Key Themes in The Waiting Gate by J Merrill Forrest

Key Themes in ‘The Waiting Gate’
The number one theme in ‘The Waiting Gate’ is the question where do they go?, applied not only to those who have passed away, but to people who are so deeply affected by dementia that they seem completely absent from our world. The one thing we are all desperate to know when watching someone we love slip away from us, either from illness or old age, is that there is happiness at the end of the journey.

I first asked the question when I was working as a volunteer for a local hospice. I was visiting an elderly lady in her home, sitting and chatting with her for a couple of hours each week. She had terminal cancer, but she wasn’t in pain and was a lively companion for the first few months, delighting in singing songs and telling me all about her life. But something changed. I will never know, but either the cancer had reached her brain, or she had some form of dementia, and in mid-conversation she would suddenly ask who I was and if she owed me money. Within a very short time she had stopped speaking and was totally bedridden. I sat in her room just reading to her and I wondered, where had she gone? Why was a cancer-riddled body still living while her spirit was no longer there?

I read extensively and interviewed many people who had direct experience of caring for someone with dementia, including a lovely lady who had watched with dismay the deterioration of her husband of more than 60 years. The time came when he no longer recognised her or his family and they had to put him into a care home. When I told her of my belief about what was happening to her husband’s spirit she took my hand and said it brought her great comfort.

For dementia care and medical protocols I consulted a specialist dementia care nurse. She was invaluable in imparting advice and facts, and she read the manuscript as it was being written. She told me that it had had a positive effect on the way she viewed her job and her patients, yet another affirmation that what I was writing could have a real impact.

I hope, through the age-old medium of story-telling, to explain that we don’t just disappear into nothingness. I hope my stories bring comfort to many, because departing this life is the one thing we will all experience eventually.

Teaser:
“Where do you think they go, the patients who no longer seem to be aware of themselves or their surroundings? I mean, take Simon. One moment he’s angry and shouting, the next it’s as if he’s simply left his body behind and gone somewhere. Some of the patients are like that all the time, never having lucid moments at all, and I’ve always wondered … where do they go?”

About the Author:
J Merrill Forrest’s deep interest in the supernatural is a major theme in her writing. For more than thirty years Jane has researched her subject, visiting psychics, mediums, Spiritualist churches and séances, always keeping an open and questioning mind, hunting down evidence.
At age 40, J Merrill Forrest followed her dream of going to university and gained a BA (Hons) in English Literature, and returned to academia ten years later to gain her MA in Creative Writing. It was during this time she began to work on her novel ‘Flight of the Kingfisher’, published in 2015, which deals with the emotive and polarising subject of life after death and introduced psychic medium Alex Kelburn. He returns in her latest novel, ‘The Waiting Gate’, the main theme of which is dementia and what happens to those who ‘disappear’ as the disease takes hold.
J Merrill Forrest is also the author of 'Orders from Above' published in 2013.

