Empty

(NOTE: Scroll through to the bottom to view the best "empty" of all time.)

It amazes me how the first few pictures of empty leave me feeling sad, anxious and even depressed, but the empty cross and the empty tomb fill me with joy and hope!

May you be filled with the joy and hope of Easter!

Eradicate

by David Fiorazo

Non-fiction: Understanding, Combatting, and Overcoming the
Anti-Christian Agenda, Apathy in the Church, and the Decline of Morality
in Culture

‘Eradicate' identifies two major problems
causing the spiritual and moral decline in our country: the secular
agenda to blot out God, and the apathy of Christians. This book will
expose the anti-Christian movements in America and give you a thorough
understanding of the foundational battle for truth. With 78% of
Americans claiming to be Christians, how did it get to the point where
Christianity is having less of an influence on our culture than culture
is having on Christianity? Too many believers have conformed to our
culture and we’re now suffering the consequences as a nation. The Bible contains much prophecy concerning end times,
warning us to not be ignorant so we can be bold and fight the good
fight of faith. As Christians, we’ll predictably face more hostility and
possibly increased persecution in America as we draw closer to Jesus
Christ’s return. It is now more pivotal than ever that we prepare
ourselves, know the truth of Scripture, and understand the direction our
country has taken. Enemy forces continue to destroy this nation
by attacking America's Judeo-Christian roots from within. This book
will investigate government, media, Hollywood, public schools, our
culture of death, and the push toward socialism and Marxism. You’ll see
how some churches and leaders are diluting the Word of God weakening the
witness of believers. You may be outraged as this book exposes how sin
is being openly promoted, yet encouraged because God is still in
control. There’s a remnant of committed Christians resisting evil and
standing in the way. The choice is ours: who or what will we give our
allegiance to, God or man; to Jesus Christ or to culture and politics?
As Christians, our loyalties must not be divided any longer or America
may be lost.

A Favorite Son

by Uvi Poznaznsky

Biblical Fiction: This story is a present-day twist on the biblical story of Jacob and his
mother Rebecca plotting together against the elderly father Isaac, who
is lying on his deathbed, in order to get their hands on the
inheritance, and on the power in the family. This is no old fairy tale.
Its power is here and now, in each one of us. Listening to
Yankle telling his take on events, we understand the bitter rivalry
between him and his brother. We become intimately engaged with every
detail of the plot, and every shade of emotion in these flawed, yet
fascinating characters. He yearns to become his father's favorite son,
seeing only one way open to him, to get that which he wants: deceit. "What
if my father would touch me," asks Yankle. In planning his deception,
it is not love for his father, nor respect for his age that drives his
hesitation--rather, it is the fear to be found out. And so--covering his
arm with the hide of a kid, pretending to be that which he is not--he
is now ready for the last moment he is going to have with his father.

Choose. Love.

by Rosalyn Martin

Non-fiction: Choose. Love. is an honest depiction of my trials, tribulations, and
indiscretions as I walked away from everything that I had been taught in
order to find love. It is my candid portrayal of my “lost years” as I
sought to attain the sort of romantic connection that I thought I
needed. It is a narrative about heartbreak and loss—painful, personally
earth shattering, and unavoidable. It is about my discovery that all the
love I require cannot be found in another person.

Why You Really Can Memorize Scripture

by Dr. Daniel Morris

Non-fiction: Called to be a missionary as a teenager, I had a great desire to
fulfill God's will, but had a great sense of inadequacy for such an
extraordinary purpose. But God says he who meditates in His Word
...shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth
forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and
whatsoever he doeth shall prosper
(Psalm 1:3). This verse was and still is a great source of encouragement.

