God’s Not Dead 2 (Movie Review)
When I first heard that there would be a GOD’S NOT DEAD 2, I was elated.
I absolutely loved the first movie and couldn’t wait to see the sequel.
Though the movie released on April 1st, our recent relocation kept me from seeing the movie until now. In celebration of finishing the rough draft of the seventh Miller’s Creek novel, STILL I WILL FOLLOW, my dear hubby took me to see the movie followed by dinner out.
Following is my review of the film.

GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 – About the Movie
From the college classroom of GOD’S NOT DEAD to the public square in GOD’S NOT DEAD 2, the name of Jesus is welcomed less and less with each passing day. If Christians don’t take a stand today, will we even have a choice tomorrow?
Welcome back to Hope Springs … home not only of Hadleigh University, but also Martin Luther King Jr. High School, where beloved teacher Grace Wesley helps students understand and enjoy history. Her love of teaching, her love for her students, and her love of life all come from the same place: her love of Christ.
So when Brooke, a hurting student grieving the loss of her brother, reaches out to Grace, their coffee-shop conversation naturally leads to Grace sharing the hope she finds in Christ.
When Brooke later asks an honest question about Jesus in the classroom, Grace’s reasoned response lands her in big trouble—almost before she even finishes giving her answer.
With the principal and superintendent joining forces with a zealous civil liberties group, Grace faces an epic court case that could cost her the career she loves and expel God from the classroom—and the public square—once and for all!
GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 – My Review
The current climate of division and unrest we see in our country and world underscores the increasing persecution of Christians worldwide. Comparatively speaking, in America we have been somewhat protected from the persecution that our brothers and sisters around the world face.
But as tension and evil escalates, more and more we begin to experience the spiritual forces of evil line up in force against believers. GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 uses recent headlines to bring us a fictional account of how this very scenario could play out in a high school classroom.
I think the following movie clip does a great job of explaining the potential trouble brewing and gives a brief synopsis of the underlying theme of the movie at the same time.
What I Liked: I appreciate this movie for addressing the decreasing religious liberties American Christians are experiencing. While the buzz-word “tolerance” is bandied about by the world, seemingly everything and everyone is tolerated except for Christians and their ability to speak the name of Jesus freely without fear of repercussion.
GOD’S NOT DEAD 2 clearly addresses this fact.
Several unexpected surprises were a plus for me in this film. Cameos and appearances by Mike Huckabee, Sadie Robertson, and Lee Strobel were well-done and delightful. (Many of you may remember my reviews of apologetics books by Lee Strobel during the preparation for writing CROSSROADS and its companion Bible study, BELIEVE & KNOW. In my opinion, all believers should read Mr. Strobel’s books and others like them to be prepared to give an answer to those who have questions and arguments against our belief in Jesus as God’s Son.)
The overall acting in the film was also well-done. Giving especially noteworthy performances were Melissa Joan Hart, Jesse Metcalfe, Pat Boone, David A. R. White, Hayley Orrantia, and Ernie Hudson.
I also liked that some of the same characters from the first film showed up in this film. In my humble opinion as a storyteller, I feel like this gives viewers the ability to “hang their hat” in an already familiar place. Characters who had a repeat appearance in the second installment include: Rev. Dave (David A. R. White), Rev. Jude (Benjamin Onyango), Amy Ryan (Trisha LaFache), and Martin Yip (Paul Kwo).
Also making an appearance as themselves are the Newsboys. Here’s a video of their fantastic song “Guilty,” which is used in the movie and follows the story’s theme.
One of my favorite things about both movies is the way the lives of several characters are intertwined and brought together. To me, this is very true-to-life in how our heavenly Father orchestrates events and uses His people to effect change in the world in which we live.
What I Didn’t Like: I hesitate to even list the picky things I came up with for this part of the review. My reason? I don’t want little picky things to keep folks from going to see this movie. The message is too important for us to miss and is loaded with encouragement to live out a life of standing up for our beliefs in a loving way.
While highly subjective, good reviews list the positives and negatives of a particular book or movie and are important for credibility’s sake. In addition, I want to present as accurate a view as possible for my blog readers.
There were a few places where I felt like the movie as a whole wasn’t up to the high standards set by the first film. I realize that smaller budgets require adjustments, but this one just didn’t feel as well-made. Some of the scenes felt “forced” for lack of a better term.
While I liked the returning characters, I did feel like a few of the scenes involving them were a rehashing of a scene from the first movie. In my opinion, that weakened the movie in general.
Review Wrap-Up: Overall, I truly enjoyed this story and found myself moved to tears on several occasions. I do recommend the movie for families and individuals. The subject matter is crucial and could spark important dialogue in families, churches, and communities. The film serves as a great reminder that as Christ’s followers we need to set an example of love and peace.
I do hope that the movie’s producers will consider future films set in other countries to give an accurate portrayal of how persecution affects our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world.
COMMENTS CHIT-CHAT: Have you seen the movie, GOD’S NOT DEAD 2? If so, what are your thoughts? If you haven’t seen it, what are your thoughts on the encroachment on the religious liberties of Christians?

8 Simple Tools For Raising Great Kids – My Review
As a mother, grandmother, former public school teacher and relief house parent for a children’s home, I love practical books such as 8 Simple Tools For Raising Great Kids. In fact, I truly believe that if more parents would take the time to read and apply the truths presented as a preventative and proactive measure in our society, we would have less need for remediation.
The simple tools presented in this book are on talking, listening, influencing, connecting, teaching, encouraging, correcting, and leading. Each section is further divided into five short passages, each with an application suggestion.
Not only are these daily readings effective in the area of parenting, but many are also great advice in any relationship.
I highly encourage anyone interested in helping children become great adults to read this book and enact its advice.

