Interview - Sacred Legacy by Kat Flannery

Welcome back Kat, let's talk about your newest release Sacred Legacy, book 3 of the Branded Trilogy. Is the setting to your story important?
Yes, it is very important. Because Sacred Legacy is the last book in the Branded Trilogy I needed to take her back to Jamestown, VA and into the Appalachian mountains. This is where the second book took place.
Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
I’ve always loved to write. When I was a teenager I wrote short stories, and poems, but not many people knew. I used the words as an outlet to whatever I was dealing with at that time. After I got married and had children the need to write intensified and I found myself staying up late to write, or research, or read. When my youngest son was four, I went back to school and took all the courses I needed to learn the craft. It took me five years of correspondence but I did it. I then went on to freelance and write for a few different magazines. When I realized I didn’t like to be told what to write. I wanted to tell stories, and so I penned my first novel, Chasing Clovers.
If I could not be a writer, I’d be a History teacher.
When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
When I signed my first contract for Chasing Clovers with my publisher Imajin Books in 2011.
How long did it take to get your first book published?
Two years of rejections and re-writes. If you cannot handle rejections this is not the business for you. I cannot say that I did not learn from each of them, because I did. I took the advice, the suggestions and used them to my advantage.
What were your goals as an author and have any of them come true?
I wanted to make Amazon’s Top 100 Paid List and I was able to do it twice with Chasing Clovers and I got very close with Lakota Honor. It took a lot of marketing and writing blog posts, interviews and in general being out there for people to see to get me there.
Thank you so much for having me on your blog!
Thanks for joining us at Fang-tastic Books.

CHAPTER ONE SACRED LEGACY
Jamestown, Virginia, July 1740
Tsura Harris lifted the hem of her green skirt and stepped up onto the wooden plank. She clutched her reticule in her right hand and reached for the rope with her left. The planked bridge swayed as the boat rocked against the seas. She stared at the water below. White-capped waves crashed along the ship’s hull, rocking the boat. She inhaled, forced her chin up, and took another step. She walked the short distance to the boardwalk, releasing the breath she’d held when her boot touched land. She planted both feet upon the wooden dock and set her shoulders, but the reminder of why she was here intensified the weight upon her chest. Despair was her shadow, and it was with her today. “Sister!” Her brother’s deep, masculine shout came from above. She shaded her eyes from the hot afternoon sun and peered up at him. His stature always shocked her. Micah Walker was six foot with broad shoulders and strong arms, a spitting image of their father, Kade. His white shirt gaped open to show the tanned skin beneath, a sign of too many days out on the water. Long blond hair waved in the breeze. Her handsome brother had his pick of the ladies, but still hadn’t settled down. It was a shame. She knew he wanted children and a wife of his own, but his heart belonged to the sea and time would lend him those favors only when he was ready.“You must wait,” he called and raced past his men carrying crates of goods onto the wharf. She placed her bag onto the wooden walk and clasped her gloved hands together. He reached her, his cheeks glowing and dark eyes lit with mischief. Before she could discourage him, he picked her up and swung her around. Her boots kicked the bag, knocking it over, as his strong arms held her tight. Micah had always been affectionate. He never shied away from holding her hand, kissing her cheek, or teasing her like a brother would. He’d come to her side when she needed him the most. When her life had fallen apart, and she couldn’t see past her own misery to pick herself up. He had carried her, and she loved him for it. “You cannot go off without wishing me well.” He smiled down at her.“If you would simply release me, I’d be able to make it so,” she retorted. He was the only one, aside from her mother and father, who she allowed to touch her. “Very well, nit.” He set her in front of him. The nickname he used for her was one of endearment and came from her pestering him as a child. “Thank you.” She smoothed her skirt before bringing her eyes to meet his.“You do not need to do this.” She glanced away unable to stare at him any longer. “Come sail with me.”She shook her head. The urge to leave caused her legs to shake. She couldn’t be around him any longer. His cheerful disposition haunted her and made her think of things she’d rather forget. “I know you don’t want to speak of this, but—”“No, Micah.”“Tsura, you need to forgive—”“Forgiveness is not within my heart.”“It surely is.”She shook her head, careful not to release the many pins holding her thick corkscrew curls in a loose chignon.“It is in all of us.”She glared at her brother.“Do not speak to me of forgiveness, brother. My heart is cold to it.”His dark eyes watered, and she knew her words had hurt him, but she didn’t care. It was better this way—it was easier. “Will you not reconsider?” “No.”“Please stay. I will protect you.”Protection was not what she needed. She could care less if she died. It’d be a relief from the constant pain she felt each day.“I should’ve taken you to mother and father.”“Do not speak to them of my presence here.”“They will understand.”“Not one word.”Micah sighed. “As you wish.”“I must go.” Anger pressed on her spine, and she straightened. His shoulders dropped.“Be safe. Trust no one.”She nodded.“I port back in Jamestown one month to this day. You will be here.”It was not a question, and she didn’t know if a month would be enough. Would the time between then and now ever fade from her soul? Would she be ready to return? She didn’t know if she could go back and so she didn’t answer.“Hiram knows of you coming?”“He does.”“Very well.” He straightened and smiled. “Know that I love you.”She fought the tears. If Micah saw one ounce of sadness within her, he’d throw her back aboard the Jade and take her with him. “As I you.” She refused to say the words. He picked up her bag and handed it to her. “Thank you. Now go. You have work to do and whores to see.” She smirked.“Ah, that I do.” He pulled her into a final embrace. “You will find your way. I am sure of it.” He held her away from him, and his eyes searched hers. “Remember who you are.”She pressed on his chest and stepped out of his embrace. She couldn’t help the furrow of her brow or the set of her chin. The reminders of the life she led were never to be forgotten, and because of that she’d be forever lost.Micah sensed the change in her and left it alone. He bowed, and with a final kiss to her forehead he walked away. She turned, unable to watch him go, raised to believe it was a sign of weakness, of regret to watch one leave your life. This was meant to be. The world around her had tilted, and even though she wanted nothing more than to go back in time to the lavish house on the hill where she’d felt content, where laughter was but an expression upon her lips, she could not. What had been was no more, and she’d do right to remember it. One year had passed, but the ache inside her soul still remained

