Neighbor Can Pick

I see Volume One did an article on Greg Gilbertson.  I've mentioned him before, he's from right up the road.  Recently while I was struggling through a B to A transition on the Heyde Center stage I gave a little shout-out to Greg, gave him carte blanche to use any of my riffs.  I'm gracious that way.  The Volume One piece is over here.

In and Out

Had to stop back in the office to take care of some actual work.  Strange to be in the deer stand, skulking around, then suddenly back online communicating with civilized people.  There is something fascinating and potentially disturbing about how quickly we can shift modes/personas.  I find this happens during travel also.  It is my theory that in less than 24 hours we can develop whole new routines and obsessions.  Or even in the course of a single airline flight.  This is an essay for...

Coop Music

Over on Facebook, someone asked if I could list all the songs I mention in my books.  That seems like fun, and perhaps one day I'll do it.  Right now, however, I'm deer hunting.  So I hope this will tide you over.

Local Foods, Venison Division

It is Holy Week in Wisconsin.  That is to say, I am in the woods.  Most of the week.  Blogging will be light.

If You Thought the Deer Hunting Beard Was Bad

Posted a photo of last year's deer hunting beard recently.  Now photographer and author David Marcou has published another bearded photo of me he took in LaCrosse a few years back.  You can see the photo here.

I am told the photo will be included in Mr. Marcou's upcoming book A Modest Archival Photobook.  When the book is available, more information will be posted here.

More Words and Phrases That Creep Me Out

"No doubt about it."  As it is employed by sports talk radio jocks.  Yes, I get me a little sports radio talk now and then.

"Sort of" and "kind of".  This is the NPR equivalent of "like" and "y'know".  Seriously.  Listen to a day's worth of interviews on NPR and see how many times you hear this.  The thing that really grates my teeth?  I catch myself saying "sort of," "kind of," and "like" all the time.

The last time I wrote about words and phrases that creep me out, the folks over on Facebook ...

Re-recording

Music project continues.  We gathered in my little office this week to record a few additional bits for the Long Beds album due out next March.  Today I will try to get some (over)due writing done and stow the last of the pig fencing.  I have been using the International around the farm a lot lately.  Right now it's loaded down with lumber and steel fence posts.  It seems happy to have its springs flexed.  Speaking of loaded Internationals:

As far as I know, that is not my truck, although I...

You Don't Have To Feed These

Or clean up after them.

Some fine chicken and pig art here.

And we have a lovely brahma cutout portrait by this artist.  It's propped up in my office (this washed-out image doesn't do the verite justice – it's a bland phone photo taken because our camera's MIA):

Joys of Dadhood

Bedtime, the two-year-old tucked in, snuggled with blankie and thumb in place, I'm just about to leave the room when she looks up in the half-light and in the quietest voice says, "Can I have a scratchbacker?"

Yes you can, little one.

Gosh.
