10 Sure Ways to Make a Powerful Impact

The Power of Godly Influence by Cathy Bryant AVAILABLE ON AMAZON *(Free for Kindle Unlimited)

My latest devotional book, THE POWER OF GODLY INFLUENCE, is all about how believers are to be people of powerful impact and influence. Jesus surely wouldn’t have called us the salt and light of the world otherwise.

I don’t mean to imply by this post that we can only be people of powerful impact by giving money, but that is certainly one way in which we can make a difference.

We all struggle with finances from time to time, but one of the best ways we can reduce money’s hold on us to give it away, especially in those times when we don’t feel like we have a dime to spare.

I know you’ve probably heard it a million times before, but compared to the majority of our world, even the poorest Americans are wealthy. What better way to use our wealth than making an eternal impact on the lives of others?

An even more important way to make a powerful impact is through your prayers. Many of the organizations below also offer a prayer ministry opportunity.

I do want to qualify that although I support some of these organizations through prayer and financial means, I am not currently associated with them in any other way.

Check out these 10 Christ-centered ministries as a way to make a powerful impact:

New Christian (Non) Fiction Friday Finds
Life Lessons From My Garden by Cathy Bryant “I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener.” -John 15:1

A daily devotional book for gardeners and non-gardeners alike.

Much of God’s Word references gardens. From the garden of Eden to the garden of Gethsemane–from the garden of the tomb to the garden described in Revelation–gardens are surely important to God.

But even more important to our Creator is the work He does in the gardens of individual lives. Surely the human heart and soul is where He does His best work, as He turns chaos and barrenness into beauty and fruitfulness.

During His earthly ministry, Jesus often referenced seeds, soil, sowing, and other agricultural topics, all of which carry rich meaning in the context of human lives.

So there is much for us to learn from gardening as revealed in God’s Word. These life lessons can make all the difference–not only in how we live our lives–but also in our productivity and fruitfulness as believers.

Our Master Gardener will take our humble and submitted lives and turn them into a bountiful harvest for His Kingdom.

Join us on this 31-day devotional journey as we use the basics of gardening to better understand God’s masterful work in our lives.

Daily Devotional Excerpt from Life Lessons From My Garden
DAY 1: Our Lives, God’s Garden

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener.”

-John 15:1

The Gardener wanders through the garden, His eyes taking in all the work to be done.

Everywhere He looks, there are areas which need His attention.

Weeds exist side-by-side with healthy plants, threatening to take up all the water and nourishment from the soil.

He stoops to look more closely at the dirt. Hard-packed, dry, and stony. More work.

The Gardener stands once more, yet this time His eyes don’t register the work which must be done. Instead He sees what can be.

That sunny spot would be perfect for a flowering vine. And with a little soil improvement most of the area was more-than-capable of producing an abundant harvest of fruit and beauty.

Yes, this garden would take years of effort and work, but in the end, the results would be well-worth any expense of time and effort.

God is truly the Gardener of our souls and lives. Sometimes when we look in the mirror and see ourselves as we are, it’s enough to make our shoulders sag in defeat. How can we ever reach that place of getting past our human frailties–indeed our human sin–to be the productive people God desires?

That’s the good news in this story. In His story.

Because of Jesus, who is the Vine, God is able to take a life humbly submitted to His care and tending to produce in us far more than we could ever hope for or imagine.

Yes, it will take work. And sometimes that digging and probing and pruning and de-weeding can be painful. But if we’re willing to allow the Gardener to do His work in us–even though it will take a human lifetime–we will look back in gratitude for what He does in us and through us.

Thank you for joining me on this journey into the life lessons we can learn concerning our very lives, our gardens.

Heavenly Father, we are so blessed to have You as the Gardener of our souls and lives. As we make this journey together, we pray You will make us acutely aware of the work You are doing in each of our lives. We also pray that we will humbly lay our lives before You, allowing You to do Your work so we might produce abundant fruit for You and Your Kingdom. Lord, no matter how long, how difficult, and even how painful, we thank You in advance for the great privilege of being used by You. Thank You for doing in us and through us a work that is beyond our human comprehension. In the name of Your Son Jesus we pray. Amen.

Food For Thought: Take a close look at the garden of your life. What work do you see which needs to be done to tend that garden? What steps will you take to yield yourself to the work of the Gardener’s hands?

