Can You Really Sell Your Writing Output On Radio?

Source by Jim Green

I had never given the matter much thought in the past but after an experience I enjoyed lately, I am now rather of the opinion that you can.

It happened this way…

Coinciding with the launch of my latest book ‘Your Retirement Masterplan’ (How To Books ISBN 1857039874) I participated in eleven 10/15 minute live interviews on local radio over a period of just five days.

These promotional interviews were arranged by my publisher’s media consultancy and I didn’t require to visit a single studio to take part; they were all conducted over the telephone, sitting at my desk at home.

Towards the end of the first interview I was conscious of the fact that I had yet to plug the distribution channels for my book.

The presenter beat me to it: ‘In five seconds, where can listeners buy your book?’ Before I could reply he added, ‘Can they order it online?’

‘Yes,’ I said, ‘at Amazon.co.uk’

In the ten subsequent interviews I made a point of ending my spiel with the publisher’s name together with availability at bookstores but I always finished with, ‘…and online at Amazon.co.uk.’

Now here’s the interesting part: after the first five sessions I checked out the Amazon.co.uk website to discover that this newly published title had jumped 35 places in the bestseller list for its genre; I checked again after the final interview and it had jumped again but this time by 329 places. In effect, in just a few days it had leapt from position 558 to 194 out of 3123 competing titles.

More than mere coincidence methinks…because books don’t climb the bestseller lists on Amazon unless they are selling in quantity.

So what if you self-publish your output and you don’t have a publicist to arrange radio interviews? Does that mean you are excluded?

No way; I have self-published several books in the past and managed my own promotion.

Here is what you do…

1. Wherever you live in the world you’ll find that the majority of local radio stations are banded together into a single group for cost-effectiveness;

2. Identify the controlling group;

3. Visit the corporate website containing links to all subsidiaries;

4. Pick out those stations within a 500/1000 mile orbit;

5. Visit each local station website individually;

6. Scan the daily programming schedules;

7. Highlight those shows that might identify with the topic of your book;

8. Note the presenter’s name;

9. Email him/her with a well-couched request for a live interview;

10. Follow that up with an identical snail mail request;

11. Follow that up with a telephone call (you’ll get to speak to someone in authority);

12. You know your topic inside out; speak up with confidence and you’ll get your interview; maybe not straightaway but, if you sell yourself and your project professionally, you’ll be logged into and up-and-coming slot in the station scheduling.

Go for it…it’s free!

Postscript: Those eleven live interviews did more than sell books on radio – they resulted in several direct invitations to repeat my pitch on local television.

MILKING INCREMENTAL INCOME STREAMS AS AN AUTHOR

As your book(s) become available online and offline your reputation as an expert in your particular subject will flourish. This brings with it additional opportunities for attracting incremental income; opportunities such as…

1. Public speaking engagements;

2. Book reviewing;

3. Magazine article contributions;

4. Foreign translations of your work;

5. Book club sales;

6. Public Lending Right (PLR); you get paid every time some borrows your book from a public lending library;

7. Fees under licence (when another publisher reproduces your work);

8. Broadcasting rights;

9. Audio tape and disc rights.

The fees you earn are incremental to your book royalties and they soon mount up over a period of time. My new creative writing course ‘Secrets to Churning Out Bestsellers’ contains several chapters on how to milk these additional income streams. http://www.1st-creative-writing-course.com

Famous People From Luton

Source by Susan J Ashby

Luton is best known for the London Luton Airport, the Luton Town Football Club, the University of Bedfordshire and the Luton Carnival held every May. But there are also a number of famous and accomplished people who have a strong connection to Luton, especially in the fields of entertainment, sports and literature. Here is a sampling of some of them.

1. Arthur Hailey

The novelist, Arthur Hailey, was born in Luton on April 5, 1920 and died on November 24, 2004. From 1939 to 1947, he served in the Royal Air Force and later moved to Canada and then to California. His novels, which are set in various industrial and commercial settings, are known for their dramatic human conflict and thoroughly researched information.

Hailey was such a good novelist that many of his books became immediate best-sellers. Many of them reached the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Overall, his books have sold over 170 million copies around the world and have been translated into 40 languages. Some of his books were made into movies, including “Airport,” which became a blockbuster. His novel “Hotel” also became a long-running TV series.