Interview - Tour - Beyond Your Touch: Dark Heart Series Book Two by Pat Esden

What inspired your story?
BEYOND YOUR TOUCH is the second novel in the Dark Heart series. It was inspired by the mystery that is at the heart of A HOLD ON ME (Dark Heart book 1) --and also by my desire to not make falling in love easy for Annie and Chase.  It’s hard to say a lot more without giving spoilers for book 1.
Is the setting to your story important?
Yes. It’s set in the imaginary town of Port St. Claire, Maine which is near the real town of Bar Harbor. In this book, an artifact that’s on display at Bar Harbor’s Abbe Museums is vital to the story.
Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
Since I was young, I wanted to be a novelist. But I have also always had a strong interest in plants and nature in general, and in antiques and junk. In college I majored in Plant and Soil Science, but took creative writing as well. I ended up pursuing a career as a florist and antique dealer. Eventually, I started taking writing classes online to expand my skills with the intent of becoming a published author.
When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
Probably in the third grade. Seriously, being a writer has nothing to do with being published or for that matter with what you write. Someone who is inspired to create poetry that they never share with anyone has just as much of a right to call themselves a writer as a journalist for a local paper or a NY Times bestselling author.
How long did it take to get your first book published?
From the time I started taking writing class online with the intention of becoming published, it took several years before I sold my first novelette. I queried about five or six novels before I signed with an agent. Once my agent starting submitting A HOLD ON ME to editors, it took thirteen months before it sold to Kensington Books and all the contracts were signed. After that, it was around a year and a half before the novel was released.
What was the first book you ever published?
I’ve had a number of short fiction pieces and novelettes published. There’s a list and blurbs for them on my website. http://patesden.com/books.phpThe first novel I had published was  A HOLD ON ME (Dark Heart series book 1). BEYOND YOUR TOUCH (Dark Heart series book 2) will be my second novel-length publication, followed by REACH FOR YOU when it’s released next year.
What was the craziest thing you’ve ever done when it came to a storyline in your book?
I’m not going into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil the story. But there is a scene in BEYOND YOUR TOUCH involving breaking into a Mustang.  I couldn’t find the information I needed online because there are a lot of difference between models and years of Mustangs. At any rate, I went to the dealership and asked if they’d tell me how to break into the latest model Mustang, and some other rather strange questions. We ended up doing a sort of reenactment in the middle of the showroom.