Part of meditation is to memorize God's Word,
so I began a systematic method of memorizing consecutive passages of
scripture. Through the years I learned, both by study and by
experience, how God made our memory function. Presently, I have 42
chapters memorized and, best of all, our missionary work has prospered
beyond what I could have imagined. This book describes what I learned
about permanently memorizing scripture and will help you be one of the
few who experiences the blessing of meditation in God's Word, and the
hope that whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. In this book you’ll learn:

Specific memorization techniques.
How to memorize scripture, the Bible.
How to remember what you read.

don’t have to have it all together, or have the perfectly balanced

now I realize that isn’t so. God will bless your efforts, and He will

action from you to improve or be better at being a Christian, know this,
God is strong where ever you are weak, and your actions for the Lord
will not go in vain. Desires
of My Heart is a devotional eBook based on Psalm 37:4. So many of us
believers walk our Christian walk without really knowing what it means
to delight in the Lord. In this eBook we answer that question "What
does it mean to delight in the Lord?" "Desires of My Heart" is a
powerful eBook that will help you work to get past any barriers you may
have that is inhibiting your walk with the Lord, while also encouraging

PILGRIMAGE OF PROMISE Launch Party Plans

PLEASE STEAL THIS PICTURE AND PLASTER IT EVERYWHERE YOU CAN!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Pilgrimage of Promise is officially out in public, so it's time to celebrate! I can tell you this: by the time an author conceives a book idea and characters, writes the lousy first draft, sits through mind-numbing rounds of edits, finalizes the book cover, and formats the book for print and various ebook versions, she's more than ready for some F.U.N.!

So to satisfy my craving for some fun, the online book launch party for Pilgrimage of Promise is slated for Monday, April 15, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. (CST) here at WordVessel. (Those of you who've been to a Miller's Creek book launch party know that this is only home base. We'll be surfing through cyberspace for all sorts of fun and games. No time to get bored!!!)

As usual, I'll also be giving away prizes throughout the evening--including a Kindle!

Please invite all your friends! Okay, well at least those who enjoy reading Christian fiction. (Hopefully you noticed my plea under the invitation picture.) If nothing else, share the party details in a status update on Facebook or tweet about it. The more, the merrier!!!

Looking forward to the big night, and I hope to see you there!

Be Blessed,

7 Marks of a Godly Leader - Samuel

At a quick glance, Samuel may not seem like much of a leader. After all, his own sons rejected his way of following God (1 Samuel 8:3) and the people of Israel soon followed suit by asking for a king to govern them (1 Samuel 8:4). After years of dedication to serving God and His people, this rejection must surely have stung.

But let's take a closer look at Samuel's life to see exactly how he exhibited the marks of a godly leader.

He was called by God .

Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” ~1 Samuel 3:4 (NIV)

Samuel didn't take on his role via his own initiative. Instead he responded to God's call. True leaders are divinely called to their role.

He listened to God .

The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” ~1 Samuel 3:10 (NIV)

Even as a young boy dwelling in the temple of God under the tutelage of Eli the priest, Samuel listened to God. It's important to remember that in the original language of the Old Testament, the word "listening" was more than just hearing. It actually means "to hear with a view to obey." Though the Lord gave Samuel the difficult task of relaying an unpopular message to Eli, Samuel followed through in complete obedience.

The Lord was with him .

The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and He let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there He revealed Himself to Samuel through His word. ~1 Samuel 3:19-21 (NIV)

God is with those that He calls. He enables His chosen ones to do things they would not be able to do on their own. In Samuel's case, none of the words that He spoke fell to the ground, because the people recognized him as the Lord's prophet and because God revealed Himself to Samuel through His word.

He lead the people back to God .

So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the Lord and serve Him only, and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only. ~1 Samuel 7:3-4(NIV)

Any leader that leads a nation away from God is not a godly leader. Samuel didn't mince words, but told the people exactly what they needed to do to return to God and assure victory for the nation. This included putting away foreign gods, committing themselves to the Lord, and serving Him only.

He interceded for the people .

