Meeting a Monster -A True Story
When I was younger, a group of newly acquired friends and I tried to think of something eerie to do on Halloween night. Little did we know, that we would see something truly terrifying that would change our lives forever.Like many teenagers, we decided that visiting a cemetery was just about the perfect way to give ourselves a good scare. I had just moved to town, and my new friends insisted that there was a glowing tombstone in an old, run down graveyard off a gravel road about thirty miles outside of town. So, we piled in a small, two-door car and drove, excited about the prospects of having some good ghost stories to tell on the way.The road we were driving on was a narrow, two-lane service road with lots of potholes, hills, and curves. The locals had spread rumors that “devil-worshipers” often held ceremonies along that road, and one of the girls, who was sitting in the back seat, seemed to be enjoying herself as she recounted the spooky stories. She spoke of how the Satanists skinned animals alive, and how there were strange sightings in the area. Her last story was about the glowing gravestone; she claimed it was cursed. We drove farther and farther from town, well over thirty miles, and I fidgeted in my seat. I was beginning to have second thoughts about going so far out into the night, especially since I hadn’t let my mother know where I was going. Back then, we didn’t have mobile phones. If something unexpected or dreadful happened, there would’ve been no one around to help, and my mother wouldn’t have even known where to look.I shook my head, trying to shake off my growing apprehension as silence suddenly fell over the car like a soft, suffocating blanket. I cleared my throat to speak up but thought better of it. I didn’t want to be the one who chickened out and insist on turning back. The car’s headlights pierced the darkness of the night and bugs thumped into the windshield as we continued to drive along. That’s when it happened. The car came to a screeching halt. There, in the middle of the road, sat a coyote. The driver of the car, a sixteen-year-old girl with short curly hair named Angie (her name has been changed to protect her identity), honked at the coyote. To our amazement, it didn’t move. Instead, it lazily looked in our direction as if it had nothing better to do than sit in the middle of the road, blocking our way.She honked again. The coyote blinked. The lights of the car reflected on its retina, causing its eyes to glow a dull shade of red. When it did not budge this time, Angie yelled and honked again, but this time she held her hand down so that the horn blared into the night air.It was then that the coyote stood on its two hind legs and turned toward us, a tall looming monster with sharp teeth and penetrating eyes.Angie’s hand slid from the steering wheel as we all sat in amazement at this towering beast. It seemed to be looking us over, mulling over what it would do next.  Was he contemplating eating us?I couldn’t find my voice. All I could do was sit there, slack-jawed and bewildered.Just when I thought we were going to have to flee for our lives, the creature turned and ran away, its movements akin to that of a running human.Everyone in the car finally found their voices to scream! Angie whipped a U-turn, and we hightailed it back to town.

Even today, over twenty years later, the vision of that creature is still clearly etched upon my memory. That was the day that I began questioning how magical and mysterious our world truly is.  -Laura C. Cantu About the Author:

Interview with Collin Piprell

* What inspired your story?
Thinking about the “grey goo scenario” – where self-replicating nanobots turn the planetary surface into nothing but more of themselves – I found myself trying to imagine how anyone or anything could ever survive such a disaster. Plus I’d encountered intriguing notions related to nanotechnology, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, virtual realities, theories of complexity and emergent order. As though against my will – I’d never thought of writing a science-fiction novel – characters and settings began to emerge in my mind and I wrote some stuff.
Wisely enough, I then relegated this stuff to a bottom drawer and went back to other writing projects. One of these I showed to a good friend who hated it; he asked me whether I didn’t have anything else to show him. So I dug out some chapters of what was to become MOM, the first novel in the Magic Circles series, and he claimed that this was what I should be doing.
I didn’t really believe him but, what with one thing and another, including his offer to let me use his lakeside cabin in the mountains of Japan for a solitary writer’s retreat from all the chaos of my life in Bangkok, I went back to MOM with a will. And here we are today.
I knew I had a series on my hands the moment I wrote MOM’s concluding chapters. They pretty well demanded I discover what happened next.
Genesis 2.0 is what happened next.

