What's that by your head?
I try to keep up my Photoshop chops by watching Lynda.com videos. Right now (in addition to trying to figure out how to use my iPhone via a SEVEN HOUR COURSE) I've started a course on restoring and colorizing old photos. The instructor was talking about painting out distracting elements. And in this example...

Everyone he showed it to said, "Why is there an IPAD next to Roosevelt's head???"
LOL!

Walkies!
The thunder was absolutely bombastic in the wee hours of the morning. I decided to have my walk somewhere the ground wasn't soggy, somewhere with a paved path.

Hm. Time for an alternate route.

Are You Busy?
Right now I'm ruminating on the phrase "Are you busy?"
I used to have a co-worker who approached me with that line whenever she needed something. And at my last day job, I was always busy. So busy that the person who replaced me couldn't do all the work, and they had to take away several of the duties and divide them among three other staff members! So really, the answer was, yes, I was busy. Always. However, I also valued this co-worker's projects and would want to either make time to do them myself, or find some suggestion to help her do them well without me. I developed the answer, "Tell me what you need," rather than a response to the actual question. But because I was delivering it in person, she could tell that I actually meant it, I did want to know what she needed to see if I could help. I wasn't being a jerk.
But when total strangers IM me with "Are you busy?" it frankly feels like entrapment.
When someone wants me to be involved in or contribute to or join something, what I want is a layout of what the project is and what I'd need to do. A proposal. Not a cryptic IM out of the blue that just says "Are you busy?"
I'm working on the fight-or-flight response this question is triggering in me. I'd also like a good, standard answer. Maybe one that I'll make a macro of and just drop in so I'm not emotionally engaged by the entrapment-feeling. The generous part of me feels like it's a way of saying, "I have something to ask you but I don't want to bother you with details unless I get the go-ahead from you." And if I'd feel bad to bite their heads off if that was where they were coming from. Maybe they don't realize it backfires, and giving me the facts briefly is a lot less disconcerting than lobbing a weird question as to my availability.
Are any of you cornered with this question regularly? How do you handle it?

The Voice of Vic - Interview with Gomez Pugh
Casting the voice of Vic was my biggest consideration when producing PsyCop in audio. Find out what Gomez Pugh saw the process in this JCP Saturday Snippet!
Also, Meatworks is now available in paperback. See what readers are saying and find the paperback.
What else is going on with me? Recovering from GenCon and gearing up for GRNW (with important info on paperback preorders for GRNW). Last day to order is Sept 2.

Important GRNW info
Although it's still August, it feels like summer is already fixing to draw to a close and September is hurtling toward me at an alarming rate. What's going on in September? I'll visit Seattle for the first time, that's what!
The Gay Romance Northwest Meet-Up has invited me to come and talk books with a bunch of fabulous GLBTQ romance writers, including Rick Reed, Ginn Hale, Andrea Speed, Belinda McBride and many more. What's GRNW all about?
...our main purpose is to not exist—to get to a point where finding these books and finding these authors is easy and you don’t need to think about it. It’s just there in libraries and book stores and at all book conventions. Like, you can throw a stone and you’ll hit an LGBTQ romance writer being celebrated publicly. (Maybe not a stone—maybe a soft, delicious cookie.) You get what I mean though. To be at a point where we’re not fighting for exposure and to get into places, which is what a lot of our work is tied to right now. To be part of the “given,” where when you ask, “Where’s the queer romance books?” and people say, “They’re over there, along with the rest of the romance books.” (That's just one of the parts that grabbed me. Definitely read the whole post.)
If you'd like to grab my autograph at the book signing, you can bring your own book, or pre-order a paperback from me, or buy one at the event. (I strongly suggest the pre-order. I only plan on bringing a few copies of PsyCop: Partners and Meatworks for my extras.) I'm also offering a special PsyCop bundle discount, a volume discount, and some inexpensive PsyCop T-shirts if you pre-order.
Note: since the books are print-on-demand, I'll need to cut off pre-orders September 2.
GRNW is happening September 20 at the Seattle Central Library. Are you within traveling distance? Why not join us? More info at the GRNW site.

Inspiration is weird
I'm having some random passing thoughts about my two-part process of inspiration. In an ideal world, I'd have an idea and think, "OMG, wanna DO that!" But sometimes the idea and the inspiration detach from each other.
So there's having an idea and having it lie there flaccid.
And there's the burning urge of "wanna DO...uh...something."
I'm having the second one this morning. Feels a lot more pleasant than the first. Maybe I can match it up with a thing.