Then Samuel said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah, and I will intercede with the Lord for you.” ~1 Samuel 7:5 (NIV)

As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. ~1 Samuel 12:23a (NIV)

A good leader intercedes for the people he serves. Samuel even considered it a sin against God to not intercede for the people. Of course, as followers of Christ, He is our leader. And guess what He does for us?

Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. ~Romans 8:34 (NIV)

Imagine that! Jesus--who is God--intercedes on our behalf! If that doesn't bring benediction to your heart and life then nothing will.

He warned the people .

"Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.” Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. ~1 Samuel 8:9-10 (NIV)

"If you fear the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors." ~1 Samuel 12:14-15 (NIV)

"But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” ~1 Samuel 13:14 (NIV)

Whether talking to the Israelites or their new king Saul, Samuel didn't hesitate to issue warnings and rebukes. As a prophet of the Lord, he spoke the message given to him, no matter how unpopular. He refused to tell them what they wanted to hear, but instead told them what they needed to hear.

He wasn't in it for personal gain .

Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.” “You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.” ~1 Samuel 12:3-4 (NIV)

I believe most leaders today, at least politically-speaking, are in it for personal gain, whether in the form of monetary remuneration or prestige, power, and fame. Notice that Samuel had not cheated, oppressed the people, or taken bribes. Even the people realized his honesty. Now don't get me wrong here. The Bible clearly teaches that those who work for Him are worthy of their hire (1 Timothy 5:18; Luke 10:7), but not to the point of forcefully taking the belongings of other, oppressing those they serve, cheating, or accepting bribes to turn a blind eye to wrongdoing.

Application

Godly leaders:

Are called by God.
Listen to and obey God.
Are accompanied by God's presence with them.
Lead the people back to God instead of away from Him.
Intercede for the people.
Speak words of warning and tell the people what they need to hear.
Aren't in it for personal gain.

God, give us godly leaders, called by and obedient to You. Reveal to our current leaders that their position is allowed by You. Help them to remember You and follow You. Reveal Your power to them, so that they know You. May our leaders lead us to You instead of away from You, and remove them from power if they don't. Give us leaders who speak Your truth instead of deceiving words meant to placate and flatter. Help our leaders to serve You rather than themselves. And most importantly, Lord, help us all to remember that in our personal roles of leadership to strive to emulate the marks of godly leaders. Amen.

The Glimpse

by Grant Carroll

Fiction: Austin Kelly is about to learn a lesson: Be careful when you pray for God to change you, because He answers prayer. Even though he's a Sunday School teacher, Austin's faith in Jesus Christ is no match for his fear of rejection from others. Lizzie Kelly has more courage than her husband, but struggles to find fulfillment and meaning in her job at their church. The couple's friends aren't faring much better. Computer tech Daniel Cabrera fights disappointment with the direction his career has taken, and even more frustration

with the church youth he teaches. His wife, Jackie, strives to maintain a sense of control over her life, but it's quickly faltering. Faced with churches dying across New York City, the four Christian teachers have a cry in their hearts for their lives to make a difference. God answers their cry by throwing them into a world that looks like a nightmare version of the United States. Everything is so similar, yet totally different, starting with the fact that Christians are nearly extinct after decades of persecution. They soon discover it is a fascist nation, where anyone who professes faith in Christ risks their life. The four travelers encounter a group of teenagers that turn out to be one of the last surviving churches, led by their high school teacher, Eric Peterson. With no visible way to get home, Austin, Lizzie and their friends join the underground church in their fight to spread the Gospel while avoiding the National Police. Their task is made even more difficult when revival breaks out in the local high school and draws unwanted attention, but they know they can't stop until their work is complete and the Lord makes a way for them to go home...if there is one..

5 Steps to Overcome Worry

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." ~Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV)

Though I don't like to admit the truth of this statement, it is nonetheless true: Faith and worry can't live together. When one moves in, the other moves out.

We either trust or we worry. We can't do both simultaneously.

