Making TV worth watching with the Bell Fund. How do we get it made?
How do we get it made? As producers who make shows regularly can attest - constant adaptation, market evaluation and agility are required to survive and thrive in this exciting (and often) confounding business. We do it because it’s hard and because each project is a monumental, multi-year marathon. We do it because we believe what we have to say, show, and share has the power to move hearts and minds.
The overwhelming majority of producers in the Canadian Media Producers Association are small business owners with 1 or 2 full time employees. We know the grind of wearing multiple hats and building a village of teammates for each production, only to raze it within a few short weeks or months of production and start over – again and again. It’s incredibly difficult and inherently risky (especially operating within years of pandemic, rising inflation and insurance safety nets that seem to grow bigger and bigger holes). And yet – the
alchemy of manifesting a unique idea with a team of like-minded creatives is addictive – it’s a rollercoaster and we can’t imagine getting off.

I’m Charlie David, producer and owner of Border2Border Entertainment. We produce award- winning digital, film, and television projects for the 2SLGBTQIA+ audience. Border2Border Entertainment pursues a digital first strategy through the production and distribution of short and long form documentaries, scripted and lifestyle series, audiobooks, and branded video.

I used to be an actor and TV host and worked from someone else’s script. Building my own production company and producing and directing allows me to not worry if my hair is out
of place (usually) and instead, to identify what stories have been historically left out in our
society. Who around our proverbial story-sharing fire has been quietly sitting in darkness
uninvited to speak?
Those are the folks I’m interested to learn from. To shine the light and hand the mic to underrepresented creators and make content for underserved audiences. It’s not always easy (okay, never easy) and there are mistakes made, along
with opportunities for learning and growth but I’m glad I bought a ticket and chose this rollercoaster.
We’re making queer content, we’re making accessible content with shows like Womb Envy, we’re creating challenging conversations that change the dial on cis gendered, non-binary, trans and queer bodies. And most importantly, we’re providing a BIG sand box in which to play and inviting more and more people to join us. We’re
working hard to ensure that at each stage of a production we’re inclusive. We don’t make the kind of stuff that most companies make and I’m proud of that – it sets us apart.

The Bell Fund has ensured we’ve had a solid foundation to experiment, to be daring, and to take some creative risks. For all of that, I’m humbled and grateful to be a recipient. The Bell Fund continues to be a strategic partner and cornerstone for the growth of my business and the creation of our series like Avocado Toast,
Dating Unlocked, Womb Envy and Drag Heals.
This financial and educational support continues to make us a better, stronger competitor in this challenging industry. This rollercoaster can be terrifying, but it’s also too much fun to get off. I’m thankful to have the Bell Fund holding our hand!