25 Ways to Maintain Brain Health
Brain health is very important to me.
My great-grandmother, grandmother, and father all died with dementia. And unfortunately, it seems to strike my family between the ages of 50 and 60.
I’m 55.
It’s estimated that 47.5 million people worldwide currently have some form of dementia. Though there is no known cure for many dementia-related illnesses, there is much we can do to maintain and even improve our brain health.
In this post, I’m sharing the results of my research on optimizing brain health. By enacting some of the following strategies, I’m living a richer and fuller life and improving my overall brain health at the same time.
What are you doing to improve your brain health?

DISCLAIMER: I am not a medical professional, so please check with your doctor before implementing any changes.
BRAIN HEALTH #1: Brain Training
I recently read High Percentage Wellness Steps*, which mentioned a case study of orphans who lived in an orphanage for the first three years of their lives. Many of them had larger-than-normal amygdalas (part of the brain). If the human brain can be shaped negatively by outward circumstances, then the reverse is also true. This lead researchers to the idea of brain plasticity, the idea that we have some measure of control over the shape of our brains. A Northwestern University Super Aging Project revealed that there are indeed octagenarians whose brains haven’t shrunk with aging, but instead appear the same as those in their 50s and 60s.
Though there are several brain training websites, the one hubby and I use is Lumosity.com. While many deny that this sort of brain training works, I honestly believe that Lumosity, in combination with many other strategies listed below, has improved my thinking ability and given me increased mental focus. It’s also been a fun past time, taking only a few minutes at least three days a week, and has proved to be a conversation topic for me and my husband.
The brain training games on Lumosity work the following areas: speed, memory, attention, flexibility, and problem solving. There are a wide variety of games, including: Highway Hazards (information processing), Eagle Eye (field of view), Disillusion (task switching), Trouble Brewing (divided attention), Memory Match (working memory), Raindrops (numerical calculation), Chalkboard Challenge (quantitative reasoning), Color Match (response inhibition), Familiar Faces (face-name recall), Lost in Migration (selective attention), Memory Matrix (spatial recall), Penguin Pursuit (spatial orientation), Pet Detective (planning), Speed Pack (visualization), and Word Bubbles Rising(verbal fluency).

BRAIN HEALTH #2: Keep On Learning New Things
Our society tends to relegate learning to children, young adults, and on-the-job training. But in all truth, our brains are meant to keep on learning new things. The adage “use it or lose it” certainly applies when it comes to our brains.
With the advent of the internet age, there is no excuse for not continuing to learn new things.
As most of you know, I’m a big believer in doing what we can to become producers rather than always consuming, so I made it my business to bone up on homesteading in many categories, such as raising chickens and rabbits, organic gardening, and beekeeping. Not only does this help my brain, but also gives me a new arsenal of information and skills.
Other new information for you to learn might include a new hobby, foreign language, or new musical instrument. Staying mentally active is a key factor in combatting the aging and shrinking of our brains.

BRAIN HEALTH #3: Use Your Non-Dominant Side
I recently had the opportunity to go snow skiing with my daughter-in-love and grandson. At first, I thought going with them might not be such a great idea, especially since I hadn’t skied in several years. But in keeping with my goal of maintaining and even improving my brain health, I decided to give it a try.
After dropping my grandson off at ski school, my daughter-in-love and I headed up the first lift and took the easiest way down. I quickly realized that my dominant side was working too hard. How did I know this?
First of all, my right hip began hurting. Secondly, my legs began shaking. Third, I was having trouble heading right with my right ski on the uphill side.
After several runs down the bunny slope I was able to correct this issue, but it reminded me that most of us lead with our dominant side without really thinking about it. I’ve read that it’s helpful to occasionally lead with the non-dominant side to improve our brain function.
A few ways I do this are to brush my teeth with my left hand rather than my right, hold eating utensils with my left hand, and write with my left hand from time to time. Any sort of switch up like this is actually good for our brains because it forces us to use the opposite side of our brains.

BRAIN HEALTH #4: Supplements & Herbs
Below you’ll find several supplements and herbs that are often recommended for brain function. I am not recommending that you take any or all of these. I’m simply providing the information so you can do your own research.
Note: Some of these may not mix well with your normal medications. So always check with a doctor first before adding supplements!)
ALA/ALC*
DHA and/or EPA (Omega-3 fatty acids)
Fish or Krill oil – Both of these Omega-3 fatty acids. Many doctors now advise the use of krill oil, which is animal-based rather than fish based. The reason for this is that some fish oils may be contaminated with mercury.
B Vitamins (particularly B1, B2, B6, B12) – According to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, “B12 and folic acid lower the levels of an amino acid in the blood that is often high in people with Alzheimer disease.” I’ve also read that getting folate from foods is much better than taking folic acid supplements.
Phosphatidylserine*
Zinc – This mineral is often low in elderly people and can help improve memory.
Antioxidants (such as Vitamins A, C, and E)
Coenzyme Q10
Gingko Biloba
Cinnamon
Magnesium threonate*
Vitamin D (Yes, we do need sunlight!)
Astaxanthin*

BRAIN HEALTH #5: Get the Proper Amount of Quality Sleep
Did you know that getting too much sleep can be just as bad as not getting enough sleep? While we all need varying amounts of sleep, most experts advise getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. More or less than this and you could be hurting your brain.
Here are some suggestions for getting a good night’s sleep:
Establish a regular sleep routine, including activities that help you wind down (warm bath, herbal teas, reading, light stretching exercises, etc.).
Establish a regular sleep schedule by simply going to bed and getting up at the same time each day.
Only nap if it doesn’t affect your night-time sleep.
Avoid over-stimulation before bedtime. This includes computers and television.
Meditation and focused attention to keep your thoughts from racing.