(Excerpt taken from Life Lessons From My Garden.)

Which Title Won? See the Wonderful Results Here

New Book TitleI’m excited to announce that we now have a winning title for the seventh Miller’s Creek novel!

And honestly, I’m delighted with the title that you all helped me choose.

Why?

Because it truly represents our heroine’s heart.

But before I reveal the winning title, please allow me to introduce the story to those just tuning in to our search.

The title for next #MillersCreek novel by @Cathy_Bryant decided by readers. See it here:

New Miller’s Creek Novel Coming Spring 2016

Here’s the book description for the next Miller’s Creek novel:

A transformed wild-child returns to Miller’s Creek to care for her ailing father and face the judgmental ranch manager she’s always loved. When a flood threatens Miller’s Creek and their respective properties, Bella joins forces with Clay to protect what they both hold dear. Though Bella attempts to persuade Clay and others that she’s not the same person they remember, all her efforts come to naught when nasty rumors jeopardize her teaching career. Now on shaky ground, Bella is forced to depend solely on God to plow through the false accusations of a student who has shredded what was left of her reputation. But is it too little too late?

When we began our quest for the next book title, I had sixteen really good options, all which pointed toward Bella’s struggle for freedom from her checkered past. At first, I didn’t have one that especially stood out, which is exactly why I reached out to my reader friends for their help.

But as the first week of competition played out, one of the titles became very important to me. And that title was eliminated in the first round!

But I stuck to my guns in carrying through with the Clash of the Titles competition, and I am so glad I did. My reader friends were spot on in their choice, as usual.

Here are the sixteen titles we started with:

Chained Free
The Path I Follow
Crossways
Freedom’s Way
Run Free
Freedom’s Journey
The Path Behind Me
Freedom’s Quest
Freeway’s Cross
Highway to Freedom
Still I Will Follow
Freedom’s Run
Freeways
Freed
I’ll Always Follow
Freedom’s Slave

If you’re interested in viewing the previous week’s results, you can do so with the links to these posts:

See How To Help Choose My Next Book Title (Round 1 – Clash of the Titles)
Round 2 – Clash of the Titles
Semi-Finals – Clash of the Titles
Finals – Clash of the Titles

And the Winning Title Is…

STILL I WILL FOLLOW! It won by 68% over The Path I Follow.

Let me give a shout out to all of you who voted each week to help us get down to just one title. I appreciate your help so much.

Despite all that the story heroine Bella has been through and the chains from her past, one thing characterizes her. She is determined to follow Christ no matter the cost. Still I Will Follow is the title that needed to win to show Bella’s determined devotion. So again, “Thank You!”

What’s Next in the Novel-Making Process?

I’m currently finishing up the rough draft of Still I Will Follow–I love that this story finally has a name! My goal is to have the rough draft completed by the end of this week. Though I’m about a week behind where I hoped to be, the external story is coming along nicely.

Then I will take the book through three or four rounds of edits before I pass the book off to beta readers for their input. (More on that coming soon…)

In addition to finishing the rough draft and edits by the end of March 2016, I’ll also be working on the cover and starting to round up ideas for the book’s cover reveal party, launch party, and virtual tour. (And you thought being an author was a piece of cake…)

Prayer Request:

I still need your help, friends, this time in the prayer department. Not since I wrote The Way of Grace in 2012 have I struggled so with the spiritual theme of a story. With the third Miller’s Creek novel, I wanted so badly to accurately portray grace that I wrestled with the best way to make the story reveal that oh-so important concept.

I’m having the same difficulty with freedom. Right now, it’s like a swirling hornet’s nest in my brain. Even as believers, we can end up enslaved to so many things: others’ opinions, our jobs, our wealth, etc. Through Jesus we can break those chains. True freedom is only found in Christ. Without Him, there is no freedom. My problem comes in trying to have the story adequately portray both the chains we take on and the freedom that is ours.

Please pray that Biblical freedom will “gel” in my heart and brain so I might make the concept strong and real through the story line of Still I Will Follow.

Thank you so much for your prayer report as I finish up the next Miller’s Creek novel!

