Whither the Madness of American Exceptionalism?

We have yet again, a superb offering from one of our favorites; a man who has also supported our film project, Veronika: The Siberian’s Tale.  It seems to me that DA (James) understands the circle of reciprocity that binds people together in more intimate social settings like ours.  I think of this blog, and all who read her regularly, as affine relations — close to me in soul and psyche.  Again, I ask each of you to find it somewhere within yourselves the capacity to move our mission forward. A small pledge to our project will do more to silence the embarrassing chest-beating of American Exceptionalism than a million essays or Op-ed pieces in the NY Times.  The story of Veronika exposes the farce of such status-driven thinking, and the psychosis of the mad rush to the top of the mountain of fattened prosperity.  Just click the beautiful photo of Altai above to openKickstarter and make a pledge.

On Sharing The Myth and The Ritual

There comes a time in everyman and woman’s life when they must evaluate the worth of the life they have lived.  We are most often forced these days to weigh that value in terms of success and failure. Those terms are born of, and entrenched in, a propaganda war that is waged daily by those who have domesticated us, enslaving us within their zero-sum game of winners and losers.  I have lived my life by and large according to the rules and the expectations of that game. I understand clearly the cost of our enslavement, and that the chains that bind us have become nearly hardwired into our self-understanding.  Yet, they are not.  True, we live in a world that relishes competition, honoring success with rewards and material acquisition, so that he (or she) who dies with the most toys is declared the winner.

The concept of sharing is not really in the vocabulary or the noosphere, it is not particularly encouraged or admired in this environment; the rules of the game militate against it.  I have come to understand this the hard way, by running the gauntlet.  It’s left its bruises on me, but I am still here, and I look back with some shame and some bitterness, and yes, even pride at having come out the other side alive.  I have tried to share more over the past couple of years, and I trust you have enjoyed some of that here on the blog.  And I will continue to do so as often as I can.  It is not a noble act; it is just a human act… inherently human, passed down to us legitimately through our ancient Pleistocene heritage.  Now, I am inviting all of you to SHARE with me in the project of bringing the story of Veronika, of Siberia, of Altai, to life.  The funds are not for me; the money goes to pay all of those still entrenched in the system, because this world still works by and large for profit.  Crowd-funding is a way of sharing what we can, so that we can share the burden as well as the results of the effort.  Like our primal ancestors, we too need myth and ritual (James’ post last week notwithstanding!). Let the making of the movie Veronika be a labor of love that we share together. Veronika needs you; and maybe… just maybe, you need her. Veronika… the Movie!

That’s right my fellow bloggers, friends, contributors, and followers.  We are already ‘location scouting’ and planning our shooting schedule for turning VERONIKA: The Siberian’s Tale into a dramatic full-length motion picture.  We begin this journey, with trepidation, one baby step at a time. That first step is opening a crowd-funding campaign to raise enough money to produce a high quality professional dramatic short-teaser video.  Using either Kickstarter or IndieGogo, we will kickoff the campaign within the next two weeks.  We have a solid production company lined up in Moscow, as well as a director and crew.  We are anticipating a well known actor to take one of the key roles in the teaser and film (more on that later).  

I am notifying all of you because I will need all the financial support I can get.  And, you can bet, not only am I volunteering all of my time to this project, but I will be putting a good chunk of my own money into making it successful as well.  I am asking you all here now to please consider giving even a ten dollar ($10) pledge to make this teaser video a reality. Of course, there will be gifts, prizes, etc. at each donation level, including signed screenplays, copies of my novel, professionally manufactured teaser dvd’s, on-film credits, and replicas of Sergei’s grandmother’s mythic-Griffin amulet.  

Once the teaser is complete and wrapped, I will personally be hand delivering it to large production studios, and screening it at festivals in Moscow, Europe and the USA. I will do everything in my power to find a major house or a solid independent producer who will turn the teaser into a full length dramatic motion picture. I will use all of my old connections, and some new ones, to find the right way through the gauntlet to the full story movie production and big screen release of VERONIKA: The Siberian’s Tale.

The essence of art lies in generating the willing suspension of disbelief in the viewers, and/or participants; this being so, American culture, indeed the world, has this pretty much down pat, Rembrandt has nothing on our modern spin-meisters and cultural trend-setters.. Examples are so abundant, and denial is so ingrained into our culture, that one hardly knows where to start; it is, as they say, a target rich environment.

Fittingly, at least from our perspective today, the Great Corporate Takeover of 2022, which established our current Corporate State of America – the CSA – was no big deal. The ground had been prepared for at least the previous 40 years by Democratic and Republican administrations alike, gradually transforming the then nominally democratic federal republic into the model of modern corporate efficiency it has become today.

Where the Wasteland Ends

James Howard Kunstler move over, our own Disaffected has stepped forward to read the tea leaves of the present day and provide us a window on our likely future, a crystal ball reflection of what is to come.  For that matter, the Gospel of John may need to take second fiddle to this new Rasputin soloist of ours.  A great prognosticator is nothing if not self confident. And we see such confidence jumping from the page in DA’s unabashed forecast. Truly our world is in the midst of the greatest of transformations, a crisis of immense proportions and on multiple fronts, economic, financial, political, social, climatological, ecological — and all on a grand global platform.  This is the real meaning of the word-phrase “GLOBALIZATION.”  It is the globalized suffering of humankind, the planet, and all that surrounds and supports us. DA is highly evocative and critical in his observations; something lacking in much of American society today. Enjoy his first installment.  The second half will come in a few days time. (kC)
