7 Books to Read this Summer

Summer is the perfect time to catch up on all the books that have been collecting on your nightstand. And if you made “read more books” a goal for 2019, it’s another chance to make reading a habit (see book #3 for some more advice on that!). Here are 7 books on my summer reading list. What are you reading? Let me know on Twitter @MollyFletcher.

1. Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport

Cal Newport makes the case for deep work or “the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task.” In today’s world of e-mail and social media, most people have lost the ability to go deep. Cal suggests three things:

Embrace boredom
Quit social media
Drain the shallows of your life

Easier said than done, but when you allow for “deep work” in your life, you can unleash your true potential. If you need help finding focus in a distracted world, this is a must read.  Bonus: His follow up book, Digital Minimalism, is also a must read!

2. Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialist World by David Epstein

David Epstein, author of the New York Times bestseller The Sports Geneis back with a new book. In Rangehe emphasizes that early specialization is the exception, not the rule for high achievers. Digging into massive amounts of scientific research, David argues that going broad—not narrow—is the best route to success. It’s a book that will have you thinking differently about your career, your hobbies, and even your parenting. Bonus: stay tuned for my conversation with David on Game Changers with Molly Fletcher.

3. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear

Having trouble breaking a bad habit? Or sticking to a good habit? Packed with data and actionable advice, James Clear shares a simple framework to help you transform your habits. We know that our habits directly contribute to our outcomes. Now here’s a guide to help you turn those small changes into big outcomes.

4. Everybody Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People by Bob Goff

After practicing law for 25 years, author Bob Goff gave up his law firm to focus on writing, speaking, and his humanitarian work. He’s the Honorary Counsel to Uganda and the founder of Love Does, a nonprofit organization that works to provide educational opportunities in post conflict zones throughout the world. In this book, he writes about what it means to love without limits, live without fear, and dream big. You can also listen to hear Bob talk about the book in my interview with him for our Game Changers podcast here.

5. Sapiens: A brief history of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

Also on the reading lists of some well-known names (Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg, to name a few), this book from Oxford-educated historian Yuval Noah Harari is a history of humankind. It challenges everything we thought about being human and argues that homo sapiens prevailed because of happenstance, not the sum or great leaders or wars or germs. Harari writes about the three revolutions- Cognitive, Agricultural and Scientific- and that we might be undergoing a fourth, which could significantly change the laws that have governed life the past four billion years. Now that humans have the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves, where will that lead us? He notes that humankind’s greatest is question is “not ‘What do we want to become?’ but ‘What do we want to want?’

6. Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World by General Stanley McChrystal

To defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq, US Army General (Ret.) Stanley McChrystal had to discard more than a hundred years of management wisdom and shift from a traditional hierarchy with silos and slow communication to a system of transparency and adaptability. In his book Team of Teams, he shares how the best teams operate with this “team of teams” approach to become more agile, adaptive and cohesive. It’s a fascinating read for anyone in leadership navigating change in today’s complex world.

7. Turn Enemies Into Allies: The Art of Peace in the Workplace by Judy Ringer

Did you know that the typical American employee wastes close to three hours weekly dealing with workplace conflicts? These conflicts harm morale, energy and productivity. Judy Ringer offers a practical and step-by-step system to create workplace peace based on the Japanese martial art Aikido. One of the key tenets of her system is stepping outside your own point of view to appreciate the other person’s perspective. In our Game Changer Negotiation Training, we teach something very similar called 360° Awareness- the four perspectives that shape how people view the world around them and filter information. When you use this approach, you understand what the other person values so you can connect. The system Ringer puts forth in her book can help with conflict and communication skill-building in any workplace environment… so that you can get back to the work that matters.

Happy reading!

Daniel Pink on The Importance of Breaks

Daniel Pink- WHENNew York Times bestselling author Daniel Pink joined me on my podcast last year, and we had an awesome conversation. He shared the research and surprising takeaways from his book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing.  One of the things I found most interesting is what he discovered about the importance of breaks in our day. Check out this clip to hear why taking a break actually improves your productivity.

Do You Have the Right People On Your Bus?

