M3: Reflections on the Massachusetts Marathon Massacre

God do we Americans love spectacle… we just eat it up. Whether it’s a North Korean standoff, Mexican drug lords, or two young Chechen disaffected intellectuals roaming the streets of Cambridge ready to die rather than be tortured at Guantanamo, we just love spectacle and melodrama. Hollywood can’t keep up with reality! Actually, it can. It does. It creates our reality. You remember ARGO, right? Art is life. Well, most of our daily melodrama is produced and brought to you in large measure by Hollywood, the same ownership, the same investments, the same power players controlling the news, the press, the movies and the music.

A Cautionary Note on Commerce and Service in Altai Krai
I am a sick man. … I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man… I used to be in the government service, but am no longer. I was a spiteful official. I was rude and took pleasure in being so… When petitioners used to come for information to the table at which I sat, I used to grind my teeth at them, and felt intense enjoyment when I succeeded in making anybody unhappy. I almost did succeed. For the most part they were all timid people — of course, they were petitioners. (Dostoyevsky, Notes From Underground)
According to a recent Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report from the World Economic Forum, Russia was voted among the top three most-unfriendly countries for tourists! Is this surprising?

Sometimes the world makes sense… but most often it does not. This is particularly true when you have trouble believing the accepted narrative. The correct word is not conspiracy or paranoia, it is simply by DerektheRed…
The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.

We in the West took the Aristotelian project way too seriously. We shoved a rocket up its ass, and now we wonder why there are drones flying overhead. We will be forever watching our backs because of that dumb move!

Twilight of the Standard Model

William Duncan, a good friend of ours who blogs at Off the Grid in Minneapolis, has touched on some truly divine issues in this recent offering. Does science spell its own doom? Does the standard-model of scientific reasoning, the unquestioned faith in the syllogism and analytical deconstruction ultimately lead one over the proverbial cliff, or just back to the unforgiving and fleshy reality of our natures? Let us follow Mr. Duncan, where few men (or women) have gone before. Perhaps only Nietzsche has gone further. kC

Ontological Reciprocity

by Marvin Bram
The question is this: how might the material things of the world answer us?
It may be necessary to take an unfortunately condescending remark seriously: Schopenhauer says that our normal position toward reality is “that natural and childlike realism in which we are all born, and which qualifies one for every possible thing except philosophy.”
