Long Beds on Radio Tonight

The Long Beds and I recently traveled to Deadwood, South Dakota, and played a show at the Civic Center.  The show and an interview will be airing tonight on South Dakota Public Broadcasting from 9-11 p.m. CST and 8-10 p.m. Mountain Time.  You can listen online if you go to the website and click on "Listen Live Now!"

If the song is included, be sure to listen for my special jazz chords on "Somewhere Out in Mudbrook."

Thank you to the sound guy, the tech guy, and Matt Weesner for turning it all i...

Small-Town Upside

Continuing the theme of absent-mindedness, yesterday morning I headed for the Post Office after fruitlessly searching for the key to our PO box (I didn't search too intently, since I leave the keys at the Post Office so regularly they oughta just put a little hook up there for me – the Postmaster in New Auburn kept them right there beside the register).  When I got to the Post Office, I was informed that not only did I leave my key there last time, I had left it in the lock with the drawer p...

Good Soup

Came in from filming in the woods the other day and my wife was percolating lentil soup.  Man, was it good.  Included homegrown tomatoes and homegrown pork sausage.  I am not exactly a logger out there (for one thing, loggers don't get successive takes if the tree falls the wrong way) but nothing like coming in from the cold to warm homemade soup.

My wife says the soup is called "Hearty Lentil-Sausage Soup," and it can be found on page 212 of the More-with-Less Cookbook by Doris Janzen Longacre.

Mister Absent-Minded

I am so regularly absent-minded that I actually get angry with myself about it.  Cuss-out-loud angry.  Sounds silly, probably is silly, but it's true.  Late for an event the other day, I left the car running, ran up to the office for something I had forgotten, then ran out and jumped in the other car and had it started before I realized what I was doing.

This morning I put up a post about my morning radio interview and made it look like I was going to be on for 13 hours straight (caught by...

Honor, Pride

Honor for those who have fallen.

Pride, because my buddy Mills has donated countless hours to this effort.  I like to crack jokes about Mills, about our carp-shooting and chicken-coop-wall-flopping exploits, but he is one of those folks who spends a big swath of his time quietly doing good things for other people.

Books, Books, Books

The Chippewa Valley Book Festival is on the horizon.  October 22-25.  The list of presenters includes poet Todd Boss (his "Wood Burning" from Yellowrocket is one of my ever-favorite poems…saw him read it live recently and it brought tears to my eyes) and my mentor (as in I wouldn't be doing any of this if not for his influence) John Hildebrand (last seen on page 246 of Truck: A Love Story).  Also poet Sandra Lindow and Wisconsin Poet Laureate Marilyn Taylor.

And many/much more.