When writing a book, Hailey would spend a year on research, six months studying his notes and about 18 months writing. For these reasons, his books had a strong sense of realism that attracted many readers.

2. John Badham

Film director John Badham was born in Luton on August 25, 1939. He was raised in Alabama in the United States and became an American citizen in 1946. A graduate of Yale University, his breakthrough movie was the smash blockbuster “Saturday Night Fever” which introduced the world to John Travolta in 1977.

Badham has numerous credits in both film and television. His most famous films include Saturday Night Fever (1977), Dracula (1979), Whose Life Is It Anyway? (1981), Blue Thunder (1983), WarGames (1983), American Flyers (1985), Short Circuit (1986). Stakeout (1987), The Hard Way (1991), Point of No Return (1993), Drop Zone (1994). Nick of Time (1995), Incognito (1997) and The Jack Bull (1999).

3. Phil Read

He was born as Phillip William Read in Luton on January 1, 1939. He rose to prominence as Phil Read, a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer who carried the impressive nickname “The Prince of Speed.” He distinguished himself as the first man to win world championships in the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc classes.

Read first rose to prominence in 1964 when he won the world title in the 250cc class, a feat which bestowed on Yamaha its first world title. Overall, he notched 50 Grand Prix Tour victories from 1963 to 1976. He was ranked number one in the world seven times in either the 125cc or 250cc class, including 1964, 1965, 1968 (both 125cc and 250cc), 1971, 1973 and 1974. His carried the colors of Yamaha in his first five number one rankings and MV Augusta in 1973 and 1974.

Read’s final race was in 1982 at age 43 when he participated in the Isle of Man TT. He was named by the FIM as a Grand Prix “Legend” in 2002.

4. Colin Salmon

Born in Luton in 1952, the 6’4″ Colin Salmon is best known for his role in three James Bond films where he played the fictional character Charles Robinson opposite Pierce Brosnan as Bond.

When Brosnan left the Bond franchise, Salmon emerged as a strong contender as his replacement as James Bond, even getting Brosnan’s endorsement as his preferred successor. However, he did not get the part. Salmon would have been the first black actor to portray Bond, who was described by author Ian Fleming as a half Scottish, half Swiss Caucasian male.

In his latest role, Salmon played the role of David Tyrel in the Sky One UK television series Hex. He was also Dr. Rowan Dunlop in Series 8 of ITV UK Television series Bad Girls. He also appeared in the sixth episode of the BBC Three comedy, Little Miss Jocelyn, where he played himself.

Salmon’s most popular films include Match Point (2005) as Ian; Alien vs. Predator (2004) as Maxwell Stafford; Trial & Retribution VIII (2004) as Colin Thorpe; Keen Eddie (2003-2004) as Supt. The Highlights of "New Moon" – The Twilight Saga

Source by Sarah De Lara

After we fell in love with Edward and Bella in the first series “Twilight,” the next series is now in the cinemas entitled, New Moon the Twilight Saga. The second series of Twilight has a lot of twist and more surprise characters.

The New Moon is a film adaptation from the book by Stephanie Meyer. It is a second fantasy-romance novel which is the part two of the Twilight series. According to Meyer, the word New Moon is refers to the darkest phase of lunar cycle, which is pertaining to Bella’s life. The novel was originally released in hardcover in 2006 following the successful publishing of Meyer’s debut novel, Twilight. Upon publication of the book, is moved quickly to the top of bestseller list and becoming one of the most anticipated book of the year. It became #1 on both the New York Times Best Seller and USA Today’s Top 150 Bestsellers. The new Moon has already been translated into many languages. Even though many people already bought the novel book, they still want to see the film adaptation and of course to see the main characters, Edward and Bella on screen.

The story starts on Bella’s 18th birthday, when she unwrapped a gift and she gets a paper cut, which causes Edward’s adopted brother, Jasper, to be overwhelmed by her blood’s scent and attempt to kill her. To protect Bella, Edward decides to end their relationship, and Edward moved away from the Forks. Bella leaves heart-broken and depressed.

In the months that follow, Bella try to move-on by learning some activities such as motorcycle riding. She also seeks comfort in her deepening friendship with Jacob Black. Bella later discovers that Jacob is a werewolf and he and his fellow werewolf are protecting her from the vampires Laurent and Victoria, the latter of whom seeks revenge for her dead mate, James, whom Cullens killed in the first series.