* Is the setting to your story important?
Yes, to the extent that Earth’s biosphere/noosphere is evolving as the narrative unfolds, and the worlds I’ve created are an essential part of that story. But the settings as they correspond to present-day political and cultural entities are not. It isn’t especially important that some parts of the story are set where the eastern seaboard of the USA, the eastern seaboard of Thailand, and Utah used to be. Circumstances have changed on Earth to the point such descriptions don’t mean much at the time the Magic Series story unfolds.
* Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
My first ambition was to be a garbage man. In case that strikes you as unlikely, I refer you to the following post for an explanation: ‘How to write a novel that flies’ http://www.collinpiprell.com/airplanes-and-novels/
* When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
I’d been teaching at a Bangkok university and freelancing as a hobbyist feature writer/journalist. My income from writing had approached that of my university salary, plus a local publisher had asked to see the manuscript of what was to be Bangkok Knights, my first book.
One night I was having dinner at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand, and two people at my table turned out to be European doctors with laissez-passers from a rebel army to cross the border into northern Burma and, on horseback, visit a bunch of remote villages. They asked whether I’d like to come along. Of course I wanted to go, but I’d be in the middle of university exams, and there was no way I could abandon my students. So I thanked them and said no, at the same time proclaiming to one and all that this would be the last time I’d ever have to say no to such a proposition.
Shortly thereafter I gave the university three months’ notice and asked for a letter from a magazine to support my application for a foreign correspondent’s visa and work permit. One morning not too long after that, I awoke one morning to the amazing thought that, after years of telling people that’s what I wanted to be, I was actually a writer. I had to run that notion past myself a few times, testing it for hints of dream or delusion, but no. I was a writer.
Of course now nearly everyone’s a writer, so it might not have had the same impact today. J
* How long did it take to get your first book published?
Not very long. A British doctor in Bangkok read the manuscript for Bangkok Knights and passed it to a publisher friend with the recommendation he take it. But the market for fiction was very different in those days – there were far fewer writers and, I believe, more readers.
* What were your goals as an author and have any of them come true?
I’d like to believe that my skills as a writer improve the more I write, and I aim to make each successive story better than the one before. So far, I think I’m succeeding in that. That’s not to say I’m confident this is the way things are going to turn out as I write. On the contrary, I typically suffer doubts and hyper-critical reactions to my drafts while they’re in progress. But I keep hammering at them till they feel as right as I can make them.
More specifically, I’d like to see how far the Magic Circles series goes before returning to other novels I have in mind.
* What genres do you normally write in?
I’ve written both comic thrillers and science fiction. But I don’t think of myself as a genre writer. I want to feel free to write any story that interests me in any style I choose.
* What was the first book you ever published?
I’ve already mentioned Bangkok Knights, http://www.collinpiprell.com/collinpiprell/old_site/bangkok_knights.htm which is a collection of short stories that had earlier appeared in local publications augmented by a series of longer stories written specifically for the book. The stories include overlapping themes and characters. A plot-like development also unfolds behind the scenes. The nameless narrator, who seems to maintain an ironic distance from the foibles and pratfalls of the male characters (the women are the stronger, more mature characters), himself is finally seen to fall even more radically victim to all the pitfalls. Asia Books, its last publisher, described the book as a novel, and, though it has an unconventional structure, I guess it is.
Here’s my backlist, most of it out of print:
* MOM (Magic Circles Vol. 1, Common Deer Press, 2017).* Kicking Dogs (Bangkok: Asia Books, 2000; bookSiam, 1995; Editions Duang Kamol, 1991), a novel. (Available in a self-published version on Amazon.) https://www.amazon.com/Kicking-Dogs-Collin-Piprell/dp/1452802726* Bangkok Knights (Bangkok: Asia Books 2001; Bangkok: Editions Duang Kamol, 1989, 2nd ed. 1991; published as Too Many Women by bookSiam, 1995). Out of print.* Yawn (Bangkok: Asia Books, 2000), a novel. Out of print.* Bangkok Old Hand (Bangkok: Post Books, 1993), a collection of stories and essays. Out of print.* Thailand's Coral Reefs (Bangkok: White Lotus, 1995). Photos by Ashley J. Boyd. Natural history and conservation of reefs. Out of print.* A Diving Guide to Thailand (Singapore: Marshall Cavendish; USA: Hippocrene Books, 2000; Singapore: Times Editions, 1994). Photos by Ashley J. Boyd.* Thailand: The Kingdom Beneath the Sea (Bangkok: Artasia Press, 1990). Photos by Ashley J. Boyd.  Out of print.* National Parks of Thailand, in collaboration with Denis Gray and Mark Graham (Bangkok: IFCT, 1991; 2nd ed. 1994). Out of print.

