After trying unsuccessfully to find James and the Morrigan for the past two months—and with no further word from Lady Luck, my immediate boss as Hand of Fate—I only had one viable clue: the Fourth Seal. The essence of Deathand Pestilence. And, unfortunately, the only person who knew the location of the Seal Bearer was sitting on the raised platform. The arch-mage. Will anyone stand for him knowing the potential risk he represents?”A long, uncomfortable pause filled the room, a palpable weight settling over everything.“If you would have him back among our number,” the arch-mage said at last, breaking the quiet, “stand now, or hold your peace as the Elders pass judgement on this man. This unrepentantcriminal.”

Character Interview - The Raveners by LD Towers

An interview with His Eminence, Cardinal Mungo Kerr, Grandmaster Emeritus of the Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitan.
The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
Ah, my son. You are incorrect. I’m not the Grandmaster of the Order. I’m Grandmaster Emeritus of the Inner Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. It is a circle inside the wider group. While we share the same routes, our group has other tasks. We are very small. Normally there are twenty of us, but at the moment there are merely ten. A crusty group of older fellows. Not very interesting. I’m semi-retired these days.
Are you a morning person or a night person?
I have arrived at the juncture in my life where one is merely an extension of the other. I require very little sleep. Four hours at a maximum. Sometimes I break it into a couple of two hour rests. My life is usually one of study and quiet contemplation. I often snooze in the afternoons when the world is at its noisiest. The hustle and bustle of the afternoon is a frustration to me.
Where do you dream of traveling to and why?
There is not one part of the world I have not seen in my years. Except the Polar reaches, of course. I’ve had no reason to go there, and now I’m far too old for that sort of nonsense. No. I prefer to roam as little as possible. These days I spend my time at the Vatican and I’m often in England to study at the Bodleian Library. Such an extensive collection of books. They have no idea what they have.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Like all little boys of my time, I dreamed of being a soldier. And I was for a time. I spent seven years as an officer of the British Army before God called me to his service. Perhaps it made me a better leader for my order. Discipline is very important.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
There is a place I like to visit in Rome. The Castel Sant’Angelo. It’s very important to my order. We’ve a— meeting room of sorts— in the Castel. I like to go there and pray. Sometimes I work. But the work there is of such deep and lasting gratification to me. It soothes the weariness in my soul. It is my— what do you children say these days? Yes. It is my oasis. The place where I am most at peace. But my studies often call me away and a man cannot drink of the beautiful cup of pleasure too often lest he become drunk upon it.
What is your opinion on the state of the Catholic Church today?
Far more modern than when I was a lad. I must say I’m a pre Vatican II sort of a clergyman. But look at all the changes? Our new, modern, Oriental Pontiff? Pope Leo XIV quite sets the cat amongst the pigeons. Many changes coming. Who am I to say that perhaps too many traditions are being erased. Perhaps it is because His Holiness is so—- well foreign to the ways things have been done. Being a Cardinal on the far side of the world might not have prepared him as well as others for his tasks. But, of course it must be God’s will for us to have this man on the Throne of St. Peter and I will serve him to the outset of my abilities.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Oh I can think of a few things they might like to know about me, but I’m not at liberty to say. I’ve lived many lives. I’ve saved many souls.
Do you have any special routines or rituals?
Some new ones have come with age. I’m increasingly focused on this great blue and green jewel we live upon. This planet, this Earth, has so much power. I only discovered how magical it was in later life. Yes. You could call me a form of Environmentalist. We must harness the power of this planet and use it in concert with the Will of God. The blessings of God’s grace in concert with the magnificence of the planet is the true path. Yes. We must use it more.What was the scariest moment of your life?
Ah, yes. When I came home from seven years of war and found that my dearest sister had been murdered. When I saw her wee grave and knew she had been savaged by a monster. More than any sieges or bombardments, I became a man on that day. So great was my fear and despair that I turned to the balm of God’s grace. I’ve been His truest son ever since.

