Happy Mother's Day

Flowers Happy Mother's Day!

If you're a mother, I wish you a blessed day being honored and pampered by your children.

If you have a mother to honor and pamper today, I wish you love and joy shared with her.

If your mother is no longer here, I wish you loving memories of the time you had together.

I've shared memories of my own mother in previous posts, including these favorites:

A Different … and Special … Family Vacation

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. ~ Exodus 20:12 (ESV)

ALMIGHTY God, we give you thanks for mothers who love and care for us and entrust our mothers who are so dear to us to thy never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come; knowing that thou art doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

National Day of Prayer 2011

[image error]The theme of the 60th annual celebration of the National Day of Prayer today is "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

The official verse for this year is Psalm 91:2:

"I will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." ~ Psalm 91:2

There are many other references in the Bible to God as our fortress, including the following verses:

"The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge." ~ Psalm 18:2

"For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me." ~ Psalm 31:3

"The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress." ~ Psalm 46:7 & 46:11

"He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken." ~ Psalm 62:2 & 62:6

"The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer." ~ 2 Samuel 22:2

Join Americans around the country today praying for our country, using the prayer of your choice or this one written for today by Joni Eareckson Tada, Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer 2011:

Almighty God, you are our Mighty Fortress, our refuge and the God in whom we place our trust. As our nation faces great distress and uncertainty, we ask your Holy Spirit to fall afresh upon your people — convict us of sin and inflame within us a passion to pray for our land and its people. Grant the leaders of our country an awareness of their desperate need of wisdom and salvation in You until sin becomes a reproach to all and righteousness exalts this nation.

Protect and defend us against our enemies and may the cause of Christ always prevail in our schools, courts, homes, and churches. Lord God, send a spirit of revival and may it begin in our own hearts.

Remember America, we pray. Remember the foundations on which this country was built. Remember the prayers of our nation's fathers and mothers, and do not forget us in our time of need.

In the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Enjoy this musical video of Martin Luther's magnificent hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."

Stroke Awareness Month 2011

May is . Stroke, also known as brain attack, is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of long-term disability. A stroke is a medical emergency that can happen to anyone. Immediate treatment is critical to survival, so learn the symptoms and maybe save a life.

I know a lot about stroke. I went through one myself, and my husband has had a mini-stroke (transient ischemic attack, TIA). I recognized the symptoms and called EMS immediately, and Jack recovered quickly. You can read more about my experiences and what I've learned about stroke in the following posts:

May Is Stroke Awareness Month
National Stroke Awareness Month: My Stroke – the Beginning
National Stroke Awareness Month: My Stroke – The Next Three Days
National Stroke Awareness Month: My Stroke – the Aftermath
National Stroke Awareness Month: Stroke Risk Factors and Symptoms

I even wrote a novel, Stroke of Luck, with a fictional storyline based on my experiences.

Yet, I've learned a lot more in the video below, Brain Attack: A Stroke Survival Guide, with Al Roker. There are several blank sections where there were ads when it was on TV—but it's worth waiting through the gaps to see the entire show.

If you read—and enjoyed!—Dream or Destiny, I'd be delighted if you voted your rating or left a comment about the book.

Easter Sunday 2011

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God." ~ John 3:1-21 (ESV)

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the opportunity to be born again of the Spirit. Thank You for Jesus' sacrifice for my sins. Thank You for Your grace and mercy. Lead me to always live as Your child. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, who died and rose again and ascended into Heaven. Amen.

Holy Saturday 2011

"There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house—for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'" ~ Luke 16:19-31 (ESV)

Lord God Almighty, You have told us what we must do to join Lazarus at Abraham's bosom: Love You with our heart and mind and soul and love our neighbors as ourselves. If we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and follow in His ways, we will spend eternity with You—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost—in Heaven. Keep me always in Your paths, Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.