Award-Winning Dramedy AVOCADO TOAST THE SERIES Returns With Hilarious and Heartfelt Final Season, Streaming September 9 on OUTtv.comTORONTO (August 25, 2022) – Who is Molly without Elle? It’s time for a new chapter. Picking up where Season 1 left off, Avocado Toast The Series (10x15) returns as a friendship hangs in the balance and unseen illnesses threaten to change their lives forever. Created by screenwriters and stars Heidi Lynch and Perrie Voss and produced by Border2Border Entertainment, the second and final season of the critically acclaimed, award-winning dramedy begins streaming Friday, Sept. 9 on OUTtv.com (Canada) and froot.tv (U.K./Ireland). (L to R: Perrie Voss as Elle, Alexander Nunez as Jordan, and Heidi Lynch as Molly)Watch the Season 2 teaserPhotography available for download hereMolly (Lynch) is in London, England, processing her heartbreak from ‘The One’ and facing her new endometriosis/adenomyosis diagnoses. Meanwhile, back in Toronto, Elle (Voss) has found herself a member of “Community,” a retreat she signed up for to recoup after a nervous breakdown. But what was meant to be a two-week mental health break is now going on five months – and the fact that it is definitely a cult is clear to everyone but Elle. As a result, the ambitious Jordan (Alexander Nunez) has been left to juggle the ad agency that he and Elle started all on his own, and when a high-stakes client requires him to track Elle down, he finds a very different version of his old workaholic/party-girl friend.Ultimately, Molly returns to Toronto and must learn how to ask for help to receive the surgery and support that she needs, while Elle feels like everyone who ever loved her in the real world has abandoned her. As Molly and Elle navigate their illnesses and their paths continue to diverge, a permanent friendship breakup seems inevitable... or could their paths to self-discovery bring them back together?“It was connecting with the endowarrior community online that first helped me find the sanity and support I really needed in my own journey with endometriosis, and I wanted to share that experience and raise awareness through Molly’s story,” said Lynch. “More than anything this season, I wanted to give Molly and Elle’s powerful friendship the send-off it deserved and fully explore the theme of female friendship breakups, something not widely represented on screen. I also cannot wait to see Alexander Nunez and Prince Amponsah continue to take over the industry! Writing with and for them was an absolute highlight for me.”“I wanted to look at overwhelm and burnout. It can feel extremely daunting to get the help we need for our mental health and I wanted to explore this alongside the added layer of overcoming manipulation and control from those we thought we could trust and how that affects our wellbeing. Ultimately, I wanted to reach our viewers through personal and shared experience to create community and connection,” said Voss. “We always approach our writing from the lens of ‘What is the worst that can happen and how can we also find the humour and absurdity in it?’. My hope is that humour continues to keep our story grounded and humanizes the characters.”Created by screenwriters and stars Heidi Lynch and Perrie Voss and directed by Sam Coyle (Hazy Little Thing, Darkside), Season 2 of Avocado Toast The Series boasts a dynamic all-Canadian cast, featuring Alexander Nunez (Moonshine, A Teacher), Prince Amponsah (Station Eleven, Killjoys), Nelu Handa (Baroness Von Sketch Show, Workin’ Moms), Mag Ruffman (Alias Grace, Road to Avonlea), Jefferson Mappin (Unforgiven, The Freshman), Clare McConnell (Murdoch Mysteries, Nurses), and Elena Juatco (Jann, Schitt’s Creek). Avocado Toast The Series is produced by Border2Border Entertainment with Charlie David, Heidi Lynch of Bone Vault Inc., and Perrie Voss serving as producers. Executive producers are Jefferson Mappin along with Brad Danks and Phillip Webb from OUTtv. An OUTtv original series, Avocado Toast the Series went to camera with the financial support of the Canada Media Fund, the Bell Fund, and Ontario Creates IDM Production Fund.Avocado Toast The Series OnlineWebsite: www.avocadotoastseries.com Instagram: @avocadotoastseriesTikTok: @avocadotoasttheseriesTwitter: @AvoToastSeriesFacebook: @avocadotoastseries About Heidi LynchHeidi Lynch is an award winning actor, writer and producer. Why Make a Web Series?

What is a web series? And why make them? WebSeries Canada invited 35 Canadian and international decision-makers from the world of web series – or short form series - to a one-day Summit to try to establish a profile for web series within the media ecosystem.
“A Deep Dive Into the Wonderful World of Web Series” reports on the discussions noting the challenges and some solutions.
These industry influencers agreed that web series (or short form series with episodes of under 20 minutes running time) provide opportunity, experience, on-the-job training and access to audiences for new voices. It is a storytelling medium that is not supported by traditional broadcasting. Used as “proof-of-concepts”, web series creators may leverage their short stories into potential bigger budget broadcast or film projects. Although the producers and creators of web series aim for wide international audiences, distribution to date has shown that generating significant revenues is the exception and rarely a goal.
Representatives from Canada and the US, Australia and Brazil, Germany and South Korea, urged emerging creators to get the business and audience development training that they need to enhance their skills and reach their audiences. They encouraged broadcasters and streamers to consider short form series as “fillers” or as curated packages or as themed content or as anthologies to be “executive produced” by trusted producers. They emphasized the diverse voices and perspectives that can be encouraged through web series.
All agreed that web festivals serve an important role for the production community and a new International Association of Web Series Festivals has been established to encourage more strategies for international success and promotion to audiences around the world. It was noted that Canada clearly stands out as a leader in the production of short form series; as one international delegate stated: “Canada has a lot of funding and a lot of potential. It is today the capital of web series on the planet.”