BRAIN HEALTH #6: Avoid Mercury and Aluminum
Mercury and aluminum can be found in canned fish and fish oil, dental fillings, nonstick cookware, vaccines, and even antiperspirants/deodorants. Personally I have stopped using antiperspirants with aluminum. I’m also careful to note if any of the recommended vaccines for people my age contain aluminum.

BRAIN HEALTH #7: Keep Your Blood Pressure in Check
Though it’s not a big surprise, heart and brain health often go hand in hand. What is good for your heart is also good for your brain. Keeping your blood pressure in check is a great way to insure that both your heart and your brain are protected.

BRAIN HEALTH #8: Avoid Statin and Anticholinergic Medications
This is definitely something you should discuss with your doctor.
Statin drugs are known to deplete levels of coenzyme Q10 in the brain. I was on statin drugs for a while for high cholesterol, but then I begin hearing horror stories and launched my own research. As it turned out, my cholesterol levels were high because of healthy cholesterol levels (HDL). After talking with my doctor, I came off the statin drugs completely. My cholesterol continues to be high (around 200), but only because of healthy cholesterol levels.
Lesson here? Always understand the why behind your medical numbers.
As I researched this post, I discovered that another medication I take for my fibromyalgia is an anticholinergic drug, so now my next step will be to discuss with my doctor a safe exit strategy for coming off this medication and finding a natural substance that achieves the same goal.

BRAIN HEALTH #9: Get Out of Your Rut
I have to confess that this can sometimes be difficult for me. I enjoy my rut, thank you very much.
Unfortunately, staying in my comfortable rut isn’t so great for my brain. So my goal for this aspect of brain health is to shoot for new experiences and places (hence the skiing adventure). And rather than take the same routes to the places I frequent, I try to take a different route to switch things up a bit.

BRAIN HEALTH #10: Memorization
Do you remember complaining about having to memorize information in school? I certainly do.
But it turns out that memorizing is great for our brains. Here are some ideas on things to memorize:
facts (states, state capitols, presidents, etc.)
Scripture
phone numbers
addresses
birthdays
word definitions
music
poetry (“Whose woods are these? I think I know. His house is in the village though…”) ;)
On a recent trip I concentrated on learning various makes and models of cars that I saw on the highway. I actually enjoyed this little exercise very much!

BRAIN HEALTH #11: Challenge Your Brain
This definitely goes right along with the other tips that deal with staying mentally fit, such as brain training, learning new things, and stepping out of our ruts. Here are just a few ways we can challenge our brains:
strategy games (chess, checkers, minesweeper, Battleship)
word games (crossword puzzles, word jumbles, Scrabble)
math games (Sudoku)
brain teasers (Braingle.com) and logic problems
One of my favorite places to find these sorts of games online is at USAToday.com: http://games.usatoday.com/AllGames
And here’s a game so you can challenge your brain right now!
It’s also important to push your brain in unaccustomed ways. As an example, I’m forcing myself to play through Beethoven sonatas. While I am a pianist, Beethoven is not my usual fare, and I find it extremely challenging. In short, I’m challenging my brain.

BRAIN HEALTH #12: Eat Brain-Healthy Foods
It’s been said that we are what we eat. Much research has been done on how foods impact our health, and this includes foods that help our brains. For example, there is evidence that a ketogenic diet can give our brains a boost. A Mediterranean diet combined with exercise can cut your Alzheimer’s risk. And research is being conducted on how low caloric intake might ward off dementia.
Here are some foods you might want to incorporate into your diet to improve your brain health:
fatty, cold-water fish (tuna, salmon)
darkly colored fruits and vegetables (These are antioxidant foods. Examples include: blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash, bell peppers, and red onion.)
foods high in B vitamins and calcium (These include almonds, beans, whole grains, dark leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, and sea vegetables such as kelp.)
high-fiber foods such as beans, oats and root vegetables (Yes, sweet potatoes!)
white meat found in chicken and other poultry
healthy oils (olive, coconut) – True story here. A few years ago, my mom sent me an interesting article link about a doctor whose husband began to have tremors and memory loss. After much research, she came to the conclusion that medium chain fats such as coconut oil could possibly reverse her husband’s symptoms. She put him on regiment of a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil a day, and he showed great improvement. Since then I’ve incorporated coconut oil into my diet my putting it in my morning cup of coffee. The tremors I was beginning to experience have all but disappeared!
other nuts, such as cashews and walnuts
dark chocolate (Yes, really!!!) :)
apple (They really do keep the doctor away!)
foods rich in folate (much better than folic acid), such as raw veggies and oranges
green tea
coffee (But only 1-2 cups a day)
oregano
eggs

BRAIN HEALTH #13: Maintain Social Connections
Staying socially active is a key factor in combatting the aging of our brains. Here are a few ideas to help maintain social connectivity:
Enroll in a course at your local community college
Weekly dates with friends
Call or email a friend
Social media interaction
Go out to dinner or to the movies
Join a sports club

