Crimson Death by Laurell k Hamilton Review and Giveaway

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love books featuring Edward that means there is going to be some kickass action...outside the bedroom.
25 books and I'm still hoping for more...LKH never disappoints. This is one of my all time favorite series and I'll continue reading every new book that comes out.
I ignore all the drama with readers complaining about too much sex and not enough story. While I do agree that a few of the books had so much sex that the overall arc of the series and characters didn't seem to advance any, the books are always entertaining, even if I have a hard time keeping all her lovers straight. Good grief it's hard finding time for one significant other let alone a whole houseful of them.
But this one was light on the sex and heavy on the drama, action and character advancement.
We see a whole new side to Edward/Ted in Ireland as he is reunited with an old frenemy in the business of being a badass. I always love learning more about Edward. He is such a mysterious character.
The triumvirate of Anita, Damien and Nathaniel starts experiencing great changes in metaphysics and magic. New powers are appearing, and Nathaniel and Damien really grow in this book as stronger characters and more powerful entities. Nathaniel demonstrates that he's not the soft little kitten everyone always thought he was. Turns out this kitty has claws no one expected. And Damien has more layers than we've ever seen before.
Damien's maker in Ireland, She-Who-Made-Me, AKA M'Lady, has either lost her power or her mind as a steady string of vampires are rising in Ireland and killing innocents leaving bodies for the local law enforcement to find.
Edward is on the scene and wants Anita by his side but the Irish are worried about bringing in Anita's brand of help since she is an executioner, a necromancer and in bed with the vampires.
As Edward fights to get Anita access to Ireland, Anita has to fight to convince Damien to go with her to Ireland. He's terrified of falling back into the clutches of his sadistic maker. To add more drama to the mix, Nathaniel insists on being part of the crew.
Anita has always tried to keep Nathaniel out of harms way, one because he is one of her main loves and also because she feels he is the weakest of her men, the one who needs protecting the most. But he insists on being there as part of their triumvirate and to keep Damien calm and protected.
Just getting to the point where everyone agrees on the trip to Ireland and who is going to Ireland with Anita takes up half the book. And boy is this book long. I do feel some of the Anita inner dialogue and ongoing poly relationship drama could take a sideburner so the main story has more focus.
The drama that ensues once they reach Ireland brings up a few new plot bunnies and character threads that I hope are revisited in future books while also furthering the overall story of Anita's own character growth as well as the changes and growth of powers for her and her men.
But once the story gets to Ireland it really picks up and moves at a quicker pace, with more action, more drama, and more must read pages that you won't want to put down until you find out what the hell happens.
This was a great addition to the series.
I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Cover Reveal Alaskan Den Men Christmas Special

Enjoy three new Alaskan Den Men novels this holiday season from authors Talina Perkins, Amy Lamont and Jennifer Hilt.

Talina Perkins
Release Date: November 29, 2016
No strings attached holiday vacation sex was just what the doctored ordered. While visiting over the holidays, no one prepared med student Sabine Kennedy for Christmas in Alaska. Mesmerized by endless miles of pristine snow, she's downright enchanted by the dark-haired homegrown men decorating the vast snowy landscape of Claw Ridge. Especially one Tyrone “Rone” Wylde. Nothing got a Southern girl's heart racing faster than an amber-eyed man with a voice that could strip panties off in a Christmas blizzard. He’s 100% werebear and she’s 200% willing to try new adventures as long as it’s purely physical.
Naked and challenged to the local winter tradition of the Rum Run within ten minutes of touching down, Sabine has two choices—freeze or get moving. Heat of the mating season was long over, but the second his brother's sister-in-law rolls up with a feisty attitude and enough sass to melt the polar icecaps, Rone is hit with the fever to claim. As the owner of the only bar and bakery in town, Rone also needed all the help he could get. It is a win-win in his book.
When a hidden force strikes out, the fun holiday times are over as the past tears away more than the spirit of Christmas. Dragons, black magick, and murder taint the deeply traditional town so many hold dear. Sabine is forced to face her fears head on and if Rone can’t find a way to chip away at her tough façade to find the soft heart he knows she guards, he’ll lose her forever.