Ron ClarkIn his book Move Your Bus, educator Ron Clark of The Ron Clark Academy illustrates why your people are the key to unlocking success. Imagine your organization as a bus filled with people who either help or hinder your team’s ability to move it forward:

Drivers (who steer the organization)
Runners (who consistently go above and beyond)
Joggers (who do their jobs without pushing themselves)
Walkers (who are just getting pulled along)
Riders (who hinder success and drag the team down)

In the below three-minute clip, Ron explains why you should invest your energy in your runners. Click here to listen to the full episode.

3 Lessons from College Basketball Championship Coaches

When March Madness rolls around, the characteristics of championship teams are on display. I’m grateful to have interviewed some incredible coaches on my podcast, Game Changers with Molly Fletcher, including these three college basketball championship coaches. Here are three lessons I’ve learned from my conversations with University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, Michigan State University men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, and University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley.

If you’re not a little bit selfish, you’ll never be great.– Geno Auriemma

High performers want more for themselves than most people. Geno Auriemma doesn’t shy away from this. He tells his players you need to be selfish, BUT that selfishness has to come within the context of the team. That means wanting to win every game and wanting to dominate as a team. Geno coaches his stars to shine within the context of the team. Otherwise, he says, you’re just a good player on a bad team and no one will know whether you can be a good player on a good team. Why does that matter? Because at the next level- whether in sports or in business- people want to know if you can function on a winning team, where everyone else is as good as you. Not everyone can.

Listen to the full episode: Geno Auriemma on Winning (And Winning Some More)

A player-coached team is better than a coach-coached team. – Tom Izzo

Tom Izzo says that his best teams have been the ones that are player-coached. Have you ever been part of a team where everything is top-down leadership? Where motivation comes in the form of extrinsic incentives instead of intrinsic desires? Where accountability is something to be enforced from above? Chances are, that team didn’t get very far. The championship teams are the ones that hold each other accountable, that aren’t afraid to give each other feedback, and that are motivated to do great things together. If the coach is driving the bus and the players are just along for the ride, the team is likely headed for an early exit.

Listen to the full episode:  Tom Izzo on Maximizing Your Team’s Potential

Challenges are opportunities in disguise. – Dawn Staley

Dawn Staley built a national championship program at the University of South Carolina from scratch. What appealed to her about the job? The challenge. Dawn views challenges as tests that you have to take personally and professionally in order to better yourself. Part of what she relished about taking the job was the opportunity to compete against legendary coaches in the conference like Pat Summitt at Tennessee. When you re-frame a challenge as an opportunity, you never know what you can accomplish. At South Carolina, Dawn has won a national championship, led the country in attendance, and coached the #1 draft pick in the WNBA.

The Happiness Heartbeat Exercise

Jenn Lim is the CEO and Chief Happiness Officer of Delivering Happiness, a company that she and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh co-created to inspire passion and purpose in workplaces for a happier world.

In this clip from our conversation when she was a guest on my podcast, she talks through The Happiness Heartbeat Exercise. How does it work? Similar to heartbeats on a monitor, she recommends plotting out the highs and lows in your life and asking a few simple questions about those moments, to help you identify what really matters most. Questions like:

What values were there or not there?
Which people were there or not there?

The answers to these questions lead to finding sustainable happiness and a sense of purpose. The best part is, this exercise works for companies, too. By tracking what was happening during periods of low retention or terrible sales, you can find the answers to what was at the root of those problems so you can do things differently moving forward. After listening to the clip below, download the full podcast episode here.

“Mama Jan” Smith’s Advice on the Best Way to Deliver Tough Feedback

Jan Smith“Mama Jan” Smith is a Grammy-nominated producer and vocal coach to the stars—working with chart-topping artists like Usher, Justin Beiber, The Band Perry, Rob Thomas, Drake, Sugarland, Ciara, Collective Soul, and more. She joined me as a guest on my podcast last year, and we had a great conversation. Just like when I was an agent dealing with superstar athletes, she has to deal with some pretty big egos in the music industry, and delivering tough feedback can be, well, tough. In this clip, she discusses the two best ways to deliver tough feedback.