Still I will follow,

Cathy Bryant Christian Author P.S. Here’s a sermon from James Merritt which I found really helpful in my quest to better understand the freedom that is ours in Christ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUuMaU7gBf0. Now if I can just figure out how to bring out these truths through the story.

But her interest soon turns to concern as tragic events from the diary happen in Christy’s world, ninety years to the date of their first occurrence.

About the Book

The Legend of the Easter Robin This newly illustrated edition of The Legend of the Easter Robin renews the wonder and charm of the original and timeless tale written by Dandi Daley Mackall. With new vibrant artwork from New York Times bestselling illustrator, Richard Cowdrey, this holiday classic is brought to life for a new generation. The Legend of the Easter Robin tells the story of Tressa, whose grandmother reveals to her the story of a small robin who saw Jesus struggling and soared to help him. This Easter tale reminds Christians everywhere how much Jesus sacrificed for us and how much he loves us.

In the center of the nest lay one perfect egg, the color of a spring sky. The father robin sat on a branch nearby, guarding his family. Tressa spotted raccoon tracks below and a blue jay eyeing the nest.

“Gran, how are we going to keep the egg safe?”

“We’ll have to leave that one to the Creator,” Gran said.

Robins have built a nest on the window ledge at Grandmother’s house! Tressa is thrilled―and concerned. What will happen to the sky-blue egg laid by the mother robin? As more eggs appear, Tressa witnesses the daily drama of the robins’ nest and learns how God cares for all creatures. Besides watching the birds, there are Easter eggs to color. And there is a very special story to hear―a tale of long ago about one small bird with a very big heart.

How did the robin get its red breast? Tressa is about to find out as Gran tells her the story of the Easter robin. Brought to life with colorful, tender illustrations, The Legend of the Easter Robin will captivate and teach your child about compassion and faith.

My Review of “The Legend of the Easter Robin”

I was excited to have the opportunity to read and review this children’s book. Below you’ll find what I loved about The Legend of the Easter Robin and the one thing that concerned me.

The illustrations are lovely. There was nothing not to love about the beautiful illustrations in the book. They almost hearkened to my own childhood, but with much more exquisite details. The cover above shows how well-done the illustrations in the book are, and I’ve also included a couple of more pages from the book below. I especially liked how the main story’s illustrations were in color and the illustrations of the actual legend were in black and white.
The main story a little girl, her grandmother, and the robins is well-done. As a grandmother of three, I truly believe that little ones will relate to Tressa’s concern for the robins and their eggs. I do think this story will appeal more to young children in the 3-6 age range.
My main disappointment with the book is that I don’t believe the legend of how the robin got a red breast is appropriate for children so young. When it comes down to it, no matter how sweet a legend is, it is a man-made story. As a mother, grandmother, and former elementary-school teacher, young children tend to take things very literally. While some might “get” the legend, I think it will be confusing for most kids. Also, the legend only covers the crucifixion of Jesus, while the Easter holiday points to the resurrection of Jesus, not His death. The resurrection is completely left out of this story that is subtitled as “an Easter story of compassion and faith.”

I do recommend this book, but only with parents who intend to “add to” the story for the young children for whom this book is obviously written. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Time For The Finals!

The twelve inches of snow we had a couple of weeks ago are all gone, so apparently our plan to beat the winter doldrums is working. :)

Now on to our voting for the final round. Just like in the previous weeks, please ask yourself this question: Which of these titles is the most intriguing and compelling and would make me want to read more?

Once again, here’s the book blurb to help give you a sense of the story.

For those of you who are new to the Miller’s Creek novels, they’re all Christian contemporary romance or romantic suspense, and they have a “journey” theme with words in the titles such as roads, path, way, pilgrimage, and bridge. To check them out a little more closely, this link will get you where you want to be: http://www.CatBryant.com/books/.

See How To Share the Wonderful Story Here (+ Excerpt)

In each book I write, I hope reader’s glimpse a bigger story–a wonderful story–one we should absolutely share.

That is especially true of a simple Christmas novella I released in November 2015 entitled PIECES ON EARTH.

Why that particular book out of all the books I’ve written?

Because it shelters a bigger story within the story. A story so big and epic and wonderful–so capable of impacting lives well beyond the limits of this earthly lifetime–that every human needs to hear it and give it strong consideration.

How To  Share the Wonderful Story in 10 Steps

Of course the wonderful story I’m referring to is the story of redemption.

