Double Feature

Today is a double-feature of art, to make up for any days that I might have missed or might yet miss in the future (see what I did there?). First up, we have a bunch of very nice Phantom Stranger covers by the likes of Mike Mignola and Neal Adams, among others.

Then there's this post from the previously-mentioned Golden Age Comic Book Stories 'blog featuring vintage Weird Tales art by Boris Dolgov, much of which seems distinctly appropriate to the season.

Burke & Hare

I'm almost positive that I've talked about this before, in other places, but it's the sort of thing that merits revisiting, so: John Landis is making a Burke & Hare movie starring David Tennant and Simon Pegg.

Having never seen any of the recent Doctor Whos, I'm only familiar with Tennant through some of his film roles (notably his bit in the fourth Harry Potter movie), but this sounds like a great combination, and I'm excited to see Landis in the director's seat.

If Only: Solomon Kane

Over the weekend my roommate gave me a copy of the Saga of Solomon Kane as an early birthday present. More on that later (when I get more of it read), but it got me thinking about a post I've been meaning to make for a long time, and one that seems suitably Halloween-y to me.

There's a Solomon Kane movie coming soon, the trailer of which has recently shown up. The reaction from the fans I've seen has been less-than-enthusiastic. I'm going to hold out hope, albeit tinged with some...

Essence of Dry-Roasted Peanut

A lot of the people I know on the Intertubes are already big fans of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, but I've never tried any of their stuff. The thing that might make me change that is that they've released a line of Hellboy-themed scents.

As tempting as they all are, and as much as I love that picture of a frog in a teacup, I think I'd probably have to try the Trevor Bruttenholm if I were to order one.

Seriously, though, how come the Hellboy scent doesn't smell like a dry-roasted peanut?

Trick 'r Treat

As the sharp-eyed among you may've noticed, I missed posting yesterday due to some unforeseen circumstances, but I'm here now with a (relatively) in-depth post about Trick 'r Treat. (Emphatically not to be confused with Trick or Treat.)

I had already been hearing buzz about Trick 'r Treat before I first saw the trailer on the 300 DVD. That would have been, what, two years ago? More? And I've been hearing nothing but great stuff ever since. In the intervening years, as Trick 'r Treat

"I think this post's mostly filler…"

After a couple of years of waiting, I finally got to see Trick 'r Treat tonight. Short review: It was great!

I'll have more to say about it (hopefully) tomorrow.

IFP Fall 2009

Innsmouth Free Press, where I occasionally write reviews and where my story "Nature vs. Nurture" is forthcoming, has their Fall 2009 issue up. I haven't gotten a chance to read much of it yet, but it features fiction from the likes of Mary Robinette Kowal, Berrien C. Henderson, and Matthew Bey.

Speaking of Matthew Bey, his story "Hometown Horrible" is available on Pseudopod. It's a great story and one that I've been meaning to plug for awhile, and this seemed like a good opportunity.

Pulp Sundays (also Fridays)

Francesco Francavilla is one of my very favorite artists around, and he keeps a regularly amazing weekly 'blog called Pulp Sunday. It is never ever a bad thing. However, it gets extra awesome whenever he does one of his month-long special features, such as past instances involving witches, golden age sci-fi movie posters, and mad doctors (scroll down a bit for that last one).

In honor of October this year he's doing not one but two great series, one of re-imagined Hammer film posters (on...

Honorable Mention!

I scored my first ever honorable mention from Ellen Datlow for "The Reading Room," which is in Bound for Evil! There are only fifty honorable mentions in the new Best Horror of the Year, and I didn't make it into that august grouping, but she posted a full list to the Night Shade Books forum, which includes my story. Also included are a whopping ten other stories from Bound for Evil, several of them by awesome folks of my own acquaintance.

Beasts of Burden

If all goes according to plan, I'll be posting more about the Dark Horse Book of … books as the month goes on, but one of the (several) high points of those titles were the Beasts of Burden strips by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson. Unique takes on the paranormal detective story, they were a big hit and are getting their own series. You can read three of the short stories here, here, and here, and an extra-long preview of the first issue of the of the new series here.

Also, this cover is my...