Interview - Release Day Blitz Haunting Magic by Neely Powell

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Neely Powell is the pseudonym for co-writers Leigh Neely and Jan Hamilton Powell. Long-time friends, they’re the authors of “The Witches of New Mourne” a paranormal series about a family coven, a centuries’ old curse and an enchanted town.
AWAKENING MAGIC is available from The Wild Rose Press, and now HAUNTING MAGIC continues the story.
Their first paranormal novel, TRUE NATURE, is also available from The Wild Rose Press.
Writing as Celeste Hamilton, Jan published 24 bestselling romance novels for Silhouette and Avon Books. Her day job is in corporate communications in Tennessee. Leigh has a long resume as an editor and freelance writer, and is managing editor of a regional magazine group in Florida.
Both of us love reading about the paranormal and have had a couple of experiences. We tried writing together years ago, but nothing clicked until we launched into the paranormal. It just works for us.
What inspired you to write this book?
We started with a small town filled with secrets and lies and a coven of witches sworn to protect it but cursed by a vengeful spirit. When we started filling in the background, we discovered the magical Mourne mountains in Ireland. We knew our witches originated there, and so the story grew.
Please tell us about your latest release.
HAUNTING MAGIC continues the story started in AWAKENING MAGIC. The Connelly family coven is cursed by the mysterious Woman in White, a malevolent being who has taken a young witch from every generation for hundreds of years. In return, the magical town of New Mourne, Georgia, is allowed to continue as a haven for supernaturals. The witches who are now the likely sacrifices have sworn to break the curse. Fiona is their youngest. In addition to her magical abilities, she sees dead people and hosts a popular ghosthunting webcast. It’s spotted by a reality show producer, Bailey Powers, who is skeptical of all mediums. He was burned by a few fakes during a painful period in his past. But he falls for Fiona and has to accept what he never believed could be true – magic does exist. Soon he’s caught up in her family’s supernatural battle with forces of evil. He must stand by her side when she faces death. Will this generation fall to the Woman in White? Or does the curse end here?
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
We try to match them with attributes of the character. Fiona, the heroine of HAUNTING MAGIC, means white and fair. Fiona is a both a witch and a medium, a good girl who has spent most of her life trying to make everyone else happy.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Bailey Powers, the hero of HAUNTING MAGIC, was difficult. He’s human, a skeptic when it comes to the paranormal. He’s also carrying a lot of baggage. He doesn’t know what to make of our magical town, our coven or the various other creatures he meets. His not having magical abilities forced us to work harder to find what made him special to Fiona.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Willow, the leader of the fae, has so many facets to her personality. She’s sometimes a gracious old Southern woman. At other times, she bares her sharp, pointy teeth and scares the holy you-know-what out of people. And then she’s a beautiful, ageless faerie queen. She is so much fun to write.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
We always start with a character sketch, but sometimes characters take you in a different direction. We’re not afraid to follow them. Bailey changed a lot from our initial concept.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
This scene follows the mysterious death of a herd of cattle on a dairy farm. The dead cows are lying in a field when a flock of birds fall out of the sky, forcing our characters to take shelter and watch the bloody feast. “What in the hell kind of birds are those?” Bailey asked. “Vultures,” Fiona murmured. “But I’ve never seen them act this way.”Ryan stepped to her side. “Not long ago a flock picked a woman’s body clean in less than an hour. They’re attracted by the freshly dead cattle.”“This isn’t normal,” one of the other neighbors said. “I’ve lived here my whole life and never saw so many vultures at once.” “It’s like Thanksgiving at my Nana’s house,” Ryan said. “They eat a while, and then they fight a while.” He lifted his camera and headed back to the door. “I have to record this.”Despite cries of warning, Bailey and Fiona went out onto the back porch behind Ryan. The three of them stopped short of stepping into the yard. Near the closest dead cow, just beyond the open gate, black birds sat in a tight circle with their wings hunched against their bodies as they tore into the fresh meat. A couple of birds broke away, tussled, and then returned to the meal. The scene repeated across the field. After nearly thirty minutes, all the vultures rose as if ordered by a commander. They climbed to the sky and flew away.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
There was a second Ice Age in Ireland that devastated the country long before the potato famine. We used this as the reason why our coven of witches emigrated from Ireland to America.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
One thing we love is creating the abnormal to function in the normal world. In New Mourne, Georgia, humans live in harmony with shifters, witches, weres, fae, trolls and Druids – to name just a few. We’ve created a diverse cast of characters,  including a Southern Baptist minister and a doctor who is the grandson of a shaman. But to be honest, we’re not sure this is any different than the real world of secrets and lies. Real monsters live in plain sight most of the time. With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
There’s definitely a story arc involving the curse on the coven, but we’ve taken care to explain the details so that someone could read each book and follow the story. What we hope, of course, is that no one can read just one book.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Powell – all the time Neely – not often. Somehow, I find a way to keep Powell going. She suffers a lot.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
Both of us started writing stories in grammar school. It’s what we’ve always been.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Chocolate, Diet Coke. Chocolate.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
Powell – college football (Tennessee Volunteers). Neely – my grandchildren.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Neely – The Raven Cycle by Maggie StiefvaterPowell – Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
No, both of us read anywhere we can.
What can readers expect next from you?
Big things, we hope. We’re finishing the third book of this series and thinking about the fourth. It will feature a dragon. Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Overgrown weeds covered the back of cemetery. In the deepening gloom, Fiona stumbled over a stump. The baby’s screams filled her head. She had to help this child. The grave markers in the back of the cemetery were the oldest ones. Some of them were so weathered it was impossible to read the names and dates on them. When they reached the back corner, Fiona knelt. All she could hear was the baby’s cry.She dug through the weeds and scruff in front of her, ignoring the sting of thorns on her hands. Bailey dug with her, and soon she touched the cool stone of a broken grave marker. “Baby MacCuindliss” was carved in uneven letters deep in the stone.“This is the Woman in White’s baby.” Fiona traced the name on the marker with tender fingers. “Please don’t cry,” she whispered. “I’ll try to find your mother, I promise.”The baby’s cry faded to a whimper. The mist blew away, leaving Fiona and Bailey under a canopy of threatening clouds. “MacCuindliss,” Fiona breathed. “The Woman’s name.”Lightning streaked over the mountains, and the ominous stink of sulfur infused the air.

