize their dreams to bring them forth. It’s time for you to do the same.

Aquarius:

Werewolves love their pack. Someone new is coming. Be prepared.

Pisces:

Griffons soar. A life change is coming your way. Explore all your options. Have fun with it.

The Night Before The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade By Stacy Hoff

img_1330-hello blowupimg_1287

Wednesday night, my family and I participated in a tradition I had never done in New York City, even though I grew up there—the inflation of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons. This “evening before” event was more wonderful than I could have imagined. Holiday songs played over loudspeakers, giving a festive mood. Thousands laughed, sang, talked, and “ooh-ed” and “ahh-ed” at the sight of the massive, beautiful balloons. New York City may be a massive metropolis filled with tourists but it felt like an close-knit community to me.

street-img_1317

The balloon blowing takes place in Manhattan by the American Museum of Natural History, at 81st Street and Central Park West. It winds all the way to 79th Street and Columbus Ave. It’s one large square block filled with throngs of people and balloons.

nat-hist-img_1339

I’m so glad I took my kids to see this sight. It was definitely worth the trip to Manhattan from New England. Ironically, I got to see now what I missed in my childhood. At least in my youth I got to see the parade live. I never knew about the balloon blowing, or else I would have begged my parents.

Thanksgiving may be done, but is the holiday really over? Not when wonderful memories live on!

star

I wish all of you a joyous Thanksgiving weekend!

Happy Birthday to Me! Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving! By Heather Novak

HAPPY THANKSGIVING Nights of Passion friends!

andy-and-me-eating-cake

My twin and me eating our birthday cake!

Thanksgiving is always a mixed bag of feels for me, this year more than ever. My family is spread across the world, so big family dinners are a thing of my childhood. Thankfully, my in-laws and I always celebrate together (This year, I’m cooking! For the first time! AH!).

Okay, let’s get real readers. I know some of you are reading this post hiding from your family that just brought up politics and you’re out of wine.

Allow me to distract you.

I present you with the following three videos (safe for any political side) that you can watch in the bathroom or, as the video suggests, the parking lot at Target.

SNL Thanksgiving Miracle (Adele Hello Spoof)

SNL Target Thanksgiving Video (hilarious for every Target lover)

My Couch – a fun Thanksgiving song  (How to use football to keep the peace)

Need more distraction? Here is a beautiful article written by a Native American woman and her personal celebration here.

Another tip for dealing with this potentially rocky day? Remember what you’re thankful for! This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for my birthday! Because of my rare disease, I never thought I’d see my 32nd birthday and I’ve got to tell you, it’s a pretty awesome place to be. Here’s hoping I get 32 more.

I’m also thankful for my family, both blood and acquired, and I’m thankful for all of you. You’re the reason I write this blog every week!

What are you thankful for?

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

On this day in 1984, I was born – three minutes before my twin brother, Andrew!
