Confessions of a YA horror writer

Today I'm delighted to welcome author Ace Antonio Hall to my blog, whose YA horror novel, The Confessions of Sylva Slasher, is touring the internet at the moment. Since I enjoy horror novels, and I enjoy reading YA fiction, I thought Iit might be interesting to ask what challenges an author might find in writing horror for young adults. Ace Antonio Hall's response is a great essay on the whole process of writing, editing and being published. It should be required reading for anyone hoping to...

Reviewing books while a dog helps me type
We've borrowed a dog for the weekend. He's very sweet. Having finally decided he doesn't need to follow my footsteps everywhere (and cry outside the bathroom), he's taken to sitting by the patio door watching birds and squirrels play. I have to leave the door slightly open for him, else I'll end up returning him to his owners with a seriously bruised nose--maybe with a few more days he'd realize you can't chase squirrels through the glass. But at least the weather's warmer and the wind's not...

A child's eye view of culture and tradition

I'm delighted to welcome Subhash Kommuru, author of the children's book, Bargad, to my blog today. As a fellow immigrant to the US, I was curious about what sort of problems the author might face, introducing American children to their Indian cultural heritage in fiction, and I'm delighted to share his reply here. Thank you so much for being a guest on my blog, Subhash. And readers, don't forget to to read to the end of the this post where there's a great giveaway.

Today I'm delighted to welcome author Violet Patterson to my blog. She's written a wonderful series of books--the Storm Sullivan Saga. She's living the dream, maybe, with her seers, seraphs and immortals, and downloads, and eager readers. But... well... you'll see...
Over to you Violet, and thank you for offering such a fascinating insight into the world of publishi...

Fiction, Non-fiction, Economics (no-o-o-o-o) and more
Yes, I'm a mathematician. No, I don't like statistics, probability or economics. So I'm quite glad the book we read for our book group this month didn't betray its meaning in its title. Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow is clearly a book whose title and cover were designed to sell, and they succeeded; it's an international bestseller. But it's also a thoroughly good read, with some great things to say not just about the psychology of thought and decision making, but also about how logi...

Meet the Dragons

Have you met them yet? Did you know the latest book has just come out? And are you an addict--addicted to dragons? I know I am and I was thrilled to read the first book in this series while flying (not by dragon) to the US after a trip to visit family in England. Read on and look for an excerpt from that wonderful Redheart that so intrigued me, and don't miss the giveaway below, hosted by I am a Reader Not a W...
