At Least I Don't Have To Go To The Principal's Office
Mr. Big-Shot Writer Dude just received an email from his 7th grade English teacher saying she's enjoying Coop but that on page 138 I should have used "quietly" rather than "quiet."
She is correct, of course. I am told she is re-sharpening her red pen. I expect at least three more emails.
Thanks, Mrs. R. And thanks even more for that blackboard assignment back in 197? that helped me fall for writing in the first place.
Retired, you say? A teacher is always teaching.

My friend Ben drove in/down/over from Ohio to be at the reading in Portland, Indiana, last night and took this photo. It was good to see Ben. He has remained in loyal correspondence since way back when Population 485 came out.

On the Road Again
Up early in the motel room, on the road to Indiana today. Yesterday had a great time in Pekin, IL, and I enjoyed seeing all the giant combines at work on my way down. Some of the corn looks ready, some still with a hint of green in the stalk, but the beans are ready for sure and all those big red machines, green machines and silver (those still Gleaners?) machines were roaring along.