* What was the craziest thing you’ve ever done when it came to a storyline in your book?
A short, vaguely ‘magic realist’ novel I’ve written has the story itself writing the main protagonist, who is himself ostensibly the author of the book. If you want to know more, you’ll have to read the novel, should I find a publisher for it.

Excerpt 3 (675 words)
when you’re hot
“DO THE TOES still hurt?”“Not really.” Dee Zu looks down at her naked body, smeared with dried mud from the cave, scratched by thorns, burned by satrays, bruised by who knows what. “But I’m filthy. I’ve never been this dirty.” Cisco sits beside her, also naked, also the victim of violent encounters with his world. He’s enthralled by a symphony of odors and scents, some of them Dee Zu’s. What he smells now bears scant resemblance to what he was given in his encounters with this woman in GR Worlds. “Generated realities can appear realer than real,” Leary once told him, back in his holotank in the Mall. “But real reality still offers something the qubits don’t.” And he’d been right. He misses Leary. That’s the Leary he spoke to in Aeolia not many hours before, the same one, more or less, who died in Living End a few hours before that. Cisco remains amazed at all that has happened since he fled the disintegration of Eastern Seaboard, USA (ESUSA) Mall. Could that have been only two days ago? Dee Zu is charming when she wrinkles her nose. “You stink,” she tells him. Keeping an eye on their surrounds, Cisco is engaged in an internal confab, a Lode-assisted orientation. Bacterial wastes, he learns, are responsible for most of the smells. His WalkAbout also conveys grounds for surprise that he and Dee Zu are so thoroughly colonized by bacteria this soon after escaping the Mall. It’s surprising that any bacteria survived the PlagueBot. For sure, few survived internal mall operations management, where all but the most essential bio and machine microorganisms were anathema. Admit the wrong bio-engineered or mutant virus, or a feral nanobot self-replicator, and it would have quickly sterilized the malls, the last human enclaves on Earth, of higher biological life. But never mind all the defenses, all MOM’s neurotically careful management. Now the malls, both ESUSA and ESSEA, maybe the last of them, lie breached and ruined. Yeah, well.Dee Zu conducts a nuzzling investigation into local species of Cisco stink. He finds this at once embarrassing and, despite residual shock from what they’ve just witnessed, nice. Here they are, both of them still alive and pretty well here in this anomalous patch of life on the other side of the planet from their former home. However alien this still-smoldering oasis with its tame PlagueBot and all its subterranean installations lying wrecked beneath them, what lies beyond the border, back the way they came yesterday, looks worse still. Much worse. It could be another planet, or a GR World gone bad — the type of nightmare, in fact, that both Cisco and Dee Zu, in their capacity as Worlds UnLtd test pilots, were trained to identify and, where possible, fix.*Dee Zu also stinks, much of it a good stink. Cisco inhales the heady perfume and feels himself invaded with power.“Maybe you should put that away for now.” Dee Zu points and little Cisco points back.“Come on,” Big Cisco gives her his most boyish grin. “Let’s do it. Wet sex.”Dee Zu is Dee Zu, after all, and she straddles him without further ado. This isn’t entirely reckless, mind you, since they do it sitting up so Cisco can watch behind her while she watches behind him. It doesn’t last long, but it’s good. It has an urgency and depth he never experienced when they did it in the Worlds, no matter how imaginatively. Maybe the threat of imminent death, so recently demonstrated, has something to do with the way things go. *They sit there a bit longer, Dee Zu’s legs still locked behind Cisco. He breathes deep of her, buries his face in her hair. Meanwhile she scents this strange world, still burning in patches, smelling of charred wood and flesh and things. She feels good. At the same time she continues to watch. And this world, their world now, watches back. Though it’s anything but clear who or what might be watching. Or from where.