Meanwhile, Bella tend to commit suicide because she think that Edward will hear her voice when she is in danger. Edward flees to Italy to provoke the Volturi, a vampire royalty who are capable of killing him. Alice and Bella rush to the Italy to save Edward, arriving just in time to stop him. When they return to Forks, Edward tells Bella that he has always loved her and only left Forks to protect her. She forgives him and Cullens vote in favor of Bella being transformed into vampire, to Edward’s dismay. However, Edward gives Bella an option: either she lets Carlisle change her after her graduation, or Edward will change her himself if Bella agrees to marry him.

Book Review – Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Source by Nathalie Himmelrich

Eat, Pray, Love has become the latest book for women in search of themselves since it was written in 2006. Since its film adaption staring Julia Roberts, which was released in 2010, it has gained even more popularity.

Summary

The book is the author's, Elizabeth Gilbert, memoir of her one year long trip through Italy, India and Bali. The book was published in 2006 and remained on the New York Times Best Seller list for almost 4 years and has printed over ten million copies.

More in detail

The author is 32 years old when, after her divorce and a rebound relationship, it becomes clear to her that she has not spend time alone since she became a young adult and started dating. She decides to take a year to herself where she is dedicating time to her own journey of finding three things: pleasure, devotion and balance.

She starts her travels in Rome, where she learns Italian, dives into Italian food and 'dolce far niente'. Next she journeys on to an ashram in India to devote her time to meditation and prayer. Her last segment is exploring Bali, where she had met an old medicine man on a previous travel who foretold her that she would lose all her money, get a divorce and come back to Bali. In this last stage she finds balance between spirituality, devotion, pleasure and love in the form of a Brazilian business owner.

Her yearlong travel was, luckily for her, paid in advance through a book deal from her publisher in New York, which made her a career as a highly paid freelance writer.

About the author

Elizabeth Gilbert is an American author who was born in 1969. She has written a few short stories, a novel, biography, two memoirs and worked on a couple of books as a sponsor. She worked as a journalist in New York for a few national magazines including SPIN, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Allure, and Travel + Leisure.

Film adaption

Columbia Pictures bought the film rights for 'Eat, Pray, Love' with Julia Roberts starring as Elizabeth Gilbert. The film was released in August 2010.

Personally I find it to be a really good adaption, given that it spans over 3 countries and includes endless experiences and insights that the producers had to pick from. I think Julia is a good choice to play Elizabeth, playing a real and honest woman on the way to find herself, which is not always easy and pleasant ride.

Recommendation

Both the film and the book are truly enjoyable. As to be expected, the book has many more details that the film can not capture so I would recommend reading the book first.

Now With Downloadable Audio Books – You Have No Excuses

Source by Elizabeth H Johnson

I love to read, I really do. Every day, I read the newspaper, my favorite blogs, and my e-mail. It seems that no matter how hard I try, I just cannot find the time to sit down and read a book. There are so many books I want to read too. As a matter of fact, I get a review of the latest great book on the best sellers list practically every time I talk to my mother. She also loves to read, but she actually has the time to sit down and read.

I guess It’s a matter of making the time, but I can look at the time it would take me to read a great book and then I think of all the other things I can accomplish with that time. Well, the book loses.

It’s really funny though. We try so hard to teach our children how important it is to read and how to enjoy a good book. Then we get to the point where we don’t even have the time to sit down and enjoy a book ourselves.

So now to the point. I have absolutely no excuse. Not any longer. You see I’ve always known that there were audio books.

When I was younger, I thought that audio books were for people who were sight impaired or for people who couldn’t read. And add to that, they were much more expensive than hardcover books.

Now that I am older, and wiser, I see that audio books are for everyone! Since I have made this personal discovery, I can listen to a good audio book while driving to work, or while driving my kids to their after school activities. I can even listen while mopping my floor. A good audio book can make even the most mundane chore seem a bit more enjoyable.

So if you see a book that you are just dying to read but have no time to actually sit down to read it, get it on audio. You’ll be amazed at how enjoyable listening to spoken audio books really is.

How To Make Your Book A Best Seller

Source by Barry Sheppard

Turn on the light. Unlock the door. Here are the amazing secrets that can no longer be kept in the dark!

So how do books become best sellers?

