Lean Into The Mountain and Bend Your Knees

When I first learned to snow ski, my ski instructor, youngest son, and family friend all gave me the same advice:
"Lean into the mountain and bend your knees."
I must confess that advice seemed illogical to my body, which wanted to bend at the waist and lean down the mountain. Finally I was able to make my body listen to me, and the advice worked like a charm. Before the day was over I was swishing down slopes which at the beginning of the day looked scary and intimidating.
Our walk through life on this planet can often be scary and intimidating as well. Everywhere we look we see something that inspires fear and concern. But you don't have to live your life that way anymore if you'll follow this simple advice: "Lean into the Mountain and bend your knees."
One of the names of God used in the Bible is El Shaddai, which can be translated "mountain." When you lean on God in faith, He takes those scary and uncertain moments and replaces them with His peace.
In like manner, the phrase "bend the knee" is often used to denote prayer. Prayer is nothing more than open and honest conversation with the One who made us and knows us and our situation better than we know it ourselves. He is the One who hears us, who sees us, who gives us wisdom when we ask. Again, He takes the worries and concerns we bring to Him and replaces it with His peace and joy.
My prayer for all of us as we travel through this earthly journey is that we'll remember the advice given to me on a ski slope: "Lean into the Mountain and bend your knees."

The Best Thing You Can Do To Prep

Because of trying times and the signs of those times, we hear more and more about preppers--people who are doing all they can to get prepared for a doomsday scenario--on the internet, on TV, and in our day-to-day interactions with others.
First, let me say that for those of who belong to Jesus, we have nothing to fear. If you've read the Book, you know the outcome: God wins!!!
Secondly, let me say that prepping is not necessarily a bad thing as long as it is done under the direction of God's Holy Spirit. Consider these verses:
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest. ~Proverbs 6:6-8 (NIV)
“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. ~Matthew 24:32-33 (NIV)
I could go through the usual internet list of what to do to prepare (get water, food, shelter, etc.), but far and above everything you can do, first and foremost everyone should make sure they're spiritually ready.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. ~Psalm 20:7 (NIV)
If your trust is in your bank account, your government, your food stash, your weapons, yourself-- ANYTHING besides God as your Savior and Lord!!--you're barking up the wrong tree. All through the Bible we see evidence of Almighty God working miraculous acts on behalf of His people. He doesn't change. He is our refuge!
Getting spiritually ready is for all of us. For those who have professed Him as Lord, we need to make sure that we're living the way He wants us to live, that we're in constant contact with our Creator, seeking Him and His ways.
For those who don't yet belong to Him, I urge you to seek after Him. Read and study His Word. Pray to Him and put your trust in Him. There are further helps for you in the sidebar of this blog. Click on the big blue question mark or HERE to learn more. And please feel free to contact me at catbry1 at yahoo dot com if you have any questions. (A special word of caution needs to be said here: Don't think that we can use God as fire insurance. We must be sincere in seeking Him. He knows our hearts...)
Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. ~Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV)

What Is The Trinity?
by R. C. Sproul
Nonfiction: The Trinity is truly a mystery. This
doctrine teaches that the God of Christianity is one in His essence but
three in His persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Though
the word Trinity is not found in the Bible, there is no doubt that the
Scriptures teach this triune nature of God. Yet the concept still
challenges our finite minds. In this Crucial Questions
booklet, Dr. R.C. Sproul carefully explains the doctrine of the Trinity,
stressing that Christians worship one God who manifests Himself in
three distinct persons. He shows what the Bible teaches and outlines the
chief errors on this doctrine that have afflicted the church. Above
all, he affirms that while this truth is difficult to understand, it is
not contradictory. Rather, it is a beautiful expression of the biblical
teaching on the nature of God.

Beauty - What If?

Picture-perfect images bombard us from television, billboards, and the glossy pages of magazines...beauty as the world defines it.
But what if?
What if true beauty is based on...
~something beneath the skin?
~our scars and what we've endured and overcome?
~how God sees us?
I came across the following video, and it so adequately demonstrated these thoughts I've been having about beauty. I hope you find it as revealing and heart-touching as I did.
Photographer Sees Beyond Disabilities and Redefines Beauty from anberlin_fan on GodTube.