The Magic and Medicine of Herbs with Patricia Lee: Destiny’s Past Virtual Book Tour

Hi. So glad you stopped by. My name is Pat Lee and I wanted to talk about how a secondary character in Destiny’s Past, the Sorceress Narena, uses plants as an aid for her powers.
For millennia, plants and herbs have been utilized for more than just cooking. If you check most modern medicines, the basis of their healing properties stems from plants.
Because Narena lived two thousand years ago, she would have had to rely on what was available in her part of the world (Ancient Persia) to help with healing the sick or injured and also any spells she had to cast. For instance, grapefruit seed extract can be used for fighting infection, except grapefruits didn’t grow in Persia, which incidentally is now Iran and Iraq. Instead, I found out that oil from the Frankincense plant can be used for the same purpose.
Another aspect of how my character used plants is in magical herbalism. There is a great website called Anglefire.com that has a vast list of herbs, their magical uses and various preparation methods. For example if you cut and look at the interior of an apple you see a natural pentagram in the positions of the seeds (never considered that!) Apples are sacred to the Goddess of Wicca and represent fertility and sacred knowledge. Or the herb basil, which soothes tempers between lovers and is used in love incenses and sachets. Carry some in your pocket to attract wealth or put it in the cash registers to attract customers. Basil’s mystical properties are love, wealth, exorcism and protection.
Although my research couldn’t find any factual evidence to support these theories, I’m sure many practicing Wiccans and others would find it interesting or helpful.
In Destiny’s Present, the second book of the Daughters of the Crescent Moon Trilogy, Narena becomes the central character and therefore even more research was done when she needed to use plants for spells. I actually found a registered herbalist who is a member of the American Herbalist Guild to verify which plant Narena could use to create a sleeping draught. Hey, it was for a good reason!
The internet is crammed with websites about herbs and their medicinal properties. My experience with herbs and plants has been through a registered naturopath but if you decide to develop concoctions using plants or herbs, make sure you do your research and be careful. If you have had any success with herbs and their magical usage, I’d be curious, as I’m sure others would be too, about how you made out.

No-nonsense medical examiner, Kelly Richards, relies on the familiar comforts of science and scalpels to get her through the day. So when a not-so-dead guy who claims he's from the past lands on her autopsy table, she considers calling the men in white coats to escort him to a padded room. But Jarek’s old-world ways and hot gaze trick her heart into falling for him—a mistake she swore she’d never make again.
When Jarek, Prince of Leisos, discovers someone he trusts has been slowly poisoning him, he travels to the future in search of a cure. Driven by vengeance, he enlists the help of an impudent scientist to return him to his time.
As they try to find a solution, Kelly struggles with her feelings for Jarek while dodging the police and a visitor from her past.