Excerpt:
It is easy enough to list in advance, and with absolute certainty, those things for which we are prepared to die. Family, country, religion, the one we love, a valued way of life. Until we are faced with a situation that puts our convictions to the test, we can never know for sure which of these will hold true. There were many lessons to be learned during those strange weeks on the island of Corazón, but, for Connie Lacey, this would prove be the most important.                                                                           Four years of running and hiding. Four years of looking over her shoulder. Of viewing every man she met with suspicion. Of waking every morning, wondering if today was the day he would finally catch up with her.The relief of being offered somewhere to hide was so huge it drove every other thought out of her head. She had a brief mental image of herself as a disaster survivor and the man opposite as the rescue worker who had just draped an emergency blanket around her shoulders. She resisted the temptation to cling to him, garbling out incoherent thanks until he was forced to gently pry her hands away. They were the wild thoughts spinning through Connie Lacey’s mind as she listened to the clipped tones of the attorney. With hindsight, she probably should have paid more attention to the strangeness of the offer he was making and the diffident manner with which he made it. Gratitude will do that to you, she decided later. At the time her attention was taken up with grabbing this opportunity. Nod, smile, and sign on the dotted line. Don’t ask questions that might make him withdraw this incredible invitation. All she could focus on was the fact that—for thirty days, at least—she would not have to sleep with a knife under her pillow.“You have one week.” She realized Mr. Reynolds had finished outlining the details of the proposal. “My client will expect you to be in Florida in exactly seven days’ time.”Connie swallowed hard. She might have known there would be a catch. The logistics of getting to Florida posed a massive problem. Mentally, she reviewed the contents of her wallet. She knew exactly how much cash was in there. It wouldn’t get her across town let alone across the country. Before she could speak, Mr. Reynolds reached into the desk drawer and produced a hefty roll of banknotes. His expression softened slightly as he passed them across the desk.“Expenses. For the journey and such sundry other items as may be necessary.” He cleared his throat with a hint of something that might have been embarrassment. “My client is a very exacting man. His guests will, for example, be required to dress for dinner during their stay on Corazón.”Darn! And there I was thinking I had successfully managed to hide the fact that the sole is hanging off one of my sneakers and this sweater has forgotten what color it used to be.Connie stuffed the wad of cash into her shoulder bag with a muttered word of thanks. If an encounter with Sylvester’s attorney could reduce her to the status of a gibbering wreck, how on earth was she going to cope with the man himself? As she got to her feet, Mr. Reynolds rose and came around the desk. He held out his hand. Surprised, Connie took it. Instead of the handshake she had expected, he clasped her hand between both of his. It was an oddly tactile gesture for such an aloof man.“However this venture may turn out…” He paused and Connie sensed he was fighting an internal battle. As if the personal and professional were at war within him. The result felt like his version of a truce. “I wish you well, Miss Lacey.”It was only later, when she got back to her grim, one-room apartment and counted—then, in disbelief, re-counted—the money, that she began to truly appreciate the gulf between her world and that of Corazón. What constituted “sundry other items” to Mr. Reynolds was almost a year’s salary to Connie.Laughing, she tossed the notes into the air and briefly contemplated just disappearing with them. To hell with “second cousin several convoluted times removed” Sylvester and his mysteriously worded proposition. This money could buy her the freedom from fear she had been dreaming of. Temporarily, it was true, but even that was so much more than she had wished for. No more moving from town to town and job to job? No more looking over her shoulder? Yeah, I’ll take that and deal with the future when it gets here.A pang of guilt tugged at her. Backing out wasn’t an option. She had just accepted Mr. Reynolds’s wretched invitation and a promise was, after all, a promise. Besides—despite its reputation—she was intrigued enough by Corazón to want to see it and, even if she admitted it only to herself, she wanted to meet the legendary Sylvester. The ease with which Arthur Reynolds, senior partner in the firm of Reynolds, Prudah and Taylor, had tracked her down was unsettling. Even if she hadn’t been contemplating answering Sylvester’s eccentric summons, it would have been time to move on. Goodbye—she experienced a minor moment of panic as she tried to remember where she was. It had to happen one day—Farmington, Missouri. The last month has been okay, but it was never a long-term thing. We both knew it. No hard feelings.
She had a week to prepare for the journey. With a shrug, she tucked the money away at the back of her closet and curled up on the bed with a book. Connie could have her belongings packed in an hour. She’d done it often enough.