Usually hyped out of this world by the publisher, if he thinks he has a good seller on his hands. But we’re not talking publishers. We are going to talk about you. I have seen books which were amazing and sold zilch. Why not? No hype.

From here we are assuming you have written a book. A “How To” type book which you fully researched before you even wrote it because we all know, don’t we? You check out the potential market first!

You spent day and night for 2 weeks writing it and editing. Your finished manuscript is at the printers. You had someone design a “hip” cover with a well thought out marketing blurb on it. It will be ready in 2 weeks but the cover design and blurb is done first so we can promote it.

Find all the digital stuff you own that can be sent by email. Don’t own anything? Get onto some gurus and do some in depth interviews. Put a retail value on the interview. Make sure it’s worth money. This is what you are giving away. You are happy. The gurus are happy because they get plenty of exposure.

Everyone who buys your book now has a compelling reason to do so. They not only get the book for $9.95 or $19.95 but a ton of free information worth more than the book itself. So, they buy the physical book from Amazon They show you the receipt. They receive from you all the digital items by email.

Get everyone and his dog sending out emails re your forthcoming book being released on “X” date, with picture of front and back covers. Send out to everyone on your email list, friends, family, business and get the gurus who gave you the interview to do the same.

This is the simple strategy to use. You must believe in your book. It must worth the read. It must be informative. It needs to get talked about. Ask everyone to tell everyone they know or pass it on to their email lists. On and On. Give tons of free stuff to all those who buy it. Buy eBooks, reports and any digital things which you receive master rights to sell as you wish. I am sure you will find other methods and ways

You might even earn a lot of cash besides becoming a guru. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

It’s goodbye from me

That’s it folks

Barry

From the National Forensic Academy to a Local Case – Thriller Book Review

Source by Lance Winslow

If you love suspense thrillers, and love it when you find one that you just cannot put down then perhaps, I might recommend an excellent book to you? One in which politics, crime, investigative work, are twisted and turned, interwoven with expense and intrigue, which will have you on the edge of your seat for some 300 pages. Seriously, it is that good, and the book is:

“At Risk” by Patricia Cornwell; Berkley Books, New York, NY; 2006, ISBN: 978-0-425-21476-3

First, I’d surely like to recommend a few other books to you by Patricia Cornwell; Predators, Blow Fly, and Trace. Cornwell is a superb writer of suspenseful and thriller type novels, and has earned the right to appear on the New York Times Best Seller list multiple times, almost to the point now that every new book produced will end up there; perhaps a king of the genre or at least one of the few greats.

Although most do not like descriptive-ness of her writing, no one can deny the pure literary talent behind those words and visual imagery. In this book an investigator is attending the National Forensic Academy finds himself summoned back to Massachusetts by the District Attorney, who just happens to be running for governor. Part of the platform of this politician is an initiative to bring DNA into criminal investigations.

To prove this can be done, He is assigned a 29-year old case, which has gone completely unsolved. Imagine the pressure and the problems associated with this. About this time all hell breaks lose. Please consider reading this.

3 Tips That Make it Easy to Expertly Market Your Book

Source by Bob Burnham

Why do some books make it to the top of the bestsellers list while others fall far behind? The secret lies in a few tips that the experts use every day. Here are three expert marketing tips for you to use to launch your book to the top of the bestseller's list.

Book Expert Marketing Tip # 1 Craft a book title that compels people to buy

A book buying decision is made in less than 20 seconds. That's not much time to make an impression. Your strongest tool to making a favorable impression on a potential customer is actually the title of your book. The title has to be strong, it has to be searchable and contain key words, it also has to provide your potential customer a benefit. Wow, that's a lot to accomplish in a few words. Not to worry, with a little time, a little thought and help from friends and associates you can create a title that will sell your book.

Come up with multiple titles and run them by friends, family, and associates. Ask them which title is more dynamic and which title would invite them to make a purchase.

Book Expert Marketing Tip # 2 Use blogs and forums as marketing tools

There are blogs and forums dedicated to just about every subject under the sun from owning a Pug to making money on the stock market. Forum marketing is a little trick that the experts use. You can not actually use a forum to promote your book but you can include a link to your book in your forum signature. You can also direct people to articles that you've written that will help solve their problems, which will in turn lead them to your book.