Magic and mayhem bring a witch and a Hollywood producer together…will an ancient curse tear them apart?
Book Description:
Fiona Burns, a witch who sees dead people, meets Hollywood producer Bailey Powers, who sees her as the next cable star—and a fake. Even so, she’s tempted by the dynamic producer in more ways than one. But she has a big distraction—a vicious curse on her family coven.
The ghosts of New Mourne warn of the return of the Woman in White, a vengeful spirit who claims the life of a Connelly witch from every generation. During the battle, Fiona unwittingly fuels the demonic forces, and black magic brings death and heartbreak to her family.
Initially a skeptic, Bailey is soon caught up in her supernatural battle with forces of evil. He’s also beginning to think Fiona can help him escape his haunting past. With magic and mayhem at war and survival on the line, the Witches of New Mourne face a new challenge from their ancient foe. They discover that not all dark deeds are borne of the Woman but a demon who is bent on gaining the Woman’s powers for his own. Will another generation fall? Or does the curse end here?

Why I Make Lists for EVERYTHING- Lovesick Gods by Amanda Meuwissen

I am a multi-tasker. I like to keep busy, and I tend to do about five things at once. That doesn’t automatically lend itself to being more organized. I fight to keep myself from going insane while maintaining this momentum. When it comes to getting daily tasks done so I have more free time to write, making lists is paramount.

And I don’t only mean making a grocery list before your weekly shopping excursion. I have to-do lists for my day-job as well, the basic tasks I need to complete spelled, usually on top of one-off requests that come in, and I move tasks to later in the week as needed.

I also tend to make lists for my non-work life, just so I don’t forget all the things I want to accomplish, especially if there’s something important coming up. Someone’s birthday, something I need to send in the mail, a deadline I can’t miss, the premiere of my favorite TV show—everything.

I even make lists while writing, and especially when preparing for a book launch.

When writing a new story, I might make lists beneath a character’s name of important traits, like backstory, personal connections, physical description. I might list out the desired chapters and then start jotting down the scenes that should occur in each one.

This might change over time as I flush those chapters out, and certain scenes will move to later chapters as well, or get cut altogether, but I find that making lists while brainstorming helps me avoid forgetting important plot points as I move forward in the writing process.

With a new book launch, I always start with what I did for my last book. If you’re a new author, you’ll be starting from scratch, but I like to have a single document I can reference with the book title, synopsis, tagline, word count, page count, possible excerpts, my most updated bio, etc. Then I make lists under topics like social media sites to post on, blogs I want to contact about helping promote my book or even review it, online blog tour sites I’ve used and found successful and what package I might want to try.

The document usually expands to include physical events for book signings, conventions, publications to contact, and more, and since I tend to write in the same genre, starting from what I used with a previous launch is a great kickoff for a new one. I try to keep notes on what worked or didn’t to inform on what I might try differently the next time.

For example, if I had a great review from a blog who doesn’t happen to be on a blog tour I schedule for a new launch, I make a point to follow up with that blog individually to gauge their interest.

There is so much that goes into writing a book, but promoting it is just as time-consuming. Making lists HELPS. It helps in every aspect of my life. So, if you’re looking for one bit of advice as you move ahead on your next project, start there and see where it takes you.