Bell Fund selects Drag Heals season 4 and Settle Down
Funding decisions for the Short-Form Digital Series and TV Selective Programs (April 3, 2023 Round)
Bell Fund approves funding of $4.4 million for 11 short-form digital series and 10 TV series.
Montreal and Toronto, July 10, 2023 — The Board of Directors of the Bell Fund has announced its decisions for the latest round of the Short-Form Digital Series Program and the TV Selective Program. Bell Fund has committed over $2 million to the production of 11 short-form series (6 English and 5 French) — including $1.5 million for production and half a million for audience development — and $2.4 million to support the production of 10 TV series (5 English and 5 French).Among the six English-language digital series is Northern Tales. Produced by Yukon-based Shot in the Dark Productions, this children’sseries uses puppets to explore how animals in the Boreal Forest interact witheach other, their environment, northern people and the wider world. This is Bell Fund’s first short-form series with Northwestel Community TV as a distribution platform.
Also in the Children’s and Youth genre is Shaftesbury’s Macy Murdoch, which is set to return to CBC Gem with a second season of time travel, adventures and a new murder for Macy, Billie and Zane to solve.

OUTtv has licensed two scripted series this round. Settle Down (Border2Border Entertainment) follows Mason Flynn, an expert on queer romance and a matchmaker who seems to know it all when it comes to love ... except the answer to why he can't keep a boyfriend. Two Brothers follows the struggles of a set of fraternal twins faced with heartache, death, racism, and homophobia as they try to turn the small town of Severn Bridge into their new home. The series is produced by Meikle Productions, a new applicant to the Fund.Non-fiction includes the heartwarming Finding Diamonds by Farpoint Films from Manitoba — the series follows Ian Bawa and his dog Diamond as they travel across the country to share stories about how pets have helped Canadians overcome tragedy and trauma — and Every Body Curious by Louise Pollard —a fun, illuminating series exploring sex, sexuality and healthy relationships.English TV series season renewals lead the way this round of the TV Selective Program with the fourth season of Drag Heals (from Border2Border Entertainment for OUTtv), and third seasons of Mysteries From Above (from Saloon Media for Blue Ant Media’s Cottage Life) and Gespe'gewa'gi: The Last Land (from Rezolution Pictures for APTN). This speaks to the appeal of stories that range from intimate views at drag artists creating live audience performances to mysteries investigated from the vantage point of drones to the world of Mi’kmaq fisheries in connection to their people, traditions and homeland. Rounding up the English TV series are Allegiance (Lark Productions) and One More Time (Counterfeit Pictures), both set to launch on CBC.

The Fund remains committed to supporting Black, Indigenous, Racialized and underrepresented communities, enabling all producer/creators, emerging and established, to tell their original stories. This commitment is reflected not only in Bell Fund’s financial support for the production and development of audiovisual content by underrepresented voices, but also in the Fund’s collaboration with and sponsorship of organizations and activities that foster equity, diversity and inclusion in the screen-based industries across Canada. This year’s supported initiatives include the ACCT’s Anti-Racism Training, the BSO-Rogers Script Development Program, the Disability Screen Office’s Best Practice Guide for Disability Engagement in the Screen-Based Industries, the DOC Atlantic Breakthrough Program, Fondation Fabienne Colas’ Black Markets, the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, the National Screen Institute’s Access BIPOC Producers Program, Reelworld’s Film Festival and Emerging 20 Program, and Whistler Film Festival’s Indigenous Filmmaker Fellowship.