About the Author:
Collin Piprell is a Canadian writer resident in Thailand. He has also lived in England, where he did graduate work as a Canada Council Doctoral Fellow (later, a Social Sciences and Humanities Fellow) in politics and philosophy at Pembroke College, Oxford; and in Kuwait, where he learned to sail, water-ski and make a credible red wine in plastic garbage bins.
In earlier years, he worked at a wide variety of occupations, including four jobs as a driller and stope leader in mines and tunnels in Ontario and Quebec. In later years he taught writing courses at Thammasat University, Bangkok, freelanced as a writer and editor, and published hundreds of articles on a wide variety of topics (most of these pieces are pre-digital, hence effectively written on the wind). He is also the author of short stories that appeared in Asian anthologies and magazines, as well as five novels (a sixth forthcoming in 2018), a collection of short stories, a collection of occasional pieces, a diving guide to Thailand, another book on diving, and a book on Thailand’s coral reefs. He has also co-authored a book on Thailand’s national parks.
Common Deer Press is publishing the first three novels in his futuristic Magic Circles series.
Collin has another short novel nearly ready to go, something he only reluctantly describes as magic realism. Less nearly ready to go are novels he describes as a series of metaphysical thrillers. Not to mention several Jack Shackaway comic thrillers, follow-ups to Kicking Dogs. He also has a half-finished letter to his grandmother, dated 10 October 1991, saying thanks for the birthday gift.

Excerpt:
Lucien heard the intake of her breath, and then the soft pads of her steps approach him. He’d not wanted to ask for help but desperately needed it. The wound in his arm shifted between extreme pain to numbness. Both were equally bad and drained his energy. He knew exactly where she had hid. If the pain wasn’t so bad, he would’ve smiled. He was impressed with her stealth. Attempting a deep breath, he looked up to see what quality of wench lived among these woods. She would have to be single—most likely homely at best. No husband would live here much less allow his wife to wander these woods alone. She would become enchanted with him. Mortal women always did and it ended with their broken hearts—which is why he avoided mortals entirely. An eternal, especially a clan leader, could not connect themselves romantically to a lesser being. To ensure the continuation of the species of purebloods it was why eternals only procreate with eternal. This fact reminded him of Alastair’s betrayal, adding to his pain.He reluctantly raised his eyes to inspect her. His breath caught. Thick raven dark locks framed an ivory face with flame red lips, while empathetic emerald eyes surveyed his condition. Wearing a white peasant’s dress, she appeared ethereal moving toward him through the mist. His breath came out in a rush, and his pulse seemed to scream within his skull. Without a word she positioned herself under his bad shoulder and bore his weight. He was astonished a body so small could hold him up. Silently she guided him along. He asked her no questions putting all his energy into moving. The pain was good though. It meant the liquid silver hadn’t been released encasing him in a frozen prison.
The scent of plants he hadn’t encountered in years quickly assaulted his nose. Then the source came into view—a small cottage surrounded by herbs. That’s when it all came into perspective. The woman was a witch, and one of the ancient arts. He stiffened with the realization. She looked up at him with luminous green eyes framed by thick lashes with nothing but concern. He considered he might be wrong. His internal alarm had not sounded. Nevertheless, he’d seen ghastly things done by witches and their herbs, especially the three-prominent species framing her stoop. The pain of the silver arrowhead imbedded in his stiffened muscles and screamed in protest and all his previous thought became a blur.
About the Author:
Bri Clark is a real example of redemption and renewal. Growing penniless in the South, Bri learned street smarts while caring for her brother in a broken home. She watched her mother work several jobs to care for their small family. Once her brother could fend for himself, Bri moved on to a series of bad choices including leaving school and living on her own.
Rebelliousness was a strong understatement to describe those formative years. As a teenager, her wakeup call came from a fight with brass knuckles and a judge that gave her a choice of shaping up or spending time in jail. She took that opportunity and found a way to moved up from the streets. She ended up co-owning an extremely successful construction business. She lived the high life until the real estate crash when she lost everything.
She moved west and found herself living with her husband and 4 kids in a 900 square foot apartment. For 10 years she filled her time, writing, blogging, advocating and mentoring women in business, and running a successful marketing company while sharing her southern culture. Her unique background gives her writing a raw sensibility. She understands what it takes to overcome life's obstacles.
Then in 2015 she came home to her beloved TN. While there she picked back up her spiritual gifts of an intuitive psychic medium. With the help of her guides it's her greatest goal to be a vessel for good and to serve those that need help either through her writings or her books.