The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling,
a scrubby plant in a parched field.
There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing to cause us to take a second look.
He was looked down on and passed over,
a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand.
One look at him and people turned away.
We looked down on him, thought he was scum.
But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—
our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.
We thought he brought it on himself,
that God was punishing him for his own failures.
But it was our sins that did that to him,
that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins!
He took the punishment, and that made us whole.
Through his bruises we get healed.
We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost.
We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way.
And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong,
on him, on him. ~Isaiah 53:2-6 (MSG)
Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped. ~Revelation 5:6-14 (NIV)
Think about it! Is there anything appealing about a bloody lamb? The answer is "Yes!" when that lamb is the Lamb of God who was slain for our transgressions. When we see Him face to face we will behold His beauty, not as the world describes it, but based on what He has done for us and who He is--the only One worthy of praise and honor and glory and power!
Lord Jesus, how beautiful You are! Thank You for redefining beauty, for showing through Your sacrifice what true beauty is. May we emulate Your example in our pursuit of beauty. Amen.

Satan's Strategy: Divide and Conquer

The Plight of Sheep
Sheep are pretty helpless creatures. In addition, they're not the sharpest crayons in the box. No wonder the Bible so often refers to people as sheep.
We so desperately need the Good Shepherd--our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ--to protect us from the enemy of our souls, Satan. He will and He does! Our part is to stay alert!
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. ~1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)
The Plan of Satan
One of the first rules of warfare is understanding the tactics of the enemy, so in this series of blog posts I hope to remind us of some of the tactics the enemy uses against us, the first of which is his strategy to divide and conquer. A wolf or coyote might follow a herd for days just waiting for the prime opportunity to catch a sheep lagging behind or wandering off.
The devil is no different. If he can separate us from the flock, we become easy prey. If he can catch us napping or taking a break he will attack!
The Plea for Unity
As I look around at our nation and churches today, I see evidence of Satan's activity in this area. Hurt feelings, complacency, and downright rebellion on our part become the perfect breeding ground for the enemy to strike. Even if we're in church every time the doors are open, if our hearts harbor division, the devil will use it to wreak havoc.
Unfortunately this isn't a new problem. King David, Jesus, Paul, and others all give credence to the importance of unity.
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. ~Psalm 133:1-3 (ESV)
"That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me." ~John 17:21 (ESV)
(Did you catch that? We must be united in order for the world to believe!!!!)
I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. ~1 Corinthians 1:10 (ESV)
Another thing we should watch out for. The enemy would like nothing more than to use us to stir up division among our brothers and sisters. He's done it before and will do it again. Extreme caution is advised when entering this territory!!!
But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. ~Titus 3:9-11 (ESV)
THE GOOD NEWS
Jesus came to save us that we might be united into one body with Him as the Head. As long as we abide in Him, seeking after Him and following Him with all our heart, heeding His Word and striving to live our lives in that light, we can and will have victory over the enemy! Stay alert!!!
Thank You, God, for the work Jesus did on the cross to save us from our sins. Thank You for providing the body of Christ so that we're all flocked together under the careful and loving watch of the Good Shepherd. Please help us to remember to be on the alert against the enemy. Help us to recognize his tactics of evil and to overcome them through You and Your Word. Lord, we especially pray for those of the household of faith who have suffered from the attack of the devil and are living in separation from the body. Heavenly Father, please bring them back into the fold. In the powerful and precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Our Personal God