Womb Envy debuts May 10th on AMI and OUTtv
May 9, 2023 — When a gay party boy’s estranged small-town best friend shows up expecting him to play baby daddy, even a lover who is partially sighted and an imaginary drag queen can’t stop his womb envy. Accessible Media Inc. (AMI), in partnership with Border2Border Entertainment and OUTtv, is thrilled to reveal the debut date of the web series Womb Envy on AMI.ca, the AMI-tv App and OUTtv.com. The first two episodes of Womb Envy debut Wednesday, May 10, on AMI.ca, the AMI-tv App and OUTtv.com; two episodes will debut online on subsequent Wednesdays. Additionally, the first episode will be available on AMI’s, OUTtv’s and Border2Border Entertainment’s YouTube channels in a special sneak peek prior to May 10. Created by Toronto drag artist Champagna, Womb Envy (12 x 15 minutes) is written by Mark Keller, directed by Jake Horowitz and produced by Charlie David of Border2Border Entertainment for AMI-tv and OUTtv.

“We’re making queer content, we’re making accessible content and with shows like Womb Envy, we’re creating challenging conversations on cisgendered, non-binary, trans, disabled and queer bodies,” said Charlie David, President and Producer, Border2Border Entertainment. ”Most importantly, we’re providing a BIG sand box in which to play and inviting more people to join us. We’re working hard to ensure that at each stage of a production we’re inclusive. We don’t make the kind of shows that most companies make and I’m proud of that—it sets us apart.” “Womb Envy is a fantastic project,” said Philip Webb, COO OUTtv Network. “OUTtv is proud to be supporting creators like Champagna, Mark and Jake to make accessible, life affirming and beautiful shows which celebrate our community.” “We are proud and excited to bring Womb Envy to our audience,” says John Melville, Vice President of Content Development and Operations, AMI. “Truly inclusive storytelling is at the heart of what AMI does, and Womb Envy is proof of that.”
https://youtu.be/p794QEop8pYMax (Daniel Fernandes, The Space) is stuck in a rut. Nearly 30 years old, he is wanting more than the tired beat of the Toronto gay dance floor and needs a purpose in his life other than vodka and a deteriorating septum. Meanwhile, Maggie (Storm Steenson, Sunshine City) is pregnant and desperate to escape the clutches of her religious zealot mother, Dorothy (Helen Holtham), and the small town that her and Max grew up in.
Showing up on Max’s door one day after years of separation, Maggie convinces Max to pretend to be her baby daddy, since he was the only man her mother ever approved of. They create rules to ensure the success of their half-baked idea, which causes Max’s fragile queer ego to create a drag queen apparition—The Divine (Champagna, Drag Heals, Call Me Mother)—who constantly fights against this new assimilation to heteronormativity. Confusing things even more, Max soon falls head over heels in love with their Lamaze instructor, Patrick (Jeffrey Haase, Haunted Hospitals). Patrick, who is partially sighted, soon becomes an important part of Max’s life, throwing a huge wrench in their charade. Internalizing the chaos in his life, Max develops a rare condition known as couvade syndrome, bizarrely displaying pregnancy symptoms which become increasingly more difficult to hide. Everything in their lives quickly unravels, and soon Max and Mary are forced to see what’s important in life, even if that’s the hardest thing for them to do. Womb Envy is the first scripted project developed with Integrated Described Video (IDV) by Border2Border Entertainment for AMI, and the first collaboration between AMI and OUTtv, which was sparked at the Primetime conference in Ottawa in January 2020, where a conversation was started between the two Canadian networks about their similarities in serving marginalized audiences. Womb Envy is created by Champagna, written by Mark Keller and directed by Jake Horowitz. The producer is Charlie David, Champagna is associate producer. Drag Heals Season 3 Spotlight on Alice Starr
From rock ‘n roll musician to TV host to Canada’s first and only drag queen pro wrestler, Tyler Hodgkinson has always had a flair for theatrics. As Alice Starr, there’s no denying their passion and dedication for creating fun, unique and memorable performances that leave others inspired!