As a lifelong worry-wart, I often have to remind myself of the words of Jesus found in Matthew 6.  If I keep these truths buried in my heart, I can defeat the worry habit. Hopefully the following five steps will help us all break the chains of worry.

Worry Doesn't Accomplish Anything

If worry brought about change, my life would be perfect. Unfortunately, worry doesn't accomplish anything. In fact, it only makes things worse by wasting our spiritual reserves and keeping our thoughts and actions from going after more worthwhile pursuits. I don't know who said it, but the following quote goes right along with this point: "Worry does not relieve tomorrow of its stress; it merely empties today of its strength."

Trust God

When will I truly learn the trustworthiness of God? Oh, I say I trust Him, but my thoughts and actions often betray me by revealing my true level of trust. He has proven Himself faithful. Unfortunately, the enemy still plants seeds of doubt and fear in my brain. I'm convinced that one of the best ways to overcome those minutes of worry is to rehearse the goodness of God and simply turn my worries over to Him in complete trust. There's not a need that we have that He doesn't already know (Matthew 6:8), and He will provide.

Put God First

When I give in to thoughts of worry, I am in effect giving those things I'm worried about a higher priority than God. In my humble opinion, that's why Jesus included verse 33 in His words about worry. We need to avoid divided loyalties at all cost. We should give Him first place in our lives and allow Him access to every part of us. He has promised to meet our needs. (See Philippians 4:19.)

Live in the Present

The past is over and done with, and we have no control over the future. Most of what we worry about has either already happened or something we fear might happen tomorrow. Today is a gift from God. All the time I spend worrying ignores the beautiful moments God has given me right now in this moment.

Turn Your Cares Into Prayers

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus ~Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Prayer is key to overcoming worry. When we take our worries to the Lord, we are putting things in the right order and trusting that God will take care of it. He'll either remove the item of concern or give us the strength we need to deal with it. And the final result will be hearts and minds guarded by His unfathomable peace.

Father, thank You for Your provision and care. Forgive us for those times that we allow worry to sneak in the back door. When the enemy tempts us to worry, help us to recognize it quickly and turn to You in prayer. Grant us the ability to live in the present instead of harboring thoughts of yesterday and tomorrow. Remind us that worry can't change a thing. Most importantly, may each of us allow You Your rightful place in our lives. Amen.

Why Trust Jesus?

by Dave Sterrett

Non-fiction: The
last decade has shaken our trust in personal safety through terrorist
attacks, school shootings, economic turmoil, and war. Our trust has been
shattered in other areas as we have seen hypocrisy in governmental
leaders as well as in the church. We are looking for
relationships that are authentic and full of life, but we have many
questions in regard to faith, reason, suffering and even the person of
Jesus himself. Author and speaker Dave Sterrett helps us answer these
and other questions:

-Why Should I Trust Jesus when So Many Other Spiritual Paths Exist?
The
foundation of trusting in Jesus is that he is true. But if absolute
truth does not exist, then to say that "Jesus is the Truth" is a
meaningless statement. Many definitions of truth fail, but a good
definition of truth is "that which corresponds to reality"; simply put,
truth is "telling it like it is."

-Why Should I Trust Jesus When All I Need to do is Trust Myself?
Human
knowledge is real, but it has its limitations. Jesus, however, is
all-knowing. He knows everything about me. He knows everything about
you. He knows what you are thinking. He knows what you are feeling. He
understands you better than you understand yourself! This is one of the
many good reasons for us to pray to the Father in the name of the Son.

-Why Should I Trust Jesus in the Midst of Suffering and Death?
The
ultimate foundation of Christianity is a historical event: the bodily
resurrection of Jesus Christ. A man who walked this earth in history
claimed to be God, died on the cross, and bodily rose from the dead.

Many
people in today's culture, both Christians and non-Christians, have
questions about why and how to trust Jesus. But there is hope! He is
worthy of our trust.