BRAIN HEALTH #14: Get Regular Exercise
We all know the importance of exercise, but exercise remains one of the most difficult things for us to incorporate in our schedules. A huge percentage of people use the excuse of “not having enough time” to exercise, yet the majority of Americans find the time to watch 4-5 hours of television per day!
Exercise doesn’t have to be painful or boring. Just try to incorporate more activity into your day through some of the following:
hiking/walking
swimming
canoeing
dancing
strength training
balance and coordination exercises
I do think it’s important to get your heart pumping when you exercise. As mentioned previously, what is good for our hearts is also good for our brains. Improving blood flow to the brain is a high priority for me. That’s one reason that I’m saving my pennies for a FitBit!*

BRAIN HEALTH #15: Increase Water Consumption
Most of us don’t drink enough water. The recommendation is still 8-8 oz. glasses of water per day. Our brains are 78% water, so it only makes sense that we need to stay hydrated.
As a teacher, I attended a workshop several years ago on ways to help students improve their brain power during standardized testing. Included in the training was the importance of making sure the kids had plenty of water to drink. If it’s important for kids, it’s also important for the rest of us!

BRAIN HEALTH #16: Cut Back On or Cut Out Processed Foods
Unlike my ancestors, I literally grew up on processed foods. But more and more research is proving that processed foods are bad for us, and this includes our brains. Here are some foods to watch out for:
sugar – Many foods in America come with sugar and/or white flour, from bread to soft drinks to yogurt and more. Sugar is literally lurking in our foods unknown to most of us. Be sure to carefully read the labels to uncover this hidden sugar. Some doctors believe that Alzheimer’s is a type of diabetes, so too much sugar is definitely dangerous for our brains.

BRAIN HEALTH #17: Guard Your Eyesight
This point I included because of my own experience with my dad. As his vision declined so did his mental acuity.
A few years ago I was diagnosed with an eye ailment called Stargardt’s Disease, a form of macular degeneration. The good news for me was that I was diagnosed in my 40s while most with the disease (a form of macular are completely blind by their 20s.
I’m grateful that though my sight has deteriorated–especially in my left eye–I can still see enough to function. But to protect my brain health, I’m also doing what I can to protect my eyesight.

BRAIN HEALTH #18: Control Pain
Around the same time that I was diagnosed with Stargardt’s, I was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia. While mine is not near as bad as some reports I’ve read, I do have times when I hurt, and pain is known to affect our brain health.
The biggest downside of fibromyalgia for me has been that while my muscles contract like those of a normal person, they don’t relax normally. Any sort of repetitive action can take me out of commission for days. As you might imagine, this causes considerable pain which then affects my sleep. On days after a bad night’s sleep, the pain is worse. This causes a vicious cycle that is difficult to bring under control.
For those with painful illnesses, let me just say this: Do whatever you have to do to keep the pain under control.
For me this includes:
Epsom salt baths
OTC pain relievers – For a while I was on a prescription medication that I took every day. But as I learned how non-steroidal pain relievers affect our bodies, I opted to come off that medication and use acetominophen and iburprofen as needed instead.
Stretching exercises – I was fortunate enough to be able to see a physical therapist when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She taught me several stretching exercises which helped considerably. I hope to share these in a separate post in the near future.

BRAIN HEALTH #19: Manage Stress Effectively
While some stress is unavoidable and useful in helping us accomplish various tasks, too much is bad for our health. This includes our brains.
We live in a time when we have less to stress over than ever before. Example? Very few of us have to wonder when we’ll get to eat our next meal. In spite of the fact that we have less to stress over, we are the most stressed of any generation ever.
Here are some techniques to incorporate to help manage your stress:
Get out in nature
Practice mindfulness – This simply means being objectively aware of the stress and your reaction to it.
Relax – Some ways that I personally relax include massage (many times through the use of a tennis ball!), hot baths, and aromatherapy (I recently purchased lavender essential oil* and use it on my pillow at night to help me relax and sleep better. Though it is somewhat pricey, it does go a long way and lasts a long time.)
Meditation/Focused Attention – For a long time I avoided the meditation word, mainly because it conjured up images of a cross-legged, mantra-humming yoga guru. But even the Bible talks about meditation in the context of focusing one’s attention on God and His Word. That’s all meditation truly is: focused attention. As I’ve aged, I’ve experienced a sort of adult-onset ADD. I find that prayer is the biggest help, because it forces me to stay focused. If my mind wanders, I simply turn it back to my prayers. This has helped me tremendously, not just in brain health, but in my spiritual health as well.
Stretching exercises
Music therapy – Yes, I’m a musician and former music teacher, but I truly belief in the power of music to soothe our souls. And there is plenty of research to back that up, including the fact that listening to music boosts important brain chemicals. When I’m feeling stressed, I often head to YouTube for some worship music videos. It always makes me feel better.
Deep breathing – As a singer, trumpeter, and vocal coach, I’ve had to learn to breathe deeply. As my singing and playing declined, I noticed that I tend to take shallow breaths in my natural breathing. And I don’t think I’m alone. Deep breathing is important to our health, but it is also a great relaxation technique.
Have fun – As a Type A personality and over-achiever, I sometimes struggle with allowing myself the simple pleasure of having fun. But I’m trying to do better. Having fun needn’t be costly in either time or money. Simply make a list of things you enjoy doing. Try to incorporate at least one thing on that list into your daily schedule. It truly does make a difference.
Be grateful – One thing I’ve incorporated this year is writing down at least three things each day for which I’m grateful. This can be something as big as God’s Sovereignty or as simple as being able to flip a switch for light. Keeping this gratitude journal has helped me focus on the good rather than stressing over the bad.
Laugh – Laughter is like a workout for our insides. Even the simple act of genuine smiling can lift our spirits. Find a way to laugh, perhaps through a funny book or movie or even spending time with a child. Kids have the unique capacity to create laughter wherever they go!
Positivity – The Bible has much to say about how we think and what we think about. When I talk about positive thinking, I’m NOT talking about saying something like “The grass is green” over and over in the hopes that the grass will indeed turn green. Instead, I’m referring to choosing to see every person and situation from the best possible light. It’s all-too-easy to focus on the bad, but when we focus on the good instead, it truly does make us happier people and minimizes our stress.