What has been exciting about participating in Drag Heals? The most exciting thing about participating in Drag Heals is getting to grow as a person and performer by watching other Queens and Kings accomplish exactly the same.
What’s been the biggest challenge with participating in Drag Heals? The biggest challenge with participating in Drag Heals is overcoming nerves and putting on a performance that I can be proud of. I'm working hard at shaking loose and just having fun with the entire experience.
Why do you think a show like Drag Heals is important when it comes to representation in today’s media? Drag Heals proves that there are real, vulnerable people behind the personas that you see. The show pulls back the curtain and tells the audience that entertainers struggle in life sometimes too.
What conversations from Drag Heals should be had more in today’s world? The type of conversations that have happened on Drag Heals are important because they show that everyone has a story. But equally important, the program stresses the importance of listening and learning through these stories.
What is the biggest takeaway or transformation you have gotten out of participating in Drag Heals? My biggest takeaway from participating in Drag Heals is that it's easy to get swept up in the noise of what you're doing but when you step back and take a breath, you realize that the most important thing is to have fun in life.
What was it like working with someone like Tracey Erin Smith, as well as the rest of the cast and crew? Everyone from Tracey Erin Smith to the cast and crew have been wonderful to work with. We've all learned from each other and discovered something new about ourselves along the way. It makes coming to work easy when you feel comfortable and safe!
Who or what made the biggest impact on you when participating on Drag Heals? Stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things like lip syncing, choreo and improv has made a profound impact on me and I'm now excited to explore those worlds even more after filming has completed.
How would you describe your drag, or sense of fashion and artistry in general? My drag is constantly evolving, but always "me." I have a wide range of interests, which spark ideas in my head of different looks and themes. I tend to love outfits that are bright and loud, but who knows what the future holds.
What makes you a unique drag performer? I think the fact that I'm Canada's first and only drag queen pro wrestler makes me a unique performer. I try to show people something they've never seen before and leave them remembering that moment for the rest of their lives.
What message should audiences, near and far, take with them after they watch Drag Heals? The message audiences should take with them after watching Drag Heals is that nobody's life is perfect and we all have obstacles to overcome, but you don't have to do it alone. Love yourself, love those in your life, and love what you do.

STACEY KAY - the New Type
Stacey Kay is nominated for Best Original Song 'New Type' which is the theme song for ,Drag Heals from the International Online Web Film Festival. Stacey also has a song featured in ,Avocado Toast the series , I'm Not Adele.
Why did you write the song I’m Not Adele and what’s it about? When I first moved to Toronto I sat down with these 2 men who were “artist consultants” for a big label. They were going to teach me how I could become famous. At first it was going great, but then the advice they gave me was to lose 100 pounds, work on getting a space in between my legs, change my hair to a normal colour (my weave was pink at the time), STOP rapping, and wear less make up. They said “just sing nice slow songs like Adele” and proceeded to slide a magazine across the table with a BEAUTIFUL “perfect” girl on the front, and said “if you don’t look like her, you have to change your approach”.
I remember being so frustrated at the time because I thought to myself “there already IS an Adele”. I love my wigs, I love putting on my lashes, I love dancing hard on stage to up-tempo songs, and I LOVE rapping faster than everybody else. I remember they also told me since I was now going to be more like Adele, my audience was going to be the nice, middle aged, adult contemporary crowd because that is where I would be more successful. I remember the thing that put me over the edge was when they said “there’s no money in drag queens being your target market”.
I’m sorry, WHAT? That’s the exact audience I was hoping for?? So I stormed home, my thick thighs with no space beautifully rubbing together, wig on tight, watched an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race and wrote the song “I’m Not Adele”. I made sure to rap, talk about being curvy, and remind them that Adele can’t quite bust a move like I can. PS… I love Adele so much.
Why did you write the song Alll Dat and what’s it about? Imagine the beginning of a Beyoncé concert: The lights are down, dancers are frozen in a silhouette, the big video screen flickers on. A video of Beyonce’s plays. It’s some sort of art piece with shots of her childhood. The tension is building because we know we get to see the REAL Beyoncé soon. Then, without a doubt... BOOM! The drums and instruments hit some sort of crazy beat and she rises up from underneath the stage, her fan blasting, surrounded in smoke. Ugh! The beginning of a concert is ALWAYS my favourite part!!
That is why I needed to write a “moment” for myself like this. The beginning of my album starts like a Beyoncé concert! When I do my own shows, I always start out with my song “Alll Dat” to give me that pump up. I wrote the instrumentation of the song, but it is voiced by one of my best friends and favourite singers, Tafari Anthony.
He improvised the whole speech on the spot, which is why it’s so special to me! I just let him GO OFF in the studio! This is why I am so happy this song is the opening of my album… it’s the pump up of my dreams!

