Serial Killers Add Extra Sense of Terror When They Cross State Lines

The fictional serial killer who I developed for my novel Compulsion fuel their twisted desires with a murder spree that takes them across a large part of our country. Many pit stops and restaurants become locations for scouting out the next potential victims. I developed this climatic tour of torture and fear in a way that would keep the readers in suspense and perhaps even with slightly racing hearts as they wonder when the carnage would end. As I reflected on this important development in the

Emily’s Crime Watch – Tip #3

Identity theft crime occurs when any individual acquires a piece of personal information without your knowledge and uses it to commit fraud at your expense. Identity theft crimes affected almost 10 million victims in 2008, which is an increase of 22% from the previous year. It has been estimated that 71% of fraud occurs within a week of stealing a victim’s personal information.

Fourth Amendment vs. Emily Stone

In my new book Compulsion, protagonist Emily Stone takes extensive measures to gather surveillance evidence against some of the worst criminals on our streets. She hides in her truck, the woods, or any other available cover to record the photographs and videos that will bring yet another pedophile, rapist, or murderer to justice. However, Emily is always walking a very fine line. As anyone who has a background in criminal justice or even has watched detective programs on television knows, a def

The True Meaning of "Compulsion"

Have you ever had a craving for a certain type of food? Perhaps an overwhelming urge to bungee jump? What causes us to feel these overwhelming feelings? You may feel that these are trivial examples of “testing fate,” but think about it. You’re probably rationalizing that while people get cravings or urges, they can control them.

Some can control it, others can’t. Many overeaters eat to the point of excess which jeopardizes their health. Many bungee jump, taking needless chances for that “extra a

Recent Reviews of Compulsion

A wild ride!
Jennifer Chase has written a deliciously twisted tale that will keep you turning page after page. From a title than draws you in from the get go to a plot line that rivets, Compulsion was simultaneously entertaining and insightful. Chase has a knack for placing the reader inside the tormented mind of the serial killer, you really get a sense for how these creeps think and what drives their bloodlust. The dialogue, the setting and the romantic subplots all artfully converge to provide

Profiles are Helpful, but Should Never Limit the Search

George Metesky, “The Mad Bomber”
I have always been amazed at the ability of FBI profilers to piece together seemingly trivial shreds of information to develop a thorough character sketch of a wanted criminal. My respect for this process only heightened after engaging in my own studies of forensics and criminal behavior. What could an expert determine about an anonymous suspect just from his chosen victim and the manner in which a crime was committed? It’s a fascinating question.

The first time a

Criminal Minds Can Exist in Unexpected Places

I have a great deal of respect for the men and women who choose to pursue a career in law enforcement. They are putting their own lives at risk every day to protect others. From my studies in forensics and criminal behavior, as well as conversations I have had with police officers concerning time and budget restraints, I know what a difficult task those who patrol our streets face every day. However, once in a while we are all reminded that police officers can find themselves on the wrong side o