In PIECES ON EARTH, a young mother is trying to overcome two problems. The outer story and the first of the two problems deals with Liv trying to find God’s peace in the midst of life’s broken pieces. Her husband is deployed to Afghanistan right before Christmas, shattering her dream of their first Christmas together in years. In addition his deployment robs her of the opportunity to share some very good news with her husband.

Liv’s second problem in the book was how to share the bigger picture of the Bible with her young daughter rather than several smaller disconnected stories.

It is this second story that I want to address in this post, with these facets of the wonderful story Liv tells her daughter Chesney over several weeks.

Adam & Eve & the Perfect Garden – God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the garden with everything they would need to thrive already in place.
Deceived by Satan and Broken – Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent and disobeyed God, resulting in their relationship with God being broken into pieces. But God made a promise to them that He would one day send a Fixer to mend those broken pieces.
World Grows More Evil and Destroyed by Flood – Cain, the oldest son of Adam and Eve, killed his younger brother. More broken pieces. The world continued to grow more and more evil, so God determined to save a godly remnant through Noah and his family from a flood that destroyed the rest of mankind. The rainbow was God’s promise of peace to never again destroy the world by flood.
Men Continue To Wait for the Promised Fixer – Though Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah were all God-fearing men, they were also broken like those before them. But they continued to wait for God’s promise of a Fixer.
The Passover Lamb & Moses Delivers the People – Moses was a broken man, too, but God chose him to deliver His chosen people from slavery in Egypt. The night before Pharaoh finally let the people go, they celebrated the first Passover by killing a lamb, which served as a prophecy for what would happen when the Fixer finally came.
The Young Nation of Israel’s Cycle of Sin and Demand for a King – As the young nation of Israel moved into the Promised Land they wanted a king like the nations around them. Though God warned them what it would be like, they still wanted a king. But in choosing an earthly king, they in effect, rejected God as their King. Over and over again, the people would sink into sin, be led into captivity, cry out to God, and then be delivered.
Prophets Sent By God With More Promises of the Fixer – God sent prophets to the people to warn them against sin and to continue to tell them about the coming Fixer. But the people still didn’t listen.
God Sends His Son Jesus Who Died For Our Broken Pieces – God finally sends the Fixer, but not in the way people expected. Rather than being a King, He came as a baby born to poor parents in a stable. Then He grew up to die for all of them just like the lamb in the story of Moses and God’s chosen people.
Jesus is Resurrected & Promises His Spirit and Peace – But then something miraculous happened. Jesus was resurrected from the dead and appeared to His followers. Before He ascended into heaven, Jesus promised His followers that He’d send His Spirit to be with them forever. He also promised them peace in place of their pieces.
Jesus Is Coming Back to Take Us Home, Fixing Us From the Inside-Out – One day Jesus will return to take us home with Him. Until that time, all those who believe in Him are in the process of being fixed from the inside-out, becoming more and more like Jesus.

Can you see how telling the story this way reveals God’s plan of redemption? It’s easy enough for a child to understand, yet potent enough to soften the most calloused of human hearts.

Excerpt from PIECES ON EARTH

POE right facing reducedOnce back at the house, Liv looked on as her daughter scaled the kitchen island bar stool and scooted around until she sat facing Liv in the kitchen.

Liv spread peanut butter on one half of the bread slice and grape jelly on the other half. “I’ve been meaning to ask you about the Bible stories Daddy’s been telling you at bedtime. Do you like the new Bible story book Grandma Hope sent?” Liv smiled as she thought of her mother. Though generally quiet and retiring, as well as diminutive in stature, the woman’s faith was larger than life. And when it came to her grandchildren knowing about God, she left no stone unturned. Her mom had rightfully earned the title of faith warrior for their families, determined that all of her grandkids would be with her in heaven some day. Liv folded the bread and slid the sandwich plate across the counter toward her daughter, waiting for an answer.

Chesney picked up the sandwich and took a big bite, nodding her head at the same time. “Yeah.”

“What are the stories about?”

Speaking around bites of sandwich, her daughter answered. “Well, there was one about King Daniel.”

“You mean King David.”

Her daughter’s face went blank, and she stopped chewing momentarily. “I thought David was the one in the fiery furnace.”