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Avon Books
Date of Publication: 9/26/2017
ISBN: 9780062468956ASIN: 0062468952
Number of pages: 400
Tagline: Irresistible chemistry and thrilling suspense combine in this electrifying new installment in New York Times bestselling author Lynsay Sands’ Argeneau series
Book Description:
One hundred and twenty-five years is a long time to nurse a crush. That’s how long it’s been since Beth Argenis first met Cullen “Scotty” MacDonald, and he instantly became the star of her most X-rated dreams. Back then, he was rescuing her from a Rogue Immortal. Now Beth’s a Rogue Hunter—a damn good one. She doesn’t need saving anymore, despite what Scotty thinks. What she does need is the fierce, wild desire that finally erupts between them.
Scotty has hesitated to claim Beth as his own. But one explosive kiss confirms what he’s long suspected: She’s his life mate. But Beth is tough, fearless, beautiful…and in immortal danger. Unless he wants to lose her forever, he’ll have to rethink everything he once believed about love and destiny as well as confront an enemy who’s terrifyingly close.
Amazon     BN     IndieBound     GoodreadsChapter One "Tybo, it's time to move," Beth said into her headset as she watched the garage door drop closed.
"And thank God for that. We've been camping out here all night in the cold and mud. I'm done in," came the complaint over the headset.
"We all are," Beth said grimly. "So quit your bitchin' and move into position or I'll come find you and kick your arse."
"God, Beth, I love how your accent comes out when you're annoyed. It's so Eliza Doolittle." Tybo's voice was smooth and full of laughter this time. It made her suspect he'd complained just to get a reaction out of her, especially when he added, "I like it best when you talk dirty. It just revs my engine."
"Dirty?" she asked with surprise.
"Ummm hmmm," Tybo crooned. "You said arse."
Beth covered the mouthpiece of her headset as a bark of laughter slipped from her lips. She hadn't worked with Tybo long, but was quickly learning the man was a character. Shaking her head, she removed her hand from her mouthpiece and said, "Stop flirting with me, you cheeky bastard, and move into posit—"
A choked sound and the rustle of cloth from her earpiece made her stop talking and listen instead before she said, "Tybo? Tybo?"
Beth paused a heartbeat to wait for a response, and then said, "Valerian? Do you see Tybo?" Silence was her only answer.
"Ah hell," she muttered. Slipping out from behind the tree she'd been using for cover, Beth started moving quickly in Tybo's direction. She had the dart gun she'd been issued in one hand, but her sword in the other. It was the sword that saved her. Before Beth reached the spot where she'd ordered Tybo to take cover, the dart gun was abruptly kicked from her grip. She never saw it coming, but reacted instinctively, sword hand coming up and swinging hard even as she turned toward her assailant. She caught him at the base of the throat where it met his shoulder. The blade went deep, slicing better than halfway through his neck.
Beth yanked it out, grimacing at the sucking sound it made. She watched the man topple sideways to the ground, and then quickly wiped the blade off on her attacker's coat before grabbing up the dart gun she'd dropped. Shooting him with it to ensure he didn't heal and rise too quickly, she then turned and continued forward. Beth found Tybo on his back in the mud some twelve feet from where she'd been attacked. There was a knife in his chest.
"You should have moved when I told you to," Beth muttered as she bent to tug the ivory-handled knife from his heart. He didn't open his eyes and sit up at once, but she hadn't expected him to. He'd need some time to heal. Beth reached into the satchel hanging at her side, pulled out a bag of blood and then opened his mouth. She had to massage his upper gums briefly to get his fangs to slide out, but then she slapped the bag to them.
Leaving Tybo where he lay, Beth straightened and glanced around before continuing along the path. Valerian had been positioned another thirty feet ahead in the woods surrounding the house. She found the hunter exactly where she expected, also with a knife to the heart. As she removed it, Beth noted that it was a duplicate of the knife that had been in Tybo's chest.
Tossing the blade aside, Beth slapped a bag of blood onto Valerian's fangs as well before turning to peer through the bushes at the house they'd been watching since just after sunset. It had been empty by the time they'd got their orders from Mortimer at the Enforcer house and made their way here. The inhabitants, a rogue immortal and his minions, had already been gone by then, probably to hunt up new victims. Beth, Tybo, and Valerian had sat here awaiting their return for most of the night and now it was almost dawn, but a few minutes ago a van had pulled into the driveway. The garage door had opened, the van had pulled in, and the door had closed without them ever seeing how many people were in the vehicle. Which was why Beth had ordered Tybo to approach the house. They needed to know how many rogues they were dealing with and what the situation was. It was vital to their approach. If there were innocent mortals who needed saving, for instance, it would affect how they handled everything.
It seemed, however, that their presence hadn't gone unnoticed, and one of the returning rogues had managed to slip out unseen and sneak up on them. Her question now was whether that was the only one. Had the newly turned rogue just been sent out to check around and happened upon them? Or had they been spotted and he was sent out to take care of them? And if so, how many others, if any, were out scouring the trees surrounding the house, looking for them? Aside from whether there were innocents around, Beth also needed to know many rogues were inside besides Walter Simpson, the master rogue of this group. Unfortunately, getting those answers and doing anything with them would be hard since her entire, and very tiny, team was now incapacitated except for herself.
Cursing under her breath, Beth took a quick glance around and then moved to the nearest tree and swiftly climbed up into the branches. She settled on a large, sturdy branch fifteen feet up, took a moment to be sure that she had a good view of the surrounding area and that no one could sneak up on her, and then slid her cell phone from her pocket.
Mortimer answered on the first ring. "Problem?"

