Why Does Michael Rubens’ Fascinating Blog Keep Disappearing?
Michael Rubens doesn’t know. Apparently there is some sort of bug within this WordPress theme, leading to some sort of server overload, leading to my webhost politely informing me that they are going to suspend my account for a violation of the Terms of Service, leading to my blog disappearing. Then the world descends into dystopic chaos. Then my brother-in-law does things that make my blog come back. So I’m back. The world should be okay now.

Sons of 613 named one of best YA novels of 2012 by Kirkus!
I’m very pleased and flattered that Kirkus Reviews has selected Sons of the 613 as one of the best YA novels for 2012. And a big thanks to Tablet Magazine as well, which also put Sons on their best of 2012 list.

Review of Sons of the 613 in Books for Kids blogs.
“Rubens’ narrative is drop-dead LOL comedic writing, but it is far more than just that. …It’s a offbeat but real-world coming of age story that ultimately hits home.”

Very nice essay/review regarding Sons of the 613
A few weeks back I spotted a nice review of my first book, The Sheriff of Yrnameer, on Maria Mankin’s blog Books J’Adore. I contacted her and thanked her and talked up my new book, Sons of the 613, and she was kind enough to read it and review it as well. It’s somewhat more than a review — wrapped around it and informing it is a rather touching essay about her relationship with her brother, and I think many people will recognize the complexities of the dynamic she describes, the tension that exists within a relationship that is profound and loving, yet where the weightiest things remain unspoken.

A Poem for My Spritely Neighbors
Untrammeled
Your ebullient voices rising and swirling into the late Brooklyn night
laughter dancing on wings
rudely vital shouts that declare, I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive
oh to have such youth.
No, wait. Oh, to have a massive fleet of remote-controlled, hovering cow anuses from which to rain down a literal shitstorm on your drunkass, stoned, inconsiderate heads so you’ll all STFU already — it’s nearly 4am!
John Baldessari + Tom Waits = edutainmentastical
A fantastically fantastic short film about artist John Baldessari.