Interview - Dragon Knight’s Ring by Mary Morgan

Today we have Mary Morgan and her newest release, Dragon Knight's Ring.
Is the setting to your story important?
Yes! I want the reader to see, smell, taste, and feel the background—from the elements to the scenery. It builds as a layer around the characters. You could have this intense dialogue happening, but toss in a fierce storm, and you have magic!
Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
When I was young, I dreamed of being writer, but the dream faded with insecurities. As I became older, I wanted to fly planes and go to the moon. However, life took a different course and motherhood descended upon me. It was decades later when my soul cried out to me to start writing again. It had always been my true passion.
When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
This might seem strange, but when I first received my rejection letter. I shouted, “I’m finally acknowledged.” Of course, I immediately burst into tears, but quickly recovered. I think I submitted to fifteen publishers that day. I was determined to find one.
What have you learned about the publishing industry since you’ve signed that first contract?
I’ve learned to find the balance. The business side of being an author can drain your creativity, so I had to remember to do the business around the writing. Furthermore, I had to close the door (mentally) at the end of the day on all the work. As a writer, we’re on call 24/7—be it with our editors, the business, or our characters. I remember a two- month period where I didn’t stop for one solid day. I was numb afterwards.  What genres do you normally write in?
Paranormal, Time-travel, and Historical. Currently, I’ve expanded, and the new series will be more Fantasy. It’s exciting creating this new realm. You have the sense of freedom to do whatever you want. I’m making the rules as I write, which is thrilling.
Thanks so much for having me on your blog! ~Mary Morgan

Second Excerpt:
Shocked by her words, Adam shoved the spoon into his mouth. Savoring the flavors of the meat, he handed the spoon back to her. Licking his lips, he arched a brow at her. “Needs more salt and meat.” Drinking the last of his beer, he set the bottle down.
“The first time I saw ye was in the hills near Urquhart. I was attempting to calm said beast.” He pointed to Ciar. “He was fierce in the beginning. Yet, ye ambled over to him, singing. Ye have always had a way with the animals. Your voice soothes them.”
“And that’s how we met, right? Ye did share this, but was there more?” She handed him another spoonful of the meat mixture.
“Aye. Ye followed me down to the loch, and we talked for many hours. It was the start of our kinship.”
Meggie rested her chin on her knees. “For how long, Adam?”
“Several summers.” He watched her closely, trying to gage her thoughts.
“Hmm…we were in a relationship.”
Baffled by her word, he shrugged. “I dinnae ken your meaning.”
“Were we a couple? Was I your girlfriend? Sweetheart?”
Adam took his thumb and captured a lone bit of food near her lip. Popping the tasty piece into his mouth, he heard her indrawn breath. “Ye were mine, Meggie. Stubborn, defiant, strong, and ye embraced each day with love for all.”
“What happened?” she asked.
“Ye left.” Standing, Adam moved away. Never a patient man, he wanted to blurt out everything, shake her into remembering. Frustration slithered inside of him. Walking over to an old oak, he braced his hands against its rough bark. He heard her approach, but kept his back to her.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, and then surprised Adam by placing her arms around him.
Her touch seared straight to his soul, fracturing a place within his heart that had been sealed since her death. He broke free from her embrace and turned around. Grasping her face with his hands, his eyes roamed over her features. Seeing her lips part, he could no longer control the man that longed to taste what had been stolen from him. His entire being seemed to be filled with waiting, and he grew weary of the fight.
Lowering his head, his tongue traced the soft fullness of her lips. Then he brushed a feather light kiss on her mouth. It was divine bliss when their lips touched. “Do ye want me to stop?” he asked, breathing the words against her cheek.
“Nae.”

