Adventures Creating an ACX Audiobook

ConfessionsLogo

(This column originally appeared 4/22/15 at LitCentralOC.com.)

There’s probably a better time to begin the process of creating an audiobook than when you’re smack dab in the middle of finishing a novel, but I was too excited by the prospect to care.

Okay, that’s only partly true. What happened was I looked into it a few months ago, put up a post at ACX.com indicating I was interested in a royalty-share option (authors can choose to share royalties with the narrator/producer, or pay a per-hour rate and keep all royalties*) and I’ve been waiting for a producer to approach me.

But then local author Beth Yarnall shared her experience with audiobooks at a recent OCC RWA meeting, and she convinced me ACX was such a great opportunity, it was worth pursuing more aggressively.

So, I switched gears. Instead of sitting around waiting for auditions, I listened to samples producers have posted and discovered quite a few who would be a good fit for “Shimmy for Me.” And since the book is a novella, I figured I could afford to abandon the royalty-share option and pay a per-hour rate to improve my chances of attracting more interest.

After I narrowed my choices to a handful of producers, I messaged them through ACX to ask if they would be interested in my project. Lucky for me, my first choice was interested. Sarah Beth Goer and I quickly worked out a contract, and she has already recorded nearly half of the novella. I expect it’ll be done next month, and likely available in June.

The Real Women of Belly Dance

People often ask where I get my story ideas, and the truth is they can come from anywhere: an overheard conversation, a dream, a slice of real life. For SHIMMY FOR ME, the first book in my new California Belly Dance series, it was a belly dance class. Actually, years and years of belly dance classes. I took my first one in college in 1990, and have continued with them off and on ever since.
In my experience, there is something incredibly special about the kind of women you find in the belly dance world. They are bold, strong, adventurous, and they are probably the most interesting people I have ever met.And these are the kinds of women I love to spend time with, and the kind I love to write about. I also love all the comments I get from readers that they’ve enjoyed getting to know the dancers in my stories, too. So I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the real women in the belly dance world who inspired them.

‘Dance with Me’ Is So Close

Whew! The story is done. There are a few details to work out and some polishing to do, but if all goes well, I think there’s a good chance Melanie and Taz’s story will be ready BEFORE summer. Whoo-hoo!

P.S.  There should be cover art to share soon, too! Whoo-hoo!

Read2Rescue

Read2Rescue_12by825

I’m thrilled to be joining some writer friends on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Books on Broadway in Costa Mesa to support Run2Rescue, a wonderful organization that is making a real difference in the lives of many individuals caught in the sex trafficking trade right here in Orange and surrounding counties.

The authors will be reading from our latest releases and a representative from the organization will be on hand to share a little about Run2Rescue.

And what better place to enjoy some good book company, a few light refreshments, and support a good cause on a Sunday afternoon than Books on Broadway, one of the sweetest, coziest bookstores you’ll ever find?

Donations will be accepted and proceeds from sales will benefit Run2Rescue.

Hope to see you there!