Amazon BN iBooks KoboExcerpt: Kelly Richards was at her best when surrounded by death. Calm, centered, and confident, she was exactly where she was meant to be. She plucked a pair of surgical gloves from a box on the counter, snapped them on, walked over to the open file on the desk and glanced at the information. Caucasian male, mid to late thirties, died of an apparent drug overdose. Although she couldn't understand or agree with people trying to find answers in chemical substances, she felt a momentary pang of sadness at the needless loss of life. She'd dreamed of becoming an MD because she wanted to help others. Taught to maintain emotional distance from her patients, their pain and grief brought her own inner struggle to the surface—the one buried deep to avoid living it day after day. Unwilling to turn her back on aiding people, she switched careers and became a Medical Examiner to assist families of the dead achieve closure.Working the evening shift alone at the county morgue was preferable to being with people who made idle conversation, mainly about stuff she had no interest in. It also provided a way to prevent coworker's well-meant intentions to set her up. Her job offered escape from them, allowing her to hide from her past. And herself.Five metal drawers occupied the far wall of the room, each containing bodies to be autopsied. Kelly pulled open the door to number three, rolled out the drawer, revealing the man she would work on.Her eyes widened. Most of the time, the prep crew stripped cadavers of their clothing before putting them in the cooler, but if the autopsy couldn't be performed right away, they didn't bother. His clothing wasn't the issue. It was the type of garments that caught her attention. He wore a short sleeve shirt, almost like a tunic, made of a fine, silky material. His loose fitting pants were woven from an odd cloth, not the usual denim or twill. Dust covered dull tan sandals strapped to his feet. He was foreign, exotic looking. Dark brown hair, longer than the norm, barely brushed broad shoulders. His skin was light bronze, yet the file classified him as Caucasian. A frown pursed her lips. Odd. The people in admitting didn't usually make mistakes. This male appeared of mixed Mexican or Spanish descent, maybe Cuban. She leaned closer. Hmmm. His skin didn't have the ashen grey pallor of death either. She reached out to touch his arm.The phone on the desk screamed two jangling blasts.Kelly started, heart pounding against her ribs. Muttering a soft curse, she answered the phone and gave the caller information on a body she'd autopsied earlier. She braced the desk with a trembling hand. She hadn't been here long and working evenings still made her jumpy. Her attention reverted to the file on the body she was supposed to autopsy. What the hell? The measurements were all wrong. No way was the body on the slab five-five. More like about six-three. Did she pull the wrong drawer out? The information at the top of the page confirmed no mistake. There must have been some kind of screw-up. Surely someone didn't switch bodies? Checking the others would be the only way to find out.Kelly marched back to the bank of drawers. As her hand closed around the handle of the second one, a wheezing breath not her own interrupted the silence of the room. She turned in slow motion to the cadaver lying on the slab beside her. Her throat closed. Similar to a scene out of a horror movie, the dead man's chest rose and fell. Not the final gasp of air escaping lungs at death, he inhaled and exhaled in a slow, shallow rhythm.Grabbing the edge of the slab for stability, she shut her eyes. Easy girl. Calm down, it's just your imagination. When you open your eyes, there will be a dead person on the slab, and he will not be breathing."Oh, for heaven's sake. This is ridiculous. He's dead."
"Not yet," the body whispered.

Top Ten Reasons Vampires Rock - Sexy To Go Halloween Tour

Vampires have been popular for a long time. In Victorian times, people feared the dead would rise. They even sold vampire killing kits. Okay, so maybe they weren’t popular back then. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was first published in 1897.
There are countless novels about Dracula and film adaptions. I’m firmly in the Dracula camp and not the Twilight camp. Big difference in vampires! Vampires are contradictory creatures. They are caught between life and death. In a solid body they are more human than ghosts. They are both alluring and capable of murder. They constantly battle their base instincts with their humanity.
Top Ten Reasons Vampires Rock
1. Vampires do not age or die.2. Vampires have heightened senses.3. Vampires are able to heal themselves if they are injured.4. Vampires can often read minds.5. Vampires can have century’s worth of knowledge. They are walking libraries.6. Vampires can fly.7. Vampires have increased strength.8. Vampires don’t have to cook.9. Vampires are active all night (and no insomnia).10. Vampires have an increased sex drive.
If you were a vampire, what else would be a benefit to you? Maybe this guy will give you some ideas….
By the way, vampires are the undead, but we also have a very sexy Grim Reaper – who’s kind of in charge of the dead and all that - in the Halloween edition of Sexy to Go. He’s all about the threesomes…. Hold onto your after-world socks! He makes one couple an offer they just can’t refuse.