Reclaiming her mouth, Adam crushed her to him. This time, he devoured her soft lips and drank in their sweetness, slipping his tongue inside her mouth. Her moan slid deep within him, and he trembled.

LITERATURE’S FIRST WARRIOR WOMEN with William Burke

LITERATURE’S FIRST WARRIOR WOMEN
In my book Voodoo Child, Book One: Zombie Uprising I strove to create a core group of female characters who were ready, willing and able to fight for a cause, without relying on any man to protect them. Searching for inspiration (and stuff to steal) I researched literature’s most valiant warrior women and was shocked to discover what a long and rocky road it’s been.
Modern fiction is finally overcoming its chauvinistic fear of strong women. From The Hunger Gamesto the women in of George R. Martins Game of Thrones there are now action heroines to root for- But that wasn’t always the case. Today I want to give shout out to three of literature’s bravest, but sadly overlooked women. I’m steering clear of comic books, movies and television because chronicling all those would require a government research grant. Plus, without these legendary ladies we would never have Sarah Conner, Ripley, Brienne of Tarth, Katniss Everdeen, or even Wonder Woman.
Please note that I’m not ignoring the courage and importance of great female literary characters like Anna Karenina or Nancy Drew, (somewhere an English Lit. Professor just screamed). Many of our greatest literary works are built on the courage and suffering of women. But for this humble piece I’m addressing characters that faced life’s challenges with cold steel.
The first genuine, no retreat, no surrender, warrior women are found in Greek Mythology. By the way, if you haven’t read Greek mythology for its sheer entertainment value you should. The myths are packed with great action adventure tales and astute observations about human nature that still ring true.
My first choice isn’t a character, but rather a whole tribe. THE AMAZONS were a fierce nation of warrior women who only used men for procreation. But as soon as that sweet loving was finished the men were either killed, or kept as slaves. According to the legends the Amazons were skilled swordswomen and amazing equestrians who were buried with their horses.
I could write an article about each Amazon queen, but here’s a highlights reel: Queen Myrina rode into Libya and defeated the Atlantians. Queen Hippolyta and her belt is the subject of Hercules ninth labor. Queen Penthesilealed the Amazons in the Trojan War. Unfortunately she picked the Trojan side and Achilles slew her. And finally one of them grew up to be…
My favorite action heroine of Greek mythology is ATALANTA, a fierce warrior who also happened to be the fastest human alive. How awesome was Atalanta? Well, she got off to a rough start when her jackass father abandoned his infant daughter in the woods. Yeah, you guessed it… he wanted a boy. Fortunately a grizzly bear took pity on the starving infant and suckled her. Eventually hunters took Atalanta in and trained her in the fighting arts. Atalanta blossomed into an incredibly beautiful young woman who, unlike most characters in Greek mythology, was devoted to protecting her virginity (the Greek gods were notorious swingers… real Penthouse Forum stuff).
Unfortunately two horny centaurs named Rhoecus and Hylaeus heard rumors of young Atalanta’s beauty and decided to drop by for some quick gang rape. When I say unfortunate I mean for the centaurs because Atalanta killed them both and strolled away with her virtue intact. Remember, these were centaurs- half man, half beast… tough customers!