“No, that would be Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.”

“Oh, those three guys.”

Liv couldn’t help the smile that flitted to her lips.

“So those three guys were in the fiery furnace and the lion’s den?” Chesney had her head cocked to one side, her dark red wavy hair dangling down.

Now Liv laughed outright. “No, Daniel was in the lion’s den.”

Chesney licked a blob of peanut butter and grape jelly from her fingers. “They all get tangled up in my head.” She finished off the sandwich and chewed, once more talking around the food. “Can I go play in the backyard?”

“Yes, you may.”

As she watched her daughter scuttle to the sliding glass doors and out into the sunny yard, Liv considered her daughter’s words. Yes, it was good that Chesney understood the individual meaning from each story, but her daughter was missing the bigger picture. Liv skewed her lips to one side. Somehow she had to find a way–not to relay a bunch of unrelated stories–but to tie them all together for her young daughter, so she got a good grasp on the overall message of the good news of God. After all, knowing her mother, Grandma Hope would probably give each of her grandkids a pop quiz at Christmas.

Watch the 45-second book trailer for PIECES ON EARTH.Later that night, after bath time, Liv approached Jeff, who sat at the dining room table reading the newspaper. She’d been especially carefully not to be too exuberant, or her detail-oriented husband would know in a heartbeat that something was up. “Jeff, if you don’t mind, I think I’ll switch things up with Chesney’s bedtime story.”

He looked up at her, a slight furrow between his dark eyebrows. “Was I not doing it right?”

Liv laughed. “You were doing it just fine, but I want to try an approach that will hopefully help her see the big picture of the Bible. You on board with that, sailor?”

A grin popped on her husband’s face at the naval terminology. “Sure. Want me in there with you?”

“Always.” She sent a teasing wink and headed down the hallway to their daughter’s room, her ever-helpful hubby on her heels.

A few seconds later, they all lounged on Chesney’s bed, leaned up against the frame, with their daughter cradled between them. Liv reached for the Bible she’d placed on the nightstand. “Time for a bedtime story.”

Chesney looked up at her like she’d lost her mind. “That’s a big story.”

Jeff laughed out loud. “The biggest story of all time.” He tickled Chesney under her chin until she giggled and ducked away from him.

Liv’s heart immediately fluttered. He’d always been a great dad, in spite of his frequent tours of duty. God, thank You for this new baby for all of us, but especially for Jeff. Liv tried to speak in a normal voice. “And it’s a story we’re a part of.” She smiled down at Chesney.

The statement had the intended effect. “We’re in the story?” Chesney’s eyebrows crinkled in a comical way.

“Yes. But the part I’m going to tell you tonight is about God and the very first man and woman.”

Chesney’s face brightened. “I know this story. Daddy told it to me not too long ago. God made the world and everything that was in it, then put Adam and Even in the garden of Even.”

“You mean the garden of Eden?” Liv over-pronounced the “d” so Chesney would get it right.

“Oh, okay. That place.”

Jeff leaned down near their daughter’s face. “But do you know how God made the world?”

Chesney lifted wiggling fingers high in the air, her face overly dramatic. “Alacajamkazoo. And poof, there it was.”

Liv giggled. “Well, not quite. All God had to do was say what He wanted and it happened. He said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

Their daughter’s eyes were wide with wonder. “That’s amazing. Is that how he created Adam and Eve, too?”

Jeff joined in. “No. The Bible says God stooped down and made Adam by shaping him out of the dirt.”

The expression that landed on Chesney’s face clearly revealed that she found that idea totally preposterous. “Like a mud pie?”

“No, silly.” Liv opened her Bible to Genesis and read the passage directly from the Bible.

“And what about Eve? Did God make her out of dirt, too?”

“When God saw that Adam was lonely, he put Adam to sleep, took out one of his ribs, and created the woman.” Jeff spoke the words reverently, then looked up at Liv with a gleam in his eyes. “Adam was very happy about having a helper.”

Liv’s stomach did a quick somersault. The good news she hid inside threatened to spill out on the spot. She caught a quick breath and captured her daughter’s attention. “But what is really cool is that God made the garden first, and He included everything that Adam and Eve would need to live and be happy. He made it perfect just for them.”

