The Case Against Abortion

I saw this video on Randy Alcorn's blog and had to share it. I can't imagine how anyone can look at these images and say that abortion doesn't kill a human being.

Fourth Thursday in Lent 2011

Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?" And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. ~ Luke 12:41-46 (ESV)

Lord God, Jesus will return at a time no one knows. Don't let me be lazy—give me the help of the Holy Spirit to be doing Your work always so that when the end comes, I am ready. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Fourth Wednesday in Lent 2011

"Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and recline at table'? Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'" ~ Luke 17:7-10 (ESV)

Heavenly Father, why do I sometimes think that I've done enough—I deserve some thanks and some rest? I know I will receive my reward and my rest through eternity with You. Help me to continue to do my duty to You with love and joy and gratitude. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Third Tuesday in Lent 2011

"What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I go, sir,' but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him. ~ Matthew 21:28-32 (ESV)

Holy Lord God, I say I will do Your will, and I mean it—but I don't always follow through. Instead I fall into sin and disobedience. Lead me into the vineyard, Lord, to do Your work. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Conversations about the Future of Publishing

In the last couple of weeks, Barry Eisler, Joe Konrath, and Dean Wesley Smith have been discussing epublishing and self-publishing after Barry turned down a half million dollar publishing contract to self-publish. All three are best-selling traditionally published authors making the leap to self-publishing.

You can follow the conversations on the authors' blogs:

Ebooks and Self-Publishing: A Conversation Between Authors Barry Eisler and Joe Konrath was posted on March 19, 2011 on both authors' blogs:

Barry Eisler's The Heart of the Matter

Joe Konrath's A Newbie's Guide to Publishing

On March 25th, Dean Wesley Smith entered he conversation on his blog:

The Writings and Opinions of Dean Wesley Smith

The conversations are extremely long and some of the language is, shall we say, colorful. However, the dialogue demonstrates the dramatic changes taking place in publishing today.

Third Monday in Lent 2011

"For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' ~ Matthew 25:14-30 (ESV)

Almighty God, I long to hear the words "Well done, good and faithful servant" from You. Guide me by the Holy Spirit to use all the talents You have given me to serve and glorify You. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Third Sunday in Lent 2011

Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons," while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first." As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!" But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" ~ Luke 11:14-28 (ESV)

Lord, may I be blessed by hearing the Word of God and keeping it. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with the Holy Ghost, now and forever, world without end. Amen.

Third Saturday in Lent 2011

There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish." ~ Luke 13:1-5 (ESV)

Heavenly Father, if You judge me on my deeds, I will perish, for Your Word tells us the wages of sin is death. But when I repent and turn to You, the Blood of Jesus washes away my sin, and You grant me forgiveness and eternal life. Make me always penitent and grateful for Your grace and mercy. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Third Friday in Lent 2011

And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." ~ Mark 4:30-32 (ESV)

Thank You, Lord, for the growth of Your Kingdom and especially thank You that I am part of it. Help me to spread Your Gospel to others so they, too, become part of Your eternal Kingdom. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.

If you are a writer wanting to better understand your publishing options, visit Lisa's blog and read the entire series. They are all linked from my post.

In my Self-Publishing Primer, I differentiate between subsidy publishing and self-publishing, but recently the distinctions between the two are beginning to blur. Find out in the latest in my guest post.