Single handedly killing lust crazed centaurs was only the beginning. Atalanta went on to sail with Jason and his Argonauts (but was written out of many accounts!) and later slew a giant boar that was terrorizing Kaledonia. I don’t want to ruin her story for you, but rest assured it’s juicy stuff. It’s also fascinatingly progressive for an era when Greek women had no legal rights or personhood. Even Atalanta’s name is derived from the Greek word atalantos meaning, “equal in weight”.  She was certainly equal to any of mythology’s male champions.
Atalanta is represented in many classic works of ancient Greek art, and, thanks to the television’s series Hercules the Legendary Journeys also lives on as a plastic action figure with weirdly large gluts and a tiny head.

She was the original warrior princess, but strangely enough there was a very long gap before a worthy successor came along… like nineteen centuries!
BRADAMANT OF CLAREMONTwas the heroine of the 16th century epic poem Orlando Furioso. You may never have heard of Orlando Furioso, but in its day this tale of Emperor Charlemagne’s royal court rivaled King Arthur’s adventures in popularity. That shouldn’t be a surprise- it’s a ripping yarn packed with enough battles, wizards, demons and magic ring bearing dwarves to make Richard Wagner and J.R.R. Tolkien drool.
King Arthur’s legendary round table may have been a total sausage fest, but fortunately Emperor Charlemagne was more broad-minded… he was French after all. Bradamant of Claremont was a full on female knight dutifully serving the emperor. Like Atalanta she was devoted to protecting her chastity, a gift she was saving for her true love- a fellow warrior named Ruggiero. Unfortunately, Ruggiero was sort of the Jerry Lewisof Charlemagne’s court, and was constantly being captured. I mean the guy was hopeless, and the task of saving his bacon always fell to Bradamant. You heard that right- she was rescuing him! Did I mention Ruggiero was a Saracen warrior and therefore (gasp) a Muslim? What a progressive story!
With her trusty sword and magic lance she hacked her way across the countryside taking on all opponents. Later translations of Orlando Furioso substitute vague terms like “unseated by her lance,” or “forced to submit,” but don’t be fooled- in the original text she was lopping off heads and taking names.
If reading a 16th century epic poem sounds a bit daunting you can always check out Ron Miller’s novel “Bradamant, the Iron Tempest.” It’s a great read with plenty of exciting action and twisted humor.
Literary history story has unjustly overlooked Bradamont. One of her few media appearances was in the schlocky Italian film Hearts and Armor, where Barbara De Rossi portrayed her. But I’m convinced Bradamont of Claremont directly inspired Game Of Thrones awesome Brienne of Tarth- their names are even similar. Brienne is a fascinating character that truly does her predecessor proud.
The Amazons, Atalanta and Bradamont were all brave warriors. But just as importantly these characters shattered the cultural stereotypes of their day by being as strong and independent as any man without consequence. We owe their creators a huge debt. The only real question is why did it take another four hundred years for our culture to embrace the concept again? Women of action are back, and this time they’re here to stay.

Isle De Fantomas was a nation born in blood and forged in suffering. Its citizens were the descendents of slaves who, after generations in bondage, had broken their chains. These slaves, who had never known mercy, showed none to their masters. On the first night of the rebellion their scythes and cane machetes slaughtered half the slave-owning colonists; the remaining half were less fortunate. For a brief moment the long-suffering people of Fantomas were free; but from that newfound freedom sprang even more brutal masters. For two centuries Fantomas endured an endless cycle of homegrown tyrants lusting for power. The latest of these despots, General Manuel Ortiz, followed the violent traditions of his predecessors, filling the island's cemeteries with innocent victims. Though countless lives were lost, the human spirit endured, fueled by the people's unwavering faith in Voodoo. The citizens of Fantomas clung to their beliefs, knowing that someday the Voodoo spirits would crush their oppressors and set their children free.