Character Interview - Dragon’s First Rule by Silver Milan

Character Interview
I heard that the dragons of Midnight keep vampires as slaves, is that true? And if so, how does that work?
Jett: It's completely true. Dragons and vampires are always fighting, and we captured many slaves in the last war. Vampires make excellent guards, and are good at performing the hard labor needed to maintain our city. Though keeping them fed has proven challenging at times.
Don't you feel at all guilty about keeping slaves in the modern age…
Jett: Not at all. I don’t really think of them as slaves, but rather prisoners of war who serve us on a contract basis. When their contracts expire, we release them. And considering how long vampires live, a fifty-year contract is quite literally a drop in the bucket.

What is it like to be a king?
Jett: It has its positives and negatives. On the one hand, I have the power to do anything I want.
Treasure hoards, manpower… you name it. On the other, it's lonely at the top.
Ariel, how did you end up in Midnight, the capital city of the dragons of North America?
Ariel: I quite literally stumbled into the city. I was being chased by members of the pride that turned me into a lion shifter against my will, and I found myself racing up the shoulder of a mountain. The lions stopped their pursuit, I couldn't figure out why. And then when Jett met me at the entrance to a tunnel, I started figuring things out.
Would you classify your relationship as conventional?
Ariel: Not at all. A dragon shifter and a lioness? There's nothing conventional about that. But I guess neither of us could settle for ordinary human beings.
Jett: She's right. A lioness is the perfect balance to my inner dragon. She can handle anything I dish out, both verbally, and physically.
Ariel: I like how I feel safe with him, like no one can harm me when he's at my side.
Who do you admire most in history?
Ariel: That would be Jett of course. He's done so much for help unite the dragons and other shifters of the world. They protect us and the humans from the vampires, and yet they never get any thanks, because ordinary humans don't even know they exist.
Jett: I'd have to say I admire Queen Elizabeth I. Mostly because I've met her. I was there when Shakespeare performed in front of her Court.
What's it like to be so old?
Jett: Eventually you grow world-weary. It's why I'm so thankful that I met Ariel. With her, everything old is new. She makes me feel young again.
What bad habits annoy you the most?
Jett: Probably lying. Having grown up on court intrigue, I can't stand it, and I can usually detect a lie from a mile away.
Ariel: People who pick their teeth in public.
Jett (dryly): Very insightful, Ariel.
Ariel (equally sarcastic): Why thank you, my dragon.

Do you have any fears or phobias?
Ariel: Losing myself to my inner beast, and becoming a lioness forever.
Jett: Losing Ariel.
If you could own anything in the world, what would it be?
Ariel: A pony.
Jett: Ariel. She is my greatest treasure. There is nothing else I'd rather have.
Ariel: Sheesh, go and make me feel bad about my pony remark.

Jett. He charms her and promises help, but can she trust him? After all, he is the King of the Dragons. Why would such a powerful man come to the aid of a common girl?

