(Re?)launch

I have had this website for a little while now, and I haven't really used it to anything like its full effect, due, in part, to a variety of technical difficulties.  Starting pretty much right now, however, I plan to start at least updating this journal on a regular basis.  I will keep crossposting the entries to my LiveJournal (manually, for the time being), so you can feel free to follow me there if you'd rather.  Comments are welcome either place.

For those of you who've been following along,

"The Worm that Gnaws" at Pseudopod

My short story "The Worm that Gnaws" is up on Pseudopod as of Friday. I'm always excited whenever I get to see a story of mine in print, but honestly I've seldom ever been as excited as this. I love audio fiction, and Pseudopod does it as well as anyone, and the narrator they got for my story (Ian Stuart) is absolutely perfect. Getting to hear him bring my story to life (and I really think that's what he does) made me extremely happy.

I don't read nearly as many short fiction periodicals as I kno

Prolegomenon

For those of you who don’t already know who I am and what I do:

My name is Orrin Grey.  I write weird and ghostly stories, but it has never been my primary intention to scare anyone.  Above all I want the stories I write to be fun, and what’s fun for me happens to be curses and ghosts and monsters.  Several people have called what I write “weird adventure,” and I like the ring of that, so that’s what I use as often as not.

2009 has been a good year for me so far.  My first chapbook novella, THE MY

P. Craig Russell does “From Beyond”

As those of you who follow me on Goodreads are probably already aware, I’ve been on a P. Craig Russell kick lately.  But one of the most interesting things I’ve read by him is something that I can’t really talk about on Goodreads, so I thought I’d talk about it here: his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s story “From Beyond.”

“From Beyond” is, for a Lovecraft story, unusually suited to being adapted to visual forms, and Russell’s art is perhaps uniquely suited to capturing the bizarre fauna of the in

Post ConQuest

In spite of a brief scare that I might be coming down with something prior to the con, I made it to ConQuest without a hitch.  While there, I got to meet several people, including some folks from KaCSFFS, and I got to have dinner with Ellen Datlow and Rich Horton!  Many thanks to both of them for being so generous with their time to someone they didn’t really know.

Events conspired to make me miss out on some of the con, including all of Sunday (which is too bad, since I hear I missed a good pane

ConQuest

This weekend, I will be attending ConQuest in Kansas City.  Not as a guest or anything, just to gawk and make a nuisance of myself.  If anyone else from the area is going, don’t hesitate to drop me a line.

Welcome to my brand new, shiny author website.  I suppose it’s time for me to do that eternally-awkward self-introduction thing.  Most of you who’re likely to be reading this already know who I am, but in case some don’t, I’m Orrin Grey, I’m a writer, and I’m not really dead.  (Or am I?!)

I’ve been having a pretty good year, so far.  THE MYSTERIOUS FLAME, my first chapbook novella, was just published and has been selling like gangbusters (which, I’m told, sell pretty well).   The anthology BOUND

When it Rains...

Since my last post, I've actually placed a couple more stories, one at Innsmouth Free Press and one at All Hallows. The latter makes me especially happy, because it's a market I've always wanted to get into (though this is actually the first time I've ever tried).

Shirley Jackson Nomination!

Bound for Evil, which contains my short story "The Reading Room," was nominated for the 2008 Shirley Jackson Awards for best anthology. This is good news, both for me and for Tom English, who couldn't deserve it more.

The Shirley Jackson Awards are, in only their second year, my favorite of the various genre awards and the ones that most often honor the books that I love most. As evidence of that, the rest of the stuff on the 2008 ballot with which I am familiar is almost universally excellent, including a nomination for Daryl Gregory's amazing Pandemonium, which I've been talking up.

Congratulations to everyone who was nominated, and you can expect to see a lot of the titles from that ballot showing up on my "to read" list in the near future.

So Far, So Good

I learned last night that I sold my story "The Worm that Gnaws" to Pseudopod. I'm very excited about this for a number of reasons, including because Pseudopod is awesome and because I think the story will benefit very much from being read aloud. I will, of course, post a link when the story is actually available.

I'm also excited because this means I've got four stories "in press" (the fancy way of saying "sold, but not yet published"), which is the most I've ever had at one time. The others include some things I've not mentioned here yet.

First off, "The Clowder" is still coming out in the second volume of Cat Tales, due out sometime in the future from Wildside Press. That one's been in press for quite awhile now.

More recently, my necromancer-superhero tale "The Power of the Dead" found a home at A Thousand Faces, a quarterly mag of superhero stories, where it'll probably be appearing sometime around October. Finally, my story "Midnight in the Wax Museum" should be appearing in the fourth issue of Dark Worlds magazine. More on all of those as it becomes available.

On top of all of that, The Mysterious Flame is still selling well, and I'm told that we're already down to less than 25 copies remaining! So, in all, it's been a good year for me so far on the publishing front. Now if I could just start actually writing more new stuff...