As difficult as it may be to fathom, the Creator of the universe also desires a personal relationship with each of us. He isn't some distant deity who made us and then moved off to let us fend for ourselves. Throughout the Bible, we are given glimpse after glimpse of a covenant God who wants an intimate connection with us and who takes the initiative in seeking us out.
Where Are You?
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” ~Genesis 3:8-9 (NASB)
Walking With Him
Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. ~Genesis 5:24 (NASB)
Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God. ~Genesis 6:9 (NASB)
Our Covenant God
Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless. “I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.” ~Genesis 17:1-2 (NASB)
Our Loving Father...
"I myself said, ‘How gladly would I treat you like my children and give you a pleasant land, the most beautiful inheritance of any nation.’ I thought you would call me ‘Father’ and not turn away from following me." ~Jeremiah 3:19 (NIV)
"Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name...'" ~Matthew 6:9 (NASB)
...With A Mother's Heart
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!" ~Luke 13:34 (NASB)
Who Wants Us to Know Him
Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord. ~Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NASB)
Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” ~Luke 10:39-42 (NASB)
And Calls His Followers His Friends
"No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you." ~John 15:15 (NASB)
THE GOOD NEWS
This God who created us longs for an intimate one-on-one relationship with us. Because He is holy and we are sinful, He went to great lengths to bridge the distance between us by becoming God in the flesh in the person of Jesus. After revealing Himself He went to the cross where He laid down His life for us that we might enjoy a relationship forever and know Him personally.
But he won't force Himself on us. He leaves the choice of a relationship to us, though He grieves when we reject Him (see Luke 13:34 above). Please, if you don't have a personal relationship with Him, open your heart to Him now, for the day is coming when He will separate those He knows from those He doesn't.
Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in Your name and done many mighty works in Your name? And then I will say to them openly (publicly), I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands]. ~Matthew 7:22-23 (AMP)
For those who know Him, He has left this promise of future intimacy.
"I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also." ~John 14:2b-3 (NASB)
Oh, Father God, thank You for Your mother's heart that longs to spread Your wings over us and draw us near to You. I pray that You'll drown out the world's appeal and distraction so we might see and hear You and You alone. Help us to realize that life boils down to one thing: an intimate one-on-one relationship with You. May we be quick to choose that friendship over friendship with the world. May we live our lives in such a way that we will one day hear You say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant..." Thank You for making a way for us to be in relationship to You through Jesus and His work on the cross on our behalf. Amen.

No God, No Peace ~ Know God, Know Peace
If ever a society needed peace, surely it is ours. We work longer hours than ever before, sure that our life is dependent upon our jobs and the resulting paychecks. In spite of our wealth and pursuit of stuff to make us happy, we are a people rife with depression, lack of sleep, and unhappiness.
The solution is both simple and complex. As with all problems, the answer is God. Unfortunately, our propensity towards sin, selfishness, skepticism, and stubbornness get in the way, making our solution more difficult to achieve.
Throughout God's Word peace and rest are freely offered. And in sharp contrast, those who refuse His peace and rest are doomed to unrest. Consider the following verses:
You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You. ~Isaiah 26:3 (AMP)
Peace, peace, to him who is far off [both Jew and Gentile] and to him who is near! says the Lord; I create the fruit of his lips, and I will heal him [make his lips blossom anew with speech in thankful praise]. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked. ~Isaiah 57:19-21 (AMP)
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. ~Matthew 11:28-29 (AMP)
In Hebrews 13 and 14 we have a treasure trove of information on the rest of God compared to those who refuse to accept it or pursue it. In truth, not only is the quality of our current lives affected by either God's rest or the lack of it, but it will continue to impact us after this earthly life has passed.
And to whom did He swear that they should not enter His rest, but to those who disobeyed [who had not listened to His word and who refused to be compliant or be persuaded]? So we see that they were not able to enter [into His rest], because of their unwillingness to adhere to and trust in and rely on God [unbelief had shut them out]. ~Hebrews 3:18-19 (AMP)
Oh, Father God, as the days of our lives pass like granules of sand in an hourglass, may we be reminded of the brevity of life and the importance of seeking You as our ultimate rest and peace. Without You, there is no rest. Without You, there is no peace. Guide us to not only seek Your peace for our own lives, but to hold out the good news of salvation and rest in Jesus Christ to a restless and hurting world. Amen.