About the Author:
After two years of ghostwriting, William Burke has released his first novel VOODOO CHILD, Book One: Zombie Uprising. It's the first installment of a new horror series chronicling the exploits of Maggie Child and her Voodoo priestess partner Sarafina as they battle to save the island of Fantomas from the wrath of evil Voodoo spirits.
The author was raised on a diet of late night creature features, comic books, Mad magazines and horror stories. As a result every volume will be packed with eccentric characters, dark humor, chills, zombies, ghosts, monsters, military hardware and plenty of stuff blowing up.
Prior to writing Voodoo Child he was the creator and director of the Destination America television series Hauntings and Horrors. He has also written scripts for two Cinemax television series, Forbidden Science and Lingerie, which he also produced. He has also written magazine pieces for Fangoria and the Phantom of the Movies Videoscope among others.
William began his film and television career as a perfectly respectable video engineer at the venerable United Nations. Budget cuts shifted him to becoming a production manager and assistant director on an array of New York based indie films. With that experience under his belt he relocated to Los Angeles where he eventually produced sixteen feature films and two television series for the Playboy Entertainment Group. After years of producing T&A extravaganzas, kickboxing epics and gangster rap videos, he created a self financed television pilot entitled American Mystery Tour. Canada's CTV picked up the series under the title Creepy Canada, which was then re-titled Hauntings and Horrors in the USA.  Since then he has successfully produced three series for HBO/Cinemax as well as documentaries and other … stuff.
After hundreds of hours of film and television production he is basking in the freedom of the written word, where small budgets and giant egos are only memories. He lives in Toronto.
If you enjoyed the first adventure please visit www.williamburkeauthor.com where you'll find lots of interesting information about Voodoo and military hardware, along with excerpts from Sarafina's personal diary AND, as a gift to readers, the author will be serializing a prequel novella

Amazon Excerpt: Prologue
It doesn’t rain frequently in San Jose, California and when it does it’s a quick gray affair that rinses away dust and freshens the air. Every few years there’s a day or two of torrential downpours, interspersed by widespread drizzling and dripping. And rarely, as was the case this day, the skies opened and dumped a decade’s worth of rain upon the city in only a few days. These rare downpours could last days and do substantial damage citywide. The downpour was so heavy it was impossible to see farther than a few hundred yards. Water ran from the highest spots in the city and merged into thick fast flowing rivers on its journey downhill. It gushed down streets, blasting over curbs and past sign posts, taking away anything that wasn’t nailed down. The waters were black with months of accumulated filth and foamed with the runoff of a million miles of city streets. The fine dust of millions of corpses, that which wasn’t already blown away by the winds, was swept into storm drains and out to the Pacific Ocean. But the most alarming aspect of the rainstorm by far was the thunder and the lightning. Every few minutes great jagged bolts of light arced across the sky, illuminating the world in blinding flashes, followed moments later by the thunder, a terrifying sound as if the heavens were being torn open. Then cascading booms shook the earth for long moments after. One of these giant flashes illuminated the inside of a dark warehouse revealing a world of crisp black shadows and harsh blinding whites. For a split second a human shape was visible laying atop a large worktable. It resembled the sarcophagus of a long dead pharaoh. Puddles of odd liquids had collected under the body and run off the edge, hardening in long stalactites of black and dark red. A minor flash revealed a hardened shell, mottled with the same black and reddish hues. The long low rumble of the distant thunder that followed caused an eye to twitch. A loud crack and a blinding flash of light caused both eyes to open wide in shock and fear. A high-pitched keening could be heard emanating from the misshapen body on the table.Slowly a hand rose, the cracking of dried viscera was faint but clearly audible above the muted pounding of rain. The open eyes, clear and green, regarded a grotesque hand armored in a red and black crust. The arm dropped and the eyes closed. The thrumming of the rain and intense fatigue made slipping back into the sweet darkness of sleep all too easy.
Later, a blinding flash of light and the ensuing crack of thunder caused the figure to startle awake. Fat drops of water fell almost forty feet from the compromised skylights above creating a loud rhythmic clunk, clunk, clunk as they struck a crustaceous shell. There was a hiss as breath was sucked inwards through thin reddish tubes that hung over a tiny mouth. The creature spasmed at the discomfort as air filled its long dormant lungs. The figure rolled awkwardly left and right as it attempted to stand. Dried viscera cracked and crunched and fell away in large chunks. It stopped to rest a few times until eventually, with great effort, it rolled on its stomach and swung its legs off the table, pushing itself to a standing position in a sort of diagonal pushup. It struggled to stay upright as it took one awkward step forward, then another. The heavy armored shell made walking difficult and uncomfortable. Each labored movement caused the figure to hiss and gasp. It took three steps and bent forward over the table to rest. The effort was exhausting and the armored plates tugged at odd spots and pinched and pulled on the raw skin beneath. Many laborious steps later and the creature was nearing the door to the warehouse. The effort was exhausting, the movement unnatural, and feelings of weakness and nausea were overwhelming. But a sense of urgency drove the creature forward. It knew that it must get out of that dark place. There was somewhere it had to be.
The warehouse door swung open and wind blasted cold rain across the armored body, but it felt nothing. It looked down, apparently just now gaining a sense of awareness beyond wakefulness and the desire to escape the dark building. Groggily it tugged on a section of armored shell as if it was just now noticing it. The skin beneath pulled, the shell seemed to be attached to flesh like that of a lobster or crab. A disfigured hand rose up, lightning flashed and a gasp of horror came from the bulbous armored head as it looked with revulsion at its own red and black armored appendage. The creature looked to the sky and stepped into the torrential downpour. It shuddered as icy rain made its way beneath its armored plates. A shell loosened from a forearm and with a touch clattered to the ground. The rainwater stung like fire and the figure backed into the warehouse staring at raw skin glistening with red wetness. The unprotected skin was as sensitive as that of a newborn babe. The arm went back into the rain and recoiled again as if the rain water was scalding. It tried again and again until it could stand the pounding rain. Eventually it stepped out into the deluge and disappeared into the blinding storm.Lisa barely remembered her own name when she awoke, but now it was all coming back to her as she shuffled along in the downpour and she grew more and more terrified. She had no idea what had happened to her or what was happening to her presently. She remembered hiding in the safe room and later talking to the creature. Another piece of her exoskeleton fell away and she shivered as cold rain pounded her left shoulder. It didn’t hurt as bad as the first time rain hit her flesh. She almost tripped when most of the shell on her right leg fell away all at once. It was as if she were molting like a crab. She was sick, weak, and terrified. She had no idea what had happened to her but everything about her body felt different and weird.

