Emily Stone Could Hold Her Own Among TV Detectives

Flipping through the television channels these days, I am thrilled to find an increase in the number of strong female characters who take the lead in many of the most popular crime dramas. How about Kyra Sedgwick in TNT's The Closer? She plays Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, who heads up a special LAPD homicide department. Her powerful presence has made the show one of the most popular ever in the history of cable television. Yet another amazing actress, Holly Hunter, takes command

Contest Fun-10 Reasons to Read My Thriller Novel "Compulsion"

10 Reasons to Read Compulsion

It's officially summertime and I wanted to lighten things up a bit.

One of my favorite beach memories was sitting on a deserted beach in Kauai a couple of years ago. The white sandy beaches and the perfect temperature of 80 degrees made it difficult to leave. There is nothing better than the warm tropical breeze against your face, scrunching the sand between your toes, the sound of the waves lapping against the shore, and of course a nice icy drink of your choice.

The Four Categories of Serial Killers

Some forensic psychologists spend their entire careers studying the mindset and motives of serial killers. There is no doubt that men and women who commit such heinous crimes on a mass scale are fascinating objects of study. They are not to be admired, for sure, but it is important to understand the criminal mind as much as possible so that members of our law enforcement will be able to recognize the significance of every possible clue and develop an understanding of patterns.

Interview with a California Police Sergeant & Bomb Squad Commander from Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department

One of the most interesting parts of my job as a writer is conducting research and interviewing professionals for possible upcoming novels and story ideas. I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to talk with some of the most remarkable law enforcement officers from various departments.

My debut novel, Compulsion, required some research into homicide investigations and forensic practices. Heroine Emily Stone uses her innate ability to detect and profile child pedophiles and serial killers.

Today, I

Comparing Sharks and Serial Killers

One of the most common questions that a patient might get asked by her therapist, or that even might be a topic of conversation at a friend’s dinner party, is “What type of animal best represents you?” Are you a small kitten who likes affection and close contact with the people around you? Maybe you are a lion because you are incredibly protective and fierce when those you love are threatened. This week, the Journal of Zoology published the results of new research that asserts another animal cor

Compulsion is a fresh and exciting debut focussing on crime and the devastating, life-changing effects it can have on everyone involved, including the cops who have the unenviable task of uncovering victims and digging them out of their shallow graves.

The heroine, Emily Stone, is a complex and well-written cha

What is a “Compulsion”?

How would you define the word “compulsion”? We sometimes think of it in the positive sense, like in those first stages of a young love when we have a compulsion to spend time with a person or do nice things for them. There is also the negative side to such a powerful word. What about when we feel a compulsion to drink or strike out in anger or even the seemingly more mundane compulsions we hear about like repeated hand washing or clock checking? I looked up a few definitions for “compulsion” and

Emily’s Crime Watch – Tip #5

Emily Stone has some interesting ways that she fights back against crime and injustice in my novel Compulsion. She has been known to fight with punches and kicks, but she also has an uncanny ability to infer subtle clues in order to track down child pedophiles and killers.

What are victim’s options when suddenly confronted or threatened by a criminal predator?

Interestingly, there are guidelines that the FBI suggests if you are confronted in a crime situation along with a couple of other options t