“So they could live happily ever after just like us.” With those words, Chesney wiggled down under the covers and smiled up at her parents. “Good night, Adam and Eve.”

All of them shared a laugh. and after good night kisses, both Liv and Jeff laughed all the way out of the room.

Her eyes a-twinkle, Liv handed the Bible to Jeff as he closed the door behind them. “Here you go, Adam. Put that away for me, will you?”

Then her husband is unexpectedly deployed for an undetermined amount of time, smashing her white Christmas dreams. She’s also shouldering a secret and battling anxiety. Can she find God’s peace in the midst of life’s pieces?

And here are a few Amazon review snippets:

“A beautiful, heartwarming story for Christmas and any time of the year.”

“I think I have found a new favorite Author for 2016, and not just any Author, but a Christian Author!! I was blown away as I read this marvelous story of life, love, and the word of GOD!!”

“Just one more in a long line for Cathy Bryant. I love her stories. You laugh, you cry, you get mad and you love!!! Cathy brings her characters to life.”

“I want everyone to read this book. Being a novella makes it an easy book to work into this busy season. If you like a meaty book, well written, personal, inspirational, and informative, this is it. I want to share with all young mothers as a guide for teaching their young children about the bible. This is a love story with all its challenges, a friendship story with true to life struggles and God’s story. Anxious to see what is next from Cathy Bryant, a very accomplished writer. As always, I was drawn in from page one.”

“Cathy Bryant’s Pieces on Earth is a well-developed story which is certain to touch hearts at Christmas and throughout the year. Sharing the message of the hope found in Jesus without being sappy or preachy is one of Cathy’s very real talents. As the characters develop through the story, I was particularly impressed with the honesty of the emotions portrayed, the clever clarification of the distinction between pieces and peace and the consistent weaving together of modern life and the lessons learned from the biggest story. I highly recommend this lovely novella – it would make a great gift and is also a great way to introduce others to the Peacemaker any time of the year.

SPOTLIGHT: Many Powerful Reasons to See #RISEN – Movie Review

Risen ReviewEver since I first saw the previews for the movie RISEN, I’ve been chomping at the bit for it to come out. When I saw last week that it was to release on February 19, 2016, hubby and I immediately set our date for dinner and a movie.

There are a couple of things that captivated me about this film from the get-go.

First of all, in my humble estimation, there is nothing about our faith more significant than the resurrection. It is truly the reason for our hope as believers.

Secondly, I love that this movie looks at this story from the central hinge of time from the perspective of a non-believer. I pray that as skeptics and doubters watch this movie that they answer that all-important question for themselves: Is Jesus really who He claimed to be?

ABOUT THE MOVIE,  RISEN

RisenRISEN tells the story of a Roman inquiry into the reported resurrection of Jesus Christ, who was called “King of the Jews” and the “Messiah.”

The Pharisees and scribes of the day told the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate, that the followers of Jesus were claiming He would rise again in three days, and so requested to have soldiers guarding His tomb, in case His followers tried to steal the body and claim He had risen.

The order was given and the soldiers were posted, but three days after the crucifixion, the tomb was found to be empty. The Roman senate orders a centurion (Joseph Fiennes) to lead an investigation into the allegations that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead, as asserted by His disciples.

The centurion soon finds himself on a road of self discovery, as well as learning who Jesus was, what exactly was His mission, and why the mighty Roman Empire felt threatened.

Could this one man and his followers truly bring down the Roman Empire? Is it possible His teachings were true, and Rome felt they must be silenced?

My personal favorite of all the videos is this one, because it shows the reaction of people who have seen the movie.

MY REVIEW OF  RISEN
RisenThe disciples and Clavius witness the Ascension of Jesus.

RISEN is all I hoped it would be and more. Anytime a fictional account of a non-fictional story is done, there is always room for too many liberties to be taken. But I didn’t find that to be true in the case with this film.

There were so many things I loved about this movie, I hardly know where to start. First off, I appreciated the fresh perspective this movie gave on first century life for both Jews and the Roman military. It was definitely a time of political unrest. It was also interesting to see the crucifixion of Christ through the eyes of a non-believer.