7 Kickass Women to Follow on Instagram

In celebration of Women’s History Month, I thought it would be fun to share some of the women who inspire me. I admit I first joined Instagram to keep up with my three teenage daughters, but one of my favorite things about the platform is discovering new people who are sharing their gifts with the world. And lately I’ve been following some kickass women who make me laugh, make me think, and sometimes give me a good kick in the pants when I need it.

You might enjoy following them, too. Here they are:

Sara Blakely @sarablakely — Not only is Sara Blakely the founder of Spanx and a self-made billionaire, she may just have the world’s best collection of coffee mugs. Follow her for her #MondayMugShots, a funny and inspiring take on #MondayMotivation starring her favorite mugs. Bonus: her Instagram Stories chronicle “working mom life” with hilariously relatable moments capturing the adventures of parenthood with four kids under age 9.
Brené Brown @brenebrown — Research professor and author Brené Brown challenges us to “walk through vulnerability to get to courage.” Her Instagram feed features great book recommendations, inspiring quotes, and powerful stories that make you pause and reflect. I love her sporadic ‘post it note’ reminders around her house that always send a well-timed message.
Reese Witherspoon @reesewitherspoon — Reese Witherspoon is a Hollywood star, entrepreneur, author and mom. She’s also the founder of Hello Sunshine, a media company which celebrates women and puts them at the center of the story. Her posts range from pithy to profound, and my favorite might be when she re-posts #dogsofinstagam, and here’s why. You’re welcome. Bonus: also follow her curated book clubwhere she announces a new book every month.
Jess Ekstrom @jess_ekstrom — Jess and I first connected as speakers at Leadercast. She’s the founder of Headbands of Hope and just started a new initiative, Mic Drop, to get more women as keynote speakers. Her “Notes from Jess” always get my attention and I love how openly she shares her journey as an entrepreneur, speaker, and soon-to-be author with the world.
Jen Hatmaker @jenhatmaker — Author and podcast host Jen Hatmaker gives us a real peek behind the curtain of her life with her posts– from funny text messages she receives, who her newest podcast guest is, inspirational memes, family photos and even pictures of her cooking. She’s a fun lady who’s fun to follow.
Cleo Wade @cleowade — Artist and poet Cleo Wade has been called “The Millennial Oprah” by New York Magazine and “Everyone’s B.F.F.” by the New York Times. But it’s her Instagram feed featuring her handwritten poetry that has captured the attention and hearts of more than 482K followers. Follow her for a little self-love, compassion and inspiration when you need it most.
Billie Jean King @billiejeanking — I had the incredible honor of interviewing tennis legend Billie Jean King at an event last year. She’s someone I looked up to as a young girl playing the sport so it was pretty surreal. At 75 years young, her Instagram is a fun mix of throwback photos, behind-the-scenes photos (with famous friends like Magic Johnson and Elton John) and shots from the tennis world. Most inspiring is seeing her continue to fight for equality and inclusion while motivating our next generation.

Who are your favorite follows on Instagram? Send me your suggestions, and here’s a shameless plug to follow me @mollywfletcher.

3 Leadership Lessons from Dabo Swinney

Dabo Swinney, Clemson FootballlIn the past three seasons, Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney has led the Tigers to two national championships (2016, 2018). Coach Swinney joined me for an episode of “Game Changers with Molly Fletcher” before the start of the 2018 season and it was one of my favorite conversations because of the leadership insights and stories he shared.

Note: You can listen to the full episode below (or subscribe to Game Changers with Molly Fletcher) on Apple podcasts or your favorite podcast app.

Here are my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

Serve their heart and not their talent. In other words, make sure you love the person and not just their abilities. When you simply serve their talent, you do everyone involved a disservice. Serve, love and care for the people you lead.
Bloom where you’re planted. This mindset embraces what it means to be present and grateful. Too often people get caught up in what’s next or climbing the career ladder… and they forget to be great where they are. Bloom where you’re planted is a reminder that sometimes your next step is right under your nose. And that we can all be great where we are, no matter what lies ahead.
Let failure develop you, not define you. Failure is an unwelcome visitor that we all have to deal with. But when we can see the gifts that failure gives us, we open ourselves to a deeper understanding of our values and resilience. By moving forward, we inspire others and build our fearlessness.