Maybe you're already a frequent poster or contributor to a few relevant forums or blog site. If you are, be sure to include a link to your book's website in your signature. If you're not a forum member then choose two or three quality sites that relate to the topic of your book and become a member. Register, introduce yourself, create a signature and dedicate a certain amount of time each week to visit the site and contribute. If there are no blogs or forums available on your topic, start one!

Book Expert Marketing Tip # 3 Book Reviews

Book reviews are your 'testimonials'. They are the proof that your book is exactly what it claims to be and that you are indeed the expert on your topic of choice. Reviews are essential if you want to sell your book. Read 3 Secrets To Getting Rave Reviews for inside secrets to getting great book reviews.

If you decide to sell your book on Amazon, do not forget to ask people to post their reviews on the bookseller's site. Getting good reviews on Amazon can be tricky. Send your book to associates and ask them to read it and post a review on Amazon. You can email people that have purchased your book and ask for a review in exchange for a free product (you can offer them a free report on a similar topic that you've written or that you've obtained the rights to).

Effective book marketing does not have to be tricky or advanced, it just has to be organized and well thought out. Begin at the beginning with your book's title, take steps to get your name and your book out into the public, through ezines, press releases, and other promotional tools, and then take the time to get good reviews both on Amazon and elsewhere. They can make or break a sale!

The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon: A Review

Source by Holly Weiss

The Story of Beautiful Girl was released in May 2011 by Grand Central Publishing, a division of the Hatchett Group. Within two weeks, the book hit the New York Times best seller list.

How does society deal with those of us who cope with disabilities? How would you want to be treated if you had a disability? The Story of Beautiful Girl forces us to address these questions. More importantly, it gives us a glimpse into the innermost thoughts of those treated as "feeble-minded" in what was at the time an uncaring, ignorant society. Both captivating and heartbreaking, the book is meant to be savored, not merely read. Adeptly nuanced and originally wrought, the book explores our compassion and intolerance towards people different than ourselves.

In 1968, Martha, an elderly widow, answers a knock on her farmhouse door. On her doorstep are two escapees from the School for the Incurable and Feebleminded. Lynnie, a white woman with a developmental disability has just given birth to a baby girl. Protecting them is Homan, a deaf African American man. Lynnie is recaptured by the authorities, and Homan escapes. Lynnie whispers to Martha, "Hide her." Those two words launch us into the forty-year story of characters whose love surpasses the insurmountable obstacles they face. Although Beautiful Girl and Homan live apart for decades, the author masterfully intertwines their life stories, inner thoughts and the hope that sustains them.

Life returns to normal for no one in this thought-provoking book. Martha, who telephone rings only on December 24, when her former students call to arrange a visit on Christmas day, finds her life changed as she cares for baby Julia. The child draws people into Martha's life and gives her newfound purpose.

Rachel Simon, a nationally known public speaker, is the author of the critically acclaimed bestseller, Riding the Bus with My Sister . The memoir chronicles the year Ms. Simon spent accompanying her sister Beth, who is afflicted with an intellectual disability, on joyful bus rides through a city in Pennsylvania. Although this experience, the author gleaned an understanding of the inner life of the developmentally disabled. Haunted for years by the story of an unidentified, deaf African American man found wandering the streets in Chicago, Ms. Simons captures the essence of both in the novel she says, "Burst out of me like nothing before."

This reader (who has a physical disability) believes the feelings of those with disabilities remain a mystery to those outside of our sphere. Ms. Rosen convinces otherwise. The author's sensitivity to the world of the disabled comes from the personal experience of her sibling as well as interviews with people who had been wrongfully institutionalized and professionals who staff group homes. The book's deduction reads, "For those who were put away." Although Ms. Simon's awareness of the institutional life forms a backbone for the book, it is her insight into the indomitable spirit of the human soul that infuses The Story of Beautiful Girl with brilliance and honesty.

The book jacket brilliantly captures the bond between the characters. We see a silhouette of "Beautiful Girl, Lynnie" on the book cover. Feathers are imprinted on the inside cover. At the lovers' coming together in the cornfield a flying bird dropped a red feather, which they pressed together between their chests. "Red feathers are rare," says Lynnie's sister with which she is absolutely reunited. "If you find one, you should keep it forever." On the back cover, a child's hand reaches for a feather, sometimes symbolic of a long-awaited reunion.

Reading this book will change your perception of those which challenges different from your own and move you to a better place. Highly recommended.