BRAIN HEALTH #20: Find a Furry Friend
Did you know that animals–particularly dogs–can have a positive affect on our health? They reduce stress levels and improve our attitudes. They make us laugh. They comfort us when we’re feeling down.
If you don’t have your own pet, consider volunteering at your local animal shelter.

BRAIN HEALTH #21: Get Involved
This point definitely goes right along with maintaining social connectivity, but really takes it to a whole new level. When we’re involved in something bigger than ourselves, it improves our brain health. Some possible suggestions:

BRAIN HEALTH #22: Take Frequent Breaks
This one really steps on my toes. I get into the writing or writing-related zone and I rarely come up for air. But I’m taking steps in the right direction.
In the past year, I’ve started to use this online tomato timer to force myself to take breaks (or at least stand up for a few minutes). It has truly helped me do better in this department.
In truth, our brains need a break just as much as our bodies do. Yes, we need to challenge our brains, but we only hold ourselves back when we don’t give our brains a break.

BRAIN HEALTH #23: Stop Smoking
We’ve known for a long time that nicotine is a carcinogen and harmful to the lungs, but more and more research has uncovered how bad smoking is for our brains as well.

BRAIN HEALTH #24: Write
Though I stumbled into the world of writing for other reasons, I’m especially grateful that writing is also beneficial for my brain. Word choice, definitions, grammar, story structure, non-fiction outlines, the editing process and more all play a part in building my brain health.
While I’m not advocating that everyone become a professional writer, we can all keep journals and force ourselves to write as succinctly as possible. In addition, it’s helpful to use new words in our writing.

BRAIN HEALTH #25: Read
Since most of my blog and book readers are…ahem…readers, I figure that this is a great point to end on when it comes to brain health. Reading is great for our brains. It forces us to derive meaning from the written word, whether in fictional or non-fictional form.
Reading is also a form of fun and relaxation. In addition, we learn new things and gain new insights from our reading, which makes reading one of the best things we can do for our brains.

The Lady and the Mountain Call: A Christian Historical Romance Novel
The wild Montana mountains are no place for an aging widow to live alone with dementia. And when Cathleen Donaghue discovers the poor woman’s condition, there’s no way she’ll walk away without helping. After all, she left her comfortable Boston home to help her brothers with their mining town medical practice because she wanted to make a difference. But the wild elements she encounters on this mission of mercy are nothing like she expected, especially the widow’s mountain man son who shows up out of the blue.
Trapper Reuben Scott planned only a quick visit to his parents’ homestead to check on them and tan his winter hides, but the strange woman standing at his mother’s stove is a shock. And then she tells him his father has died and his mother is losing her mind. The sad news may bring an end to the life he’s loved—trapping, living in the wild freedom of these mountains, working closely with the Indians—no one demanding he measure up. But he’ll do anything for his family, what little he has left, that is. Even deal with the city woman who seems to connect with his confused mother.
When tragedy strikes Cathleen’s family, she’s forced to choose between duty and the people who need her most. And the wrong decision could quickly lead to disaster. As the danger spirals out of her control, this impassive mountain man may be the only one with the skills to save her. But can she trust him with her heart, too?

An unforgettable romance set in Victorian England, Bride of A Distant Isle is the engrossing story of Annabel Ashton, who fights to save her family home and her mother’s honor while trying to figure out if the man she loves wants her—or just wants to use her to achieve his own ambitions.
Miss Annabel Ashton is a teacher at the Rogers School for Young Ladies in Winchester when she takes a brief visit to her family home, Highcliffe Hall at Milford-on-Sea. She believes her stay will be short but soon learns that she will not be returning to the safety of the school. Instead, she remains at Highcliffe, at the mercy of her cousin, Edward Everedge.
Annabel protests, but as the illegitimate daughter of a woman who died in an insane asylum, she has little say. Edward is running out of money and puts the house up for sale to avoid financial ruin. He insists that Annabel marry, promising her to a sinister, frightening man. But as the house gets packed for sale, it begins to reveal disquieting secrets. Jewelry, artifacts, and portraits mysteriously appear, suggesting that Annabel may be the true heir of Highcliffe.
She has only a few months to prove her legitimacy, perhaps with assistance from the handsome but troubled Maltese Captain Dell’Acqua. But does he have Annabel’s best interests at heart?
And then, a final, most ominous barrier to both her inheritance and her existence appears: a situation neither she nor anyone else could have expected. Will Annabel regain her life and property—and trust her heart—before it’s too late?

It’s been said that the best time to find love is when you aren’t looking for it.
Rachel Stephens was a prime example of that. She was solely focused on completing her last year of dental school and love wasn’t even on her radar.
She also wasn’t excited about having London Ryder has a houseguest. The two weren’t necessarily the best of friends, so when London came to L.A. to visit her A-list actor boyfriend, Rachel wondered why she asked to stay with her. In fact, she was beginning to wonder if this actor was really even London’s boyfriend in the first place. But she decided to just grin and bear it.
Rachel never expected London to bring her along on a film shoot. She certainly never expected to spend an afternoon alone with the actor who might just turn out to be the man of her dreams. Then again, sometimes we have to let go of our expectations and accept our destiny.