Excerpt:
Ariel stared into the darkness. She could see a surprisingly good distance inside, thanks to her enhanced vision. Nothing stood out to her, and the terminus of the passage was lost to the murk. The darkness seemed welcoming, somehow. It seemed safe to turn her back on the cave, and she did so, gazing out from the precipice to survey the valley in front of her. Ordinarily, she would have thought the wide, tree-filled expanse so beautiful. She loved nature and hiking. It was one of the reasons she had come out here in the first place.  But she felt nothing now, only emptiness. She wondered if she would ever be able to appreciate such beauty again, given what she had become. She glanced at the cave once more. Again, she felt drawn to it, but she shook her head. Not going inside. Though she was incredibly upset, she didn't have a death wish. There might be a bear or something sleeping inside. Or maybe a dragon, like that stupid sign had said. Wouldn't surprise her anymore, not in the least: she was being hunted by lions who could become humans, after all. And she was one of those lions. For now, all she wanted was to get away from those hunters. She would stay here for a few hours, long enough to be sure the animals had gone away. And then she would climb back down and get the hell out of here. And what then? Well, she figured she would have to live out the rest of her days in the woods. It would be a solitary life, away from the technology that drove modern society. She would have to give up all her friends and family. Maybe she could get a sat-phone or something, so she could still talk to her family occasionally. But she couldn't return, at least not until she could get the beast inside of her under control. That was something she doubted would ever be possible. Then again, moments ago she had exerted her will on the lioness and prevented her from ripping out of her skin. That was something, at least. A reason to hope. She sat down on the precipice and settled in for a long wait. She decided she would stay here until nightfall. That would be the best time to retreat, since her beast operated best in the dark. But so do the other lions, she reminded herself.Maybe that wasn't such a good idea. Well, she'd sit here for a while, and make up her mind on what she wanted to do. Maybe a minute passed before she heard a voice behind her. "Well hello."Ariel spun in fright; when she saw the man standing at the cave mouth, she momentarily forgot all fear, forgot where she was and how she got there, and instead simply stared, spellbound. Standing in front of the cave entrance towered the most beautiful man she had ever seen. He had to be at least six and a half feet tall. He was too gorgeous to be a model. Too breathtaking to be a movie star. She got butterflies in her stomach just looking at him. Where to begin? His hair… oh yes, his hair. It was as if someone had taken several bars of gold and melted them down to form the bouncy curls that fell around that spectacular face. His eyes were a fiery gold like his hair, almost unnaturally so. They were almond-shaped and beguiling, shining with intelligence. His broad, bold nose jutted aristocratically from his face, perfect in every way. The plump lips of his chiseled, sensuous mouth had such gorgeous curves—if any lips were created for kissing, it was those. He had a strong, aristocratic jaw that matched his nose, and blemish-free, smooth bronze skin. His thickly corded neck disappeared into the collar of a black and gold dress shirt, whose sleeves were rolled back to the elbows, revealing his muscular forearms. Black and gold tribal dragons were tattooed from wrists to elbows on each arm. The shirt did little to conceal the outline of his wide, powerful shoulders, and the hard muscles of his pecs that pressed out from beneath the fabric. She could make out the lines of a six-pack. A designer belt cinched his lean waist, and below that he wore dark-washed, fitted jeans. Her eyes lingered on his groin, where—Ariel blinked as she realized the brazenness of what she was doing, and the spell broke. She quickly lifted her eyes back to his face. The beautiful man's lips were upturned in amusement. She realized she was stark naked and quickly covered her breasts with one arm, twisting her torso away and covering her bum with her other hand. She kept her gaze on him, staring at him over one shoulder. "What are you looking at?" she said."I'm looking at you," he replied defiantly. She hadn't noticed it when he spoke before, but even his voice was sexy as hell.As she gazed at his haughty expression, the fear returned. Not of him, but for him.  "Are you one of them?" she said. "One of who?" the man said, still smiling. "You're obviously not a backpacker or camper," Ariel said. "You don't find many people who dress like European fashionistas in the wilderness of the Midwest.""No, you don't," the man said hypnotically. Then again, if he was one of the lion-men who pursued her, he would have been butt-naked, like her."Look, it's been a rough few days," she said. "I'm not in the mood for games.""You seem in surprisingly good spirits to me," the man said. She smiled fleetingly. "Call it a defense mechanism. Listen, if you're not one of them, then you're putting yourself at risk. I'm not someone you want to know. I have to get myself as far away from civilization as I can. Those lions did… something… to me. I could change at a moment's notice. You could die.""Change?" he said. She heard the distant roar of a lion echo from the valley below. That triggered the beast, and the lioness in her clawed to get out. Clawed clawed clawed.
"I—" she said. But the words came out a growl. "Run," she managed to finish.