Was bisexuality talked about when you were growing up? Fortunately, my Dad is a counsellor. This meant we could talk about anything and everything in my house. (Sometimes, it even got annoying to be so open!) From a young age, my parents explained sexuality to my sister and I, and my whole family was very accepting of everything. My parents were supporters of the LGBTQ+ community and taught me to be accepting of whoever people choose to be attracted to.
As I was growing up, I always thought I was attracted to boys only. Although it was such an open conversation in my home, I didn’t discover I was pansexual until later in life. This is something that is interesting to me because I have a long term boyfriend, but I have now realized my attraction is not limited to men only; I am attracted to people no matter how they identify. I realize now, it was easier to understand how I was feeling because it was talked about as I was growing up. Did your parents talk to you about sex? My parents talked to me about sex, safety, and relationships. Having a dad who is a counsellor made it easy to have the conversation. My dad has to talk to multiple young people about sex all the time, so it wasn’t a big deal in my home. My parents have always been very open, and the first time I had sex I told them right away. If I ever needed or wanted to talk about it, they were (and still are) always there.
Why do you think it’s so uncomfortable for parents and kids to talk about sex? Does it have to be?
It does not have to be uncomfortable, but I think it’s also okay if it is uncomfortable sometimes, and you shouldn’t feel guilty for feeling that way. My parents made me realize sex was a normal thing, and I could ask them anything I wanted.
My mom and dad explained the pros/cons, how to be safe, how to make sure I actually wanted to have sex, and the pressures that come with it. They didn’t ever judge me, and always made sure I was safe. To say talking about it is easy? That’s not always true, and I think that’s okay. I have an extremely open family who talks about everything. But did I love talking about sex with my parents?
No, because I also enjoyed the privacy of it (also because I am an immature child at heart, I DIDN’T enjoy picturing my mom and dad having sex). There was nothing wrong with my mom and dad being sexually active, but I think it’s also normal to not want to get in too deep (pardon the pun). I preferred to talk to them about what I needed to talk about, I chose to not be too detailed and leave some things out because I would rather have some things be private. Anytime I had a question or concern I would go to them though. I am forever grateful that my parents made me feel comfortable talking to them about sex.
You’ve performed and recorded with some big names in the music world - who have been your favourite to work with?
I have to tell you about my favourite moment of all time. I didn’t exactly “work with” this person… but I’m going to pretend this counts! So I get a call from “Glamour Magazine” asking to do an interview. At first I thought it was a prank call because it was GLAMOUR MAGAZINE… but after a couple minutes realized it was legit. They asked me to do an interview about one of my YouTube covers of a FERGIE song.
Since high school, I have always been a die hard Fergie fan. I love that she was in a cool band, that she is a powerful female, and a sassy singer AND rapper. I love her so much! Then they start asking me questions about Fergie, and after that, they surprised me with a video of FERGIE WATCHING ME SING. The video starts out with her saying “Oh! Stacey Kay, I know her”… um excuse me?? Fergie KNOWS ME??? She then goes on to give me wonderful compliments, and even says “WIG SNATCHED”. It was the best moment of my life! What are you currently working on creatively? I decided to start a new chapter in my life and I’ve started a PODCAST with my best friend in the world, who also happens to be my sister! Our podcast is a comedy called “I Have To Call My Sister”. We talk about things like body positivity/ what it’s like to have body issues, anxiety, depression, relationships, the music industry, being on a reality TV show, the LGBTQ+ community.
Our discussions on the podcast are always honest, relatable, and we tell really embarrassing stories. We hold nothing back! You can find the new podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify! Our website is www.ihavetocallmysister.com :)