Have You Found Your Happily Ever After?
Happily ever after.
From childhood we are programmed to seek after that happily ever after with these fairy tale words: “And they all lived happily ever after.”
As a writer of Christian romance and romantic suspense, part of my self-imposed training involved learning how to write stories with a happily ever after ending. As the divine Author of Life, God also has written a happily ever after story. His story.
Unfortunately, many of us have become disillusioned with life, with thoughts that “happily ever after” is nothing but a myth, fairy tale, or convenient lie people tell themselves.
Others of us might believe in happily ever after, but only for the future…after Jesus returns to take us home or when we breathe our last breath here on earth to take our first breath in heaven.
Through this post I hope to prove that happily ever after does exist. Not just some day in the future, but right now.
Find your “happily ever after” right here and now.

Happily Ever After Through the Cross
God designed man to find their wholeness and happiness only through Him. Like an automobile designed to run on gasoline, we are designed to run on God within us.
But when Eve decided to taste the forbidden fruit and then feed it to her husband, that happily ever after ending was trashed and destroyed. As broken people, Adam and Eve (and the rest of mankind) were unable to find their way back to God and their happily ever after ending.
Praise God that He had a plan. That plan involved coming to earth as a helpless and vulnerable baby, embarking on an earthly ministry to show people who He truly was, and then sacrificing Himself on the cross to bring us back to Himself.
To put it simply, man’s brokenness and helplessness was healed through the blood of Jesus.
The punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Hopeless
Can you imagine how Jesus’ followers must have felt as He died and was buried in a dark tomb?
As that enormous stone was rolled in front of the entrance to the tomb, snuffing out all light, so their hopes and dreams–indeed their faith–was snuffed out as well.
We’ve all been there haven’t we? Life never turns out the way we hoped it would. The plans and dreams of optimistic adolescence turn to ashes and slip through our fingers. We all know how it feels to experience the hopelessness Jesus’ followers felt.
They had hoped He would be their political Messiah to save them from Roman rule and oppression, totally missing the point of many of His teachings on what He had come to accomplish. Their dreams died with Jesus on the cross and were buried with Him in that cold, dark tomb.
Feeling hopeless? No need to. There IS hope! Details here:

Happily Ever After Right Now and Right Here
The sun burst forth in brilliant rays that first Easter morning as the women made their way to the tomb. Yes, their hopes had been crushed, but they still loved Jesus enough to want a proper burial for Him.
Astonishment surely must have made their jaws sag as they first glimpsed the open tomb. Fear and trembling must have shaken their bodies at the sight of the angel who told them Jesus was alive and not to be found among the dead. Excitement must have propelled their steps and unleashed their lips as they told the disciples what they had discovered.
Here’s the point: The resurrection changed everything.
The resurrection of Jesus changed everything! Find out more:

Not just for Jesus. Not just for the first-century disciples. But for us.
Not just for the past. Not just for the future. But for the here and now.
Hopelessness was banished along with sin and death. Fear and worry no longer have a place among believers. Even the most tempestuous of life storms cannot change our happily ever after. Joy and hope should spill from every pore and fiber of our being.
Our happily ever after has already begun and will culminate with a heavenly home so wonderful there are no words to fully describe its bliss.
For believers, our “happily ever after” has already started!

Happily Ever After Verses
As we move forward in our happily ever after, let’s allow the following verses to renew our hope, quadruple our joy, and unleash our tongues to share this great good news with others.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10, NASB)
Now God has not only raised the Lord, but will also raise us up through His power. (1 Corinthians 6:14, NASB)
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans 8:11, NASB)
I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 1:19-20, NLT)
Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.” (2 Corinthians 6:16)
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23, NASB)
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15)
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. (1 John 2:27)
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified. (Isaiah 61:1-3, NASB)
“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” (Romans 5:5, NIV)
“We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.” (1 John 4:13-16, NIV)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6, NASB)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26, NASB)