Excerpt - Don’t Dare the Reaper by Leigh Ellwood:
Sue couldn’t mistake the look of longing in the Reaper’s eyes. She glanced at Cal and realized he’d noticed it, too.Damn. He had to be good-looking, too. Right after their heart to heart about too many bodies crowding the bed.She turned away, trying not to watch the Reaper lick his lips. “Can you tell us why it feels now like our bodies are functioning like when we were alive?” she asked. “We didn’t have beating ‘hearts’ earlier.”“Yes, actually that’s a good sign, depending on your definition of good,” Gil said, and Sue chanced another glance at him. The Reaper, while he hadn’t appeared fazed by their nudity earlier, now looked as though he viewed them with new eyes. She followed what she surmised was an appreciative gaze at her husband’s erection.Cal stroked the small of her back, sending chills up her spine. A fleeting vision of Gil’s mouth pursed around one of her nipples while Cal took her from behind faded as quickly as she conjured it. The vision distracted her enough to require Gil to repeat his revelation to them.“I said it’s not yet time to die, for either of you,” he said. “The reason you’re feeling more, ah…complete is because you’re slowly regaining your life force.”“How long before we’re back?” Cal asked.Gil shrugged. “I can send you back right this second, it’s just…”Sue arched an eyebrow.“…when you return you’re both going to be roughed up rather badly. It could be a while before you’re able to resume the level of sexual activity you’re used to.”“So, you’re giving us time to finish, is what you’re saying,” Cal finished the thought.“You’ve had one hell of a night, no pun intended.” Gil smiled. “You’re entitled to some pleasure.”

Excerpt:
Wiping the crumbs off his jeans, Finn reached into his backpack and threw an apple at me, which I caught with a deft hand. “Nice catch,” he said, grinning. I flung the apple up into the air and caught it in my other hand. “I played third base. Little League.” “You mean baseball?” I nodded. “Never seen a game myself.” I gaped at Finn. “You mean you live in Chicago, and you’ve never been to a Cubs game?” He shrugged. “Not interested.” Finn’s eyes lit up, and he shoved me playfully with his shoulder. “Now hurling. That’s a good game.”
“Well, they’re totally different. That’s not even a fair comparison,” I said with a sniff.
“Fair enough,” Finn said, wistful. “Really, nothing can compare with hurling.” I laughed. “Moiré tried to explain the rules to me once, but she lost me after hurley stick.” “Oh, it’s simple, really.” Finn jumped down and rummaged around the rubble until he found a large branch. He swung it, the stick cutting through the air, slowly at first, but then with more force. Finn’s chest muscles rippled between the flaps of his leather jacket, and my blood pulsed in my ears at the sight of him, dancing from foot to foot as he practiced his swing. “Now the point of hurling,” Finn began, “is to use this stick, the hurley stick.” He raised the old branch in the air. “To get a little ball called a sliotar either over or under your opponent’s goalpost.” Finn picked up a handful of small rocks and, using his “hurley,” sent a pebble whizzing over the stone wall, inches from my head. “Hey, watch it!” Finn smiled up at me. “You with me so far?” I nodded. “Now,” Finn said. “If the ball flies under the goalpost into the net, it’s worth three points.” Finn sent another pebble skittering against the wall, right next to my boot. “But you have to get it past the keeper, and that can be a challenge.” His eyes glittered at me as he swung his stick again. He threw a rock up in the air and with a loud thwack sent it zooming over the wall. I held out my hand and caught the stone, the look on Finn’s face making up for the sting of impact. “And he’s out!” I cried, jumping off the wall and doing a mock victory dance. “Cubs win! Cubs win! Wooooooooooooo!” Finn stalked over to me and grabbed my fist. “Will you settle down!” he said, attempting to pry the pebble from my grip. “I’m trying to teach you a three-thousand-year-old art form and you’re nattering on about the fecking Cubs.” I giggled, snatching his hurley stick from his hands. “Technical foul!” Finn barked behind me, but I sprinted away, swinging the hurley over my head as I climbed the wall. “Get back here, you brat!” Finn bolted after me so quickly, he lost his footing on the stone wall and tumbled to the ground. I laughed as he came to his feet, his hair loose, chasing me. “It’s the bottom of the ninth, bases are loaded!” Finn made a snatch for the stick, but I feigned to the right.
“Tanner’s up to bat.” I climbed a set of old stairs to nowhere and tossed up the stone. I popped out my hips and, following through on the turn, sent the stone flying over the hill and down the cliffs below. I jumped down, swinging my baseball/hurley bat. “Homerun by Tanner! And the Cubs win the pennant!” Finn smacked into me, and I collapsed to the ground, his wide body over mine as he grasped for the stick. “Dammit, O’Connell!” I gasped beneath Finn, his whole weight crushing my chest. “Now I knowfor a fact hurling is not a contact sport!” I laughed as I squirmed to get away, holding out the stick just beyond his reach. “Neither is baseball!”
With a devilish grin, Finn tickled my armpit, and I curled up in a fit of giggles. He made a grab for my wrist, pinning me to the ground, and his gray eyes danced as he looked down at me. My laughter faded, and running my other hand through his hair, I pulled his face to mine. He kissed me, a low moan rumbling deep in his throat. Finn nipped my bottom lip with his teeth, and my back arched as our hips melded together, my better judgment forgotten. He slid his arm beneath my shoulders and pulled me close against him, kissing me long and hard, and I gasped, gulping for air as he lowered his mouth to my neck.