In Wickedly Dangerous, Wickedly Wonderful, and Wickedly Powerful, people were introduced to the three Baba Yagas, along with their companion dragons, who were disguised as either a huge white pit bull, a massive black Newfoundland, or (in the case of Bella’s Chudo-Yudo named Koshka) a very large Norwegian Forest cat. Readers also met their friends and helpers, The Riders.
The original fairy tales mentioned the Riders too (I don’t just make this stuff up, you know). In the tales, they were called the Black Rider, the Red Rider, and the White Rider, and they were mysterious figures who rode magical horses. Since this is a modern fairy tale, their horses are now motorcycles—but still magical, of course. And the Riders are still a bit of a mystery, even to the Baba Yagas who have known them for many years.
When my editor at Berkley told me she wanted me to come up with a spin-off series for the Riders, I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested in reading about Mikhail Day, Alexei Sun, and Gregori Knight. But based on the response to this first book, I couldn’t have been more wrong. (WHEW) Apparently, their appearances in the three Baba Yaga books were just intriguing enough to leave my readers wanting more. Have I mentioned how much I love my readers?
But that meant I had to come up with a reason for the Riders to have their own stories. So at the end of Wickedly Powerful, I did something really horrid to them. (Bad author. Mean author.) I won’t go into the details, in case you haven’t read the first three books yet—and I do actually consider the Rider books to be a continuation of the Baba Yaga series, although you can read Dangerously Charming without having read the first three—but essentially, at the end of that book, the Riders all went through a tremendous change. That change left them without the identity that had molded their entire very long lives; the Rider series is about how they figure out who they are now, and also discover parts of themselves that have been hidden…and what the heck to do with them.
Of course, there are romances, because what would be the point of writing a paranormal romance without a love interest, right? And the Baba Yagas show up from time to time, because it is still their story too. Plus magic and mysteries and mayhem, just because I can.Dangerously Charming is the story of Mikhail Day, the White Rider. In my head, I always envisioned him as looking like the guy who plays Thor in the movies, and I think my wonderful cover artist did a great job with him. (They even put his white Yamaha on the cover, too.) Mikhail is determined to hide away from the world, and most especially to never, ever come to the rescue of a damsel in distress again. Then Jenna Quinlan literally shows up on his doorstep, running from an ancient fairy curse that has destroyed her family, and things get a lot more complicated very fast.
I’ll confess, it wasn’t easy switching from writing about the Baba Yagas to writing about the Riders…and writing this book just about killed me. Thankfully, despite the unexpected struggle (or maybe because of it), I love the way the book ended up turning out. I hope you do too.

Tour Launch - Dearest Bloodiest Elizabeth by Colette L. Saucier

Disappointment as Inspiration
When I began writing Pulse and Prejudice: The Confession of Mr. Darcy, Vampire, I had no intention of writing a sequel. By the end, however, I had no choice. Toni Morrison once said, “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.” Essentially, my daughter said the same thing to me when I complained that I could not find a true vampire adaptation of my beloved Pride and Prejudice, although Miss Austen’s work had been reworked into dozens of variations, some even involving vampires. I found them all so…disappointing. I wasn’t looking for a “mash-up” as in that zombie atrocity, or a sequel that reveals Mr. Darcy as a vampire after he and Elizabeth had married, or some mistitled variation that veers off on its own vampire plot before revealing that Darcy is not a vampire at all, has little desire, and shares no characteristics with Miss Austen’s character but the name! I wanted to read a paranormal adaptation that remained faithful to Austen, to Darcy and Elizabeth, and to Pride and Prejudice. Oh, and I wanted a few naughty bits as well—a peek at the passion, lust, and desire that simmers just under the surface in the original. (I suppose I should mention that she is an adult and lives in Manhattan lest you think I am discussing scenes of a sensual nature with a fifth grader!)
Therefore, I took my daughter’s—and Ms. Morrison’s—advice and wrote a stand-alone adaptation of the original but primarily from Mr. Darcy’s point of view as if Jane Austen had always conceived his character as a vampire and had simply not revealed it to the reader. Because Miss Austen had written so little of Mr. Darcy other than hints about his character (and where she did, I included those in my narrative so no one would need to be familiar with the original in order to enjoy my adaptation), I had plenty of room to create the world of Mr. Darcy, vampire.
By the time I typed “The End,” however, I knew I had to write Book II: Dearest Bloodiest Elizabeth. Why? Because my daughter insisted! I will not spoil it for you, but there is one detail of my adaptation that my daughter found…disappointing. Thus, I wrote out a detailed plot for a sequel, submitted it for her approval, and then began researching and writing the book SHE wanted to read.
With Dearest Bloodiest Elizabeth, as I was not adapting another author’s work, I possessed complete creative freedom. Hence, it is much darker, bloodier, and sexier than its predecessor. I still maintain complete historical accuracy as the vampire Darcy and his new bride Elizabeth travel to New Orleans immediately after the War of 1812, except of course the paranormal elements.
Yet who’s to say? Perhaps vampires do roam through the streets and alleys of the French Quarter.

