A Writer Dreams about Summer

How I want to Spend my Summer

1.  Sleeping on a beach
2.  Snorkeling in warm waters where tropical fish are plentiful3.  Reading for pleasure (thrillers and anything weird-odd-unusual-creative-provocative)4.  Sleeping on the patio in the sun (during the 1% of the summer when the sun shines here, meaning I won't get much sleep this way - but one can always dream)

5.  Tending to my plants and flowers6.  Listening to the birds7.  Listening to the rain8.  Gazing at beautiful paintings in art...

Lovecraft Walking Tour in Providence, RI

I was fortunate to be at Brown University in Providence for a couple of days last week and limped  around town to see some Lovecraftian sites.  My first stop was the John Hay Library (20 Prospect St), which houses a large collection of HPL's manuscripts.

I hoped to spend many hours in the library, luxuriating in the thrill of reading the stories in their original form. I've known for a long time that HPL wrote in "long hand" and loathed typing, so I was interested in seeing how he edited his...

Arkham House, the official publisher of H.P. Lovecraft, announced its 2010-2011 list yesterday. For horror and weird fiction fans everywhere, this is huge news.

This post outlines the list and supplies a few details about my upcoming Arkham House book, which will be published in 2011. I'll post more about all of the reprint and new Arkham House books as they're released.

Project X: new novel update

The contract has now been signed by all parties. The book will be published in 2011. We have a title. Dare I say more?
This particular book (ye ol' Project X) will be the high point of my so-called career as a writer. It's not much by most people's standards, but for me, it's so cool that my head is spinning.
I can't wait to start working on Project X. But I have 4 other books in the queue, and all must be written first.
Now, this isn't to say that all of the other...

More Books!

Oh, happy day! I received a box of books today from Amazon.
In my early-mid twenties, I read everything of interest in the public library -- both fiction and non-fiction: everything from 12-15 magazines/week to history to exotic plant life to biographies to science to Shakespeare (and the associated study guides) to mysteries to literary novels to poetry to YA novels, etc. It was almost impossible to get certain types of books (literary fiction and poetry, eg) at the...

Slug Guys in Paradise

When life becomes cluttered with "things to do," it's nice to know we have perfect Sundays waiting for us.
It's another gorgeous day here! Blue sky, warm breeze, everything in bloom.
We now have 2 baby groundhogs (otherwise known as "slug guys with legs") in the back yard. The gigantic slug guy apparently passed away during the winter, and we miss him.
I'm hoping to get some photos of the baby slug guys this year.
From one to two!

Advice for New Writers - Book Reviews

Being new to blogging and social networks, I've been surprised to see a lot of posts from new writers who are upset about negative book reviews.
Strong advice to new writers: CHILL OUT. It's extremely bad form for an author to retaliate or even defend herself against mean-spirited anonymous comments.
Let it go. Seriously. If you freak over every review you get over the coming years, you'll have a heart attack.
As for good reviews, we all love...