(me too, Amanda, I would never be able to get everything done or stay on track without my lists ~RR)

Number of pages: 312Word Count: 106,903
Cover Artist: Veronika Dolnikova
Tagline: Heroes aren’t meant to act like their villains—or fall in love with them.
Book Description:
The elements touch everyone on Earth—Fire, Water, even Light—but every so often someone becomes more attuned to their elemental leaning and develops true power. When an evil Elemental known as Thanatos arrived in Olympus City, it saw the rise of its first hero—Zeus. But the death toll caused by defeating Thanatos changed Zeus, who by day is young detective Danny Grant.
It’s been six months since Thanatos terrorized the city at the start of Lovesick Gods. Danny should be used to his duty behind the mask, but the recent past haunts him. His girlfriend left him, he snaps at the barest provocation, his life feels empty—he needs an outlet, any outlet to pull him out of his depression.
Enter notorious thief Malcolm Cho, the Ice Elemental Prometheus. There was a time when Danny welcomed a fight with Cho, filled with colorful banter and casual flirtations that were a relief compared to Thanatos. Even as a criminal, Cho had recognized the threat Thanatos posed and promised to help Danny stop him, but the day Danny needed Cho, he never showed. Cho was the reason so many people died that day—including Danny’s mother.
Danny decides to teach the man a lesson and fan the fire of their attraction into something more. At worst, he’ll get some no-strings-attached sex out of the deal and finally blow off steam; at best, he’ll get Cho to fall in love with him and then break his heart to spite him. Danny doesn’t expect to fall for Cho in the process, and he certainly can’t predict the much darker threat on the horizon.

Amazon
Excerpt:
The long game, Danny thought as he accepted the hand Cho held out to help him from the sofa. Cho couldn’t have any fun with a blubbering mess, so of course he’d want to cheer Danny up. It didn’t mean anything. It just felt nice that Cho didn’t pry the way the others did. He’d never look down on Danny. He was a liar, a criminal, a scoundrel—he was the reason Danny had been forced into that position with Thanatos to begin with—but while the rest of his life felt like an open wound, somehow Cho was a balm.Danny made a show of changing out of Cho’s clothes and into his Zeus costume right there in the living room. Leaving the sleep pants and T-shirt folded on the sofa, he started to put on his boots at the door. “Interesting choice of work clothes.” Cho crossed his arms with an amused eyebrow raise.“I’ll change when I get to the precinct. And next time I’ll call. Or text. Promise. Thanks for breakfast.” Danny made to walk toward Cho off the rug, then gave an abortive gesture like oops, stuck now with my boots on. Cho rolled his eyes, but he still moved closer to accept the kiss Danny pulled him into. And let linger. And linger... Maybe a little longer than necessary. “Have a nice day at work, dear,” Cho said, sickly sweet in his familiar drawl. Danny found himself smiling—and meaning it. Cho was a bad man. He was. He…he was. But he made things lighter. And easier. And even though Danny knew that soon he’d have to end this or risk getting in too deep, for now he could enjoy the lie for just a little longer.

Enough Blood for Your Vampire Party? You Do the Math Guest Blog by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison

When writing horror, you sometimes have to know…what’s the best way to put this? Odd things. You might need to know the effects produced by a lightning strike to the human head. You might need to know exactly how long it takes a person to suffocate in a pile of cat litter. Or you might need to know the volume of blood in a given kind of animal so that you could, for example, figure out what to bring to a vampire party.
With some creatures, you can easily look up how much blood they contain. The amount of blood in an average human is pretty well documented. A healthy, 5’10” adult male is going to have between 1.32 and 1.5 gallons of blood. That’s actually a lot of liquid to try to drink in a single sitting. When was the last time that you drank a whole gallon of anything at once? And yet, vampires are routinely portrayed sucking people completely dry of blood. Now, I get that vampires don’t eat solid food, so they need to compensate by drinking their entire diet, but imagine drinking 1.32 gallons of blood. That’s 11.682 pounds. Have you ever eaten more than eleven pounds of food in one sitting? Even figuring for a supernaturally dark appetite, that’s a lot to eat in one go. Most people only eat between 3 and 5 pounds per day. So, if a vampire is drinking a whole human, it’s probably only eating every two or three days.
For those of you concerned with feeding a large group of vampires, either in real life or in fiction, here’s the simple rule of thumb my research has uncovered: the average blood volume of a healthy animal is 7-9% of that animal’s total body weight. So, if you want to figure out how many gallons of blood there are in a creature, simply take its total body weight, multiply it by .08 and then divide the resulting number by 8.85. Why 8.85? Because a gallon of blood weighs 8.85 pounds, so that’s an easy way to convert the blood weight into gallons.
And just in case you are super busy or your vampire party is tonight, here’s a quick reference list:
African Elephant: 65 gallons of bloodGiraffe: 23.5 gallons of bloodLarge Bull: 21.69 gallons of bloodDraft Horse: 14.8 gallons of bloodStandard Horse: 12 gallons of bloodHolstein Cow: 11.5 gallons of bloodLlama: 4 gallons of bloodSilverback Gorilla: 3.61 gallons of bloodHuman: 1.32 gallons of bloodLabrador retriever: Just over half a gallon of bloodCat: 8.5 ounces of bloodRabbit: 4.3 ounces of bloodMouse: 0.05 ounces of blood

So, if you are throwing a medium sized vampire party, say 15-20 vampires, I’d suggest you bring a giraffe. Not only will it provide enough blood, it has a long enough neck that they can all sit down to eat at the same time.

Publisher: Fiery Seas Publishing
Release Date: October 3, 2017
Genre: YA Horror/Comedy
Book Description:
It’s the night before the SAT test. The forces of darkness are stirring.
Twin brothers, Bing and Ron Slaughter, know they’ve got to cram like their lives depend on it because their college plans sure do. If they don’t ace the test, they’ll be doomed to spend the rest of their days flipping burgers at the McDonald’s their parents run. That’s why they hatch a plan to meet up with the members of their punk band, the Ephits, spend the night studying at a secluded cabin in the woods, and maybe squeeze in a little jamming. What could go wrong with a brilliant plan like that?
Ancient evil. That’s what.
As a cataclysmic lightning storm rolls in, Bing, Ron and the rest of the Ephits find themselves tangled in a sinister plot to summon a demon. Yes, demons are real. To survive the night, the band must find a malevolent artifact, battle bloodthirsty monsters and stand against the most dangerous and powerful foe humanity has ever faced…the Golfer’s Association.

Teaser:
“Wait, wait, wait,” Ron interrupted. “The Golfers Association? Don’t you mean insane cultists or Satan worshipers or evil wizards or something?”“Insane cultists, Satan worshipers and evil wizards are like elderly nuns compared to the Golfers’ Association,” their prisoner responded. “You’d be much better off if it were something that simple. These guys are demon freaks.”
“Demon freaks,” Bing repeated in a whisper. “That sounds…bad.”
“Oh, it’s bad alright,” the prisoner shuddered. “You have no idea.”
About the Author:
Fish Wielder is J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison's first novel novel (He wrote a graphic novel, The Helm, for Dark Horse Comics). Jim has worked as a writer, screen writer, animator and film director. He started his professional career by producing a low-budget direct-to-video feature film, The Creature From Lake Michigan. Making a bad movie can be a crash course in the essential elements of good character and story, and The Creature From Lake Michigan was a tremendously bad movie. Shifting his focus entirely to animation, Jim joined Will Vinton Studios where he directed animated commercials for M&M’s and on the stop-motion TV series Gary and Mike. While working at Vinton, he also co-wrote the television special Popeye's Voyage: The Quest for Pappy with actor Paul Reiser.
Jim has appeared on NBC's The Apprentice as an expert advisor on brand characters, developed characters and wrote the pilot episode for the PBS children's television series SeeMore's Playhouse and authored the previously mentioned graphic novel, The Helm, named one of 2010's top ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens by YALSA, a branch of the American Library Association. These days, Jim is the creative director and co-owner of Character LLC, a company that does story-analysis for brands and entertainment properties. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his lovely wife, two amazing kids, one smart dog and one stupid dog.