DANGER: 3 Actions All Christians Must Absolutely Take Now
Danger signals sent electrical jolts through my body.
“I’ve never seen it this bad in my entire lifetime.”
My heart cried out those words as I spoke them into the phone in recent conversation with my mom.
Anger.
Frustration.
Polarity.
Sin.
America is truly at a crossroads. Simply put, we are in trouble–spiritually, morally, economically, politically.
As followers of Christ and Almighty God, we hold the key. The solution. The only hope for our country, our children, and our grandchildren.
And that hope is God.
If you’d like to receive two free Amazon best-selling Christian fiction novels, a LifeSword Bible study on forgiveness, and a LifeSword devotional on new beginnings, CLICK HERE.
Please attend the DecisionAmerica Tour in your state or nearby city.In this post I want to share three actions for all believers to take to impact our country for good and for God. All of these I picked up from attending the last week at our state capital, an event which I believe should be attended by as many believers as possible–either in person or through live streaming on the internet.
And it can’t stop there.
If we truly desire to see God lifted up and change enacted in America, we must keep on keeping on in these three must-take actions by every Christian.
3 actions all Christians need to take now! #Pray #Vote #Run
Click To Tweet
1. DANGER: Pray!
In Ephesians 6, Paul lists the spiritual warfare of every believer: the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes ready with the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and God’s Word as our sword of the Spirit. Truly the problems we see and face in America comprise a spiritual battle of astronomical proportions. Suiting up in God’s armor is of paramount importance.
But let us not forget what comes next in this Ephesians 6 passage, for surely it is key to success as we take our positions in God’s army.
With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. (Ephesians 6:18-20, NASB)
I know I’ve said it before, but it cannot be over-stated. We must pray, and pray like never before!!! From a military standpoint, prayer is our direct, 24/7 connection with our Commander-in-Chief!
But don’t take my word for it. Take God’s!
Digging Deeper: 2 Corinthians 7:14; Psalm 107:28-30; Matthew 7:7; James 5:13-16; Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:24; John 14:13-14; Mark 9:29; Philippians 4:6-7; 1 John 5:14-15; 1 John 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Colossians 4:2; Jeremiah 29:11-13; Romans 12:12; Psalm 145:18; Jeremiah 33:3; Matthew 18:20; Hebrews 4:16; Psalm 18:6; James 1:6; 1 Peter 4:7; James 4:2; Acts 1:14; Psalm 55:17; Isaiah 55:6; 1 Timothy 2:8.
How are we to pray and what do we pray for?
We pray humbly, expressing our complete dependence on God as our only help and hope.
We seek His face before we seek His hand.
We confess our individual sins, the sins of our fathers, and the sins of America–including abortion, same-sex marriage, pornography, violent and sexually-explicit entertainment in the form of movies, television, and literature, materialism, and complacency/apathy among American believers. We may not be personally responsible for many of these, but we will be held responsible if we don’t do everything within our power to stop it!
We repent and turn back to God with all our hearts.
We acknowledge His sovereignty and our faith in Him.
We pray for His will, which includes overcoming Satan and evil.
We pray for our leaders.
We pray for godly, God-fearing, Bible-believing, and God-seeking leaders.
We pray for the elections.
We pray for the lost and for laborers for the harvest, including ourselves in that number.
We pray for spiritual awakening and revival–not just in America, but around the world.
We pray for a mighty moving of God’s Spirit upon hearts and lives.
We pray for the welfare of America.
We pray for the healing and cleansing of our country.
We pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world.
2. DANGER: Vote!
It is estimated that several million Christian voters just didn’t show up at the last presidential election. Shame on us!
I know that it’s easy to feel like our votes don’t count, especially with the no-longer-needed electoral college in place and the inefficiencies (and downright illegal practices) of various polling places.
Posted by Cathy Bryant on Tuesday, March 1, 2016
But if we don’t at least show up and vote, we are in effect voting for evil to win.
Jesus said it like this: “He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters.” (Matthew 12:30, NASB)
And please don’t be one of those who believe that Christians have no business being involved in the political process. Again, don’t take my word for it. Take God’s!!!
Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. (Exodus 18:21)
Don’t just vote with the crowd so you can be on the winning side. This cartoon I recently shared on Facebook shows the fallacy of that kind of mob mentality:
Food for thought…
Posted by Cathy Bryant on Tuesday, March 1, 2016
And before we vote, it’s important to educate ourselves on the candidates and where they stand on the issues. Please don’t believe everything you see and hear, whether online, on the television, or from friends and neighbors. Find reliable sources and do your homework. The following two photos were taken from .

This short video from a CNN interview with Franklin Graham underscores the urgency of the situation:
And here is an article from 2012 that is worth a read: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/11/19/are-christians-at-fault-for-obamas-re-election-win-rev-franklin-graham-says-yes/
3. DANGER: Run For Office!
I know.
I had the same thoughts running through my head at the DecisionAmerica prayer rally I attended as Franklin Graham encouraged Christians to run for public office.
Who me?
All sorts of excuses unleashed in my brain, my thoughts rampaging at a million miles per second. I don’t have time. I’m not qualified. Who will listen to me? I hate confrontation. I hate politics. (And I could literally go on and on in the excuses department…)
But here’s the truth of the matter. If Christians don’t run, we can rest assured that non-believers will. Do we really want them and their secularist mind-set running our schools, our towns, our counties, our states, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White House? If nothing else, the last eight years should serve as both proof and warning that this is not the direction we want to go.

If we don’t stand up and take our places, we will deserve everything we get is return. We will be forced to reap what we sow.
According to Ezekiel 33, God has placed us as watchmen for our country and world. What better place to carry this out than as a public servant?
Throughout His earthly ministry, God commanded us to impact our world through both word and deed as the salt and light He wants us to be. That is the message of my recent book The Power of Godly Influence: A 29-Day Devotional Journey in a nutshell.
One way to serve Him and impact our world for Him is through running for public office.

How To Forgive & Remove Thorns From Your Heart
It will happen sooner or later. And it will most likely happen more than once during our lifetimes. At some point we will all be hurt, and sometimes wounded so badly that it feels like there’s just no getting over it. Learning how to forgive offenses and offenders is one of those life skills each of us must acquire.
Even as hard as moving past those inexcusable offenses can be, there’s something even more difficult we have to deal with, and that’s ourselves. How are we going to respond to the unjust, the hurtful, the downright evil?