I found the acting and characterizations of Pilate, Clavius (the main character–a Roman tribune), the disciples, Mary Magdalene, and Jesus to be spot on. Joseph Fiennes gave a stellar performance as Clavius, able to carry off the part of a war-weary Roman centurion and a man touched by the truth of Jesus to perfection. In addition, the cinematography and musical score were both superb.Risen

The scenes representing the dead bodies of those who had been crucified or killed by the Roman army were realistic without being overly graphic. They did a good job of making the viewer imagine the stench involved in such a scenario.

As Clavius launches his investigation in order to hopefully find Jesus’ missing body, it felt very much like a first-century version of CSI, including the questioning of witnesses and studying the evidence at the tomb.

There were many poignant and heart-touching scenes, my favorite being a scene between Jesus and Clavius, where Jesus pinpoints Clavius’ deepest desire to have a day without death. The scenes in which the risen Jesus was reunited with His disciples brought tears to my eyes, and made me long for the day when I, too, will see Him face to face.

RisenClavius helps roll the stone over the entrance to Jesus’ tomb and then secures it with a seal and two guards.

As the movie came to an end, very few people left the theater and a reverent hush blanketed the room. Honestly, even watching the credits roll was a sacred moment for me. The names of the cast and crew revealed that this movie was a multi-cultural and international effort. It took me back to a scene in the movie when Clavius asks the disciple Bartholomew, “Where are the others?” Bartholomew smiles and laughs as he responds, “We’re everywhere!” The credits proved this is still true today. The followers of Jesus literally encircle the globe, His resurrection still providing eternal life to those who believe.

Normally I try to provide at least a few things about the movie or book I’m reviewing which I disliked. But in all truth, there was nothing about this movie to dislike.

The overall message of the movie was this: Once we’ve met our risen Lord and Savior, our lives are forever changed and impacted. We can never again be the same as Jesus’ resurrection life becomes ours. He is forever with us as we continue His work on earth. And the question every human must eventually answer is still the same: “What will you do with the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection?”

RISEN , THE NOVEL BY ANGELA HUNT

I didn’t realize that Christian author Angela Hunt had done a novelization of RISEN prior to the movie’s release until recently. Here is the information about the book:

Risen

Epic in scope, yet deeply personal, this novelization offers a unique perspective on the story of the resurrection. Roman Tribune Clavius is assigned by Pilate to keep the radical followers of the recently executed Yeshua from stealing the body and inciting revolution. When the body goes missing despite his precautions, Clavius must hunt it down.

His investigation leads him from the halls of Herod Antipas to the Garden of Gethsemane and brings him in touch with believer and doubter alike. But as the body still remains missing, Clavius commits to a quest for the truth–and answers that will not only shake his life but echo throughout all of history.

PURCHASE: | Print | Kindle | Audio CD |

Thought I haven’t read the book, I’ve read prior books by Angela Hunt and enjoyed them. I’m sure this one would be good as well.

When the body goes missing despite his precautions, Clavius must hunt it down.

Come to the Garden Allegory

A novel based on true experiences, Come to the Garden is a story about a woman’s journey with a mysterious angel that encourages readers to believe heaven is closer than they think.

Years ago, author Jennifer Wilder Morgan served as a hospital volunteer, visiting critically ill patients—praying with them and listening to their stories. As she created a safe space for those of all faiths and backgrounds, patients began confiding in Morgan about the mysterious ways God speaks to them—including encounters with angels, visions of loved ones who’ve passed on, and messages of comfort spoken in dreams. She witnessed the profound healing that occurs when people are permitted to talk about these experiences, and as a result, Morgan was inspired to share her own personal encounters with God in a novel.

In Come to the Garden, the main character Jenn wakes up on her birthday to find an angel introducing herself as Margaret in the backyard garden. Lately Jenn has been struggling to make sense of the mysterious ways God has been speaking to her and is trying to understand what he wants her to know. The angel takes Jenn back through her memories and life experiences, revealing how God has been connecting with her all along. Under the angel’s guidance, Jenn finally understands the messages God has been speaking to her, in her dreams, divine promptings, and unexplained coincidences. It becomes clear that God is a faithful and persistent pursuer of the human heart.

Framed as a series of conversations between Jenn and her guardian angel, this unconventional and charming narrative will strike deep into the hearts of anyone seeking a greater understanding of God. Come to the Garden is an inspirational fictional story about the surprising ways God works in our lives and affirms that heaven is truly closer than we think.