Marcella Burnard Guest Blog and Giveaway: Damned If He Does Tour

Hiya! I'm Marcella Burnard, author of Damned If He Does. I want to thank Fang-tastic Books for hosting me and the book today. I thought I'd give you a quick 3 for real things I put in the book and then a couple that I *might* have taken a little fictional license with. But hey. I brought pictures!
5 things about Damned If He Does
1. Fiona’s running trail exists. It is the Burke-Gilman bike/pedestrian trail that runs from Golden Gardens into the heart of Seattle. There’s a scene in the book that happens right beside the Lockspot Café (of Deadliest Catch fame), which is right beside the trail at the Hiram Chittenden Locks. (The Lockspot has killer fish and chips.)
2. Port Townsend is for real the Victorian Seaport of Washington state. The town wanted to be the major port city of Puget Sound - maybe even on the entire west coast of the US. But the railroad stopped short and the ports of Seattle and Tacoma grew while Port Townsend dwindled. It is now a town that’s half farming community and half artist enclave. It is 100% funky. You can stay in a hotel that used to be the town brothel. LINK: http://www.palacehotelpt.com/ I recommend the Miss Kitty room - up on the third floor (no elevators) with a view of the water and of Water Street. Many a writer's retreat has been had there. 3. There’s a diner scene when Fiona and Darsorin go to Anacortes on their way to Port Townsend. That diner is also for real. It’s called Dad’s Diner. Breakfast and lunch only – but the menu is built from the owner’s original restaurant – a BBQ food truck (called Dad's Diner A Go Go). You can order pulled pork hash. Or savory French toast that’s stuffed with jalapeno cream cheese and brisket. It is 100% worth the drive. 4. Archimedes is real. Ish. I took a few liberties, but his real name is Autolycus. Here's a photo.

In real life, he's a short-haired, bob-tailed guy with a personality twenty times his size. He has an opinion about EVERYTHING and has no compunction about giving you that opinion. At volume. Why yes, the world does revolve around him. Thanks so much for asking. ;)
5. I'm sorry, but Fiona's pharmacy is 100% fiction. Seattle used to have a bunch of small, family owned pharmacies. No longer. We're now innundated with large, corporate chain pharmacies. So Fiona's charmed workplace is a throwback - a bit of nostalgia on my part. I can also assure you that Satan's office building is also complete fiction. Unless you talk to some of the long-time residents in Ballard who will freely tell you that all of the new condo buildings replacing single family homes are from the devil. (No, really, there are bumper stickers all over saying "Ballard welcomes its new condominium overlords") Makes me glad I live on a sailboat in the marina - liveaboards are smiled upon indulgently. I have yet to figure out why. After the condo overlord bumper stickers, I'm kind of afraid to ask.
On last bonus fact. There's a tea shop very briefly mentioned in the story. Real. It's where I wrote most of the book - where I write almost all of my books. This is why.

The drink that gets made for Darsorin is 100% real, too. It's called a Fireside Hot Chocolate - a mix of dark chocolate and smoky Lapsang Souchong tea and milk.
Miro http://mirotea.com/ is the name of the shop. You'll find me there most mornings, drinking tea, headphones on, madly typing away. Last set of books, I turned the tea shop into a heroine's tattoo parlor. I haven't told Miro's owner.
