Free Social Media Tips for Authors...Plus Advice from Anne R. Allen

I mention the word free in the title because I've heard there are companies who guarantee increased sales results if you pay them to show you how to work with social media in order to market and promote books. Or, some claim they can do it for you. From what I've heard, they promise to make you the next bestseller...for a fee of course.

The only thing I can say about that is that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. And, if these things actually worked wouldn't everyone b...

How to Write About Sex...

When I see things that get into how to write about sex, I often sit back and smile sometimes. Writing about sex can be subjective, and I've never found a set definition...or road map...when it comes to writing about it. But the articles I'm linking to now aren't all that bad.

Before I get into these articles, I'd like to warn anyone out there who is thinking about writing sexy, smutty erotic romance books. Whether you do them with a tongue-in-cheek style with parodies, or you do the...

Cover Preview: The Wall Street Shark

This is book two in the Bad Boy Billionaire series, "The Wall Street Shark." All the books are stand alones and none have to be read in order. In this particular book, I touched on a few more serious topics like alcoholism and sex addiction. I didn't get too heavy. The story revolves around a young gay man with a teenage son who has been through all the worst parts of alcoholism and we find him at a place where he's ready to move forward with his life. Which is why he's still separated f...

Connecticut Poet Laureate Speaks About Newtown

In times of great tragedy we often turn to the written word, and in this case it's poetry. As a writer it's my weak spot. As a reader it's something I cherish.

Dick Allen, Connecticut's poet laureate, said he awoke three days after Newtown's mass-murder tragedy with this phrase running through his head: "The entire nation has tears in its eyes."

It's not just the nation, I think it's the entire world. I've seen poems written by people in the UK, and as far away as Africa. My sister-in-law told...

Kindle Direct Publishing Newsletter: Holiday Bonus; NaNoWriMo; Marketing Tip

I post these things from the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Newsletter for those of you who might be interested in indie publishing with KDP and don't know that much about it. And while it might not give you all the details and answer all your questions, at least it shows you what KDP is doing, how it's being presented, and the kind of information authors who have pubbed with KDP are getting.

This isn't everything from the newsletter (I'm not blogging about this to promote other KDP...

LGBT Book Review: Deeply Superficial by Michael Menzies

When I first started reading Deeply Superficial by Michael Menzies, I wasn't sure where it was going. From the image on the book cover I expected biographical stories about Marlene Dietrich and Noel Coward. I soon found out the book is more of a combination autobiography/biography, with personal accounts of the fascinating life Michael Menzies has led...mixed in with tidbits about both Dietrich and Coward. Weaving different stories into a book is not an easy thing to do, but it...

Gay Christmas "Stuff"

If you're like me, you have trouble figuring out what to buy people for the holidays and you're not sure where to shop for interesting things you know people don't have. So I found a few web sites I liked visiting this season, where you can find all things LGBT...or things LGBT people would like to find.

Gay Pride Christmas

Here’s this years Christmas Catalog. Some items are currently in short supply, but we expect to have full quantities well before the holidays. We’re adding many...

Chase of a Lifetime Free on Allromanceebooks.com 12 Days of Christmas

"Chase of a Lifetime" was chosen to be part of a FREE book event at allromanceebooks.com this weekend, called the 12 Days of Christmas. It's the first, and by no means last, book I published last spring with Ryan Field Press. It's also the first book in the "Chase" series, followed by "Chase of a Dream," and "Chase of an Adventure." Each book is a stand alone, and there are no cliffhangers.

From my inbox:

Your book will be the 4th free read and available for download to readers on Decembe...

That Sad Day in Newtown, Connecticut

There's not much worse in life that I can think of than the senseless murders of innocent, helpless children who never meant to harm anyone.

Who went to school one morning, probably thinking about Santa Claus this time of year, never knowing they wouldn't return home ever again.

Or how their moms and dads, grandparents and families are dealing with this.

I can't even imagine the magnitude of experiencing something like that.

And I know there's nothing I could say that would help...