Dark Sleepers is a startlingly imaginative debut."  ~ Dan Metcalf, Children's Author

Excerpt:
Kezia was struggling even more. The memories that threatened to overwhelm her had waned, dispersing like vapour from a boiling kettle. But they had been replaced by a fear that she guessed was not her own, even if it was hard to tell for sure.
She lay down on the dirty sand and closed her eyes. It was an instinctive action and at once she knew that it was a good one. She breathed, as her mum had taught her when she was stressed or worried. She could hear very clearly her mum’s soothing voice say “Darling, just breathe. That’s all you need to do.”
It helped. Her heart rate slowed and a sense of herself began to emerge from the jumble inside her. As she concentrated on her breathing, she began to hear a tiny whispering sound like mice behind skirting boards. It came from deep inside her head. And it definitely wasn’t her own thoughts. It must be the girl’s.
Then it occurred to her – maybe she could talk to this child. Maybe find out something that could help. Just like the day her dad died, she found that words weren’t needed. Her thoughts traced patterns of light through the blackness.
“Who are you?” She asked.
Almost immediately she got a reply. A quivering voice, barely audible, said: “I don’t know. I’m… I’m scared.” It sounded desperate.
“Please don’t worry. I’ve been to this place before, it’s not so bad. I can help you.” She hoped this was true. “What’s your name?”
“I don’t remember… wait, I think it may be Rose. Can you really help me?” The voice brightened. “But he was chasing me. I needed to get away. It all happened too fast.”
“I’m sorry Rose. I don’t understand.”

Confused for a moment… but then a light bulb pinged on. It drenched all the confusion in bright, white light. She suddenly realised she knew what was going on – what this place was and why the children were here.