How To Forgive – God’s Way Over Ours
You would think we’d want to let go of our hurt as soon as possible, but most of the time our human side doesn’t want to let go of the wrong committed against us. The thorns of offense dig under our flesh, buried beneath layers of soft tissue. And the longer we let those thorns remain, the more festered, calloused, and unforgiving we become.
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
Yes, God’s alternative requires much from us, and it often seems unfair in light of all we’ve suffered. It requires moving past both the offense and the offender, handing our grievances over to God, and trusting Him to handle it in a much better way than we ever could.
It also means yanking out those thorns before the hurt grows worse. Sometimes in this process we uncover more thorns than we originally anticipated.
But once the thorn removal is finished, we have a pleasant surprise awaiting–the beautiful and fragrant rose of the Lord’s peace and healing for our damaged emotions.
The Cost of Not Forgiving
That’s the sad thing about grudges, isn’t it? As we grasp tightly to those thorns, we’re only hurting ourselves. To make matters worse, the sharp barbs cause collateral damage, the prickly points of resentment and bitterness shooting up like weeds, affecting everyone with whom we come in contact.
It’s only as we let go of the thorns that we’re able to once more experience peace, joy, love, gladness . . . and the delight of our fellowship with Christ.
You see, until we’re willing to walk the path of Jesus, to join Him in saying with all sincerity “Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they’re doing,” our relationship with Him and the Father are stalled. Here’s why.
While we were at our most unlovely, the very enemies of God, Jesus forgave us everything. He took those thorns and sharp barbs so we wouldn’t have to. In light of all He’s done for us, how can we then turn around and demand retribution from our enemies?
Other than prayer, the best way I know of releasing the thorns is to remember this: God will never ask us to forgive others anymore than what He’s already forgiven us.
So let’s leave the thorns behind and reach for the Rose instead.

The Hebrews call me prophetess, the Egyptians a seer.
But I am neither. I am simply a watcher of Israel
and the messenger of El Shaddai.
When He speaks to me in dreams, I interpret. When He whispers a melody, I sing.
At eighty-six, Miriam had devoted her entire life to loving El Shaddai and serving His people as both midwife and messenger. Yet when her brother Moses returns to Egypt from exile, he brings a disruptive message. God has a new name – Yahweh – and has declared a radical deliverance for the Israelites.
Miriam and her beloved family face an impossible choice: cling to familiar bondage or embrace uncharted freedom at an unimaginable cost. Even if the Hebrews survive the plagues set to turn the Nile to blood and unleash a maelstrom of frogs and locusts, can they weather the resulting fury of the Pharaoh?
Enter an exotic land where a cruel Pharaoh reigns, pagan priests wield black arts, and the Israelites cry out to a God they only think they know.

Encounter the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth in this culmination of the Jerusalem Chronicles.
How could Jesus—who preached righteousness before God, and love and mercy toward neighbors—be so hated and pursued? To the Temple officials, he was a threat to the livelihood and authority of the priesthood. To Herod Antipas, he was a threat to his ambition to be the King of the Jews. And to the Roman overlords, he was seen as a dangerous threat; a man who commanded an army of the common people. He could heal wounds, offer miraculous provisions, and even raise from the dead. If Jesus had accepted popular acclaim and become an earthly king, he would have been unstoppable.
Jesus’s last days are explored through three people who interacted with him: Governor Pilate, for whom Judea will either make or break his career; Pilate’s wife, Claudia, desperately seeking aid for her much loved, crippled son; and Centurion Marcus Longinus, caught in the middle between loyalty to the Empire, love for Claudia, and an ever-increasing belief in Jesus as the Son of God. After encountering Jesus, none of them will ever be the same.

From New York Times bestselling author and former Muslim Nabeel Qureshi comes this personal, challenging, and respectful answer to the many questions surrounding jihad, the rise of ISIS, and Islamic terrorism.
San Bernardino was the most lethal terror attack on American soil since 9/11, and it came on the heels of a coordinated assault on Paris. There is no question that innocents were slaughtered in the name of Allah and in the way of jihad, but do the terrorists’ actions actually reflect the religion of Islam? The answer to this question is more pressing than ever, as waves of Muslim refugees arrive in the West seeking shelter from the violent ideology of ISIS.
Setting aside speculations and competing voices, what really is jihad? How are we to understand jihad in relation to our Muslim neighbors and friends? Why is there such a surge of Islamist terrorism in the world today, and how are we to respond?
In Answering Jihad, bestselling author Nabeel Qureshi (Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus) answers these questions from the perspective of a former Muslim who is deeply concerned for both his Muslim family and his American homeland.

A daily devotional book for gardeners and non-gardeners alike.
Much of God’s Word references gardens. From the garden of Eden to the garden of Gethsemane–from the garden of the tomb to the garden described in Revelation–gardens are surely important to God.
But even more important to our Creator is the work He does in the gardens of individual lives. Surely the human heart and soul is where He does His best work, as He turns chaos and barrenness into beauty and fruitfulness.
During His earthly ministry, Jesus often referenced seeds, soil, sowing, and other agricultural topics, all of which carry rich meaning in the context of human lives.
So there is much for us to learn from gardening as revealed in God’s Word. These life lessons can make all the difference–not only in how we live our lives–but also in our productivity and fruitfulness as believers.
Our Master Gardener will take our humble and submitted lives and turn them into a bountiful harvest for His Kingdom.
Join us on this 31-day devotional journey as we use the basics of gardening to better understand God’s masterful work in our lives.

Thanks for the Prayers
Good morning, friends! Just wanted to say thank you for your prayers. We are under contract to sell our house. Now we’re praying for the inspection and appraisal process to run smoothly, as well as where we head from here. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that I probably won’t be on FB much over the coming weeks as we maneuver through the moving process and finding jobs and another place to live. Once the dust settles, I hope to be back on. I’ll check in as I can. Much love to you all!