Growing up on military bases, she found solace in her local library and later decided to make a living sharing the wonders of literature to poor, unsuspecting college freshmen. My Top 5 Vampires- by Marie Johnston

When I made the transfer from fantasy nut to die-hard romance reader, I started with vampires. I’m still with vampires. I write vampires. There will always be vampires! I haven’t read all the vampire books out there, of course, but I wanted to highlight the top 5 vampires in my reading history (in no particular order).
1. Kyrian of Thrace, Night Pleasures by Sherilyn Kenyon—He was my first, the vampire who carried me over to romance completely. Maybe I read vampires before this, but I don’t remember. There was no one before Kyrian, and I know exactly why he grabbed me. Bad boys get the glory, but show me a good guy who acts like an ass once in a while, and I’m putty.
2. Marcus Cage, I Thirst for You by Susan Sizemore—I rarely save physical books, but this one I still have. Marcus is a good guy, if you ignore him kidnapping Josephine. What makes this book a keeper for me is the scene where they—pardon my middle school vernacular—do it. I love how Sizemore pushed them past their resistance into the backseat of the vehicle.
3. Zhadist, Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward—Let me hold myself back from gushing about the Warden. Because I will, for a long time. I l-o-v-e her work, and I love Zhadist’s story and how it’s carried on through the series. He’s still Zhadist, not a case of hey, found my mate, and look-at-that I’m a jovial fella. Nope. He’s still the same tortured, loyal, deeply caring vampire we adore.
4. Xhex, Lover Mine by J.R. Ward—I liked her as soon as I read her. This story was deeply touching, and seriously, the sh-t she went through? But like Zhadist, Xhex isn’t suddenly hanging up her guns and planning her next macramé project. She’s still the same tortured, loyal, deeply caring, completely badass vampire John Matthew adores.
5. Lothaire, Lothaire by Kresley Cole—He breaks my good guy trend. Lothaire is not a good guy. He was such an ass to Ellie, yet he was so completely enjoyable to read and his character arc stretched across the sky. But—trend alert—he was still arrogant, crazy Lothaire at the end of the book.

Involuntarily, she shivered. That voice! His smell! Coupled with his looks—he was dangerous on so many levels. She flashed again, two more miles up the trail. Her logical mind informed her that he’d followed her twice already. She hadn’t even known it was possible. He appeared in front of her, an eyebrow arched. “Did you have something to do with the humans’ deaths?”At the mention of her parents, she went wild. For all the good it did.She punched, she kicked, she kneed. All easily deflected. He clasped her arms to pull her toward him and spin her around. Both of her legs pumped and flailed, trying to kick back into his shins or loosen his grip, but he restrained her like it was something he did every day. From his domineering presence and grim demeanor, maybe he did.He jolted her so hard her teeth clattered. It stunned her into momentary stillness. When she tensed to start all over again, he repeated the movement—harder. Her breath whooshed out like she’d been heimliched. She struggled to inhale against his vice-like grip. He was an immobile wall at her back. Humiliatingly enough, she wanted to seek comfort in that wall. Tears pricked her eyes. She sniffled. His grip loosened, then tightened again. “Don’t think that’ll work on me,” he sneered into her ear.
The dam broke and sob after sob escaped her.
